The premiere episode of curator and writer Manuel Cirauqui's new monthly program on WGXC premieres Monday, June 3, 2013 at 1 a.m. Symposium is a program about lectures and other related modes of critical discourse, presented with a strong focus on contemporary art and critique. The program uses radio as a creative device for mediation, reproduction, re-contextualization, and commentary. (Note: This show will interrupt the rebroadcast from the Chris Forsyth/Alexander Turnquist show earlier in the evening. Turnquist's set will air after this show at 2 a.m.)

From Free Speech Radio News: Today, the Supreme Court ruled that police may take and analyze DNA samples from a suspect held for a serious offense, paving the way for the procedure to become more common across the nation. In the case Maryland versus King, the high court ruled five to four that when police officers have probable cause they can take a cheek swab during detention in custody. The case centers on the conviction of Alonzo King, a Maryland man who was identified as the perpetrator of an unsolved rape when he was booked for separate assault charges. Victims rights groups and law enforcement hailed the decision, saying it would help identify perpetrators and prevent crime, but civil rights and privacy advocates argued that the DNA collecting is a violation of the Fourth Amendment. In a moment, we’ll hear from Hanni Fakhoury, staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, but first we’re joined by Jayann Sepich, cofounder of DNA Saves, a legislative advocacy group she founded with her husband after the murder of their daughter, Katie.

And the lowliest geek clad in homemade cardboard robot armor not only received this Great Man's approval, that kid was imbued with the Truth that HE WAS ON THE RIGHT TRACK, even as those around him sought to derail his dreams. Forry did more than simply FEED those dreams, he made them GLORIOUS! I knew this wonderful being so well that it tormented me to hear that he was on a deathwatch in November of 2008--thinking how empty life would be without Forry was more than my bursting heart could bear. So I tried to paint my listeners a righteous portrait of this man so that the SubGenius world would know exactly what a precious being we were losing. Forry's caregiver, the dedicated and loyal Joe Moe, wrote to say that he had played the show for Forry, who got a special sparkle from the part where I took advantage of my bully pulpit to bully a bully who had grievously bullied this great man throughout the twilight years of his life. I said the things that Forry would never bring himself to express--but it was a score that needed to be settled. All of the good wishes that poured in from every corner of the world were like a shot of adrenaline for this wonderful old man--our Forry rallied and held on to life for a few more sweet weeks, finally succumbing to the embrace of Prince Sirki the first week in December 2008. It was time to replay it, and as I spent hours grooming the pops out of THE TIN AGE, hearing that voice once more made the computer screen blur through fresh floods of tears. But it brought home the point that the Creature Forry shall always walk among us, for he left so much of his remarkable soul behind him. "Forry, Hallelujah!" is a mix of robots and monsters, because Forry was all about BOTH. But more than that--Forry was all about US. And we shall not meet his like again.

The order, from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, required Verizon to provide information on its clients’ phone calls beginning in April. The news comes amid increased scrutiny of the Obama administration’s national security policies, stemming from the recent seizure of reporters’ phone records by the Department of Justice, and the prosecution of whistleblower Bradley Manning. The Amateur Radio Relay Legua reports: "The deadlines have been set for comments and reply comments in an FCC proceeding to reassess the limits and policies governing exposure to radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields. On March 27, the FCC released a First Report and Order, Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and Notice of Inquiry (ET Docket Nos. 13-84 and 03-137). Publication in the June 4, 2013 Federal Register (http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2013-06-04/pdf/2013-12713.pdf) started the clock on a 90-day period for comments, the deadline for which is September 3. There is an additional 60-day period for reply comments, i.e. until November 1. The unusually long period for comments reflects the complexity of the proceeding and underscores the Commission’s desire for specific information on the costs and benefits related to the RF exposure issue...." "While the FCC proposals do not change the existing RF exposure limits, they include the deletion of existing special exemptions from evaluation in the Amateur Radio Service in Section 97.13(c) of its rules. Minor rules changes adopted in the Report and Order section of the document take effect on August 5. Radia Show 425: Captain Klangedum on tour by: Radio WORM in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. Recorded april 19th, Rotterdam at the Red Ear Festival. Musicians; Peter Van Bergen, Robbert van Hulzen, Lukas Simonis. Three musicians were invited by the Red Ear Festival to tour six restaurants in the surrounding area of the festival (the so-called ‘Rotterdam Manhattan At The Maas’ district) with unexpecting audiences. These are recording of 4 of their performances, sometimes lasting 2 minutes before they were told (very politely) to go away. there’s also lots of recordings of the musicians NOT playing. Any unsuspected conclusions? Yes. Free Improv music goes down well with eaters of red meat (Gauchos!).

"HPSCHD," John Cage and Lejaren HIller’s legendary Gesamtkunstwerk is a mass media orgy, considered by many as the wildest, largest, and loudest musical composition of the 20th century. In this conversation, David Weinstein hosts three participants in the 2013 restaging in New York: composer/curator Nick Hallett, filmmaker Bradley Eros, and Cage collaborator/composer Joel Chadabe, along with Cage specialist/composer Ron Kuivila. The program is interspersed with excerpts from a production of "HPSCHD" at the Ontario College of Art & Design, Toronto, June 11, 2008. Issue Project Room presents this spectacle on May 3rd and 4th in collaboration with Electronic Music Foundation and Eyebeam Art and Technology Center, as part of the 2013 Darmstadt Essential Repertoire series. Performances take place at Eyebeam Friday, May 3 from 5pm to 10pm and on Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 1pm until 6pm. This new production features composer Joel Chadabe, who has directed performances of HPSCHD throughout the world, as artistic advisor. Keyboardist Neely Bruce, who performed at the 1969 premiere, plays in the harpsichord ensemble. Artist Bradley Eros curates an extensive body of film and video artists to interpret the immersive visual score. WGXC will be broadcasting live from the Basilica Hudson at the Flag Day Goth/New Wave Dance Party featuring DJ's Becka Diamond and Shannon F of Light Asylum. Becka Diamond is a DJ, fashion stylist, curator, photographer, music correspondent, and writer. Founding member and half of goth electronic duo Light Asylum, Shannon F is a force to be reckon with and veteran of the NYC music scene.

Poff and Aldrich will pursue emergent phenomenon in the Wave Farm’s hidden soundscape, translating atmospheric radio, underwater sound, and tiny natural vibrations into outdoor sculptures that encourage listeners to consider the unexpected results of our relationships with each other and our environment. Their project, Wave Farm Translations, will include three phases: Research, Production, and Sharing, which will include a WGXC 90.7-FM interview/playlist, a sensor-building workshop, and complete online documentation.
