Kemble is reporting in the Daily Freeman the Catskill Town Board has given the Greene County Emergency Medical System the option of moving into the Catskill Rescue Squad building under a deal that could reduce the town’s cost for paramedic coverage. At a town board meeting Tues., Feb. 4, town ambulance administrator George June said the paramedic service pays about $3,000 per month in rent that could be waived if it shared space with the town. The Catskill Town Board has been considering whether to seek paramedic certification for the Catskill Rescue Squad, troubled by rising costs for Greene County Emergency Medical System coverage. Jordan Carleo-Evangelist is reporting at Capitol Confidential state Senate Democrats are backing legislation to accelerate the state minimum wage hike to $9 by a year, or failing that, free cities and towns to raise the minimum pay rate within their own borders. The local control provision would allow local governments to raise the minimum wage as they see fit to counteract varying economic conditions and costs of living across the state. The Democrats’ proposal comes as President Barack Obama is pushing Congress to hike the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 by 2016. New York’s minimum wage increased to $8 on Jan. 1 of this year. A Senate GOP spokesman said Republicans remain focused on policies "that create new, good-paying jobs and reduce the high cost of doing business in New York." John Mason is reporting in the Register Star some Hudson Police Department costs dropped dramatically in 2013, compared to the previous two years. Overtime dropped by more than 11 percent. Other decreases include gasoline usage and vehicle maintenance. In addition, crime and calls for service were the lowest of the last three years in nine out of 14 categories. The number of hit-and-run, assault, domestic dispute, harassment and noise complaint calls in the city all decreased in 2013. Kyle Adams is reporting in The Daily Mail the site plan for the Bridge Street Theater on West Bridge Street in the village of Catskill was approved by the Planning Board Mon., Feb. 3. Co-owners John Sowle and Steven Patterson presented the board with their plan to transform the former Curtron factory building into a performing arts center. They expect construction and renovation to take about six months. The final product will be a 12,000-square-foot performing arts center with a 99-seat theater, a lobby and gallery space, administrative offices, a three-bedroom apartment for out-of-town actors, and a large warehouse for a shop and storage that may later be converted into a larger theater. Rick Karlin is reporting at Capitol Confidential additional federal money is now available for New Yorkers who qualify for heating assistance, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced Mon., Feb. 3. The federal government released additional funding, increasing the state’s total for the current heating season to more than $366 million. Eligible households may receive one regular HEAP benefit per season. They could also be eligible for an emergency benefit if they are in impending danger of running out of fuel or having their utility service shut off. Adam Clayton and John Mason reported in the Register Star Van Kleeck's Tire closed its doors in Hudson on Fri., Jan. 31. Galvan Foundation Board President T. Eric Galloway confirmed the foundation did in fact close on the purchase of Van Kleeck’s properties, located at 724 Columbia St. and 708 State St., Friday. Speaking on WGXC during the Newline Radio show Friday night, Mayor William H. Hallenbeck Jr. commented: PLAY (:34). According to a sign posted on the company's door, the business was shuttered as of 2:45 p.m., that afternoon. The closure will put 20 people out of work. The 54-year-old business will continue to operate out of its original location in Lake Katrine, Ulster Co.

Jim Planck reported in The Daily Mail the Catskill Golf Club is up for sale. The club's stockholders will meet March 2 and vote on a resolution to liquidate and dissolve the club and sell its assets. The assets are proposed to go to Manhattan-based realtor David Vipler and the investor group, Catskill Golf Resort LLC. The club's property, consisting of three parcels totaling 141 acres, will be sold for $800,000, pending stockholder approval.

Arthur Cusano reported in the Register Star warehouse personnel and truck drivers employed by Ginsberg's Foods rejected union representation in a vote held last week, according to company management. A company official said employees voted two to one against the proposal to join Teamsters Local 294 in Albany. Approximately 125 employees were eligible. A Teamster official said in December the vote was initiated by company employees seeking better working conditions.

Jordan Carleo-Evangelist reported at Capitol Confidential Sean Eldridge, U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson’s Democratic challenger in the 19th Congressional District, will report having raised more than $500,000 since October in his year-end filing to the Federal Elections Commission. Eldridge’s fundraising total includes $250,000 in matching contributions of his own money, giving the Ulster County investor more than $1.2 million on hand. Gibson, a two-term incumbent from Kinderhook, will report nearly $900,000 in funds available to his campaign, a spokesman said Thursday.

11 a.m.: The Bedazzled Radio Hour: Steve Marriot, Small Faces Host Spike Priggen will play his favorite Small Faces songs in honor of Steve Marriot's 67th birthday, which was celebrated just last week. The frontman for British hit-makers the Small Faces and Humble Pie, singer/guitarist Marriott was born Jan. 30, 1947 in London. A successful child actor, he played the role of the Artful Dodger in the musical "Oliver!" as a teen, but by the mid-1960s, he was working in a local music shop. There he met bassist Ronnie Lane, and agreed to jam with his band the Pioneers. Marriott soon joined the group full-time and, after adopting a sound influenced by American R&B and a look inspired by the Mod fashion trend, they rechristened themselves the Small Faces. Though best-known in the U.S. for their hit "Itchycoo Park," at home, the Small Faces enjoyed much greater success, reeling off a series of smashes including "All or Nothing," "My Mind's Eye" and "Lazy Sunday," as well as the 1968 classic LP Ogden's Nut Gone Flake. The chart popularity of "Lazy Sunday" rankled Marriot, however. He recorded the song as a joke and it was released despite his objections and when the more thoughtful "The Universal" failed to crack the Top 20, his dissatisfaction only increased. Marriot's tenure with the Small Faces ended after he stalked offstage during the group's New Year's Day performance in 1969. He soon recruited ex-Herd guitarist Peter Frampton to form the hard rock combo Humble Pie.

Dana Rubinstein in Capital New York reports that the Federal Railroad Administration's long-awaited study of high-speed rail in New York was released last week, outlining five options for a faster connection from New York City to Niagara Falls. Three days after he was elected governor in 2010, Gov. Andrew Cuomo wrote a letter to then-U.S. transportation secretary Ray LaHood asking him to give New York State the high-speed rail stimulus monies that other states appeared poised to reject, describing high-speed rail as "critical to building the foundation for future economic growth, especially Upstate." But despite the campaigning on the issue, and early action, Cuomo has done little since, and this study was due last June. Rubinstein reports that a state bill passed in 2010, requires the governor and legislature to appoint a "temporary high-speed rail planning board" within the state transportation department "to advise the Department on the implementation of a high speed rail system for the State." "The high-speed rail planning board has not met under my tenure," said state transportation commissioner Joan McDonald. "I don't believe all of the members have been appointed." The law authorizing its creation has since expired. The study suggests five options for improvements to the now eight-hour trip from New York City to Niagara Falls. The most expensive would cut the time to under six hours. Six public hearings will be held statewide to present the Tier 1 Draft EIS and receive public comments, including a March 4 Albany meeting (see below for complete list).

Hunter Mountain reports it has been so cold recently, they've been able to make snow for nearly two weeks straight. Hunter now has 44 trails open, including Westway, and seven lifts over 36-100" of mostly manufactured snow. Windham Mountain reports 42 trails open, with seven lifts over 10-60" of snow. The Daily Freeman reports that the Bard College Center for Curatorial Studies and the Human Rights Project at Bard will receive a five-year $400,000 Keith Haring Fellowship in Art and Activism, according to a Bard news release. A cross-disciplinary annual visiting fellowship for a scholar, activist, or artist to teach and conduct research at both the Center and the Human Rights Project will be available through the award. The findings will be widely distributed among universities and colleges internationally, and the fellowship recipient will receive $80,000 annually for five years, according to The Daily Freeman. Bard, in Dutchess County, will begin and accepting applications for the fellowship this month, announcing a first fellow in the spring. Tune in for this special broadcast produced from the recordings of Kingston-based composer Pauline Oliveros' Text Scores performed at Framing the Viewshed: Groundswell at the Olana State Historic Site. Oliveros is a pioneering composer, accordionist, sound artist, and founder of The Deep Listening Institute located in Kingston, New York. Her Text Scores are performance pieces that are participatory and interactive. In Rock Piece each participant chooses a pair of resonant rocks to use as percussive instruments, and establishes an independent pulse with the rocks. Environmental Dialogue is a group meditation informed by participants’ awareness of the sounds within a specific environment. Each participant individually and gradually reinforces the pitch of any one environmental sound source, vocally, mentally or with an instrument. In Consideration of the Earth is a composition for solo brass or wind instrument. Participants first listen in all directions, and then turn and play, interacting with sounds perceived or imagined, to the North, East, South, West, and Center. In Sound Piece July 1998 each performer prepares a number of sounds to present within a pre-determined duration. Sounds may come from any sort of sound source, but should have it's own character. The sound may not be identifiable as a fragment or phrase of music. Framing the Viewshed: Groundswell took place on September 22, 2013 and was a co-presentation of The Olana Partnership and Wave Farm's WGXC.

Joe Gentile is reporting in the Register Star consensus in support of shortening the runway at Columbia County Airport by 300 feet was met with applause after the meeting held Thurs., Jan. 30, by the county Board of Supervisors’ Airport Committee at the West Ghent Firehouse. Committee Chairman Art Bassin will recommend the proposal, which could save the county millions overall, to the full board in February. Nearly 70 people attended the meeting that covered ways to bring Columbia County Airport into compliance with the Federal Aviation Administration’s recommendation the northern end the runway have a 1,000-foot safety zone. The recommendation the board ultimately adopts must be reviewed and approved by the Finance Committee before the plan can advance to the full board for a vote. Ariel Zangla is reporting in the Daily Freeman Greene County has again finished a fiscal year with more sales tax revenue than anticipated. The county received $28.6 million in 2013, more than $1.85 million than budgeted. It was the fourth year in a row the revenue exceeded the budgeted amount. County Treasurer Peter Markou attributed the strong results to festivals on the mountaintop, snow that attracted visitors to mountain resorts and vehicle sales. Other counties in New York had what the state Association of Counties described as sluggish sales tax receipts in 2013. The association said the fourth fiscal quarter of 2013 showed a very mixed picture statewide. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.

He was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1944. He was inspired to play the saxophone as child, after watching Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington play music on television. He received a degree in Music Education from Tennessee State University and performed with Gladys Knight & the Pips, among others, in the R&B genre. He also toured in Detroit. Arthur Doyle's name appeared on a Sonic Youth song, "Kim Gordon and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream" (originally titled "Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream") from their album Sonic Nurse. According to Thurston Moore, the song: 'juxtaposes the two extremes of Sonic Youth's eclectic mix of influences. "We could, on the one hand, be interested in a popular figure as ubiquitous as Mariah and on the other hand, we're obviously interested in people [like free-jazz saxophonist Arthur Doyle] that are working on the fringes of the musical world. Ariel Zangla is reporting in the Daily Freeman the Greene County task force assigned to explore the establishment of a county-wide ambulance service plans three meetings to receive input from emergency medical service providers, elected officials and the public. Co-Chairman Mark Evans said Wed., Jan. 29, the meetings would allow members of the task force to ask questions and determine what the public would want included in such a service. The meetings will be held Feb. 17 at the Greene County Emergency Services Building; Feb. 24 at Hunter Town Hall; and, at a location to be determined in Catskill on March 3. The task force has been charged with looking into establishing a county-wide ambulance system that would provide basic and advanced life support services. John Mason is reporting in the Register Star at the top of Hudson Mayor William H. Hallenbeck Jr.'s list of priorities for the coming year is attracting future development to the city. Hallenbeck said, “I think our waterfront is paramount to what we have going in the city of Hudson. A lot of our considerations for business are small business, which is fantastic, people becoming entrepreneurs. But we have to look at what the waterfront has to offer: I’d like to see eventually a substantial hotel [there]." Other items on the mayor's wish list include completion of the police-court complex, a conclusion to the Furgary story, a resolution of the truck route dilemma and instituting public transportation from Hudson to Columbia-Greene Community College.
