The Times Union reported the Harlem Valley Rail Trail was one of five new national recreation trails designated in New York Sat., June 7. Federal officials made the announcement in celebration of National Trails Day. The Harlem Valley Rail Trail includes a four-mile paved bicycle and pedestrian path extending under Mountain Road to Taconic State Park in Copake Falls. The 11-mile Harlem Valley Rail Trail in Dutchess County was also designated by the Secretary of the Interior and the National Park Service.

Melanie Lekocevic reported in The Daily Mail the Athens Citizens Development Committee presented its case against a proposed $1 billion West Point Partners power project to the Athens Village Board last week. Attorney Jerry Bunting said much of the group’s opposition to the project is based on the construction of the converter station and the route the underground cables would take. Athens Mayor Chris Pfister said he was opposed to the route as it currently stands, but other possible routes could be explored. Pfister said the village could profit from the project. ACDC would like the village board to adopt a formal resolution in opposition to the project.

Rick Karlin reported at Capitol Confidential the state's largest teachers union, New York State United Teachers, is adding to its ongoing lawsuit against the state’s property tax freeze. The union contends the school tax freeze instituted by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo chips away at local control and is unfair to districts whose residents vote to exceed the cap. The union's motion to amend its 2013 lawsuit is now before the state Supreme Court. If the court goes along with NYSUT's argument, the case against the tax cap and the tax freeze credit program will be combined and heard at a later date.

Kyle Adams reported in The Daily Mail Mountain Jam celebrated its 10th anniversary this weekend. The anniversary was marked with a giant red “Mountain Jam X” sign high on Hunter Mountain. Often ranked among the country’s best, the festival lineup included The Allman Brothers, on their farewell tour, Bob Weir & Ratdog, Pretty Lights and the Avett Brothers. The event started Thursday night and ran through Sunday.

Michael Ryan is reporting in the Windham Journal Greene County Administrator Shaun Groden has announced the extension of a grant deadline will allow for the construction of the Windham Mountain cell tower project to be extended until Labor Day. The tower will be used for emergency services, only. Funding for the project was provided by the division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services in light of the weaknesses exposed in the county's communication systems following Tropical Storm Irene in Aug. 2011. The new tower will be one of three linking Greene, Delaware and Schoharie counties and part of a long-term plan aimed at modernizing telecommunications. Greene County has also committed to investing $15 million to construct a series of 12 cell towers, countywide. The towers will eliminate gaps in cell phone coverage in the hamlets of Hensonville and Maplecrest in the town of Windham, virtually all of the town of Lexington and other remote areas. More than 50 parents, mostly in favor of keeping Durham Elementary School open, turned out to a public hearing for the Cairo-Durham School District June 5, 2014 on the fate of the school. (Click here and here and here to hear three parents upset about the issue.) In May, Cairo-Durham voters approved a budget based on a plan to close the school, though no official decision on the issue has been made. During the current school year, the school split up students from Durham Elementary and Cairo Elementary, with all K-2 students attending the Durham building, and third- through fifth-graders attending the Cairo building. This plan was designed to save money, but proved costly. School officials say they cannot afford two elementary schools, but many parents, many with fond memories of going to school at Durham Elementary, spoke at the hearing in favor of keeping that building open. Cairo-Durham Superintendent Mary Fassett said she had an informal discussion with state Sen. Cecilia Tkaczyk about the possible empty school, that led to a regional veteran's group touring the building for a possible relocation. (Click here to hear an excerpt from Fassett's announcement.) Arthur Cusano is reporting in the Register Star the new Greenport Community Center will open June 16. The building located at 500 Town Hall Drive will house the police department on the first floor. The senior center and the community center will be located on the top floor at ground level to allow easy access. The smoke-free facility will also house a nutrition center, and provide space for meetings and a polling station. The center will offer nutrition information, wellness promotion, classes and information about community resources on a regular basis. James Odato is reporting at Capitol Confidential the New York State Gaming Commission on Thurs., June 5,  reported lottery games resulted in more than $9 billion in gambling. That resulted in a profit of nearly $3.2 billion for education, a 4.2 percent increase over the 2012-13 fiscal year. Video lottery terminal players alone generated $916 million in profit. Joe Gentile is reporting in the Register Star Hudson has developed a sinkhole problem. Maintenance workers appeared early Wed., June 4, on Prospect Street to fix a 2-by-3 foot sinkhole that swallowed a section of roadway between Dodge and North Sixth streets. Road crews are scheduled to return to mend two other sinkholes, early Thursday. No injuries or property damage were reported, but Prospect Street remains closed between Dodge and North Sixth. Public Works Superintendent Rob Perry said another sinkhole, located at Franklin and Prospect, was on the same water main. He said the sinkholes are the direct result of an aged city infrastructure. Ariel Zangla is reporting in the Daily Freeman Greene County lawmakers agreed to apply for three state grants to fund the county's Microenterprise Assistance Program, pay for an infrastructure study and help cover the cost of an expansion at the Zoom Flume Water Park. The county Legislature voted early this week to authorize the submission of three applications to the state Office of Community Renewal for community development block grant funding. The Microenterprise Assistance Program is expected to fund eight microenterprise projects in the 2014 round. The infrastructure study would catalogue, map and document current infrastructure capacities for the water and sewer districts in the county. The funding sought for the Zoom Flume Water Park would go toward expanding the water park’s front entrance and creating a new gift shop, office space and ticketing center. Harney and Sons is headquartered in Millerton, Dutchess Co., and employs approximately 155 people. The company produces more than 300 tea blends for sale worldwide. The 70,000-square-foot plant was last occupied by the plastic netting manufacturer Phoenix Hudson, which ceased operations in 2013. The owners of Harney and Sons have so far declined comment on the company's plans for use of the building. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Kyle Adams is reporting in The Daily Mail a civil rights complaint alleging sexual abuse at the Greene County Jail has been settled out of court for $85,000. The lawsuit claimed an incarcerated woman suffered sexual abuse, harassment and humiliation at the hands of Corrections Officer Donald Schermerhorn, and implicated Jail Superintendent Michael Spitz and Greene County Sheriff Greg Seeley for allowing a sexually charged environment to exist. A similar case was brought and settled in August 2013 for $65,000. Schermerhorn, of Cairo, and Corrections Officer Ernest Dunn of Catskill, who was named in a separate case, were fired in late 2012, when the allegations of sexual abuse first came to light. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office has located the vehicle as well as the owner/operator. He s a resident of the area and at the time of the alleged incident was out attempting to locate his lost dog. This information was independently confirmed by a neighbor.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an attempted child abduction that occurred this weekend in Oak Hill, according to a public safety notice posted at the Cairo-Durham Central School District website. At approximately 8:06 p.m., Sun., June 1, an emergency call was received reporting a white male with white hair and a white beard driving a blue pick-up truck attempted to pick up two children in the area of Schoolhouse Hill Road. The truck is described as being a newer style, unknown make or model, single cab blue pick-up truck with an eight foot bed. The children involved sought help from an adult immediately and the unknown male drove off without further incident. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information to contact Senior Investigator Sean McCulloch at (518) 943-3300, extension 8018. If anyone should have a similar incident occur, they should call 911 right away.

Audrey Matott writes in The Daily Mail the Cairo Historical Society's Hometown Heroes Banner Program has proven to be a success. Society president John Kargoe reported to the Cairo Town Board Mon., June 2, banner installation for the year has been completed, but there continue to be requests for additional banners. He said a total of 212 banners have been hung from light posts and utility poles throughout the town and its hamlets. The qualify, an honoree must have served in the military and been a resident of Cairo. The historical society is developing a book in conjunction with the banners, as well. Cairo is the only town in the state of New York to have such a program, according to town board member Dan Joyce. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

Joe Gentile is reporting in the Register Star the Claverack Planning Board reviewed applications from an aspiring distiller and potential brewmaster, Mon., June 2. The board set a public hearing in July on Joseph Singleton's application for his micro-farm distillery to be located at 239 Millbrook Road, directly adjacent to the Triform Camphill Community. Singleton intends to operate a micro-farm distillery for producing bourbon and vodka. Joe Bell's application to open a microbrewery in his father's garage, located on Thielman Road, was referred to the Zoning Board of Appeals. Read the full story in the Register Star.
