W.T. Eckert is reporting in The Daily Mail how the ongoing Town of Stockport fiscal management scandal has impacted the Town of New Baltimore. Questions around CPA Brian Fitzgerald's performance were raised during a recent meeting of the Town Board. Brian Fitzgerald is the town's accountant and bookkeeper. He is also the nephew of Stockport's former accountant, Mark Fitzgerald. An independent audit of the town's books uncovered a $250,000 shortfall in the general fund. Mark Fitzgerald left the town's employ shortly after the audit was initiated in July. While the two men own separate companies, at times they "back each other up," according to New Baltimore Town Supervisor Susan O'Rorke. Brian Fitzgerald has strongly urged New Baltimore to conduct an independent audit, but that may be cost prohibitive, O'Rorke said. The board agreed it was time to put out a Request for Proposals for bookkeeping and accounting services, and formed a committee to move the process forward. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

Jimmy Vielkind is reporting in the Times Union the New York State United Teachers spent approximately $4.5 million in this year's election. Most of that sum was used to pay for polling, as well as television and radio advertisements in eight state Senate races. The union's support helped eventually boost Democrats to victory. Almost a half million came in direct contributions to candidates and another half million was spent on internal "member-to-member" communications that are not required to be disclosed. According to officials, NYSUT's strategy stemmed from disappointment with legislation enacted by Senate Republicans, working with Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo over the past two years. The union was particularly vexed by 2011 legislation that lowered pension benefits for newly hired public workers. Read the full story in the Times Union.

Lissa Harris reports at the Watershed Post Sullivan and Ulster counties, along with their town and village governments and some non-profits, can apply for federal aid for Sandy-related spending. Residents are eligible to apply for individual aid, as well. Sullivan County officials announced a Disaster Recovery Center is expected to be set up in that county by the end of the week. Ulster County made the announcement on the Ulster County Emergency Management blog. Officials advised entities applying for public aid, "stay tuned for more information." Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail the Town of Cairo has adopted its 2013 budget, incorporating minor changes suggested during its recent public hearing. The spending plan includes a 1.9 percent tax levy increase, falling well within the guidelines of the state's two percent tax cap. The board approved a public request to include additional funds for the Department of the Aging. The board rejected a request to further increase the allocation for the Cairo Public Library. Other changes included in the new budget: Changing a code enforcement position from part- to full-time, increasing the deputy highway superintendent from part- to full-time status, and adding to the Highway Department staff. Casey Seiler reports in the Times Union Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo created a 10-member panel Tues., Nov. 13, to investigate the "response, preparation and management of New York's power utility companies" in the wake of Superstorm Sandy's downstate devastation, as well as the damage upstate from tropical storms Irene and Lee in 2011. Cuomo said the panel's mission was "not going to be about tinkering on the edges" of the current system of power delivery. While his executive order includes no deadline for the inquiry to be done, the governor said he expects its recommendations to be taken up by the Legislature in its January session. The investigation panel was created by executive order according to the provisions of the century-old Moreland Act, which grants the governor broad power to set up a special commission to examine "the management and affairs of any department, board, bureau or commission of the state." Kemble reports in the Daily Freeman the Catskill Town Board has been informed Catskill school district officials have turned down a request to pay for two-thirds of the legal cost of challenges to property assessments. In a letter to the Town Board, school Superintendent Kathleen Farrell said the Board of Education did not believe a commitment to the cost-sharing arrangement was prudent, given the district's limited funds. Farrell further stated that in most instances, as the assessing unit, the town is responsible for determining and defending a given assessment. However, the board would be willing to consider sharing costs on a case by case basis, Farrell wrote. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.

Lissa Harris is reporting at the Watershed Post power outages persist in Sullivan and Ulster counties, two weeks after Hurricane Sandy hit the region. According to Central Hudson Gas & Electric, more than 200 households in the Sullivan County town of Neversink, and nearly 400 Ulster County households remain without power. Central Hudson was expected to fully restore Neversink by mid-day Tues., Nov. 13. The utility provided no estimated restoration time for the Ulster County towns of Denning, Rochester and Wawarsing. Nathan Mayberg reports in the Register Star the town of Claverack and the Preservation League of New York recently announced funding has been approved for an engineering study of the 140-year-old Shaw Bridge in Claverack. The bridge is currently closed due to the vulnerable nature of its wooden deck. The study is part of a town project to save and preserve the iron arched bridge. The Shaw Bridge is believed to be the only existing bridge of its kind in the country. It is located on Van Wyck Lane over Claverack Creek. The plan is to eventually re-open the span to pedestrian and vehicle traffic, only. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Adam Shanks reports in the Register Star Democrat Cheryl Roberts has conceded to incumbent Republican Steve McLaughlin in the 107th Assembly District contest. “After reviewing the number of affidavits, emergency and absentee ballots reported as returned to the Washington, Columbia and Rensselaer County boards of elections, it is clear that Mr. McLaughlin will win the race for the 107th Assembly seat,” Roberts said in a statement, Tues., Nov. 13. Roberts would have needed to win 80 percent those ballots to make up the deficit left at the end of election night. The count will not be final for another few weeks. The BBC is reporting Richard Robbins, the composer who scored such Merchant Ivory films as "A Room with a View," "Howards End"  and "The Remains of the Day," has died. He died Nov. 7, of Parkinson's disease at his home in Rhinebeck. He was 71. Robbins scored almost every film made by director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant from "The Europeans" in 1979 to "The White Countess" in 2005. He is survived by his longtime partner, composer and artist Michael Schell. Sounds Forms host Peter Wetzler interviewed Robbins in 2011 as part of the Conversations with Composers series.

Ariel Zangla reports in the Daily Freeman Greene County lawmakers are considering raises for five county employees. The Legislature has now scheduled four public hearings on Mon., Nov. 19, to take comment on the proposals to raise the salaries of the county treasurer, clerk, administrator, sheriff and commissioner of the Department of Social Services. The amount of the salary increases vary, from 1.5 percent for the county administrator, to 17 percent for the county clerk. Melanie Lekocevic reports in The Daily Mail the recent Coxsackie town budget hearing elicited little comment from the community, and no opposition was expressed. The town's 2013 spending plan will raise the tax levy by slightly more than half a percent. The Town Council is expected to vote on the proposal at a meeting this week. Because the Town Council pared down the budget so much last year, there were few cuts necessary this time around, Lekocevic writes. Billy Shannon and Tom Casey report in the Register Star on the role Columbia County and Hudson city firefighters are playing in the ongoing storm recovery efforts on Long Island. Since the day after Hurricane Sandy hit, causing widespread flooding, fires and power outages, county personnel have been deployed to various locations downstate. The volunteers are assigned to Long Island firehouses, where they deal with fires and other emergencies while many of the local firefighters deal with damage to their own property. Members of the Chatham and Niverville fire departments are stationed in Meadowmere, Queens. Hudson volunteers are currently working in Oceanside and Island Park. The area is just north of Long Beach, which saw some of the worst storm damage. Read the full story in the Register Star.

WGXC's Tony Fallon, a resident of Cairo, lived in Long Beach for 37 years and still has family on the island. On one of his recent trips to help with the clean up last week, Fallon called in to the WGXC Afternoon Show, Thurs., Nov. 8. Palenville: The Palenville Fire Department and its Ladies’ Auxiliary will hold a ceremony starting at 11 a.m. today at the Veterans Memorial Monument, 717 state Route 32A. The ceremony will include the national anthem, an invocation, a wreath laying and the playing of taps. Light refreshments will follow.

Ulster County

Ellenville: The American Legion will hold a ceremony starting at 11 a.m. today at its post on U.S. Route 209.
Olive: A service will be held starting at 11 a.m. today at the American Legion Hall on Mountain Road in the hamlet of Shokan.
Shawangunk: A service will begin at 11 a.m. today at Wallkill Library Park.

Northern Dutchess

Hyde Park: A memorial ceremony hosted by American Legion Post 1303 will begin at 10:30 a.m. today at the Town Hall, 4383 U.S. Route 9. Former town Supervisor Tom Martino will be the keynote speaker. Also, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Home and Library on Route 9 will have free admission today.
Pine Plains: A memorial service hosted by American Legion Post 426 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5519 will begin at 11 a.m. today at the clock tower on South Main Street (state Route 82). Iraqi War veteran and retired Air Force Master Sgt. Alisa Connley will be the keynote speaker.
Rhinebeck: A service hosted by American Legion Post 429 will begin at 11 a.m. today in the Rhinebeck Cemetery at the corner of U.S. Route 9 and Mill Road.
