Melanie Lekocevic reports in The Daily Mail Athens Village Democrats selected former Greene Co. legislator Chris Pfister as its choice for mayor, and nominated incumbent trustees Robert June and Anthony Patsky to run for re-election. Elections will be held in March. The decision was made at the Democratic caucus, Tues., Jan. 29. Three-term Mayor Andrea Smallwood will not run for re-election. Independent candidate Rick Surrano recently launched his campaign for village trustee. A lifelong Republican, Surrano is running on the newly created Just For Today party line. Surrano's father served as mayor of Athens, as did his grandmother, Emma Ryan. The Republican Party held its caucus Mon., Jan. 28, but did not nominate any candidates for the upcoming elections.

William J. Kemble reports in the Daily Freeman the Moreland Commission at SUNY New Paltz heard testimony Tues., Jan. 29, from various officials attesting to the work Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. did before, during and after Superstorm Sandy. Arthur Snyder, the Ulster County emergency management director praised the utility for a variety of tasks, including the implementation of a previously agreed-upon staff plan to restore electrical outages and efforts to keep the public and government officials informed. Ronald Hicks, Dutchess County’s commissioner of strategic planning and development, said before the storm became a concern to the general public, Central Hudson staff had already briefed the county staff on preparations underway. Nathan Mayberg reports in the Register Star Columbia County Sheriff’s Department Capt. David Bartlett has officially announced his intention to run for Sheriff. Bartlett is a 29-year veteran of the department. He has been the captain of the law enforcement division for the past eight years and chairs the county's Safe Schools Committee. A native of Auburn, he graduated from SUNY Cobleskill with a liberal arts and humanities degree. Bartlett is seeking the Republican nomination. Sheriff David Harrison has announced he will retire at the end of the year. Harrison has endorsed Bartlett as his successor. Read the full story in the Register Star.

The Daily Freeman is reporting Greene County students in grades kindergarten through 12 can take part in a competition to design the official logo of the Greene County Youth Fair. The design must contain the words “Greene County Youth Fair,” should focus on youth and agriculture in the County, should be flexible in size and must contain color. The entry deadline is April 30. The winner will be announced Memorial Day weekend and be awarded a $100 U.S. Savings Bond. This year’s fair runs from July 25 to 28 at Angelo Canna Town Park in Cairo. The National Weather Service predicts one to three inches of rain over the next 48 hours, and has issued a flood watch for eastern New York and much of New England. The NWS notes that the heavy rain will be accompanied by snow melt, as temperatures will be in the '50s Wednesday. The ground is frozen across most of the area, which could result in a localized flash flood threat where intense rainfall rates occur. The NWS warns rural road washouts and river ice jams are possible over the next several days in the Hudson Valley.

Temperatures have remained nearly steady and are expected to be around freezing by daybreak. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visability. The Times Union is reporting multiple delays in Bennington, Delaware and Rennsselaer counties this morning. In Columbia and Greene counties, only Windham-Ashland-Jewett Central School District is opening late. That district is reporting a two-hour delay.

Columbia County will test its new CodeRED Emergency Notification System, Fri., Feb. 1. All registered numbers will be called beginning at 10 a.m., according to a statement released by the Columbia County Emergency Management Office. The test will allow county personnel the chance to operate the system as if it was a real emergency. Patrick Grattan, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, urged everyone to go to columbiacountyny [dot] com and follow the CodeRED link at the top of the page to register. "If your contact information is not in the database you will not receive a call when an urgent message is sent," Grattan said. In particular, businesses should register, as well as individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, who have changed their number recently and those who use a cell phone exclusively or have Internet phones as their primary numbers. Some of the stories that made the news, Jan. 25 to Jan. 28:

John Mason reported in the Register Star the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control determined the Aug. 1 TCI fire broke out in the area of the building occupied by Public Substations Services. The fire may have been caused by a new sodium heater left on by a PSS employee. The Wheeling, West Virginia-based PSS, was leasing an area of the southwest part of the warehouse for two years. The company operated two mobile processing units used to process PCBs, according to the report released Jan. 2. A Ghent town official said the town had no knowledge PSS was located at the TCI site. The heat of the fire was so intense the heavy gauge steel beams and the steel truss system that supported the roof collapsed, as did the steel frames of the PSS trailers. TCI co-owner and Vice President Brian Hemlock said in an email to the paper the report contained a number of inaccuracies regarding the nature of TCI's business and the materials being treated at the site. TCI's plans to rebuild will be the subject of a joint meeting of the Ghent Town, Planning and Zoning boards, Feb. 7. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Kyle Adams reported in The Daily Mail more than 150 local officials and environmental leaders converged on Hunter, Sat., Jan. 26, for the 2013 Schoharie Watershed Summit to discuss watershed management, including a flood hazard mitigation program. U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson said there has been significant progress since Tropical Storm Irene hit the region in 2011, but there remains more to be done. Keynote speaker Michael Kline of the Vermont State Rivers Program addressed the need for long-term preventative thinking. State Assemblyman Peter Lopez spoke, as did Jeffery Baker, of the Coalition of Watershed Towns and James MacBroom, senior vice president of Malone & MacBroom. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

Joe Gentile reported in the Register Star the Hudson Area Library Board of Trustees has set a target date of Sept. 2014, for the opening of the library's new location in the Hudson Armory, slated to be renamed the Galvan Community Learning Center. Located at the corner of north Fifth and State streets, the library will occupy more than 11,000 square feet, nearly twice the size of its present home at 400 State St. The library board approved the final schematic design for the new facility at a meeting, Mon., Jan. 7. Under the negotiated terms of a 30-year lease agreement with Galvan, the library will pay $12 in annual rent, plus utilities. Read the full story in the Register Star.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for winter weather in eastern New York and western New England, beginning 10 a.m. Mon., Jan. 28. The advisory will remain in effect until 7 a.m., Tuesday. The NWS is predicting snow, freezing rain, freezing drizzle and sleet. Up to four inches of snow and a tenth of an inch of ice are expected. The snow will begin Monday morning, changing to freezing rain and sleet during the late afternoon and evening. Temperatures will rise from the teens Monday morning to the low 30s by Tuesday. The weather is expected to cause slippery roads and limited visability.

Katie Kocijanski reports in the Chatham Courierthe five members of the Chatham Village Planning Board voted unanimously Mon., Jan. 21, to allow Price Chopper to proceed with plans to build a new, 45,000-square-foot supermarket in Ghent, with a portion in the village of Chatham. Chatham Associates presented an updated proposal for the project that included changes to the loading dock and the landscape prior to the vote. The project can now move forward. At the same meeting, the board also discussed a pending application from SoCo Creamery, a micro-creamery based in Great Barrington, Mass. The producer of ice cream, sorbet and gelato is looking to open a seasonal location at 2 Main St. in the village. Read the full story in the Chatham Courier.

Melanie Lekocevic reports in The Daily Mail Steven Van Hoesen was chosen as the new Athens Town Council member, during the Council's yearly reorganization meeting held early this week. Town Supervisor Lee Allen Palmateer chose Councilman Robert Butler as deputy town supervisor, replacing Gene Hatton. Hatton is now serving as the District 3 representative to the Greene County Legislature. Butler has served on the Council for six years. He is also Palmateer's cousin. The mercury in Hunter, New York thermometers should not rise above 20 degrees F this weekend, and a couple more inches of snow is possible, according to the National Weather Service. Wind chills could also be as low as -20 F, so winter enthusiasts are warned to be careful. Friday, Jan. 25, Windham Mountain turns 53 with a 2,000 pound cake in the shape of the mountain made by the TLC television show "Cake Boss" at a 1:30 p.m. celebration. Windham has 36 trails with 15-28" of snow, with all six lifts running. Hunter Mountain has 31" of natural snow so far this season, with anywhere between 12-52" of snow on 43 trails. On Jan. 29-30 teams of five firefighters from New York City and other East Coast cities dressed in full turn-out gear will attempt to navigate a race course while carrying a 50-foot fire hose on Hunter Mountain competition. Catamount Ski in Hillsdale reports, "Double black diamond Catapult will be open starting on Friday, with ungroomed, untouched mounds of freshly made snow. It will truly be for experts only this weekend, as skiing and riding will be tough." They have 24 of 33 trails open, with 12-36" of snow.

I’m here to represent everyone, regardless of party affiliation and where you live. ...If I can help you, I will.” The Schenectady County farmer and former school board vice president.was cheered loudly by Democrats who lined the Senate chamber and crowded a spectator gallery above.
