Adam Clayton and David Lee reported in the Register Star a grease fire significantly damaged a Valatie building early Sat., May 24. The fire began on the stove and worked its way into the walls of the apartment building. No injuries were reported, but all six tenants were displaced. Wayne Huyck (h-AY-k), Niverville's fire chief, said the building is a total loss.

Jim Planck reported in The Daily Mail the Catskill Park Coalition, an alliance of 26 Catskill Park advocacy, not-for-profit and special interest groups, has launched a new website to present the Catskill Mountains to the public. Member groups range from the New York City-based Natural Resources Defense Council to the Catskill Mountain Club, a decade-old hiking and outdoor events group. The coalition is committed to broadening public appreciation of Catskill Park. The website can be found at www [dot] Catskill Park Coalition [dot] org.

Wlliam J. Kemble reported in the Daily Freeman Bard College held its 154th graduation, Sat., May 24. U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi delivered the commencement address advising the 455 graduates to treasure being from a small school that makes a big impact. Pelosi cited the Bard Prison Initiative as an example. She said the program, once a senior project, is now a model recognized by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo for educating incarcerated youth statewide.

Adam Clayton reported in the Register Star the First Presbyterian Church in Hudson announced the restoration of the church's rose window is set to begin. The announcement was made at the 19th annual Friends of the First Presbyterian Church meeting, Sat., May 24. The Friends have raised $157,000, a little less than $7,000 shy of its $164,000 goal. Friends president Phil Forman said the window will be restored this year. Chuck Woodard, of Architectural Stained Glass of Great Barrington, Mass., will handle the restoration.

As reported Sat., May 24, the Federal Communications Commission last week granted the renewal to free103point9 of the license for WGXC 90.7-FM through 2022, as part of a process to get each AM, FM, noncommercial educational FM, FM translator, and Low Power FM station throughout the country to renew their licenses.

5:45 a.m.: In Copake, American Legion Post 1160 Copake Falls and the Copake VFW Post 7955 will leave Copake Town Hall at 5:45 a.m. to visit 13 combined sites of cemeteries and veterans’ memorials located in Craryville, Ancramdale, Ancram, Copake Falls and Copake, returning at approximately 9:45 a.m. The tri-town area Memorial Day Parade will be held in Ancram starting at 11 a.m. and originating on Route 7, near Ancram Town Hall, finishing at the Blass Memorial Field with ceremonies. Refreshments will be served after the ceremonies at the Ancram Firehouse.

7 a.m.: Austerlitz will hold its Memorial Day ceremony on the village green at 812 Route 203. Coffee and doughnuts will be served afterward at Town Hall.

8 a.m.: The Stuyvesant Falls VFW Memorial Post 9593 will leave the post on Route 25 in Stuyvesant Falls to lay memorial wreaths and perform the post’s ritual at three cemeteries and two firehouses before returning to the post for brunch prepared by the wives of post members.

9 a.m.: The Athens Memorial Day Parade begins from the Little League fields to the triangle for a service at the American Legion Hall.

9 a.m.: The American Legion Post 252 of Philmont will begin Memorial Day services with a veterans’ breakfast beginning at 7 a.m. at the Vanderbilt House. The parade will line up at 8:30 a.m. at the old American Legion building and step off at 9 a.m. It will proceed along Main St. to the Memorial Park, where a service will feature keynote speaker U.S. Navy Capt. William Snyder, who works in the office of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Services at the Mellenville cemetery and the Catholic cemetery follow.

10 a.m.: The Germantown Memorial Day Parade will start on Main Street and finish at Palatine Park. The guest speaker will be Southern Columbia VFW Post 6398 Commander and retired U.S. Marine Master Sgt. Roger Rekow. The Germantown Fire Company will provide refreshments. A reception will be held at the Legion Post on 346 Woods Road at noon.

10:15 a.m.: The Hudson Memorial Day Parade will begin at 10:15 a.m. at the Seventh Street Park Veterans Monument. The parade will then proceed down Warren Street and across Fourth Street to the Courthouse Park where the Memorial Day services will be held. Columbia County Judge Richard Koweek will be the guest speaker. A reception will follow the ceremonies at Hudson American Legion Post 184 located at 7 Fairview Ave. in Greenport. Seventh Street will be closed from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and, East and West Court streets will be closed from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

10 a.m.: The town of Kinderhook’s Memorial Day Parade will be held in Niverville. The parade will line up near the RnD Deli at 122 Lake St., and the parade will proceed down Main Street (Route 28) to Niverville Fire Department Station No. 1.

11 a.m.: The Ancram parade will begin at Ancram Town Hall, located at 1416 Route 7, and proceed to the Ancram Firehouse at the intersection of Route 7 and Route 82. A ceremony will be held immediately afterward at the town’s war memorial. Routes 82 and 7 will be closed from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Parking will be available at Blass Memorial Park and Town Hall.

11 a.m.: Cairo Memorial Day Parade at Angelo Canna Park, Cairo town park, just behind Main St., Cairo, NY Annual event sponsored by American Legion Mohican Post #983 from Town Hall to the Cairo Town Park.

11 a.m.: The Chatham Memorial Day Parade steps off from American Legion Post 42, located on 34 Wood Bridge Ave., and proceeds to the village green for a ceremony. The parade then continues back to the post where there will be an open house with refreshments.

Gibson voted against an amendment to HR 4435 to prohibit military spending to deal with climate change, which passed 231-192. Gibson also voted to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, by the end of 2016, which failed 177 voting to close the prison, to 247 to keep it open. Gibson also voted against a bill that passed 303-121, that would scale back the National Security Agency’s authority to collect bulk data on Americans’ phone calls and other telecommunications under federal statutes such as Section 215 of the USA Patriot Act. [caption width="191" align="alignright"] The Wage/Working jukebox heads from the Cairo Library to the Athens Cultural Center.[/caption]The Athens Cultural Center and WGXC 90.7-FM announce an exciting participatory workshop, "Audio Portraits: An Introduction to Interviewing," for ages 14-adult. In this workshop participants produce a short audio portrait of the working life of an Athens resident to be included in the Wage/Working Jukebox which will be on exhibit at the Athens Cultural Center, 24 Second Street from May 31-Dec. 1, 2014. Wage/Working is a jukebox-based installation featuring stories and sounds from the working lives of residents of Greene and Columbia counties. The stories are edited to a length, corresponding with the amount of time it takes each interviewee to earn $1, creating an inverse relationship between monetary value and time. The project, which was first exhibited at the Cairo Public Library, was created by Tennessee Watson and Laura Hadden as a part of an AIR Live Interactive Residency during the Spring of 2013 at free103point9 Wave Farm, and WGXC 90.7-FM in Acra, NY, with financial support provided, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). In this two-session workshop participants will learn the basics of documentary interviewing technique, digital audio field recording, story scripting and digital editing through guided tutorials and hands-on exercises; and with facilitator support will assemble a short audio portrait. Session 1 takes place Wednesday May 28, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Session 2 will be Friday, May 30, 6 to 9 p.m. Please note that participants must attend both sessions. Participants will also be required to do work outside of class prior to Session 2, which involves interviewing a community member about their work, reviewing the recording and creating a brief outline. These workshops, co-sponsored by WGXC, 90.7-FM, will take place at the Athens Cultural Center, 24 Second Street, Athens, and are offered free of charge but pre-registration is necessary. On Saturday May 31, from 5-7 PM, there will be an Opening Reception of the Wage/Working Jukebox at the Cultural Center featuring a listening session and celebration of pieces produced in the Audio Portraits workshop.

There is an orientation for WGXC programmers Tue., June 3 at 6 p.m. at the WGXC Hudson studio to be debriefed in advance of the June 10K Fund Drive. The general public and other volunteers are welcome to attend. This will give WGXC programmers the opportunity to learn specifics about the fundraising effort, daily goals, and how the whole thing works. Barbara Reina is reporting in the Register Star tests have detected a high level of the chemical compound 1,4-dioxane, a possible carcinogen, in a sample of ground water from the Dewey Loeffel Superfund site. The discovery prompted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to halt the release of Tank 18 into the Valatie Kill. The test sample was taken from the tank following processing at the site's treatment plant this month, and demonstrated a higher level of the compound 1,4-dioxane than previously treated samples. EPA officials are exploring the possibility of incorporating an additional filtration mechanism at the plant. In previous tests, levels of the compound have fluctuated between low and non-detectable levels, according to results published by the EPA. The plant at the Superfund site was designed to treat the contaminated ground water and liquid that seeps out from the landfill, called leachate. In preparation for continuous discharge of treated water from the plant, the EPA has been regularly sampling results after the ground water has been treated, before releasing it into the Valatie Kill. Brendan J. Lyons is reporting in the Times Union five correction officers have been placed on administrative leave at the Greene Correctional Facility in Coxsackie amid an internal investigation into allegations they encouraged and forced fights among the men incarcerated in the facility's high-security housing unit. The investigation is being handled by the inspector general's office for the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. The officers, including a sergeant, were placed on leave two weeks ago. A spokesperson for the state declined comment on the specifics of the allegations or what prompted the investigation. A person briefed on the matter, but not authorized to comment publicly, said the officers are alleged to have encouraged the fights in a special housing unit, known as "S-200." It is unclear how many incidents took place or whether the alleged assaults in the special housing unit were reported. Read the full story in the Times Union.

Kyle Adams is reporting in The Daily Mail Greene County is honoring and celebrating its emergency medical responders as part of National Emergency Medical Services Week. This slogan for this year's National Emergency Services Week is "Dedicated for Life." The purpose of the celebration is to bring together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety, and "to honor the dedication of those who provide day-to-day lifesaving services on medicine’s front line,” according to the American College of Emergency Physicians. Greene County has 11 EMS and five first-response EMS agencies, made up of approximately 110 individuals, who together respond to more than 8,000 calls a year for pre-hospital treatment and transport. Columbia County 911 is reporting via Facebook the National Weather Service in Albany is monitoring a strong thunderstorm in southwest Columbia County, in the Clermont/Germantown area. This storm has not reached "severe criteria" yet, but it is capable of producing 1/2" hail, frequent lightning and heavy rain. The storm is moving southeast. The chance of severe weather will continue into early evening, but the storms will be isolated. A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. for Columbia, Greene, Dutchess and Ulster counties.

Casey Seiler is reporting at Capitol Confidential Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has chosen former Buffalo-area Congresswoman Kathy Hochul (HOKE-ul) as his new running mate. She is replacing former Rochester Mayor Bob Duffy on the Democratic ticket. The announcement was made by Cuomo Wed., May 21, in a video announcement played for delegates at the state Democratic convention on Long Island: PLAY (:36) A former county clerk, Hochul won the Congressional seat in 2011. She was defeated a year later by Erie County Executive Chris Collins. If elected, Hochul will be the first Democratic female Lt. Governor in New York in more than 35 years. Melanie Lekocevic is reporting in The Daily Mail Coxsackie residents turned out for a recent Village Board meeting to voice their opposition to the building project under consideration for the American Valve site on Mansion St. The 74-unit senior and workforce housing development has drawn sharp opposition and given rise to the grassroots group, Citizens Against American Valve Project. The building project is spearheaded by downstate developer Kenneth Kearney, who is being assisted by the Greene County Industrial Development Agency. Opponents of the project, citing health and safety concerns, are demanding local officials oppose the project. Some contend the IDA should look at other uses for the site, such as using it as green space or perhaps youth sports fields for soccer or Little League. The parcel to be developed is a former toxic waste site deemed sufficiently rehabilitated for residential development by the state, but local residents doubt those claims. The Daily Freeman is reporting unemployment rates in local counties were sharply lower last month than in April 2013, according to the state Department of Labor. In some cases the rate fell below 5 percent. Columbia County had the lowest local jobless rate in April, at 4.7 percent, down from 6.2 percent one year ago. In Greene County, the rate fell to 6.3 percent, down from 8.8 percent in April 2013. Dutchess was the other local county with an unemployment rate below 5 percent last month, reporting a 4.9 percent jobless rate, down from 6.6 percent in one year ago. The New York county with the lowest unemployment rate last month was Tompkins (in the Ithaca area), at 3.5 percent. The highest rate, 10.3 percent, was recorded in Bronx County. Joe Gentile reported in the Register Star the Columbia County Board of Supervisors Health and Medical Services Committee abstained from taking action on the future of Pine Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at its monthly meeting, Tues., May 20. As the meeting took place, more than 30 protesters demonstrated outside 401 State St., in Hudson, against the possible sale of the county-owned facility. Pine Haven Director Art Proper reported the Pine Haven census has decreased over the past year. The 120-bed facility is currently home to 104 residents. Proper blamed the media attention around Pine Haven's future for the decrease in admissions. Board of Supervisors Chairman Pat Grattan announced an informational meeting will be held May 28. Donald Pryor, author of the report “The Future of County Nursing Homes in New York State” and the Mike McCarthy, the Pine Haven auditor and financial advisor, will speak. Grattan also said he anticipates the Health and Medical Services Committee will next meet to consider the question of privatization on May 29. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Voters overwhelmingly approved school budgets Tues., May 20, in both Columbia and Greene counties. As reported in the Register Star and The Daily Mail, voters in the Germantown Central School District passed that district's budget and a capital spending plan by nearly a four-to-one ratio and elected Jeremy Smith and Donald Coons to open seats on the Board of Education. The Hudson City School District's $45.2 million spending plan was approved by a wide margin with a final vote of 560-298. Voters also approved the sale of the former Greenport Elementary School to a private developer. Budgets for the Chatham, Ichabod Crane and New Lebanon school districts also passed, as did propositions offered by Ichabod Crane and New Lebanon. In Taconic Hills, challenger Nadine Gazzola edged out incumbent Harvey Weber to win a five-year term on the board. Weber will now serve out the remainder of Glenn Schermerhorn’s unexpired, three-year term. Spending plans in Catskill, Coxsackie-Athens and Hunter-Tannersville all passed easily. In the Cairo-Durham district, residents approved that district's $28.6 million spending plan, 529 to 433. The plan adopted by the Board of Education provided for housing pre-K through fifth grade at Cairo Elementary. That option did not allocate funding for the Durham Elementary School, but the board has yet to vote to formally close or limit its use. A public hearing on the future of the Durham building will be held 7 p.m., June 5.
