Aaron Blake, Darla Cameron, and Kennedy Elliott in The Washington Post count the votes in Congress, for or against military action in Syria, and Kinderhook-based Congressman Chris Gibson is the only representative of WGXC-area residents with an opinion so far. "I urge a 'no' vote on authorization to use military force," they quote the Republican. Gibson, a former Army Colonel, told the Kingston Times on Sept. 1 that, “I will be going to more briefings when I go down to Washington and I look forward to that, but again, my views on this issue are fully thought through, in terms of my experience and my belief that striking Syria will not make things better — it will make them worse." New York Senators Kirstin Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer are counted as undecided as of Sept. 6. President Barack Obama is asking Congress for authorization to bomb Syria after the regime killed many Syrians with chemical weapons recently. Stephen Vitiello is a visual and sound artist, currently included in the "Soundings" sound art show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Originally a punk guitarist he is influenced by video artist Nam June Paik who he worked with after meeting in 1991. He has collaborated with Pauline Oliveros, Scanner aka Robin Rimbaud, and Frances-Marie Uitti as well as visual artists Julie Mehretu, Tony Oursler and Joan Jonas. Vitiello was a resident artist at the World Trade Center in 1999 where he recorded sounds from the 91st floor using home-built contact microphones, as well as photocells and used that material in his Bright and Dusty Things album (New Albion Records) as well as in an installation environment, World Trade Center Recordings: Winds After Hurricane Floyd. Vitiello has had solo exhibitions of sound installations, photographs and drawings at museums and galleries including The Project, NY, Museum 52, Los Angeles and Galerie Almine Rech, Paris. Group exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial, the 2006 Sydney Biennale and Ce qui arrive (Unknown Quantity) curated by Paul Virilio at the Cartier Foundation, Paris. CD releases include The Sound of Red Earth (Kaldor Public Art Projects), Box Music with Machinefabriek (12k), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub Rosa) and Buffalo Bass Delay (Hallwalls). Vitiello is currently an associate professor in the Kinetic Imaging department at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Jessica Mosier is reporting in The Daily Mail more than two dozen people attended the Cairo Democratic caucus at the Acra Community Center Wed., Sept. 4. The caucus chose incumbent Ted Banta as its candidate for town supervisor. Banta may run unopposed in November; the Cairo GOP has so far failed to endorsed a candidate in that race. The caucus also chose Michael Murphy to run for Cairo Town Board. Murphy is a graduate of Catskill High School and has lived in Cairo for 20 years. He is a military veteran and a truck driver by profession. Murphy will square off against Republicans Doug Ostrander and Mary-Jo Cords in the general election. Republican incumbent Susan Hilgendorff was endorsed for tax collector. The caucus did not nominate a candidate for town justice, so GOP incumbent Leland Miller will now run unopposed on Nov. 5. Arthur Cusano is reporting in the Register Star Scenic Hudson has acquired 173 acres in Greenport near the Hudson River. The acquired property includes a 65-acre area of tidal and freshwater wetlands and more than a mile of land along the main channel of South Bay Creek that flows into the Hudson River through the South Bay in Hudson. Much of the land can be seen from the historic Olana State Historic Site. The property was acquired from a Long-Island based land owner. The newly acquired land is just east of a parcel in the South Bay Watershed already protected by Scenic Hudson and is adjacent to the recently state-designated South Bay Creek and Marsh Significant Coastal Fish and Wildlife Habitat off the shore of Greenport and Hudson. A spokesman said Scenic Hudson hoped to see acquired lands connect Hudson, Greenport, Olana and eventually the Village of Catskill across the Hudson River by trails. William J. Kemble is reporting in the Daily Freeman the Catskill Town Board has agreed to seek bids for tearing down a fire-damaged house at 71 Creek Road. The board approved the demolition during a meeting Tues., Sept. 3. Town Code Enforcement Officer John Cashin said the property has become a nuisance. Cashin said the owner of the house, Richard Rothe, of Saugerties, put a chain across the driveway but has not placed boards on the doors or open areas of walls. The cost of the demolition will be put on Rothe’s property tax bill unless he takes action sooner to have the building razed. Rothe said he plans to contact an attorney to stop the demolition. Kyle Adams is reporting in The Daily Mail Greene County is moving forward with a $300,000 improvement plan for the Greene County Mental Health building located in Cairo. Approximately $100,000 in upgrades to the building’s safety and security infrastructure were approved by the Public Safety Committee of the Greene County Legislature Wed., Sept. 4. The building dates to the 1880s and currently houses the offices of Greene County Mental Health and its outpatient treatment center, the Greene County Soil & Water Conservation District and the Greene County Child Advocacy Center. The funds approved by the Public Safety Committee would be allocated for metal detectors, a telephone system upgrade, the redesign of the front door and entry and additional part-time security personnel. An added $200,000 in improvements will go before the committee in a separate resolution next week. NOTE: Public Safety Committee Chairman William Lawrence is a WGXC programmer. Nathan Mayberg is reporting in the Register Star one of the largest trees in Columbia County is heading for the sawmill. The diseased oak is approximately 200 years old and measures 58 inches in diameter. It is located on Route 217 in Claverack and is scheduled to be removed by the state Department of Transportation. The tree, which sits very near the edge of the road, has been trimmed several times out of safety concerns. Melissa Slater, an assistant to the regional director of the DOT’s Region 8 office, said the department has not yet determined precisely when the tree will be taken down. The department is arranging a way to cut off a healthy part of the tree for the town to make into a bench. Read the full story in the Register Star.

William J. Kemble is reporting in the Daily Freeman the Catskill Town Board has agreed to waive fees for use of the Washington Irving Senior Center by not-for-profit groups that provide community benefits. The policy was revised during a meeting Wed., Sept. 4, after a local Cub Scout leader reported costs to use the facility would impact the budgets of youth groups. Officials have not set a fee schedule for the building on Thompson Street, but have advised groups they could be charged for the cost of employees to be on site during events. Town and village officials opened the senior center in 2005, after receiving state grant funding. Initially the facility was used for Village Board meetings, but officials were told that grant restrictions prohibited governmental sessions on the property. Nathan Mayberg is reporting in the Register Star health insurance for Columbia County employees will increase more than five percent, based on a new agreement approved by the Insurance and Finance committees of the Columbia County Board of Supervisors. The county’s new $8.5 million health insurance plan, through MVP, will cost about $450,000 more than the previous agreement. The agreement could be the last before the county moves forward with a self-insurance plan. Self-insurance coverage could save the county up to $1 million. William J. Kemble is reporting in the Daily Freeman the members of the Catskill Town Board have agreed to seek bids to clean up the former Friar Tuck resort in Kiskatom. The measure was approved following a public hearing that drew no comments. Town Code Enforcement Officer John Cashin said the violations by property owner L&H Resort Systems include failing to remove items taken from rooms following flooding from Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011. Jimmy Vielkind reports at Capitol Confidential Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed a bill Tues., Sept. 3, to allow the Columbia-Greene Partnership Academy to open this week. The legislation was sent to the governor on Friday. 12 a.m. (midnight): Radio News: DEA's Hemisphere Surveillance From "Free Speech Radio News": Privacy advocates are raising concerns after Obama Administration officials confirmed a massive surveillance program run by the Drug Enforcement Agency, or DEA, in coordination with AT&T. The program is called Hemisphere and funded by the Office of National Drug Control Policy. It began in 2007 and tracks extensive personal cell phone data, including the location of the caller, according to copies of an internal presentation obtained by an activist in Washington through public information requests and published by the New York Times. Under the program, local and federal law enforcement agencies have access to more than 25 years of personal cell phone information. For more, we’re joined by Hanni Fakhoury, staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Kyle Adams is reporting in The Daily Mail approximately 30 members of the Cairo and Durham communities met recently with Assembly member Pete Lopez at the Cairo Public Library. The subject of the meeting was the Cairo-Durham Central School District's elementary grade-level realignment plan. The controversial plan will take effect with the first day of school, Thurs., Sept. 5. Lopez told the group his intention was to hear residents' concerns and "see where I can be of assistance." Among the issues raised at the meeting: The school board is unresponsive to the community, the plan will involve complicated and long bus routes, there are few or no educational benefits, and it does not save as much money as closing the Durham building and moving all the elementary students to the Cairo building. Through two hours of discussion, it was noted the only solution to the problem will come from the board of education. Lopez said repeatedly, while providing support and answers, he has no authority over the school. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

Parry Teasdale reported in the Columbia Paper Columbia County District Attorney Paul Czajka (CHAI-kah) is recovering from heart surgery. Czajka went under the knife August 16, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany to replace a heart valve and repair an aortic aneurism. In his absence, the DA's office is being managed by long-time Assistant District Attorney David Costanzo. The DA lost vision in one eye. The loss is permanent and Czajka will now wear a patch over that eye; his other eye was not affected. He expects to return to the office "in a relatively short time." John Mason reports in the Register Star the winners of the Fourth Annual Victoria A. Simons (SIGH-mons) Locavore Award were announced Mon., Sept. 2, on the closing day of the Columbia County Fair. Winners Staron’s Farm and Market, run by Stanley and Donna Staron, the Hawthorne Valley Association in Harlemville and Josie Proul, chef and new owner of Local 111 in Philmont each received an engraved award and a cash prize of $1,000. The awards recognize notable achievement in bringing together local farmers and consumers in support of locally grown products. The awards are named in honor of the late Vicki Simons, longtime editor of The Independent newspaper, member of the Columbia County Agricultural Society Board of Directors and executive director of Columbia County Bounty. The Albany Turnpike Bridge in East Chatham will be closed on Sept. 3 to replace the brigde over the CSX railroad lines. "A detour permit has been issued by NYS DOT, please follow signs for alternate routes," according to the Town of Chatham's website. The website says the detour will last through November.

Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail the town of Hunter celebrated 200 years of incorporation Sat., Aug. 31, with a long parade of civic, community, police and fire departments, business and youth groups. The town of Hunter, which contains the villages of Hunter and Tannersville as well as the hamlets of Lanesville, Elka Park, Platte Clove, Edgewood and Haines Falls, was formed on Jan. 27, 1813. Hundreds lined the streets and packed the restaurants for Saturday’s parade. U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson, State Assemblyman Pete Lopez and State Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk (KAT-chik) all presented the town with citations. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

None of their answers were edited (except in 2 cases to remove identifying info for anonymity and in one instance by request). All answers are heard here in the order they were recorded. FSRN’s Alice Ollstein takes us to a farm called Three Part Harmony, where we explore what urban, organic agriculture could do both for a community and the environment they live in, and how US policy could better support it. Photo from Scenic Hudson website.[/caption]Scenic Hudson announced Thu., Aug. 29, the conservation group has acquired 173 acres in Greenport that impact the local public water supply. The property features forests, clay bluffs, a 65-acre complex of tidal and freshwater wetlands, and over a mile of frontage along the main channel of South Bay Creek. That creek flows into the Hudson River through South Bay in the City of Hudson. The land purifies and replenishes the aquifer for Greenport's drinking water, with those wellheads located on adjacent property. A portion of the property also is visible from Olana State Historic Site, whose vistas, according to Scenic Hudson, "contribute significantly to its popularity as one of the region’s top tourism destinations, attracting more than 170,000 visitors annually and generating nearly $8 million of economic stimulus each year in surrounding communities. Since 1992 Scenic Hudson and its conservation partners have protected more than 2,400 acres visible from Olana." (WGXC is organizing a fundraiser with Olana in September.) The newly acquired land is just east of 148 Scenic Hudson-protected acres in the South Bay watershed, and next to the state-designated South Bay Creek and Marsh Significant Coastal Fish and Wildlife Habitat. Scenic Hudson says it plans to conduct outreach with local residents and community leaders to learn more about how people would like to see these lands managed. They say one possible idea is to link trails along a larger “cultural and conservation corridor” between the City of Hudson, South Bay Creek, Olana, the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, the Village of Catskill and RamsHorn-Livingston Sanctuary.
