Yesterday, the Guardian revealed the identity of the person responsible for leaking documents showing the US government’s massive surveillance of phone and Internet users. Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old employee of the large private, intelligence contractor Booz Allen Hamilton said he sought to prompt a public debate on government surveillance. “I’m no different from anyone else. I don’t have special skills. I’m just another guy who sits there day to day in the office watching what’s happening and goes this is something that’s not our place to decide. The public needs to decide whether these programs and policies are right or wrong and I’m willing to go on the record to defend the authenticity of them and say I didn’t change these, I didn’t modify the story. This is the truth, this is what’s happening, you should decide whether we need to be doing this.” In an interview with the Guardian’s Glenn Greenwald in Hong Kong, Snowden said he had also worked as a Systems Administrator and a Senior Advisor to the CIA and had access to extensive data on the NSA’s surveillance program. Booz Allen Hamilton, owned by the Carlyle Group, posted $5.7 billion in revenues for the most recent fiscal year, 98 percent of which came from government funding, according to the New York Times. Snowden described why broad surveillance poses a risk to everyone not just those who commit illegal acts. “You don’t have to have done anything wrong, you simply have to have to have eventually fallen under suspicion from somebody, even by a wrong call and then they can use the system to go back in time and scrutinize every decision you’ve ever made, every friend you’ve ever discussed something with and attack you on that basis to derive suspicion from an innocent life and paint anyone in the context of a wrong-doer.” In identifying himself as the whistleblower, Snowden said his future would be uncertain and he would face risks. “You can’t come forward against the world’s most powerful intelligence agencies and be completely free from risk, because they’re such powerful adversaries no one can meaningfully oppose them. If they want to get you, they’ll get you in time. But at the same time you have to make a determination about what it is that is important to you.” The Department of Justice said it has opened a criminal investigation into the leaking of the NSA documents.

While what’s considered noise is individual, the range at which it damages our hearing and even our health is not. According to WHO, exposures in excess of 85 dB for more than 8 hours is potentially hazardous. 85 dB is equivalent to the sound of heavy truck traffic. Children are most at risk: as many as 80% of elementary school children use iPod-like music players for long periods at high volumes. Additionally, even if noise doesn’t wake you from sleep, sleeping with noise in excess of only 30 dB causes sleep disturbances, high blood pressure, elevated heart rate and pulse, changes in respiration, cardiac arrhythmia’s, and body movements. Since a typical daytime quiet neighborhood is about 45 dB, it isn’t hard to imagine that many neighborhoods exceed 30 dB at night. So where does that place noise on the list of exposures that contribute to illness?"

"Radia" is a network of international radio stations interested in creative and forgotten ways of making radio. Each week one station makes an episode for all the others. This week, from free103point9 and WGXC, Sam Sebren and Liz LoGiudice bring you a glimpse into the transmission of Anguilla rostrata, aka the American eel. Sebren and LoGiudice trace the eel’s story from the Hudson River to the Caribbean, sometimes by way of Europe and the Pacific. Sebren and LoGiudice look at the American Eel Project’s Hudson River Estuary Program. Teams of scientists, students, and over 200 community volunteers monitor and count glass eels at 12 HREP sample stream locations along the Hudson River in New York State in the United States. Each year, glass eels – the tiny, transparent young fish – navigate the Atlantic Ocean all the way from the Sargasso Sea to the rivers along the East Coast. Every March and April, these young fish migrate into the rivers and freshwater streams, where they mature for 20 years or more before returning to the Sargasso Sea to mate and die. This episode of “Radia” tracks their progress in the Hudson River, and around the world. The entire show serves as a metaphor for the “Radia” stations and weekly transmission. Liz LoGiudice is an environmental educator and eel devotee who helps to coordinate the Hudson River Eel Project in Greene County. Sam Sebren is a volunteer citizen scientist for the HREP American Eel Research project, and a multidisciplinary artist who began his career in the East Village New York arts scene in the 1980s. A prolific maker, Sebren’s visual works take form in installation, collage, painting, photography, video, and public works. His sound-based works have ties to noise and no-genre music (Menlo Park Recordings). Sebren also uses the medium of radio to activate dialogue around ecological and social justice issues impacting New York’s upper Hudson Valley. From Wikipedia: "Robert George "Joe" Meek (5 April 1929 – 3 February 1967[1]) was a pioneering English record producer and songwriter. His best-remembered hit is the Tornados' "Telstar" (1962), which became the first record by a British group to reach No.1 in the US Hot 100. It also spent five weeks atop the UK singles chart, with Meek receiving an Ivor Novello Award for this production as the "Best-Selling A-Side" of 1962. Meek's other hits include "Don't You Rock Me Daddy-O" and "Cumberland Gap" by Lonnie Donegan (as engineer), "Johnny Remember Me" by John Leyton, "Just Like Eddie" by Heinz, "Angela Jones" by Michael Cox, "Have I the Right?" by the Honeycombs, and "Tribute to Buddy Holly" by Mike Berry. Meek's concept album I Hear a New World is regarded as a watershed in modern music for its innovative use of electronic sounds. Joe Meek also produced music for films such as Live It Up!
