Scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected to develop late Tuesday morning and persist into the evening. Any thunderstorms will be capable of producing locally heavy downpours and gusty winds. Thunderstorms are expected to move toward the east or or northeast at 10 to 20 mph. The locally heavy downpours will likely lead to ponding of water in low-lying, poor drainage and urban areas.

Rick Karlin reported at Capitol Confidential Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo retained his place on the Working Families Party ballot following a vote held late Sat., May 31. Cuomo held off a last-minute challenge by Fordham law professor Zephyr Teachout. Teachout urged convention participants to come together after the convention and present a united Democratic and Working Families front.

In other political news, Jordan Carleo-Evangelist and Dennis Yusko reported in the Times Union Democrats are backing a retired school administrator in a bid to oust state Sen. Kathy Marchione of Halfmoon. Brian Howard won the backing of Democrats in Saratoga and Rensselaer County last week. He is expected to land the formal support of Columbia County Democrats, as well. Howard served for six years as superintendent in Queensbury until retiring in 2008 and taking temporary jobs in Berlin and Troy.

And William J. Kemble reported in the Daily Freeman State Sen. Cecilia Tkaczyk Sat., May 31, kicked off her re-election campaign Kingston. The Duanesurg Democrat pointed to her understanding of education as one of the key ways she differs from her opponent, Republican George Amedore. Tkaczyk also said she expects the New York SAFE Act gun control law, which was adopted the year before she took office, will come up during the campaign. In a statement released Saturday, Tkaczyk acknowledged re-election may prove to be a tough fight, alleging Amedore has spread lies and half-truths about her record since she was first elected.

Debby Mayer reported in the Columbia Paper the Health and Medical Service Committee of the Columbia County Board of Supervisors voted Thurs., May 29, to authorize the board to issue a request for proposals for the sale of the Pine Haven Nursing Facility and Rehabilitation Center. The RFP is to be written to require a private operator to keep Pine Haven in Claverack, preserving a maximum number of current jobs in the nursing home located in the village of Philmont. Two hundred people currently work for Pine Haven, either full- or part-time. The resolution will go before the full board, Wed., June 11.

Arthur Cusano reported in The Daily Mail the Columbia-Greene Humane Society celebrated the grand opening of its new facility in Greenport, Sat., May 31. The new facility will accommodate longer stays, with larger indoor and outdoor cat rooms and dog kennels, and outdoor play areas, as well. The new $2 million facility sits just a few feet from the former facility located at 125 Humane Society Road, and was paid for through donations. Erika Eklund reports in The Mountain Eagle that Delaware County officials have plans for an upgraded emergency communication system, with lease agreements approved for tower sites in towns of Hancock and Roxbury, and negative State Environmental Quality Review (SEQR) declarations for proposed tower sites in the hamlet of Grand Gorge and town of Middletown. “We are moving along with these,” board chairman Jim Eisel said at a recent county meeting. “We need to get the system up and running and acquiring all the land with these lease agreements is what we need to do.” Read the full story in The Mountain Eagle.

Reportedly, this includes Cuomo creating a $10 million campaign fund to be used to flip the state Senate into Democratic hands. Currently, Cuomo has quietly backed five rogue Democratic state senators, the Independent Democratic Conference, who are siding with Republicans. Other reports indicate Cuomo will now back a $10.10 mininimum wage, and give more robust support to the DREAM Act. Read the full story in Capital New York.

[caption width="464" align="alignnone"] A new AM radio antenna is mounted on Max Goldfarb's M49 radio truck at Wave Farm.[/caption]A new AM radio transmitter was installed at Wave Farm by Dan Braverman of Radio Systems on May 19, with Wave Farm Radio debuting on 1620-AM. The AM transmissions can only be heard at Wave Farm, as these are unlicensed broadcasts under Part 15.219 of the FCC rules. Wave Farm Radio will broadcast radio art and other "transmission art," as well as experimental music, creative composition, free jazz, noise and other fringe styles. It will also feature field recordings, and live open microphones from the fields, forests, streams, and ponds at Wave Farm. A little more installation work needs to be complete before full-time broadcasts begin, but a test AM transmission will be included on "Saturday Morning Serial" May 31 on WGXC.

Joe Gentile is reporting in the Register Star after nearly a month, results from 875 Columbia County locations have been received to the broadband accessibility survey being conducted by Columbia County Board of Supervisors in partnership with U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson. Ken Flood, Columbia County’s planning and economic development commissioner briefed the board's Economic Development Committee on the results, Tues., May 27. More than one-third of those surveyed came from home-based businesses with fewer than 50 commercial responses. Users reported accessing the Internet for a variety of tasks, from school assignments to self-employment and entertainment purposes. The majority of those responding reported having dial-up service. Michael Ryan is reporting in The Daily Mail the Greene County Republican Committee has endorsed Athens resident Joseph Stanzione for district attorney. Stanzione was chosen during the GOP caucus held Thurs., May 29, at the county courthouse in Catskill. Stanzione was chosen over acting District Attorney Charles Bucca. Stanzione has been in private practice for 30 years, and has served for 26 years as an assistant public defender. The committee also endorsed incumbents Chris Gibson for Congress, Pete Lopez for state Assembly, Peter Markou for county treasurer, and Hassan Basagic and John Gulino for county coroner. The caucus also backed George Amedore, who is challenging incumbent Cecilia Tkaczyk for state Senate. Ken Lovett is reporting at Daily Politics the Working Families Party is considering education activist Diane Ravitch as its gubernatorial candidate should the party decide to withhold its backing of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo. The party has spoken to Ravitch and she has expressed interest, a source told Lovett. Whether she is the candidate or not, Ravitch will have a role at the Working Families Party convention Sat., May 31. If she runs, Ravitch's candidacy would put a spotlight on the charter school issue statewide. She stands in strong opposition to them, in sharp contrast with Cuomo. Ravitch is a research professor at New York University. From 1991 to 1993, she served in the administration of Pres. George H.W. Brianna Gurciullo is reporting in the Times Union 12-year-old Lydia Loverin lost her quest to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Thurs., May 29. The Mountain Road School sixth-grader was eliminated during the semifinals when she misspelled the word "velutinous." Lydia earlier won the Capital Region Spelling Bee and was sponsored by the Times Union. She was one of 46 semifinalists who came from a pool of 281 spellers between 8 and 15 years old from around the world. Lydia had never competed in a spelling bee until this academic year. A bill (A.8744) passed the New York Assembly unanimously recently, and now heads to the State Senate (S.7018), that bans the sale in New York of products with “micro beads,” tiny synthetic particles that are used as abrasive scouring agents. Fish and other animals ingest the tiny particles that do not degrade as quickly as the natural materials that larger companies are now using instead of micro beads. Jim Planck is reporting in The Daily Mail an alleged fraud has cast a pall on the recent Catskill Central Board of Education election. Failed board candidate Michael J. Lanuto Jr. expressed concerns about the legitimacy of the reported outcome after learning a person allegedly impersonated a registered voter and successfully cast a ballot as part of the annual board election and budget vote, May 20. Benjamen Hodzic of Catskill, was arrested and charged with forgery and criminal impersonation the day following the vote. On his Facebook page, Lanuto said that while an arrest has been made, the integrity of the voting system has been tarnished. Catskill Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Farrell told the paper the district reported the matter to village police immediately. She said to the best of her knowledge this was an isolated incident and the results, as tabulated, still stand. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

Kyle Adams is reporting in The Daily Mail the Greene County Democratic Committee has endorsed incumbent state Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk (KAT-chik) of Duanesburg, to represent the 46th Senate District, as well as Paul Salvino for Greene County District Attorney. Tkaczyk is being challenged by Republican George Amedore of Rotterdam. The first-term senator is the ranking member of the senate Election Committee and Committee on Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, as well as a member of the Agriculture, Environmental Conservation, Education, Children and Families, and Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs committees. Salvino, a resident of Athens, recently retired from a 32-year career with the New York State Police. He received his law degree from Albany Law School and served in the Office of Legal Counsel for the New York State Police following a career as a uniformed officer and investigator for the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The Times Union is reporting Lydia Loverin, winner of the Capital Region Spelling Bee, made it to the semifinals of the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Lydia is sponsored by the Times Union. She was among 42 of 281 contestants who made it to the next round. The contest in the Washington, D.C., area continues Thursday morning.

During their time in Greene County, these two accomplished radio producers and artists collected stories and interviews with workers in Greene and Columbia counties regarding their jobs and their relationship to their work. Kyle Adams is reporting in The Daily Mail the end of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s buyout process is approaching for a handful of Greene County homeowners still dealing with the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene. The Greene County Legislature last week awarded a $50,000 demolition contract to Dan’s Hauling and Demo of East Greenbush. The firm will handle the demolition of structures on six flood-prone properties in Catskill and Cairo. FEMA’s buyout program reimburses homeowners the pre-flood value of properties in flood zones, then return the lots to a forever wild state under municipal ownership. The Greene County Soil and Water Conservation District has been guiding Greene County property owners through the process. Under the program, the town and county are responsible for demolishing any standing structures on the buyout properties within 90 days of closing. The parcels can be left vacant or turned into parks with low-impact structures like benches or open gazebos. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

Emilia Teasdale is reporting in the Columbia Paper five months since being notified, Chatham residents still know very little about plans for a new gas pipeline through the northern part of town. At a recent town board meeting, member Bob Balcom asked town Supervisor Jesse DeGroodt if any updates on the project were available. DeGroodt said he has not heard from the company since the January letter, but did say the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company has "nothing to say yet except that they are working through their permits." In January, board members received letters from Tennessee Gas, a Kinder Morgan company, about the project. The Jan. 9 letter said the company would be contacting landowners in the coming weeks, and would hold outreach meetings. No company outreach has been reported to date. Tennessee Gas already operates a gas pipeline through parts of Columbia County and a compressor station on state Route 66 at the north end of Chatham near the Rensselaer County line.
