John Mason reports in the Register Star farmers from throughout the region came together for the Hudson Valley Farmers Forum at Columbia-Greene Community College, Mon., Aug. 20. During a Q&A with a panel of government officials that included U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson, state Sen. Roy McDonald and Assemblywoman Didi Barrett, the obstacles faced by young farmers became apparent, according to Mason. Concerns raised during the discussion included: Problems with the federal certification program for seasonal, non-immigrant foreign workers, the challenge of finding viable, affordable farm land in the Hudson Valley, buying local, the pressure of increasing tax rates and the importance of passing the federal Farm Bill. The panel was moderated by Lindsay Lusher Shute, a founder of the National Young Farmers Coalition. Read the full story in the Register Star.

On the "WGXC Afternoon Show" Mon., Aug. 20, Spencertown resident Paige Orloff discussed last week’s public meeting about the Aug. 1 TCI industrial fire in Ghent. Orloff’s was one of the residents at the meeting who spoke up and questioned the wisdom of allowing TCI to rebuild in the same location. TCI had another fire at the same location last January. • The Register Star is reporting cleanup at the TCI of New York site in West Ghent appeared to have begun, Mon., Aug. 20, but a "scheduling glitch" will now delay the work until later in the week. A 24-hour security staff is patrolling the area, which is surrounded by a tall chain-link fence. Miller Environmental Group, Inc., an environmental response, remediation and restoration services company, is in charge of the cleanup. The company has offices throughout the northeastern U.S., including Albany. Miller reports its client base consists of petroleum companies, chemical manufacturers and processors, and utility companies.

Japanther (Ian Vanek and Matt Reilly, below) built a "Remote Audio Outpost" at Wave Farm in Acra. Wave Farm is a center for radio artists, that also includes a WGXC studio. As artists-in-residence, Japanther built this project with Jason Rutherford and Gardener Allen, as an A-frame structure with a rotary telephone tied into solar panels to power the mp3 recorder inside. The phone will be set so anyone who picks up the receiver triggers the recording, and has hook-ups for live broadcasts from the back corner of the forest at Wave Farm. Billy Shannon reported in the Register Star the town of Greenport intends to apply for grant money to extend its proposed sidewalk project to the Hudson Junior-Senior High School on Harry Howard Ave. The project currently calls for walkways stretching from the north end of Joslen Boulevard to the corner of Livingston Parkway. The Joslen sidewalk proposal has been in the works since 2000, and has stalled time and time again in front of the state Department of Transportation. The Joslen project is not slated to begin until 2017, but town Supervisor John Porreca is hoping with the prospect of federal dollars to extend the proposal it will get moved up in priority. W.T. Eckert reported in The Daily Mail the Columbia-Greene Community College 2012-13 budget has now been approved on both sides of the river. The $16.84 million spending plan was ratified by the Columbia County Board of Supervisors Aug. 8; the Greene County Legislature voted in favor of the proposal last week. Under the budget, annual full-time tuition will increase four percent, from $3,648 to $3,792, per semester. The majority of students enrolled at CGCC are from Columbia County, but according to college president James Campion, the number of enrolled students from Greene County increased six percent this year, compared to only two percent for Columbia. The Daily Freeman reported private-sector employment in the Hudson Valley increased by 2.2 percent during the 12-month period ending July 2012, while the government sector shed jobsf. The Putnam-Rockland-Westchester metro area experienced the greatest job growth, ranking third of the 14 New York state metro areas rated by the state Department of Labor. Ulster County ranked sixth. Greene County experienced a 1 percent growth rate, but Columbia County jobs fell by 0.6 percent. Ariel Zangla reported in the Daily Freeman on the upcoming 10th anniversary of the disappearance of Audrey May Herron. Herron, 31, left work Aug. 29, 2002, at the end of her shift as a licensed practical nurse at the former Greene County Long-Term Health Care Center in the Jefferson Heights section of Catskill, and was never seen again. The Freehold resident's family and friends attribute her disappearance to foul play -- there is no way the mother of three would have abandoned her children, they say. The New York State Police report the case remains open and active. A “Riding for Audrey” motorcycle event will be held Sat., Aug. 25 at Brennan's School House Inn in Earlton. Proceeds will be split among Herron’s children and shared with The Center for Hope. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.

"This is a recording of two classical Danish psalms played at the organ in an old church in Han Herred, Northern Jutland. The church was originally build of granite in the 12th century in roman style. Other parts such as the tower were added later in the late middle ages, and a major repair was made in 1801. Most of the inventory is from the 16th and 17th century, however the organ is said to be far newer. Historically, this is a windy and remote region of the country, squeezed between Limfjorden and the North Sea, and it has been highly affected by sand drift over the centuries. Below is the resulting audio-video footage from July 2012. The sound is captured about four meters in front of the organ. Listen in headphones for the best quality."

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="100"] Didi Barrett[/caption]On Thu., Aug., 16, hundreds of citizens attended the meeting organized by Assemblymember Didi Barrett at 6:30 p.m., at the West Ghent Volunteer Fire Department Station on Route 9H. Brian Hemlock, co-owner of TCI Inc., was said to be attending, but Barrett reported that he could not be there because of a death in his family. No other TCI representatives were present, and, when the crowd learned all that, Barrett lost control of the meeting with several outbursts from the crowd. • Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Thomas Lanphear, said, “We dropped the ball,” on communicating with residents in a timely and direct enough way.
• All the county’s supervisors but one, Robin Andrews of Claverack, and all Ghent Town Board members, did not attend.
• Courtney Powell, a fire auxiliary member, lives a quarter-mile from the fire, and said, “Who allowed this company to come into this area and not give us equipment to fight this fire? We didn’t have foam — shame on Columbia County. I’ve had health problems coming out my ears I can’t explain. When I ask to get samples, I’m told to go to TCI — what a joke. When I asked these officials if they would eat a salad out of my garden, I get no answers."

PaddleHead Boards opens on the Hudson River in Athens this weekend, and owners Mike Barber and Carla Picayo spoke with WGXC's Sam Sebren about the news business. Paddleboarding is a surface water sport in which participants are propelled by a swimming motion using their arms while lying or kneeling on a paddleboard. From Wikipedia: Conrad ("Conny") Schnitzler (17 March 1937 – 4 August 2011) was a prolific German experimental musician.... He was an early member of Tangerine Dream (1969–1970) and a founder of the band Kluster. He left Kluster in 1971, first working with his group Eruption and then focusing on solo works. Schnitzler participated in several collaborations with other electronic musicians.

Jim Planck writes in The Daily Mail the NYS Environmental Facilities Corporation announced Wed., Aug. 15, its approval of a $1.725 million loan to the Village of Hunter for the completion of its back-up drinking water supply and delivery system. The village can now use Dolans Lake, a village-owned impoundment fed by an intake channel from Schoharie Creek, as its back-up supply. The funding will also help with the planning and construction of an infiltration gallery at the lake, including mains between the lake and the plant, along with additional filtration capacity. "By relying on the improved filtration system and the increased source capacity from Dolans Lake, the residents of Hunter will be provided with a back-up supply of drinking water that is clean and reliable,” said EFC President Matthew Driscoll. Nathan Mayberg reports in the Register Star Village of Kinderhook voters approved a referendum 340 to 143 on Wed., Aug. 15, to allow approximately 35 property owners in its business district, including commercial and residential units, to connect with the village of Valatie sewage system. The estimated cost of extending the sewer lines from Valatie to Kinderhook will be more than $900,000, according to officials. Grants and donations will cover the majority of the expense, and the Kinderhook Village board will bond the remaining $231,000 of the cost. Read the full story in the Register Star.

On Mon., Aug. 13 on the "WGXC Afternoon Show," Assemblymember Didi Barrett, Ghent activist Patti Matheney, and filmmaker David McDonald talked about the public information meeting Thu., Aug., 16 about the second TCI fire, at the firehouse in West Ghent. Representatives from eight county, state and federal offices will be in attendance at the public information meeting on Thursday, Aug. 16 at 6:30 p.m., at the West Ghent Volunteer Fire Department Station on Route 9H. Brian Hemlock, co-owner of TCI Inc., will also attend with officials from the Environmental Protection Agency; New York State Department of Health; New York State Department of Environmental Conservation; New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets; New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services; Columbia County Office of Emergency Management; and Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. Barrett, who represents the 103rd District including parts of Columbia and Dutchess counties, spoke on WGXC about the Aug. 1 fire that burned almost an entire day, belching smoke that has concerned some local residents. 2 p.m. Between the Lines: Robert Titus, Carolyn Bennett, Larry Gambon -- Professor Robert Titus, known as the "Catskill Geologist," Carolyn Bennett, historian of the Zadock Pratt Museum in Prattsville and Larry Gambon, a photographer who shot extensive footage of the damage done by the Hurricane Irene, discuss Prattsville one year on. Since Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney chose Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his vice-presidential nominee last weekend, Congressional candidates across the nation have been running to and from Ryan's position on several budget issues, including Medicare. In the Aug. 14 Capitol Confidential blog, Jimmy Vielkind quotes both Democratic challenger Julian Schreibman and Republican incumbent Chris Gibson about their political views in relation to Ryan's, in their contest for the NY 19th Congressional district seat.

Julian Schreibman:

“Medicare is possibly the most successful program that exists to protect our seniors and ensure that in times of need they have health insurance,” said Schreibman. “It’s been the most successful program at controlling costs…Medicare does that more successfully than other insurance plans. Protecting it is front and center in this election. The selection of Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney’s running mate confirms that changing Medicare radically and ending it as we know it is part of the agenda.” He called the voucher system “an underfunded coupon plan.” Gibson voted for Ryan’s 2011 budget plan, which included the voucher system — Gibson has always insisted on calling it a system of “premium support” — but passed over Ryan’s Republican-authored budget plan this year in favor of the bipartisan Cooper-LaTourette plan, which is silent on the issue of vouchers v. fee for services, but sets cost targets to be worked out later. It also includes a framework for comprehensive tax reform and sets defense budget targets $500 billion less than Ryan’s plan. “Cooper-LaTourette left a lot to the imagination. The congressman voted that way only after redistricting gave him a tough race,” Schreibman said. “Nothing he has ever said has been inconsistent with his support for the Ryan budget. Those are what his principles are, and we’re going to make sure voters know it.”

Chris Gibson:

Gibson stopped by the Times-Union's editorial office on Tue., Aug. 14, and did not repudiate a voucher system. He says he voted to fund a Medicare extension last year, and to repeal the Affordable Care Act, or "Obamacare." “This is a vehicle that Democrats and Republicans will work for, and it begins the conversation on health care,” Gibson said. “We’re going to have to reach a bipartisan consensus on how we need to do this…it’s been accentuated again that when we embark on one-party reform of a major program, we’re going to have issues questioning its legitimacy going forward…One of the encouraging things about Cooper-LaTourette is it at least gets it started…It lacks in robust details, but it commits to an accountable care approach that which is a way of addressing the fraud, waste and abuse, it commits to more usage of discount drugs — so at least it’s a start where we can get Republicans and Democrats together at the table.”

The Village of Athens Mayor, Andrea Smallwood, was a guest on the "WGXC Afternoon Show" Tue., Aug. 14 from Wave Farm in Acra. Smallwood discussed the new businesses that have recently opened in the village, and the noise issues that have surfaced with the business growth. Crossroads Brewery has expanded, with a restaurant now, and plans for a second-floor entertainment area in the town's former opera house. This weekend, a new business, Paddle Head Boards, opens down on the Hudson River. And recently, Dionysos began hosting live music outside. The Village is also hosting live concerts on the waterfront on Friday evenings. A few neighbors complained about the noise at Dionysos and talk of a noise ordinance has ensued in Athens. WGXC volunteer and Athens resident Sam Sebren joined hosts Peter Krug and Tom Roe, in the first of several WGXC interviews with Athens residents on both sides of this issue. Smallwood gave an overview of the situation, and cuationed against writing a law for one situation that would later apply to all other businesses in the town.
