Christy Collins of Chatham announced Aug. 1 that CoCotodo, the eight-year-old Columbia County events website, will shut down at the end of 2014. "CoCotodo would be nothing without the ongoing contributions of the community and I am grateful to everyone that participated in it’s existence," Collins wrote in a statement on the site. "It has been extremely gratifying to build something that is useful to people and I have learned a lot from the experience." Collins says she will consider selling the site.

The State Board of Elections reminds New York residents that to vote in the Sept. 9 primary elections for state and local offices, one must mail-in voter registration forms postmarked by midnight, August 15 and received by a board of elections no later than August 20. The voter registration form can be downloaded from the BOE's website: www.elections.ny.gov. If you have an established account at the Department of Motor Vehicles you may register online at the MyDMV site. You can also register or find forms at most state and federal government offices. Residents who have moved to a new county within the state must re-register from their new address. Those who are currently registered and have moved to a new address in the same county should notify their county board of elections in writing of their move no later than August 20. Anyone unsure whether they are registered, or wish to verify their current address, may look-up their status at the BOE website: www.elections.ny.gov. One can register in-person at the county boards of elections offices in Hudson and Catskill, but must do so no later than August 15 to be eligible to vote in the September primary. Windham-based WRIP (97.9-FM) celebrated its 15th anniversary this week, as it broadcast on the air the first time Aug. 5, 1999. The station posted a recording of its first broadcast with WRIP's first General Manager and Morning Host, Windham native Guy Patrick Garraghan. (The recording comes from Gavin Burt, a founding correspondent of Northeast Radio Watch.) WRIP broadcasts live from the Prattsville Mudfest Aug. 23.

After WGXC's Satellite Mini-Pledge Drive last week raised $680, WGXC acquired a new rack-mount remote unit, with a small table attached, which will allow for remote broadcasts throughout the Hudson Valley. The unit will move into the Catskill Community Center this week, where the studio equipment currently there will moved onto the rack. On Sept. 1, the station will wheel it over to its new home the Catskill Library. There, it will host several shows on the community radio station, but also, sometimes, it will be wheeled away for remote broadcasts.

The WGXC Fundraising Advisory Committee meets at 6 p.m., Aug. 12, at the WGXC Hudson studio, 704 Columbia St., floor 2. This group provides leadership with respect to fundraising events and major donor gifts for WGXC 90.7-FM. The advisory committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month, at 6 p.m. Those seeking to take an active role in WGXC's fundraising efforts are welcome to join the advisory committee, and should contact Station Manager Lynn Sloneker (lynn@wgxc.org) to learn more.

Kemble is reporting in the Daily Freeman the Greene County Industrial Development Agency wants to work with Peckham Materials to find uses for the former Holcim Cement property on Route 9W in Catskill. Agency Executive Director Rene VanSchaack said this week the site could be used to produce alternative forms of energy. VanSchaack specifically mentioned the use of biomass, made of plant-based materials. The amount of property available at the Holcim site could make it suitable for both Peckham Materials and an energy-generating plant, VanSchaack said. Peckham has purchased the quarry and frontage and the rights out to the Hudson River. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.

Matthew Hamilton is reporting at Capitol Confidential Rep. Chris Gibson and Democratic challenger Sean Eldridge are halfway to their first debate. Eldridge announced Thurs., Aug. 7, that he accepted the invitation to participate in a debate on WMHT in October. Stephanie Valle, Gibson’s chief of staff, said a formal decision from the Republican’s side will come in the future. “Voters in New York's 19th district deserve to hear directly from both of us about where we stand on the critical issues facing our communities and our country,” Eldridge said. Valle said Gibson has accepted invitations to debate on WMHT before and that his camp would like to speak with the Eldridge campaign to make sure there is a balance of debates throughout the large 19th Congressional District. Julia Reischel in The Watershed Post reports that the Route 23 bridge above the CSX railroad line between Route 9W and Route 385 in Catskill, will have one lane only on Aug. 8 and the following week. The New York State Department of Transportation has been resurfacing Route 23 all summer in Greene County, and this paving is one of the final parts of that project. The DOT says Route 23 will be reduced to a single alternating lane of traffic controlled by flaggers between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Aug. 8, and resumes the following week starting Monday, with a similar pattern of traffic controlled by flaggers from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Read the full story in The Watershed Post.

Patricia Morrow, on WRIP's Facebook page, reports that Windham Mountain Bike World Cup will shut down traffic on Route 23, the town's Main St., Friday night for a block party from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. The road will be detoured from 6 p.m. until midnight with access from the West at the intersection of State Route 23 and South Street, commercial vehicles and larger vehicles will be directed onto South Street, to State Route 296 and back onto Route 23 East. State Route 23 will be open for local traffic to Church Street, where it is closed. There will be limited local traffic on Church Street. Access from the East for commercial vehicles and larger vehicles will be routed onto State Route 296, then onto South Street to State Route 23 Westbound. Local traffic will have access to Mitchell Hollow Road and there will be limited local access on Mill Street. Parts of the races will be broadcast on the Universal Sports Network 8-10 p.m. this weekend.

Damian Catera is an interdisciplinary sound and media artist, electroacoustic composer and improviser. Catera's work reflects interests in critical analysis, experimental composition/ improvisation and transmission. He has toured and exhibited his work the US, Europe and Asia. His primary mission as an artist is to blur disciplinary boundaries often utilizing appropriated material and algorithmic processing. In recent years, Catera has performed solo improvised “decompositions” using computer manipulated live radios as instrumentation in such venues as the New Museum of Contemporary Art and The Kitchen in New York City , the ZKM institute in Germany and the Institute for Contemporary Art in Prague. As a collaborator, Damian has performed at the National Gallery in Prague, The Walker Center and The Adler Planetarium. Catera has exhibited sound installations and video pieces in a variety of forums including The Chelsea Museum, Art in General, ICMC ’96 in Hong Kong and MediaForum 2003 in Moscow. Damian holds and MFA in Electronic Arts from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a BA in Political Science from Siena College. He also studied Electroacoustic Composition at Les Atelier UPIC, the Paris-based institute founded by composer Iannis Xenakis. He is represented by the Hogar Collection Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, and is the recipient of a 2008 Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Joe Gentile is reporting in The Daily Mail Greene County legislators discussed preventing access to portions of Kaaterskill Falls at a meeting of the Public Safety Committee, Wed., Aug. 6. The conversation was prompted following two deaths in four weeks at the Hunter tourist attraction. The committee is drafting a letter to state Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joseph Martens, the Hunter Town Board, state Assemblyman Pete Lopez and state Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk (KAT-chik) about their safety concerns. In addition to impeding trail access, the committee discussed long-term solutions, such as fences, short-term emergency financial aid for training and equipment, and upgrading emergency communications on a nearby DEC ranger tower. Adam Clayton is reporting in the Register Star Philmont Beautification Inc. has been displaced from its building on Main St. in Philmont due to a building code violation. The group is a nonprofit, grassroots community development organization co-founded by town resident Sally Baker. A notice was posted on the former convenience store July 1 by the town's building inspector, but the exact nature of the violation is unclear. The property in question is a 2,100-square-foot building located on more than an acre of land. Until the violation is corrected the group cannot use the space, Baker said, and current projects are at a standstill. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Kemble is reporting in the Daily Freeman the Greene County Industrial Development Agency is looking at properties near Thruway Exit 21 that would be suitable for attracting businesses. Agency Executive Director Rene VanSchaack said there are no specific parameters for the size of desired parcels but he would like to find enough land to interest hotel developers and corporations that would bring tourist attractions to the town. VanSchaack said the agency will seek to conclude environmental reviews and zoning approvals before new projects are found for any properties. Audrey Matott is reporting in The Daily Mail the Cairo-Durham Board of Education Tues., Aug. 5, appointed Cairo-Durham High School principal Anthony Taibi (TIE-ee-bee) to serve as the district's acting superintendent. The appointment was made during a special meeting called to address personnel matters. District Superintendent Mary Fassett has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation of an unspecified nature: PLAY (:29). Taibi will serve in a dual capacity, as both superintendent and high school principal, for an unspecified period of time. Also Tuesday, the board accepted the resignation of member Robert Criswell: PLAY (:27). Criswell's term runs through June 2015. The board is actively looking at how to fill the vacancy. The board also hired Marie Culihan as Cairo-Durham Elementary School Assistant Principal. The vacancy was created by the recent resignation of Scott Richards. Culihan received a Masters of Science in Education from the College of St. Rose. She is was previously employed as a teaching and learning coach with the Schenectady City School District. Adam Clayton is reporting in the Register Star Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation is seeking a 4.4 percent rate increase, effective this time, next year. The company filed a rate plan with the state Public Service Commission last month; the plan is currently under review by the Commission. Central Hudson said the increase was necessary to modernize and strengthen its utility delivery system. It hopes to replace aging infrastructure, improve grid efficiency and develop community solar panel projects. The plan, if approved as proposed, will raise total average residential electricity bills by $4.78 per month, based on an average of 620 kilowatt-hours of electric usage per month. William J. Kemble is reporting in the Daily Freeman the Catskill Town Board Tues., Aug. 5, approved formation of the Leeds and Jefferson Heights Sewer District. The projected cost of the plan is $11 million. The measure was unanimously approved by the board following a public hearing that attracted approximately 50 people. Residents during the hearing raised concerns over the $766 per household, per year price tag attached to the project. "You're going to have senior citizens who can't pay it," one resident said. Several residents were troubled to learn they would not have vote on formation of the district. New lines would connect with the village system in Jefferson Heights and travel along state Route 23B to Leeds. Joe Gentile is reporting in The Daily Mail the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct has concluded its investigation of Robert Blain, former Prattsville Town Justice. Blain resigned during the conduct investigation, June 13. He has agreed not to seek or accept judicial office at any time in the future. The commission's scrutiny of Blain began in response to a state Comptroller's Office audit that uncovered multiple financial irregularities in court accounts. The audit found that during an 18-month period in 2011 and 2012, Blain and Town Justice Donald Olson failed to execute bank reconciliations properly or at all, deposit cash receipts in a timely manner and failed to enter all monies received into the court’s accounting system. Blain was appointed town court justice in Aug. 1987. He was subsequently elected, and served in the position for next 27 years. Blain is not an attorney. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

William J. Kemble is reporting in the Daily Freeman opponents of hydraulic fracturing are increasing pressure for the Hurley Town Board to institute a ban on the controversial gas-drilling process and associated activities. The town has a proposed fracking moratorium on the table that would bar reviews of any applications for any new wells, projects or businesses involving the practices of horizontal or directional drilling or hydraulic fracturing. In Ulster County, fracking has been banned in the towns of Marbletown, New Paltz, Rosendale, Rochester and Woodstock. A statewide moratorium on fracking has been in effect since June 2008 in New York. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has said he would not decide whether to lift that moratorium until a health impact review launched in 2012 is completed. The Hurley Town Board conducted a public hearing in March on a proposed ban, but it has said it does not want to act amid the state review. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
