Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail repairs are ongoing at the Village of Catskill Wastewater Treatment Facility after it suffered heavy damage during Hurricane Sandy, Tues., Oct. 30. The main pump room, at the facility located on lower Main Street, was flooded by more than 11 feet of water, and forced a shutdown of the three sewage pumps. An emergency diesel pump was immediately installed to keep the plant running. By Sat., Nov. 3, the repairs were complete and the facility was functioning normally. Some minor cleanup work remains, as well as repairs to the heating and hot water systems. The cost of the repairs is expected to be nearly $70,000. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

Stories that made the news, Nov. 2 to Nov. 4, 2012

W.T. Eckert reported in The Daily Mail Greene County has issued a Code Red to residents for a potential, short-term fuel shortage. Chairman Wayne Speenburgh said the purpose of the notification was to share information the county Legislature had after monitoring the growing lines for gas in Ulster County. He said as of Sat., Nov. 3, the Cumberland Farms in Cairo and an unidentified station in Hunter reported running out of gas. In addition, lengthy lines were reported at Slater's gas station on state Route 32 in Cairo, over the weekend. Speenburgh said the increased demand was due to the region’s gas being diverted south out of the Port of Albany. There is no indication the county will suffer a long-term shortage, but Speenburgh advised residents to be more conservative with their gas consumption. Read the full story in The Daily Mail. Kyle Adams updated this story, Mon., Nov. 5, reporting the fuel shortages have now eased, according to Speenburgh. “Though we had a couple of stations run out of gas yesterday, we are up and running,” he told the paper. There may continue to be sporadic shortages due to late deliver as a result of a backup at the Port of Albany. Columbia County Sheriff David W. Harrison Jr. reported two members of the Columbia County Emergency Management Office have been deployed to New York City by request of the New York State Office of Emergency Management. In a press release issued Sat., Nov. 3, Harrison said Director William Black and Deputy Director Paul D'Onofrio left Saturday for a 72-hour deployment to Queens, to assist with distribution of supplies, in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Ariel Zangla reports in the Daily Freeman 15 state troopers from Ulster and Greene counties are among the law-enforcement personnel to travel south to help residents. Troopers are in Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island to aid those police departments with a variety of tasks, including crime-suppression patrols to traffic details. United Way of Columbia and Greene counties has designated two collection points for Hurricane Sandy relief items. Articles needed are personal care items, towels, soap, diapers, water and non-perishable food. Drop-off points are at Apple Ice House on Route 9, just past the Hannaford Market, in Livingston, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday; and in Claverack at the Second Best Consignment Shop on Route 23, next to Red Apple Realty, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The Hillrock Estate Distillery opened its doors, Sat., Nov. 3, in Ancram, one of the few "field to glass" distillers in the world. The Daily Freeman is reporting Republican Assemblyman George Amedore of Rotterdam holds a three-point lead over Democrat Cecilia Tkaczyk (pronounced KAT-chik) of Duanesburg, in the race for the seat in the state’s new 46th Senate District. According to a poll by the Siena College Research Institute, Amedore leads Tkaczyk, president of the Duanesburg Board of Education, 47 to 44 percent. The 46th District includes all of Greene and Montgomery counties; parts of Albany, Schenectady and Ulster counties.

Jim Planck writes in The Daily Mail the idea of altering the proposed Town and Village of Catskill sewer line extension continues to evolve. Officials from the towns of Athens and Cairo, and Greene County, gathered Thurs., Nov. 1 to learn more about the options available, and the potential costs involved. The current plan calls for the extension of the $8.6 million Leeds project. If more than one town participates, the county would have the option to assist. The Leeds project will connect the hamlet to the Village of Catskill's sewer plant. On Thursday, a representative of consultant Delaware Engineering presented additional options to include the Town of Athens, adding up 50 users, and into the Town of Cairo, adding nearly 300 households to the system. Rick Karlin is reporting at Capitol Confidential in the wake of this week's storm, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has suspended or extended several deadlines for a variety of mundane tasks. The State Department of Motor Vehicles renewal deadlines have been extended for residents of New York City, and in Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties. The State Department of Taxation and Finance also announced the extension of certain tax filing and payment deadlines. All 62 New York counties are eligible for these extensions since Cuomo declared a statewide of state of emergency, and President Obama authorized federal aid and assistance for the state. Green Party Presidential Candidate Dr. Jill Stein spoke by phone with "Tell It Like It Is" co-hosts Christina Malisoff and Kieran Riley, Mon., Oct. 29. W.T. Eckert reports in The Daily Mail three local fire departments have been deployed to help with storm cleanup in Nassau County. A request was received from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control to deploy two engines from the Greenville Fire and the Athens Volunteer departments, and one water tanker from the East Durham Fire Company. Greenville and Athens are working in the Oceanside Fire District, the East Durham tanker is working in operations out of the Long Beach Fire District. A total of 11 firefighters offered their services: Two from East Durham, five from Greenville and four from Athens. Both men and equipment are expected home 6 p.m., Fri., Nov. 2. Nathan Mayberg reports in the Register Star power was restored to most locations in Columbia County, Wed., Oct. 31, following Superstorm Sandy, Mon., Oct. 29. One notable exception was the town of Ancram on the southern end of the county, where nearly 400 customers of Central Hudson Gas & Electric remain in the dark. More than 11,000 Central Hudson households in Ulster County, and more than 3,000 in Dutchess County also remain without power. Central Hudson reportedly expects to have the lights back on by Friday. Both NYSEG and National Grid restored power to all but a few of their customers, as of Wednesday evening. Casey Seller reports at Capitol Confidential the 2,440 paroled sex offenders under the supervision of the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision will once again be closely monitored as part of the agency’s Operation Halloween, a special seasonal protocol designed “to help ensure that New York’s children – and their parents – can safely enjoy holiday festivities in their neighborhoods.”  As part of the department's effort, which took effect in 2006, officers impose special conditions, conduct surveillance and make unannounced home visits and curfew checks at sex offender’s residences on Halloween. Seller also writes the state Division of Criminal Justice Services is reminding parents to use Facebook to access information about medium- and high-risk sex offenders living in their community. Michael Ryan reports in The Daily Mail no significant damage or minor flooding was reported in the mountaintop towns of Windham and Prattsville this week, communities deeply impacted by Tropical Storm Irene last year. The same was true in the neighboring towns of Ashland, Lexington and Jewett. Some trees and branches were down, and power was lost for a few hours in some locations. The Schoharie Creek swelled, but no flooding occurred. The state of emergency in effect countywide since 5 p.m., Mon., Oct. 29, was lifted Tuesday evening, though many shelters and emergency responders will continue to monitor conditions and remain available. Less than a thousand households in the county remained without power, Tuesday night, most located in Lexington, Jewett and Hunter.

Village and county officials toured effected businesses in Catskill, Tues., Oct. 30. The Freightmaster Building at The Point, part of a county park complex, and the Port of Call restaurant sustained major damage in the storm. The water rose again early Tuesday when high tide flooded the ground floor of the building.

Firemen in Athens and Coxsackie continued to pump out compromised riverfront properties, Tuesday. State Route 385 which bisects the village, was closed most of the morning due to high water. Flood waters reached as far as the Stewart’s convenience store. In Coxsackie, firefighters continued to pump out homes and businesses in the area of Reed and South River streets. Debris was cleared and roads reopened early in the day.

Congressman Chris Gibson toured affected areas throughout the region, in Greene, Columbia, Otsego, Delaware, Dutchess and Ulster counties, surveying the damage, talking to local officials to coordinate a response and make his office available. Read both stories in The Daily Mail.

John Mason and Nathan Mayberg report in the Register Star in Columbia County, the worst threats from Superstorm Sandy were over by Tues., Oct. 30. Any chances of flooding from the Hudson River had passed, according to the National Weather Service, and the wind threat had also played out.

While thousands in the county awoke to no power, by day's end many outages were restored. According to county officials, some roads remained closed, but not enough to impede transportation. All school districts were open again Tuesday. The lone exception was Germantown Central, which experienced a power failure. Although power was expected to be restored for the majority of customers by the end of the day Tuesday, a lack of power in some parts of the county could continue for days. Continued outages were reported in Germantown, Livingston, Taghkanic, Ancram and Gallatin. Columbia County was one of the hardest hit areas, according to a National Grid spokesman.

The American Red Cross shelter at the Taghkanic Fire Station was slated to close at 8 p.m., Tuesday. Read the full story in the Register Star.

The Associated Press is reporting on the second powerless night in New York City since the storm hit, residents are grappling with how long it will take to get back to normal. Officials warned power may not be restored until the weekend. Some bus service resumed and some bridges were reopened by midday Tuesday, but transit officials said they could not predict when the subway system would run again. The death toll now stands at 18. Schools will remain closed through Wednesday. The New York Stock Exchange will reopen Wednesday, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg will ring the opening bell. Read the full story in the Times Union.

Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail Greene County saw scattered power outages, flooding, downed trees and power lines, and some road closures, but overall the impact of "Superstorm" Sandy proved to be less severe in Columbia and Greene counties than expected. Central Hudson reported less than 1,000 customers without power in Greene County this morning, mostly in the towns of Hunter, Jewett and New Baltimore as a result of high winds. In Catskill, flood waters closed down lower Main St., below Henry, as well as upper and middle W. Main St. The water began to recede around 4:30 a.m. Those roads are expected to be re-opened early this morning, but may have to be closed again at high tide, later today. A Code Red emergency alert was issued in Coxsackie at 3 a.m., as a result of flooding on South River St.

NY Alert is reporting Route 385 N and S are closed until further notice in the town of Athens at 5th Street. due to flooding. New York State Hwy 22 at County Route 21 in Hillsdale remains closed due to downed trees and wires across the road.

John Mason and Nathan Mayberg report in the Register Star a state of emergency declared in Columbia County Monday night will continue through 7 a.m., Tuesday. The National Weather Service's flood warning will remain in effect through Tuesday morning for areas along the Hudson River in both counties. Residents in the valley regions, away from the Hudson River, a NWS spokesman said, should be safe from flooding. Winds have slowed, but the rain will continue off and on through Wednesday.

Central Hudson reported approximately 1,400 customers are without power in southern Columbia and northern Dutchess counties, as of early Tuesday. An expected restoration time was not available. In addition, 30,000 households are without power in Ulster County. As of 6 a.m., Tuesday, NYSEG reported 1,200 customers without power in Columbia Co. National Grid reported more than 3,000 customers without power in the Capital Region, 524 in Columbia Co. Officials remind anyone without electrical power:

• Do not use generators, gas grills or other combustible devices in your home


• If you reside alone, make arrangements with neighbors to check on each other if your area is experiencing a power outage


• Basic non electronic phones should work during power outages

The State of Emergency will be allowed to expire at 7 a.m. this morning. It will NOT be extended. All county buildings will be open and employees should report to work as usual. There are still some scattered road closures and power outages so residents are encouraged to use caution when on the roadways. There is flooding along the Hudson River effecting some roadways.
