Michael Ryan is reporting in The Daily Mail Jewett Town Supervisor Carol Muth has announced her resignation, effective Oct. 31. She made the public announcement of her decision to step down during a town board meeting earlier this week. Muth has been in public service for 30 years. She was re-elected to a four-year term in 2013. A special election will be held in 2015 to determine who will complete the last two years of her unexpired term. The town council will name an interim supervisor later this month. Muth said her decision to stand down was due to various health issues and a desire to give time and attention to her 92-year-old parents. “I am grateful for the privilege of having served our town...," Muth said. The city of Hudson has suspended use of the road leading to and over the Ferry Street Bridge. The bridge extends over the railroad tracks from lower Front St. to the city waterfront. Mayor William H. Hallenbeck Jr. and Common Council President Donald Moore announced the decision in a statement released at midday, Thurs., Oct. 9. According to the statement, the action was taking following a thorough review of the bridge and a conversation with the New York State Department of Transportation concerning the deteriorating condition of the bridge, and the projected results of an annual bridge inspection by the department. The inspection is scheduled to occur within the next 60 days. In January, the DOT officially downgraded the bridge's weight limit from five to three tons due to "significant deterioration," following the 2013 bridge inspection. The bridge was built in 1905. Until further notice, the Broad Street crossing will be open for waterfront events and activities. The pedestrian walkway to the side of the Ferry Street Bridge, which is not part of the bridge structure, will remain open. Read more at City of Hudson [dot] org.

William J. Kemble in reporting in the Daily Freeman former Catskill Senior Center Director Anne Marie Moran has been sentenced to six months in jail and five years of probation for stealing $70,000 from an 84-year-old woman. The sentence was handed down Tues., Oct. 7, by Greene County Judge Terry Wilhelm. Moran was a town of Catskill employee. The town owns the senior center. Moran resigned in April.

Arthur Cusano in the Register-Star reports that the Columbia County Board of Supervisors Chairman Patrick Grattan, R-Kinderhook, wrote a letter to the Columbia Economic Development Corporation demanding $114,000 from the CEDC for money spent in 1997 on a 33-acre property they planned to sell to Ginsberg's Foods for an expansion center on the Ghent/Claverack border. The CEDC board of directors voted in August to sell that land, located across from Gerald R. Simons Industrial Park, on Route 66, to the food distributor, reportedly for $1. The land is partially located in Claverack and Ghent. According to the new report, the letter was disclosed Oct. 8 at an "emergency" CEDC meeting by board member Greg Fingar. "After the issue was discussed the CEDC members immediately went into executive session to discuss an unspecified personnel matter," Cusano wrote on Oct. 8. Read the full story in the Register-Star.

Rick Karlin in the Albany Times-Union reports that Environmental Advocates, a statewide environmental organization, on Oct. 8 gave Sen. Kathy Marchione its annual "Oil Slick" award, denouncing her environmental action. Marchione, a Halfmoon-based Republican who represents the 43rd Senate District including parts of Rensselaer and Columbia counties, got the group's focus for Marchione's work to repeal 2,000 regulations that she says are harmful to business. The bill Marchione championed never became law, and her staff counter the claims by touting her work on environmental funding and Superfund cleanups. "Marchione spokesman Josh Fitzpatrick derided the award as 'bogus,' saying that only five percent of the rules and regulations identified in that package dealt directly with environmental concerns," Karlin wrote. Arthur Cusano is reporting in the Register Star the Columbia County Courthouse will reopen in November. The building has been closed for 18 months for major renovation work, which was complicated by construction delays. It was originally slated to open in March. Columbia County Board of Supervisors Chairman Patrick Grattan announced news of the expected reopening at the monthly meeting of the full board, Wed., Oct. 8. The courts are expected to return to the courthouse the week of Nov. 27. The renovation project included construction of a 16,000-square-foot addition, and electrical, HVAC and plumbing renovations. The building was also brought into compliance with the requirements of Americans with Disabilities Act. There was significant asbestos abatement done on the building, as well. Grattan said the final cost of the project is expected to be just under $10 million. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Jordan Carleo-Evangelist reports in the Albany Times-Union that New Baltimore Republican Lisa Fisher won't be on the Conservative party line in November's state Supreme Court race, after acting state Supreme Court Justice Andrew Ceresia ruled Oct. 6 that the state Board of Elections can't put Fisher on the ballot line. Albany County Conservative Party Chairman Richard Stack sued to challenge the validity of his own party's judicial convention Sept. 20 in Coxsackie. But New York Conservative Party Chairman Michael Long and other party officers who oversaw the convention filed an appeal to the ruling Oct. 7, so Fisher, who lives in New Baltimore and works in Kingston, may yet be a Conservative candidate. Fisher is on the Republican line on the ballot, against Albany Democrat Justin Corcoran, who Stack wanted to back. Margaret “Peggy” Walsh unsuccessfully tried for the Democratic nomination in September with the Times-Union reporting, "Walsh’s insurgent bid within the Democratic party has been predicated on allegations that the party has routinely bypassed qualified female and minority candidates for white men." Republicans, announcing Fisher's nomination, wrote in a press release, "There are currently no elected, female trial judges serving in the Third Judicial District, which extends from the Capital Region into the Hudson Valley and Pennsylvania state border." District Attorney and Greene Co. Treasurer have been invited to participate. Each candidate will have the opportunity to address the audience and to answer questions from those in attendance. This event is coordinated and hosted by the Town and Country Women’s Network. The TCWN is the local chapter of the New York State Federation of Business and Professional Women. Founded in 1919, the national BPW is the oldest women’s organization and the only one devoted exclusively to the needs of working women.

Michael Ryan is reporting in the Windham Journal the new emergency services telecommunications tower on Windham Mountain is now up. Officials gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the site Fri., Oct. 3. The tower will make various emergency communications systems capable of exchanging and interpreting information, to avoid the type of communication breakdown that occurred in Aug. 2011, as a result of Tropical Storm Irene. The tower is limited to emergency services, but there is potential to expand the broadband capability in the future. The tower was a joint venture between Greene County and Windham Mountain. The county secured a Homeland Security grant to fund the project, while Windham Mountain donated the land and provided the labor and machinery to complete the task. The project cost $1 million. Scott Waldman in Capital New York reports that Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration edited and delayed a federal water study commissioned by state officials. The 2011 study, "was reportedly considering approving fracking on a limited basis," according to an early draft of the report by the U.S. Geological Survey obtained by Capital New York through a Freedom of Information Act request. Some of the original descriptions of environmental and health risks from high-impact hydraulic fracturing were played down or removed, according to the report. "The final version of the report also excised a reference to risks associated with gas pipelines and underground storage -- a reference which could have complicated the Cuomo administration's potential support for a number of other controversial energy projects," Waldman writes. The emails obtained also show that the state tracked people who read the study online, grouping them by institutions with which they were affiliated. Read the full story in Capital New York.

Julia Reischel in The Watershed Post reports a community radio employee of WIOX in Roxbury was fired for sending an offensive email to Congressman Chris Gibson's campaign email account. Gibson, currently running against Democrat Sean Eldridge to hold his seat in Washington D.C., was interviewed on Fox News Oct. 3 about the issue. "The fired employee allegedly sent multiple emails containing personal attacks over a period of months to Gibson's campaign staff using the official WIOX email account," Reischel writes. "The employee has not been named by the station or by WSKG, a nonprofit media company from Binghamton that merged with WIOX last year." Read the full story in The Watershed Post.

The Associated Press is reporting in The Daily Freeman that the U.S. Department of Energy issued a presidential permit for the proposed 330-mile electric transmission line moving Canadian hydroelectric power to New York City, on a route that includes the Hudson River. The Daily Freeman sponsored the second debate between incumbent Republican Chris Gibson and Democratic challenger Sean Eldridge at M. Clifford Middle School in Lake Katrine, in Ulster County. Gibson and Eldridge are vying to represent New York’s 19th Congressional District. The hourlong event was marked by the candidates criticizing one another's positions on the issues. And a standing-room-only audience repeatedly interrupting the speakers with supportive applause and shouted criticisms. The candidates were asked to speak about the issues that most affect residents in Ulster County, as well as how they would work to rein in the national debt, reform the national tax code, create jobs in the Hudson Valley and get the federal minimum wage increased. Audrey Matott is reporting in The Daily Mail the Cairo-Durham Board of Education is reaching out to community members in an effort to organize a long-range educational planning committee. Acting Superintendent Anthony Taibi said the planning committee's primary role is to determine what the district will look like 10 or 15 years in the future. During its first phase, the committee will develop a new vision and mission statement and goals for the district's future. In the second phase the committee will develop action plans based on the initiatives. The committee is expected to be composed of approximately 20 to 30 community members. Anyone wishing to participate must attend all five planning meetings scheduled to take place between Oct. 23 and Dec. 16. Max Oppen is reporting in The Daily Mail in light of the recent fatal accidents at Kaaterskill Falls in the town of Hunter, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has begun installing split-rail fencing at various parts of the popular tourist destination. The initial phase of the three-week project will include installing approximately 150 feet of fencing along the steep embankment to the right of Spruce Creek, just above the base of the second tier. This area was deemed a priority due to the steep slope and rocky terrain. The work is being done by the Adirondack Mountain Club's professional trail crew. The second phase of the project involves the construction of an additional 200 feet of fencing at the top of the falls. The DEC staff will be installing additional signage that warns of the dangers of proceeding beyond the fencing.

Katie Kocijanski reported in the Register Star local businesses from Columbia and Greene counties took over Basilica Hudson, Thurs., Oct. 2, for the ninth annual Buy Local Business Expo, hosted by the Columbia and Greene counties Chambers of Commerce. A total of 52 businesses came out to the event where business owners networked with their fellow business owners. “Many of our members have stories about making new business connections at these expos,” Columbia County Chamber of Commerce President David Colby said. “We have a good mix of everything from insurance to banking to food and beer and wine tasting.” Greene County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jeff Friedman said he was pleased with the turnout. He said it was very important for businesses from both counties to work together.

Matthew Hamilton is reporting at Capitol Confidential the first Siena poll for the hotly contested 46th Senate District rematch between Democrat incumbent Cecilia Tkaczyk (KAT-chik) and Republican George Amedore shows Amedore leading by 10 percent. The new poll, released early Mon., Oct. 6, shows a 19-point lead among Independent and other voters helping drive Amedore’s double-digit lead with less than a month to go until Election Day. Amedore also is doing better among Republicans than Tkaczyk is among Democrats. GOP gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino also leads in the district. Astorino has 43 percent of the vote to Andrew M. Cuomo’s 35 percent. In a statement received by WGXC early Monday, Tkaczyk campaign spokesman Jim Plastiras said the senator's campaign is just swinging into high gear, and with each debate held, voters are learning more about Amedore's "extremist, anti-choice, anti-woman, anti-environment and anti-consumer positions and voting record." Plastiras said voters will ultimately reject Amedore's "deeply disturbing views, as they did two years ago." The poll surveyed 470 likely voters within the district.

To vote Nov. 4 in Congressional, state, and local elections, voters must register this week. Mail-in voter registration forms must be postmarked by midnight, Oct. 10, and received by a board of elections office no later than Oct. 15. The voter registration form can be downloaded at www.elections.ny.gov. Alternatively, any New Yorker with an established account at the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, may register online at their MyDMV site. One can also register or find forms at most state and federal government offices. Residents who have moved to a new county within the state must re-register from their new address. Those who are currently registered and have moved to a new address in the same county should notify their county board of elections in writing of their move no later than October 15. Anyone unsure whether they are registered, or wish to verify their current address, may look-up their status www.elections.ny.gov.
