Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail the Greene County Republican Committee nominated Greene County District Attorney Terry J. Wilhelm for Greene County Judge in a convention at the county courthouse Wed., May 29. If elected, Wilhelm would serve the remaining year of Judge George J. Pulver's term. Pulver will step down from the bench at the end of 2013. Wilhelm has served as District Attorney for the past 13 years. He previously served as a Catskill Village Justice and county law clerk. County judges serve 10-year terms. Jim Planck reports in The Daily Mail Hunter-Tannersville Central School District is the new Odyssey of the Mind World Champion. After making its way through regional and state contests, competing against 39 teams nationwide, the five-member team successfully completed the world finals held at Michigan State University last week. Hunter-Tannersville battled three teams from South Korea, two from Singapore and from Mexico and Poland, as well, to take the world crown. Superintendent Dr. Patrick Darfler-Sweeney said Tues, May 29, he is both very happy for the district and extremely proud of the team. “I’m ecstatic,” he said. Odyssey of the Mind team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretations of literary classics. The Register Star reports severe thunderstorms that originated between Rochester and Syracuse hit the area, Wed., May 29. Thousands of residents were left without power, and at least one reported fire was attributed to the storm. National Grid reported more than 3,000 customers without power during and after the storm in Hudson, Claverack, Greenport and Germantown. Central Hudson reported 650 customers lost power during the storm in Athens, Catskill, Cairo and Coxsackie. In Claverack a report of smoke in a basement led to several fire companies responding to put out a fire in the back of the house, suspected to be caused by a lightning strike. In Hudson, one of two steeples of the former St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, either pushed by wind or struck by lightning, fell into Sixth St., at the height of the storm. WGXC's Tanya Blue spoke to two men at the scene: PLAY clip (1:05). In Greene County, lightning reportedly struck a house on Summit Avenue in Catskill, and downed a limb, knocking out power on Woodland Ave. near William St. The National Weather Service reported no confirmed tornadoes, despite tornado warnings posted for several areas, including northern Greene County.

Rick Karlin reports at Capitol Confidential state Sen. Cecilia Tkaczyk announced Wed., May 29, Senate passage of a bill to designate State Route 375, which runs through Woodstock in Ulster County, as Levon Helm Memorial Boulevard. The bill passed in the Assembly last month. It now goes to the Governor for his signature. The late Helm was a founding member of The Band and he resided in the Woodstock area until his death from cancer in April 2012. Tkaczyk said, “This is a fitting tribute to a musician from Arkansas who became a symbol of Woodstock, and who did so much for Upstate NY." Nathan Mayberg reports in the Register Star the Columbia County Economic Development Corporation will file an application on behalf of Catamount Resort with the Capital Region Economic Development Council. The resort is seeking funds to aid in the construction of a sewage treatment plant for a proposed condominium and hotel project at the ski area located in southern Columbia County. A $1 million consolidated grant application for Catamount filed by the CEDC last year was denied. Catamount has promoted plans for a 148-condominium hotel with a pool, banquet and restaurant space. Developer Harry Freeman has proposed a three-phase development, with an estimated cost of $29 to $50 million. Jim Planck reports in The Daily Mail three Grand Union supermarkets in Greenville, West Coxsackie and Tannersville reopened as Tops Friendly Markets, Tues., May 28. The Tops company is based in western New York and operates 159 supermarkets in New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont. Tops acquired the three Greene County stores last summer. At the former Bryant's supermarket in Greenville, the building underwent infrastructure upgrades and repairs, including numerous interior renovations. The new owners also created 20 part-time jobs and promoted four part-time employees to full-time status, according to store manager Edward Gendron. A number of public officials were on hand Tuesday, for the ribbon-cutting, including U.S. Representative Chris Gibson, state Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk, Assemblyman Pete Lopez, Greene County Legislator Chairman Wayne Speenburgh and Greene County Legislator Kevin Lewis. The Register Star is reporting the annual Victoria A. Simons Locavore Award has been expanded to include three winners this year. The award recognizes outstanding vision and accomplishment for increasing the availability, quantity, quality or distribution of local foods. Chefs, caterers, farms, and organizations and individuals involved with local food sourcing are eligible for the $1,000 award. Winners are announced at the Columbia County Fair on Labor Day. The deadline for nominations is July 31. The award recognizes Vicki Simons, long-time editor of The Independent newspaper, executive director of Columbia County Bounty and proponent of many causes targeting community improvement. The Daily Freeman is reporting the Kaaterskill Rail Trail project is about to become a reality. The 1.5-mile trail will have its official opening, June 1. The trail runs along a portion of the abandoned Ulster & Delaware Railroad between the Mountain Top Historical Society property and state Department of Environmental Conservation lands at the end of Laurel House Road. The trail is available for non-motorized use. The grand opening event on June 1 will take place at the Mountain Top Historical Society on state Route 23A in Haines Falls, and will feature remarks from the organizations that made the trail possible. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.

Parry Teasdale reports in the Columbia Paper the Chatham Town Board recently approved a resolution declaring the board's opposition to the New York SAFE Act on the grounds the legislation is unconstitutional. The resolution also requested the law be sent back to the legislature for reexamination and full review. With passage of the resolution, Chatham adds its name to the list of municipalities statewide calling for repeal or review of the gun control law adopted by the state legislature in January. A copy of the resolution will be sent to the governor and to Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin and state Senator Kathy Marchione, among others. The Hudson City Democratic Committee announced late Mon., May 27, its slate of candidates for the November election. According to a statement released by committee chairman Aaron Enfield, the committee endorsed Second Ward resident Victor Mendolia for Mayor, incumbent Donald Moore for Common Council President and newcomer Heather Campbell for City Treasurer. Enfield said the committee interviewed more than two dozen candidates for a total of 18 positions. He said, "...[T]he Hudson City Democratic Committee feels confident that these individuals represent the best candidates to unite the city and move the city forward.” NOTE: Mendolia is a WGXC programmer.

The Daily Mail is reporting the first five of 19 new trees to be planted as part of the Catskill Main Street Memorial Tree Program were placed on Main Street earlier this month. The trees were all planted by Story's Nursery in Freehold. Each tree is sponsored by an individual or business. Hudson Talbott, one of the organizers, said the trees will be planted in batches of five. The next group will likely be planted in July. Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail the village of Tannersville paid tribute to the past and present soldiers of the Mountaintop during its annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony, Sun., May 26. The parade kicked off in blustery winds and sporadic rain, marching from the Bank of Greene County to the American Legion Veteran’s Monument on Main Street. The speaker was Dr. Patrick Darfler-Sweeney, superintendent of the Hunter-Tannersville Central School District. He spoke of the history of Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day in the years after the Civil War. Memorial Day was made official May 5, 1868 and New York was the first state to recognize it in 1873, he said. Richard Dunham writes at Capitol Confidential congressman Chris Gibson could face a well-financed Democrat in his next campaign, according to the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. However, said Rep. Greg Walden of Oregon, the second-term incumbent won’t be outworked. He said Gibson is “a blue-collar Republican. He’s earned everything he’s gotten in life.” Democrat Sean Eldridge, president of the investment fund Hudson River Ventures and husband of Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, has filed documents with the Federal Election Commission paving the way for a challenge in 2014. Of Eldridge, Walden said, “He’s worth a lot of dough. You’ve got to respect that.” He said Gibson’s work ethic more than compensates for his opponent’s wealth. Communities throughout the region have scheduled Memorial Day events to honor the men and women who have died in service to the United States.

CAIRO
The town will hold a ceremony and parade beginning at 11 a.m. The parade will end at the Angelo Canna Town Park.

CATSKILL
A parade and ceremony will be held beginning at 4 p.m. The parade will travel Water Street to Main Street and end with a ceremony at the  Greene County Courthouse. U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson and state Assemblyman Peter Lopez will speak.

CHATHAM
The annual Chatham Memorial Day Parade will kick off at 11 a.m. The parade route is as follows: Step off at the American Legion Post at Woodridge Ave. and continues down Kinderhook St. to Central Square. Proceeds down Main St. to the gazebo near the veteran’s memorial at Park Row/Main St., where memorial observances will commence. Afterwards, the parade continues down Hudson Ave. to Hoffman St. and back to the Post.

COPAKE
The Copake Memorial Day Parade will kick off at 11 a.m. Parade route is as follows: Mountain View Rd. near the Town Park to Farm Rd. and Main St. A memorial service will commence at the War Memorial and then proceed to the VFW property on County Route 7A.

GHENT
The annual Ghent Memorial Day Parade will kick off at 9 a.m. The Parade route is as follows: Rt. 66 near the Dairy Queen south to the Ghent Firehouse. Memorial services will commence near the bandstand.

HUDSON
The annual Hudson Memorial Day Parade will step off at 10:15 a.m. The parade will begin at Seventh Street Park in Hudson, moving down Warren Street to Fourth St. and across, ending at the Columbia County Courthouse. Memorial service will be conducted at the veteran memorials in the courthouse square.

KINDERHOOK
The Town of Kinderhook Annual Memorial Day Parade is being held in the Village of Valatie. The parade will start at 10 a.m.. The parade route is as follows: Make a left on Mechanic St., take a right onto Main St., another right onto Lake St. and a left onto Church St. The parade will end at Glynn Square for a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial.

KINGSTON
The Kingston Veterans Association will conduct a service at 1 p.m. in front of City Hall on Broadway. U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson will be the keynote speaker. The service will be followed by a parade up Broadway at 1:45 p.m.

PINE PLAINS
A parade will start at 10:30 a.m. at the firehouse on state Route 82 and proceed to the town clock tower and then Evergreen Cemetery. The event is being sponsored by American Legion Post 426 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5519.

RED HOOK
A parade and ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at Red Hook High School and end at Memorial Square Park. The events are being hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars post 7765.

RHINEBECK
A ceremony sponsored by the American Legion Post 429 will begin at 9:15 a.m. in the hamlet of Rhinecliff. Line-up for the parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds and step off at 10:30 a.m. The parade will begin at the corner of Mulberry Street and Platt Ave., then proceed south on U.S. Route 9 to a flag-raising at the U.S. Post Office before ending at the Rhinebeck Cemetery. Memorial services will be held at the cemetery.

TIVOLI
Services hosted by Harris Smith American Legion Post will begin at 10 a.m. at the Red Church on state Route 9G. Tivoli Mayor Bryan Cranna will be the speaker.

Bradley Manning's 12-week trial commences on Monday (3 June) and the film may have been released to take advantage of that date. On the 17th of April, hundreds of Palestinians filled the streets in the West Bank in protest to mark Palestinian Prisoners Day. Right now there nearly 5000 Palestinian security prisoners in Israeli jails, 14 of them are women. More than half have been convicted, 33 percent have not been sentenced and 3 percent are being held in administrative detention. 235 of Palestinian prisoners are minors ranging in age from 14 to 18. As many listeners may know, Palestinian activists are often targeted and detained. In prison, tactics are used such as solitary confinement and forbidding family contact.
