The Associated Press is reporting Poughkeepsie-based Central Gas & Electric is exploring using radio-controlled drones to help inspect utility structures and find damaged wires and poles. Central Hudson says drones could help find downed poles or wires, especially in remote locations. The company said in a release the drones have the potential to substantially reduce costs and delays. The utility is using a DJI Phantom 2 drone as part of its initiative, which is in the research-and-development phase. The company says it plans to invest more in the program.

Matthew Hamilton in the Albany Times-Union reports that the battle between New York City tenants who want to use the internet-based service Airbnb to sub-lease their apartments, and landlords who do not want to let them, has now moved upstate. In Stuyvesant, New York magazine first reported, Michelle Martinez was evicted by Christopher Griffith, the owner of the renovated 1880s Dutch barn, after Griffith discovered that Martinez was sub-leasing the barn for $4,000 a month. Now Martinez appears in an Airbnb ad campaign, "designed to depict its users as everyday New Yorkers trying to make a modest extra income. Her eviction has been taken up by some state lawmakers who believe Airbnb facilitates the flouting of the city's housing law," according to Hamilton. In New York City, it's illegal to rent out a Class A multiple-dwelling property for any period of less than 30 days. Locally, laws vary by jurisdiction. On Oct. 14 there were Airbnb Columbia County listings in Hillsdale, New Lebanon, Chatham, Craryville, Copake, Elizaville, Valatie, and Hudson, and Greene County listings in Coxsackie, East Durham, Hunter, Windham, Cornwallville and Catskill. Audrey Matott is reporting in The Daily Mail town of Greenville employees will not see an increase in salary in the coming year. Town Supervisor Paul Macko made the announcement at the Town Board budget workshop last week. “There are no provisions in our budget for raises. It’s a lean budget," Macko said. Despite the hold on wages, Macko acknowledged taxes would still increase in 2015, however. The bulk of projected budget increases are related to employee benefits, he said. An exception was the high cost of snow removal, attributed to the escalating price of salt. According to the See Through New York database, the town of Greenville employed 21 people in 2014. Its annual payroll totaled nearly $600,000. The board will hold a second budget workshop Wed., Oct. 22 at Pioneer Town Hall. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

Kyle Hughes of nysnys [dot] com is reporting that in addition to the gubernatorial and other statewide races, voters next month will have the opportunity to cast ballots on redistricting, having the Legislature go paperless, and borrowing $2 billion for schools. Legislators quietly put the three ballot proposals in place for the Nov. 4 election. Proposal 1 revises the state's redistricting procedure, creating a 10-member panel to replace the current joint Senate and Assembly commission, to draw the state's voting districts. Proposal 2 would permit the electronic distribution of state legislative bills. This proposal would reportedly save the state $53 million in printing costs. Proposal 3 is "The Smart Schools Bond Act of 2014." The act would permit the state to borrow up to $2 billion for schools, primarily spending the money on short-term needs like electronic equipment, such as whiteboards, computer servers and laptop and tablet computers. The three proposals will appear on the reverse side of the paper ballots that now are used. Voters will have to remember to turn the page over to vote "yes' or "no" three times after marking their choices in the races for Congress, governor, attorney general, comptroller and various Senate and Assembly races. The Albany Times-Union reported late Mon., Oct. 13 that New York State Sen. Kathy Marchione (R-Halfmoon) pulled out of the Tue., Oct. 14 League of Women Voters of Saratoga County-sponsored candidates forum. Brian Howard (D-Troy), Marchione's opponent in the 43rd Senate District, will make a statement and be available afterward to meet people at the gathering, which also includes other Saratoga-oriented politicians, at 7 p.m. at Maple Avenue Middle School in Saratoga Springs. The 43rd Senate District includes Columbia and Rensselear counties. Marchione currently holds the seat; Howard is a former Chatham Central School District administrator. The Daily Freeman reports that U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson (R-Kinderhook), and Sean Eldridge (D-Shokan), will participate in a debate Thursday televised on WMHT and streamed online at wmht.org. The duo are running for Congress in New York’s 19th Congressional District which includes all of Ulster, Greene, and Columbia counties; most of Dutchess County; and all or part of seven other eastern New York counties. Gibson and Eldridge have previously debated in Lake Katrine and Poughkeepsie, with Eldridge showing up at a Catskill Meet the Candidates forum last week that Gibson did not attend. John Mason reported in the Register Star the former Ockawamick School, located in Claverack, is son the auction block. The building and its contents is being offered by Collar City Auctions of Troy. The auction went live Sept. 29 and will end 7 p.m., Thurs., Oct. 16. The 78,000 square foot building and 16 acres of land was listed with an opening bid of $5. So far, no bid has been received for the school itself. Most of the contents have drawn either minimum bids or none at all. Columbia County purchased the former high school for $1.5 million in 2008 and intended to turn the location into a county office campus. The building was appraised at $700,000 in 2013. The estimated taxes are $28,500. Board of Supervisors Chairman Pat Grattan said the county has the right to reject any and all bids. "We can't give it away," he said. Previews of the buildings and grounds will be conducted Tues., Oct. 14, and Wed., Oct. 15. More information can be found at Collar City Auctions Online [dot] com.

Ryan Anglim reported in The Daily Mail Congressman Chris Gibson endorsed 46th Senate District candidate George Amedore at Greene County Republican Headquarters in Catskill, Fri., Oct. 10. A crowd of about 30 people gathered on the sidewalk to hear the news. Gibson said Amedore understands, as a business owner, what it takes to have an environment that is conducive to growth. The congressman also said as state senator Amedore would also support a new direction in education. Both Gibson and Amedore are opponents of the Common Core Learning Standards.

In related campaign news, Joseph Spector, writing in The Journal News, reported the race between incumbent state Sen. Cecilia Tkaczyk (KAT-chik), a Democrat, and Republican George Amedore in the 46th Senate District is one of half a dozen key races up for grabs in the November election. Although statewide races will be on the ballot Nov. 4, the key races for the state Senate will likely have the biggest impact on state policy over the next two years. The Tkaczyk/Amedore race and others like it may decide the fate of issues such as a higher minimum wage, public financing of political campaigns and abortion rights in New York. Republicans and Democrats are waging an expensive, aggressive battle in races in the Rochester area, the Hudson Valley and Long Island. Other key contests include the race in the 40th District between Democrat Justin Wagner and Republican Terrence Murphy, and in the 41st District, where Republican Sue Serino is challenging incumbent Democrat Terry Gipson.

Ryan Anglim reported in The Daily Mail the Windham-Ashland-Jewett Central School District recently completed its annual external audit and received a clean bill of health from its auditors, according to Superintendent John Wiktorko (WICK-tor-koh). Board of Education member Drew Shuster said this marked the first time the district has received a totally clean audit. Shuster said, "Usually we've [had] just a little of things here and there, but this time [there was] nothing at all."

John Mason reported in the Register-Star local chef Dan Nilsson appeared on "Guy's Grocery Games" on the Food Network Sun., Oct. 12. The episode, "Pasta La Vista, Baby" featured the co-owner of da ba, located in Hudson. Nilsson met host Guy Fieri in 2004, Mason reported, when they both auditioned for the show “Who Wants to be the Next Food Network Star?” and Nilsson's tape made the blooper reel. The episode is scheduled to re-air on Oct. 20 and Oct. 25.

Matthew Hamilton reports in the Albany Times-Union that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced his plans to raise $1 billion from government and private sources to make high-speed broadband available statewide on Oct. 8. Cuomo called for $500 million in state investment for the New NY Broadband Fund, and matching outlays from companies that want to apply to provide the service to any given area, in an effort to lay 6,000 miles of fiber optic cables across the state. "Broadband availability is going to be what the interstate road system was in the '50s," Cuomo said, speaking in Colonie at the fuel cell manufacturer Plug Power. "The way you needed road access and access to basic utilities to do business, electric and phone — you're going to need access to broadband if you're going to be competitive." Of course, there is an election next month, both the reason for the announcement, and the results of which Cuomo will have to wait for to see if he can make universal broadband happen. WGXC broadcast live a Meet the Candidates Night, hosted by the Town and Country Women's Network, Thu., Oct. 9, at 6:30 p.m. at the Washington Irving Senior Center, 15 Academy St. in Catskill. Congressman Chris Gibson (Republican) was never confirmed and notified organizers he had a conflict in Ulster County a few hours before the event. Then George Amedore (Republican) called and said he was busy in Schenectady, and would not be able to attend. Around the same time, Amedore's campaign office sent a press release announcing a joint appearance with Gibson in Catskill Fri., Oct. 10 at 12:30 at Greene County Republican Headquarters. Everyone else invited was there including Gibson's Democratic opponent Sean Eldridge (who did not stay long, leaving after his opening statement), and Amedore's opponent, incumbent state Senator Cecilia Tkackyk (Democrat). Also speaking were incumbent state Assemblymember Peter Lopez (Republican, who spoke on Amedore's behalf), who running unopposed; Paul Salvino (Democrat) and Joseph Stanzione (Republican), running for the open Greene County District Attorney office; incumbent and unopposed Greene County Treasurer Peter Markou (Republican); and Town of Catskill justice candidates Rick Jacobs (Republican) and Laura Krzeminski (Democrat). Each candidate made a ten-minute introduction, and then took some questions written down from the audience. • The Windham Journal reports that Columbia-Greene Media named Hudson native Courtney Wrigley circulation manager, effective immediately, in charge of online and paper subscriptions for the local newspaper chain.

• Michael Ryan reported in the Windham Journal the new emergency services telecommunications tower on Windham Mountain is now up. Officials gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the site Fri., Oct. 3. The tower will make various emergency communications systems capable of exchanging and interpreting information, to avoid the type of communication breakdown that occurred in Aug. 2011, as a result of Tropical Storm Irene.

• The Associated Press is reporting in The Daily Freeman that the U.S. Department of Energy issued a presidential permit for the proposed 330-mile electric transmission line moving Canadian hydroelectric power to New York City, on a route that includes the Hudson River. The 1,000-megawatt Champlain Hudson Power Express has been discussed since 2008. See The Daily Freeman for more information.



• Julia Reischel in The Watershed Post reports a community radio employee of WIOX in Roxbury was fired for sending an offensive email to Congressman Chris Gibson's campaign email account. Gibson, currently running against Democrat Sean Eldridge to hold his seat in Washington D.C., was interviewed on Fox News Oct. 3 about the issue. "The fired employee allegedly sent multiple emails containing personal attacks over a period of months to Gibson's campaign staff using the official WIOX email account," Reischel writes. "The employee has not been named by the station or by WSKG, a nonprofit media company from Binghamton that merged with WIOX last year." Read the full story in The Watershed Post.

Michael Ryan is reporting in The Daily Mail Jewett Town Supervisor Carol Muth has announced her resignation, effective Oct. 31. She made the public announcement of her decision to step down during a town board meeting earlier this week. Muth has been in public service for 30 years. She was re-elected to a four-year term in 2013. A special election will be held in 2015 to determine who will complete the last two years of her unexpired term. The town council will name an interim supervisor later this month. Muth said her decision to stand down was due to various health issues and a desire to give time and attention to her 92-year-old parents. “I am grateful for the privilege of having served our town...," Muth said. The city of Hudson has suspended use of the road leading to and over the Ferry Street Bridge. The bridge extends over the railroad tracks from lower Front St. to the city waterfront. Mayor William H. Hallenbeck Jr. and Common Council President Donald Moore announced the decision in a statement released at midday, Thurs., Oct. 9. According to the statement, the action was taking following a thorough review of the bridge and a conversation with the New York State Department of Transportation concerning the deteriorating condition of the bridge, and the projected results of an annual bridge inspection by the department. The inspection is scheduled to occur within the next 60 days. In January, the DOT officially downgraded the bridge's weight limit from five to three tons due to "significant deterioration," following the 2013 bridge inspection. The bridge was built in 1905. Until further notice, the Broad Street crossing will be open for waterfront events and activities. The pedestrian walkway to the side of the Ferry Street Bridge, which is not part of the bridge structure, will remain open. Read more at City of Hudson [dot] org.

William J. Kemble in reporting in the Daily Freeman former Catskill Senior Center Director Anne Marie Moran has been sentenced to six months in jail and five years of probation for stealing $70,000 from an 84-year-old woman. The sentence was handed down Tues., Oct. 7, by Greene County Judge Terry Wilhelm. Moran was a town of Catskill employee. The town owns the senior center. Moran resigned in April.
