Mankind has been exploring psychedelic substances for thousands of years. In some cultures the use of psychedelics is a ritual in their religion and integral to their daily life. Yet, it is only in the last century when governmental prohibition of psychedelics has made scientific research into the many medicinal, therapeutic, and other benefits of psychedelic substances illegal. Evidence shows that psychedelics can help people with problems from PTSD to opiate addiction to cancer, but pharmaceutical companies and the U.S. government continue to control drug policy in this "war on consciousness." For this edition of the NIRRH, Sam Sebren uses field recordings he made of the sound of cicadas being drowned out by traffic and other nearby machines, and his recordings of a Greene County legislative hearing when all the legislators were chattering simultaneously during a recess, combined with scientists and experts throughout the last 5 decades speaking about psychedelics. The resulting sound collage connects dots between drug laws, our natural world, health, and our search for higher consciousness, as a resurgence in psychedelic research is expanding around the world.
