Rotterdam resident and state Senate challenger George Amedore says incumbent Cecilia Tkaczyk (KAT-chik) may be a nice lady, but she is not representing everyone in the 46th Senate District right now. In an interview with Ed Fertik on WGXC Wed., May 14, Republican Amedore said he is taking a second shot at the seat he lost by 18 votes in 2012 because he does not believe government should be allowed to take away the individual's sense of freedom and ability to thrive: PLAY (1:28). Citing her record, Amedore accused Tkaczyk of failing to act in a bi-partisan manner. He also said she proposed legislation that, in his opinion, would do more harm to the state's economy than good: PLAY (1:16). Amedore appeared to be referring to Tkaczyk's introduction of a law to ban the transportation of hydraulic fracturing waste products into New York from out-of-state operations. That bill died in committee last month. Amedore is a homebuilder by profession. He represented the 105th Assembly District from mid-2007 through 2012. The 46th Senate District stretches across all or parts of Greene, Montgomery, Schenectady, Albany and Ulster counties. Kyle Adams is reporting in The Daily Mail without a work of public dissent or comment, the Catskill Village Board adopted its $4.39 million 2014-15 budget at an appropriations meeting, Tues., May 13. The spending plan calls for a 1.2 percent tax levy increase. The tax rate per thousand will increase seven cents to $22.27, or $7 per $100,000 of assessed value. Catskill Village President Vincent Seeley said the village realized notable savings this year by paying off debts, which helped offset rising costs in workers’ compensation insurance and employee benefits. Seeley said department heads have done an excellent job managing and keeping to their budgets. Over the next year, Seeley said, the village will be looking to partner with the town of Catskill on the Leeds sewer project as a long-term investment, as well as looking to clean up current revenue sources and to explore future income opportunities. Adam Clayton writes in the Register Star more than 100 people packed into Clinton Town Hall Tues., May 13, to hear from National Grid on the subject of a proposed power line expansion, part of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's Energy Highway initiative. The event was organized by Clinton Concerned Citizens and the Clinton Town Board, Scenic Hudson, the Olana Partnership and Farmers and Families for Claverack and Livingston. The one collective demand heard from residents during the meeting: Lower the proposed new transmission towers. Several in attendance said the proposed higher lines have already had an impact on real estate prices. A representative from Assembly member Didi Barrett's district office said they receive regular calls from companies interested in investing in Columbia County, but are concerned about property values plummeting from the expansion. The suggestion was also made to bury 50 out of the 153 miles of A/C power lines. Attendees were urged to communicate their dissatisfaction with the proposal and to keep the pressure on the state Public Service Commission and Cuomo's office. Casey Seiler is reporting at Capitol Confidential Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino has chosen Chemung County Sheriff Chris Moss as his running mate. The choice was made following “an exhaustive statewide search,” Astorino said in a video announcement released late Tues., May 13. The state Republican convention begins Wednesday in Westchester County. Moss is the president of the state Sheriffs Association and a board member of the state Association of Counties. He will address the convention, Thurs., May 15. Moss holds a master's degree in public administration from Marist College. He was among a group of sheriffs who took part in an April 2013 meeting with Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo in which, according to Moss and other participants, Cuomo advised the sheriffs to keep their criticisms of the SAFE Act gun control law to themselves. Patrick Grattan, Chairman of the Columbia County Board of Supervisors, announced Mon., May 12, the fate of the Pine Haven Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center will be considered by the board’s Committee on Health and Medical Services next week. According to a statement released by county Commissioner of Economic Development Kenneth Flood, the committee will consider two resolutions. The first will call for a continuation of plans to construct a new $32 million facility in Claverack. The second will address the possibility of accepting proposals from potential outside buyers for the home. The statement reflected a change in Grattan's previous position on the county's ownership of the 120-bed nursing home. He said it has become clear the county can no longer afford to own a public nursing facility. According to data released, the county subsidy of the home will cost more than $330,000 per month in 2014, or total nearly $4 million for the year. In addition to the projected increased expenses, Grattan said, it seems unlikely the county will receive full payment of the $4 million in loans made to the home in 2012 and 2013. If the full board ultimately chooses to sell the facility, Grattan said, the successful buyer will be required to commit to keeping a nursing home in Philmont. Kyle Adams is reporting in The Daily Mail a local man is being credited with saving a life after he rescued a drowning teen from the Kaaterskill Creek in Palenville. According to the state police, a 17-year-old from Catskill was swimming in the Kaaterskill Creek with two friends Sun., May 11, when he was pulled into deeper water by the current. The teen became submerged and was unable to swim to shore. Richard Larsen, of Palenville, ran to the area after hearing people yell for help. He swam to the teen and was able to pull him to safety. The victim was transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital for treatment. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

The Daily Freeman is reporting Columbia-Greene Community College will offer more than 24 online and hybrid summer courses beginning May 19. Online courses provide a student the opportunity to study from anywhere, at anytime. Hybrid courses combine online and classroom work. Classes offered include: Computer Applications, Foundations of Business, Career Planning, Introduction to Sociology, and Europe in the 20th Century. The first session runs May 19 to June 26. The Associated Press reported New York officials have identified 51 bridges statewide most at risk from repeated flooding, saying they require upgrades and retrofits estimated to cost more than $257 million. The list includes two bridges located on Route 23 in Prattsville, which reportedly need nearly $23 million in repairs and upgrades. The bridges have been scoured and lost foundation materials like sand and rocks from around and beneath abutments, piers, foundations and embankments. An estimated $193 million will be paid by the Federal Emergency Management Agency if all 51 bridges identified are approved for grants. State officials say the bridges were built to the codes and standards of their time, remain safe and open for everyday traffic, but are now vulnerable to scour from more intense and frequent weather events.

Katie Kocijanski reported in the Chatham Courier the Austerlitz Volunteer Fire Company has kicked off a fundraising campaign for a new firehouse. The company has been housed for more than 60 years at West Hill Road and Route 22. Company President David Savage said the building no longer meets the department's needs. Flooding has been an ongoing problem and the modern trucks cannot fit into the bay. The new 3,700-square-foot building will be located on a site directly adjacent to the company's current location. It is expected to cost $800,000; more than half that amount has been raised so far. The company hopes to begin construction by spring 2015.

Brian Nearing reported in the Times Union the Greene County Industrial Development Agency is considering a proposal to construct a 73-unit, mixed senior and affordable housing project at the site of a former metal casting company. At issue is the 16-acre former American Valve Manufacturing Corp. site on Mansion Street in Coxsackie. The company closed some three decades ago and later was partially cleaned of toxic pollution. Rene VanSchaack, county IDA executive director, said the agency is working with Westchester County developer Kenneth Kearney. Some in the village have expressed concern over potential exposure to pollution that might be caused by disturbing the site. VanSchaack said there is no risk because the landfill and its buried contents would not be disturbed, and the property is safe to build on. He said a $12 million, DEC-funded cleanup brought the property into compliance with state standards for reuse for residential purposes.

Photonics Media reported Bard College won a three-year, $500,000 Scientific Equipment Program grant from the Sherman Fairchild Foundation for the creation of a new microscopy suite to enhance the college's undergraduate science programs. The funding will allow for four lasers, two optical microscopes and two scanning probe microscopes. The new suite will be located in the Gabrielle H. Reem and Herbert J. Kayden Center for Science and Computation. This new equipment will add to the college’s recent purchase of a scanning electron microscope.

New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, signed on with eight other Democrats and Independent Bernie Sanders to a letter to Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler, calling for the FCC to protect net neutrality. Recently, Wheeler and the FCC proposed changes that internet activists say will allow companies with big money to control who gets to use what speed on the internet. The FCC is scheduled to vote on the proposed rules on May 15, although two commissioners have asked to delay the vote.

Emilia Teasdale in The Columbia Paper reports that the Ichadbod Crane Central School District spent $1.2 million upgrading technology, including new network servers, fiber cable, wireless access throughout the district’s buildings, and new computers, including iPads for many teachers and administrators. Thirty-nine percent say they use the iPads regularly for teaching, a survey showed, at the board's May 6 meeting. Others, though, said the district's network was not reliable, making them expensive doorstops. School Superintendent George Zini said high school students would get iPads for school work in the 2015-16 school year and middle school students in 2016-17. Michael Ryan is reporting in The Daily Mail the Windham Town Board voted Thurs., May 8, to move the office of the town supervisor to a different location within town hall. Town Supervisor Stacy Post was the lone dissenting vote on the resolution. The office will now be located on the second floor of the town building. The board decision was made in the wake of Post's decision to change the locks on the downstairs office without board approval. Traditionally, the downstairs office was available for use by other elected officials and town staff. Post's decision to lock off the area prevented the town clerk from accessing the fax and copy machine area and public records. State police investigators raided Post's home and seized a computer from her town hall office in March. No charges have been filed. The investigation was handed over to the office of Columbia County District Attorney Paul Czajka (CHIA-kah) in April. Post took office in January. She previously served as the town's police chief. Joe Gentile is reporting in the Register Star the Claverack Town Board followed the village of Philmont Thurs., May 8, and approved a resolution in opposition to the privatization of the county-owned Pine Haven Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center. The resolution called for keeping Pine Haven located at its current Philmont location. The board also expressed the expectation that the Columbia County Board of Supervisors will undertake a thorough review and study of the situation before any decisions on the fate of Pine Haven are made. The Philmont Village Board adopted a similar resolution last month. Members of the Board of Supervisors Pine Haven Subcommittee voted last month to cancel construction on the center, and to begin soliciting bids from interested buyers. The subcommittee’s recommendations are scheduled to be heard by the Health and Medical Services Committee on May 20, before the matter moves on for a vote by the full board on June 11.
