Local Memorial Day observations

Communities throughout the region have scheduled Memorial Day events to honor the men and women who have died in service to the United States.

CAIRO
The town will hold a ceremony and parade beginning at 11 a.m. The parade will end at the Angelo Canna Town Park.

CATSKILL
A parade and ceremony will be held beginning at 4 p.m. The parade will travel Water Street to Main Street and end with a ceremony at the  Greene County Courthouse. U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson and state Assemblyman Peter Lopez will speak.

CHATHAM
The annual Chatham Memorial Day Parade will kick off at 11 a.m. The parade route is as follows: Step off at the American Legion Post at Woodridge Ave. and continues down Kinderhook St. to Central Square. Proceeds down Main St. to the gazebo near the veteran’s memorial at Park Row/Main St., where memorial observances will commence. Afterwards, the parade continues down Hudson Ave. to Hoffman St. and back to the Post.

COPAKE
The Copake Memorial Day Parade will kick off at 11 a.m. Parade route is as follows: Mountain View Rd. near the Town Park to Farm Rd. and Main St. A memorial service will commence at the War Memorial and then proceed to the VFW property on County Route 7A.

GHENT
The annual Ghent Memorial Day Parade will kick off at 9 a.m. The Parade route is as follows: Rt. 66 near the Dairy Queen south to the Ghent Firehouse. Memorial services will commence near the bandstand.

HUDSON
The annual Hudson Memorial Day Parade will step off at 10:15 a.m. The parade will begin at Seventh Street Park in Hudson, moving down Warren Street to Fourth St. and across, ending at the Columbia County Courthouse. Memorial service will be conducted at the veteran memorials in the courthouse square.

KINDERHOOK
The Town of Kinderhook Annual Memorial Day Parade is being held in the Village of Valatie. The parade will start at 10 a.m.. The parade route is as follows: Make a left on Mechanic St., take a right onto Main St., another right onto Lake St. and a left onto Church St. The parade will end at Glynn Square for a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial.

KINGSTON
The Kingston Veterans Association will conduct a service at 1 p.m. in front of City Hall on Broadway. U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson will be the keynote speaker. The service will be followed by a parade up Broadway at 1:45 p.m.

PINE PLAINS
A parade will start at 10:30 a.m. at the firehouse on state Route 82 and proceed to the town clock tower and then Evergreen Cemetery. The event is being sponsored by American Legion Post 426 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5519.

RED HOOK
A parade and ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at Red Hook High School and end at Memorial Square Park. The events are being hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars post 7765.

RHINEBECK
A ceremony sponsored by the American Legion Post 429 will begin at 9:15 a.m. in the hamlet of Rhinecliff. Line-up for the parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds and step off at 10:30 a.m. The parade will begin at the corner of Mulberry Street and Platt Ave., then proceed south on U.S. Route 9 to a flag-raising at the U.S. Post Office before ending at the Rhinebeck Cemetery. Memorial services will be held at the cemetery.

TIVOLI
Services hosted by Harris Smith American Legion Post will begin at 10 a.m. at the Red Church on state Route 9G. Tivoli Mayor Bryan Cranna will be the speaker.
