He received a degree in Music Education from Tennessee State University and performed with Gladys Knight & the Pips, among others, in the R&B genre. He also toured in Detroit. John Mason is reporting in the Register Star at the top of Hudson Mayor William H. Hallenbeck Jr.'s list of priorities for the coming year is attracting future development to the city. Hallenbeck said, “I think our waterfront is paramount to what we have going in the city of Hudson. A lot of our considerations for business are small business, which is fantastic, people becoming entrepreneurs. But we have to look at what the waterfront has to offer: I’d like to see eventually a substantial hotel [there]." Other items on the mayor's wish list include completion of the police-court complex, a conclusion to the Furgary story, a resolution of the truck route dilemma and instituting public transportation from Hudson to Columbia-Greene Community College. Hallenbeck will talk city issues and more on WGXC's Newline Radio, 9:30 p.m., Fri., Jan. 31.

Ariel Zangla is reporting in the Daily Freeman the Greene County task force assigned to explore the establishment of a county-wide ambulance service plans three meetings to receive input from emergency medical service providers, elected officials and the public. Co-Chairman Mark Evans said Wed., Jan. 29, the meetings would allow members of the task force to ask questions and determine what the public would want included in such a service. The meetings will be held Feb. 17 at the Greene County Emergency Services Building; Feb. 24 at Hunter Town Hall; and, at a location to be determined in Catskill on March 3. The task force has been charged with looking into establishing a county-wide ambulance system that would provide basic and advanced life support services. The Associated Press is reporting the compromise farm bill passed Wed., Jan. 30, by the House sets policy for food stamps and farm programs. The bill would cut food stamps by around $800 million a year and continue generous farm subsidies. Some of what is in the bill:

• Test programs in 10 states that would allow new work requirements for food stamp recipients.


• A prohibition on lottery winners, convicted sex offenders and murderers from receiving food stamps.


• The end of so-called direct payments, government subsidies paid to farmers whether they farm or not.


• Stricter limits on how much money an individual farmer can receive.


• A new dairy program that would do away with current price supports and allow farmers to purchase a new kind of insurance that pays out when the gap between the price they receive for milk and their feed costs narrows.

In a statement released to his constituents following passage, U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson called the bill good for New York and good for the country. He said the bill represents a significant victory for local farmers, ensuring they have the ability to sustain and grown their operations. The Daily Freeman is reporting unemployment rates in all local counties were lower in December than in November, the state Department of Labor reported Tues., Jan. 28. The December 2013 jobless rates also were lower than the December 2012 rates. Greene County unemployment last month was 7 percent, down from 7.3 percent in November and 9.6 percent in December 2012. Columbia County's jobless rate was 5.4 percent, down from 5.5 percent a month earlier and 7.3 percent one year before. Unemployment also declined in Delaware, Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties during the same period. The statewide jobless rate in December was 6.6 percent. Laura Nahmias is reporting at Capital New York insurer EmblemHealth will pay a $100,000 civil penalty and offer reinstated health insurance to more than 8,000 people as part of a settlement with the state’s attorney general. The settlement came following an investigation into the company’s improper termination of thousands of health plans in recent years. More than 3.4 million New York residents have plans through Emblem. A New York state law enacted in 2009 requires insurers to extend health coverage to children of its plan members until they reach age 30, four years longer than the extension of coverage authorized under the federal Affordable Care Act in 2010. The attorney general's investigation showed Emblem failed to follow the state’s law. Read the full story at Capital New York.

Adam Clayton is reporting in the Register Star the state Department of Transportation will replace the superstructure of the Route 66 bridge over Claverack Creek in Greenport. Claverack Supervisor Clifford Weigelt expressed dismay Tues., Jan. 28, after learning the bridge would be closed, limiting access for emergency personnel, as well as county residents. The construction is expected to begin next winter with an expected completion date of spring 2016. The state-funded project is slated to cost $4.5 million. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Julie Pace is reporting for the Associated Press President Barack Obama vowed Tues., Jan. 28, in his State of the Union address to sidestep Congress "whenever and wherever" necessary to narrow economic disparities between America's rich and poor. He unveiled an array of modest executive actions to increase the minimum wage for federal contract workers and make it easier for millions of low-income people to save for retirement. Obama pressed Congress to revive a stalled immigration overhaul, pass an across-the-board increase in the federal minimum wage and expand access to early childhood education. John Mason is reporting in the Register Star the Galvan Initiatives Foundation is buying the Promenade Hill Center Day Habilitation facility, located on lower Warren Street in Hudson. Galvan Board President T. Eric Galloway confirmed the foundation is under contract to buy the property, Mon., Jan. 27. Galloway told the paper Galvan does not have a specific plan for the parcel, but "it is unlikely that we will keep the structure as it is in the long run." The 22,000-square-foot building was built in 1975. The space has been used by Coarc to provide daily programs for developmentally disabled adults since the early 1980s. Those clients will now be served at Coarc's other day habilitation pograms. The sale is expected to be finalized by Sept. 15. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Kyle Adams is reporting in The Daily Mail the Catskill Democratic Committee Mon., Jan. 27, nominated its candidates for two open village positions in March 8 elections. Incumbent Village Trustee Joseph Kozloski was nominated to run for a fourth term on the village board. Lillian Johnson was nominated to run for village justice. Kozloski has been a trustee for nine years and was elected to represent Catskill in the Greene County Legislature last year. He will be opposed by Republican nominee Rick Paolino. Lillian Johnson is the owner of Imagine That! pottery studio and a longtime resident of the village. She ran for village trustee in the last election. Mike Goodwin is reporting in the Times Union Pete Seeger, the banjo-picking troubadour who sang for migrant workers, college students and star-struck presidents in a career that introduced generations of Americans to their folk music heritage died Mon., Jan. 27, at the age of 94. Seeger’s grandson said his grandfather died peacefully in his sleep around 9:30 p.m. at New York Presbyterian Hospital, where he had been for six days. Family members were with him. Seeger's musical career was always intertwined with his political activism, in which he advocated for causes ranging from civil rights to the cleanup of his beloved Hudson River. In 2011, a month before his 92nd birthday, Seeger spoke with WGXC volunteer Tanya Blue about community radio and offered some thoughts about the future PLAY (1:12). Some of the stories that made the news Jan. 24 to Jan. 27:

Cairo-Durham Central School District Superintendent Mary Fassett addressed the public at a meeting of the full Board of Education, Thurs., Jan. 23 on the subject of the district's Facilities Usage Survey. Fassett said the focus of the survey is still in process and promised the process will be lawful and transparent. She made no reference to the possible closure of the former Durham Elementary School. Rumors have circulated in the past weeks that plans are underway to close the school after portions of a December 2013 report were posted on Facebook. During her remarks Thursday night, Fassett acknowledged the presence of Town Supervisor William A. Carr at the meeting. At a Durham Town Board meeting earlier in the week, Carr expressed concerns about the impact the school closure would have on the town. James Odato reported at Capitol Confidential state senators Liz Krueger and Cecilia Tkaczyk Thurs., Jan. 23, introduced legislation that would require communities to approve of a casino in their midst. The bill provides for home-rule rights of municipalities and goes beyond requirements negotiated last year between Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and the Legislature. The bill would require that local support for the siting of a casino in a specific municipality be demonstrated through the passage of a local law or resolution in support of the siting.

Joe Gentile reported in the Register Star the $9 million renovation of the Columbia County Courthouse is near completion. Construction on the courthouse's interior is expected to be finished by March 31. The weather has delayed exterior improvements, such as landscaping until April or May, according to Public Works Commissioner David Robinson. Hard construction costs now stand at nearly $8.2 million. Robinson said overall the projects is $50,000 under budget at present.

Rick Karlin reported in the Times Union state Education Commissioner John B. King Jr. was called before the Senate Education Committee, Thurs., Jan. 23, over the rollout of Common Core standardized tests. Committee members told King if he did not slow or delay implementation of some of the testing lawmakers may have to come up with a legislative solution. King said he will try to respond to the concerns, but said he does not want to abandon the program. He said the exams provide valuable input into how teachers and students perform, and in some cases they are federally mandated.

Kyle Adams is reporting in The Daily Mail the Heart of Catskill Association’s eighth annual “Cat’n Around Catskill” kicked off Sun., Jan. 26, with its artist and sponsor reception at the Washington Irving Senior Center in Catskill. The walls of the senior center were covered with 84 original designs for the fiberglass cat statues that will go out on the streets on Memorial Day, and eventually be sold at a fundraising auction the last weekend in September. Sponsors have until Feb. 15 to pick a cat.

Many Hudson Valley communities are faced with the expansion of high-power transmission lines.

Scott Waldman at Capital New York reports that the state has indefinitely extended a Feb. 21 deadline for comments on a $600 million plan for a major upgrade to transmission lines from upstate through the Hudson Valley to provide more electricity for New York City. Governor Andrew Cuomo calls the proposals the blueprint for the "New York State Energy Highway. Sen. Terry Gipson of Poughkeepsie and others prefer a costlier option of burying the infrastructure improvement. “It's definitely a victory, it's certainly not complete,” he told Waldman. “They're looking more seriously at putting this underground.” Gipson is also advocating the lines follow existing routes. Currently, some of the proposed power lines would expand the existing footprint by up to 160 feet, and eminent domain and aesthetic conerns, along with environmental issues, are causing community groups in towns throughout the Hudson Valley to form in opposition to the expansion of the transmission lines. In Churchtown Sat., Jan. 25, Farmers and Families for Claverack and Livingston, a group opposed to the project in its present form, hosted a meeting with many local officials, including State Senator Kathleen Marchione and Assemblywoman Didi Barrett. Throughout the Hudson Valley, more groups such as this are forming to address the issue. This Thursday, Jan. 30 at 5:30 p.m. at Clinton Town Hall at 1215 Centre Road is the next community forum on the issue. Adam Clayton in the Register-Star reports that locally, the Columbia County Board of Supervisors and the towns of Claverack, Stuyvesant, Stockport, and Livingston have all passed resolutions against the current plans for upgrades in Columbia County. The line also passes through parts of Greene, Albany, and Dutchess counties, and crosses the Hudson River locally. Pam Kline, who is the head of Farmers and Families for Livingston, says the local groups have more power banding together, and have formed a coalition with Scenic Hudson, the town of Clinton, Clinton Concerned Citizens, Dutchess County, Dutchess Land Conservancy, the town of Milan, the Olana Partnership, Omega Institute, the Preservation League of New York State, the town of Pleasant Valley and Winnakee Land Trust, and others. “The PSC has not to-date – either in its Energy Highway Blueprint or in any public setting – articulated a convincing need for the new transmission capacity based on the most current data about electricity supply and demand. The potential for energy conservation, demand-side management, local green power generation and distributed generation to reduce the need for new transmission lines has not been examined,” the group wrote in a letter to local and state officials.

The second so-called "Arctic Vortex" has descended on the Eastern United States, bringing bitter cold temperatures to the mountain ski resorts. Saturday, the National Weather Services predicts a warm-up to the upper 20s, with snow predicted. At Catamount Ski in Hillsdale, 19 of 34 trails and four of six lifts are running over 18-36" of snow. At Windham Mountain, there are 23 groomed trails open, with six lifts running over 10-60" of snow. Hunter Mountain has 42 trails open, with six lifts running over 14-62" of snow. Radia show 460: "Hotel Europa" from Kanal103 (Skopje, MK). "Radia" is an international network of stations, including Wave Farm's WGXC, interested in new and forgotten ways of making radio. Each week, one station makes a show for all the others. This week: "Evropa (Europe) was the main hotel in Oteshevo tourist complex, built around 90s at the end of the socialist era. Rated 5 stars, it was one of the most luxurious hotels in former Yugoslavia and was promising that this region will continue to attract tourists from all over the world. Sadly after just couple of years the circumstances (crushing of the socialist system, corrupted privatization process…) led to closure of the entire complex and today it is just a ghost town. This place brings old memories to lots of people who remember the time when Oteshevo was a big tourist attraction. A sound recordist, a singer and a photographer gathered and entered this haunted building with an intention. They were capturing photographs and the sound of the space and the surrounding. Did recordings of the beautiful voice of Genoveva singing, catching the natural reverb of the large halls, but also the sound of the huge broken windows scattered around the floors. This is a picture of the atmosphere of that abandoned hotel, corresponding with the current atmosphere of the land with the same name. Close your eyes and try to feel the energy of the environment and the crush of the civilization of the new era."
