Brian Nearing in the Albany Times-Union reports that while unemployment rates in Greene and Columbia county stayed flat in July 2014, the jobless rate fell in five Capitol region counties. Albany (5.1 percent), Rensseler (5.4), Saratoga (4.5), Schenectady (5.4) and Schoharie (6.5) all had drops in unemployment in the last month, while Greene and Columbia counties remained at 6.1 and 4.8 percent, respectively. Dutchess County had a 5.3 percent level, and Ulster County came in at 6.1 percent unemployed. Columbia County had the fifth lowest level in New York. Statewide, the unemployment rate was also unchanged at 6.6 percent in July, remaining at its lowest level since November 2008. The private sector has added jobs in 38 of the past 43 months, according to the state Labor Department. Read the full story in the Albany Times-Union.

Parry Teasdale in The Columbia Paper writes an editorial about the weekly's coming website updates. "The idea is to expand online before Google, Facebook and Amazon merge into a single company that feeds us, walks our virtual dogs and fills out our election ballots," Teasdale writes, without any details of what those changes may entail. Currently, "over the last 30 days Google tells us that our website had 6,466 'unique visitors' and 25,367 pageviews, not including our Facebook traffic," he writes, noting that may be a quarter of Columbia County households. [caption width="640" align="alignleft"] Peter Krug and Jill Sutton hosting the "WGXC Afternoon Show" through the new WGXC Satellite Studio.[/caption]After WGXC’s Satellite Mini-Pledge Drive two weeks ago raised almost $1000, WGXC acquired a new rack-mount remote unit, with a small table attached, which will allow for remote broadcasts throughout the Hudson Valley. The unit was hooked up at the Catskill Community Center this week, where Peter Krug and Jill Sutton hosted the "WGXC Afternoon Show" Aug. 12. On Sept. 1, the station will wheel it over to its new home at the Catskill Library. There, it will host several shows on the community radio station, but also, sometimes, it will be wheeled away for remote broadcasts.

The Daily Freeman reports that WMHT-TV will air the broadcast premiere of the independent film, “To Be Forever Wild,” made in the Hudson Valley, at 7:30 p.m. on August 20. The film chronicles people the filmmakers met, the places they visited and the history discovered in the Catskill Mountains, with filmmakers staying in a small red cabin once used by Jack London and now loaned to artists by the Catskill Center. Jim Planck is reporting in The Daily Mail the Catskill Waterfront Resilience Task Force is seeking feedback on its plans to reduce flood risk in and around the village of Catskill. The task force will present its recommendations for immediate action to reduce risks from floods, plus a long-term resiliency plan to the public next week. Village President Vincent Seeley said the plan includes zoning recommendations for the waterfront, bank stabilization advice and the creation of a handbook containing information on steps to take in the event of a flood. Seeley urged all interested parties to attend, stressing the importance of getting feedback from the community. The task force report will eventually be made available online, and at the Catskill Library, as well. The task force presentation is scheduled to take place 7 p.m., Tues., Aug. 19 at the Washington Irving Senior Center located on Academy St. in Catskill. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

The Daily Freeman is reporting the legislation to name a portion of state Route 23 for retired clerk of the Greene County Legislature Donald Olson has been signed into law by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo. The roadway will be called the "Honorable Donald Olson Memorial Highway." The legislation was introduced state Sen. Cecilia Tkaczyk (KAT-chik). Olson died in a car accident in Windham in May 2013. He was a longtime Prattsville town justice and a volunteer firefighter with the Prattsville Hose Company for more than 25 years. The new law takes effect immediately. Joseph Spector is reporting in the Poughkeepsie Journal the state's second largest public-employee union Thurs., Aug. 14, backed Zephyr Teachout over incumbent Andrew M. Cuomo in the Sept. 9 Democratic primary. The Public Employees Federation, with 55,000 members, supported Cuomo during his first election bid in 2010. The endorsement came the same day that another union, the New York State United Teachers, declined to endorse a candidate in the governor's race. A NYSUT spokesman said the union could not come to a consensus among the candidates. NYSUT has battled Cuomo over teacher evaluations and tougher testing standards. NYSUT, which has 600,000 members, has endorsed Chris Gibson for Congress, Cecilia Tkaczyk for state Senate and Didi Barrett and Phil Malone for Assembly. The union did not endorse a candidate in the race between incumbent state Sen. Kathleen Marchione, a Republican, and Democrat Brian Howard, a former school administrator. The Civil Service Employees Association, the state's largest public union, has indicated it will not back Cuomo this year. Read the full story in the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Joe Gentile is reporting in The Daily Mail the Columbia County Board of Supervisors Wed., Aug. 13, approved the Columbia-Greene Community College 2014-15 budget. The $17.6 million spending plan would increases tuition by three percent. The plan requires increased contributions for both Columbia and Greene counties, as well. The members of the Greene County Legislature's County Resources Committee voted Aug. 6 in support of the proposal. A public hearing on the spending plan is scheduled for Aug. 20, before the appropriation is brought to a final vote by the full Legislature. Under the budget part-time tuition rates are projected to increase $5, to $170 per credit hour. Full-time students could see their tuition bills raised by $60 per semester. William J. Kemble is reporting in the Daily Freeman U.S. Department of Energy officials have declared the proposed 336-mile Champlain Hudson Power Express project ready for a Presidential permit. The permit would allow a 1,000-megawatt electric transmission line to be laid in and alongside the Hudson River. The announcement was made Mon., Aug. 11, by Transmission Developers Inc. The group last year received state Public Service Commission approval for its application to deliver electricity from Canada to the New York City area. Under the plan, lines will run in the Lake Champlain bed, then go over land for just under 170 miles before being put in the Hudson River just south of the village of Catskill. The project received endorsements two years ago from Scenic Hudson and Riverkeeper. Both environmental advocacy organizations noted the line will be buried along railroad and highway rights of way for approximately a third of the Hudson River section. The groups were also convinced to support the project after Champlain Hudson Power Express promised to establish a mitigation fund of nearly $118 million that would be paid over a 35-year period. Brian Nearing is reporting in the Times Union Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan has sharply rebuked the state Department of Environmental Conservation over its review of a planned oil terminal expansion at the Port of Albany. In a letter to the DEC last month, Sheehan claimed the state agency has illegally approved a surge in oil shipments piecemeal, rather than taking an overall perspective. The mayor accused DEC of something called segmentation, which is a review of a project's environmental impact in isolated segments, rather than as a unified whole. Segmentation is illegal under the state Environmental Quality Review Act. Sheehan maintains DEC segmented its review of plans by Massachusetts-based Global Partners to add a crude-oil heating facility to its terminal in Albany. The company applied to DEC for the heating project last year, and nearby residents have since grown increasingly vocal over safety concerns. When contacted by the Times Union, a Sheehan spokeswoman said the letter spoke for itself and the mayor had no further comment. The DEC press office did not respond to requests for comment. Agnes Moorehead played a selfish, neurotic woman who overhears a murder being plotted via crossed phone wires and eventually realizes she is the intended victim. She recreated the performance six times for the CBS radio show "Suspense" and several times on other radio shows, always using her original, dog-eared script. In 1952, she recorded an album of the drama, and performed scenes from the story in her one-woman show in the 1950s. Barbara Stanwyck played the role in the 1948 film version.

Max Oppen is reporting in the Daily Mail nearly three years since Tropical Storm Irene roared through upstate New York, the Greene County Highway Department has completed all projects stemming from the storm. The highway department has spent more than $17 million for repairs. The county has received more than$ $14 million in reimbursement for the work, with more funds on the way. In other highway department news, roadwork is slated to start on Cairo's Main Street, from the traffic light to the Shingle Kill Bridge, to Hannaford, across Route 32 and up to the intersection of Main Street and Route 23. Patricia Doxsey is reporting in the Daily Freeman Democratic elected officials, candidates and supporters gathered Tues., Aug. 13 to promote the Women’s Equality Party and the creation of a Women’s Equality line on the November ballot. Kathy Hochul (HOH-kuhl), the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor.was at BSP on Wall Street in uptown Kingston with incumbent Democratic senators and assembly members from throughout the region. Sen. Cecilia Tkaczyk (KAT-chik) said, “We can send a very strong message when people vote on the Women’s Equality Party line." In addition to stumping for the creation of the new party, Hochul and others blasted the state Senate for declining to take up the Women’s Equality Act. She said the inaction was nothing short of an assault on women’s rights. Tkaczyk said one way to ensure the Women’s Equality Act is voted on is to elect more women to the state Senate. Arthur Cusano is reporting in the Register Star the weeklong search for a Chatham man is continuing, according to New York State Police. Benjamin Kaufmann, 33, left his residence the afternoon of Wed., Aug. 6, for a walk and did not return, state police said. State police, members of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department and state forest rangers have been conducting an extensive search of the area off of State 203 in the town of Chatham. Kaufmann is described as a white male with brown hair and brown eyes. He is 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs about 210 pounds. He was last seen wearing dark-colored shorts and no shirt. Kaufmann was last seen by his family as he walked down the road near the family home. Anyone with information that could aid in locating Kaufmann should call the New York State Police at 851-3111. Little Big Chief has been around for about three years now – putting out a mix of reissues and new material from artists that steer towards the really primitive or, maybe, avant garage end of the rock spectrum. More recent reissues, however, like Simon Finn’s acid-folk classic Pass the Distance and Pete and Royce’s prog-rock epic Suffering of Tomorrow have made the Little Big Chief catalog a bit more varied and difficult to pin down. John Mason is reporting in the Register Star the city of Hudson may have another chance at state funding to clean up the contaminated former site of Foster's Refrigeration on the city's north side. Mayor William H. Hallenbeck Jr. told the Hudson Industrial Development Agency Mon., Aug. 11, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has named the polluted parcel located at 119 N. Second St. a state brownfield site, and it may qualify for remediation aid. A brownfield site is land previously used for industrial purposes, which may be contaminated by low concentrations of hazardous waste or pollution, and has the potential to be reused once it is cleaned up. The cleanup of the Foster's site was ready to be done in 2007, with funds available, but was halted by the effects of the recession on the state economy. The site contains approximately 2,600 cubic yards of lead-contaminated subsurface soil and 100 cubic yards of PCB-contaminated soil. Commercial refrigerators were manufactured there from 1946 to 1994. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Arthur Cusano is reporting in the Register Star Hudson City Board of Education President Kelly Frank will resign from the board, effective Aug. 25. She will relocate to Houston in September to become a financial reporter for a CBS affiliate there. Frank was elected to the board in 2011 and elected president following Peter Merante's resignation in April 2013. Frank is native of Corning. Her son is a 2011 graduate of Hudson High School; she has a daughter currently enrolled in the district. At the present time Hudson native Tiffany Martin Hamilton is serving as board vice president. Matthew Hamilton is reporting at Capitol Confidential a state Supreme Court judge in Brooklyn ruled Mon., Aug. 11, that gubernatorial candidate Zephyr Teachout can remain on the primary ballot. The decision was a rejection of a Cuomo campaign challenge to knock her off for not being a resident of the state for at least five years. Teachout grew up in Vermont and landed in New York in 2009 as a Fordham faculty member. She still teaches law at the college. Teachout joins comedian Randy Credico on the ballot as the Cuomo challengers in the Democratic primary, Sept. 9. In a statement released Monday, Teachout projected confidence following the court decision, and challenged Cuomo to a debate about "the issues that real New Yorkers care about: Schools, fracking, corruption and building a fair and strong economy.”
