WGXC's Peter Krug was at opening day of the Greene County Youth Fair Thu., July 19 in Cairo's Angelo Canna Park. Krug spoke with members of the Greenville High School chapter of the FFA including 16-year-old FFA secretary Megan Terrell, and also Brent Bogardus, chairman of the Greene County Republicans, and other locals at the fair. He also recorded the sounds of some of the fair's animals, including turkeys, cows, chickens, goats and sheep. The Greene County Youth Fair runs through Sunday.

Hudson Third Ward Board of Supervisors representative and co-host of the "WGXC Afternoon Show" Thursdays on WGXC Ellen Thurston announced Thu., July 19 that performance artist Marina Abramović will be in Hudson Sun., Aug. 12, for a presentation about her proposed Marina Abramović Institute for the Preservation of Performance Art in the former Community Tennis building at 7th St. and Columbia St. in Hudson. Thurston said she spoke with Abramović representatives who told her to tell the media in Hudson. In May, Abramović gave a press conference about the plan in Queens at PS1, that WGXC broadcast live on 90.7-FM.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced $7.9 million in grants to small businesses and not-for-profits through the Business Flood Recovery Grant Program, Thu., July 19. Statewide, 584 businesses that sustained direct, flood-related damage as a result of Hurricane Irene or Tropical Storm Lee will receive a total of $7.9 million in assistance. Locally, Greene County was flooded with grants, to businesses such as Cone-E Island Ice Cream in Catskill, GNH Lumber in Windham, Story's Nursery in Freehold, and the Zadock Pratt Museum in Prattsville. A half hour collage of scenes and sounds from theatre project currently in development at The Theatre Center in Toronto Canada. The project centers around Boblo Island a piece of land in the Detriot river with an incredible history, now virtually abandoned and the future sight of an elite gated community the island was once the last stop on the underground railroad, used for rum running during prohibition, and for decades was the home of a large amusement park that now lies in ruins. Through the magic of radio waves Boblo Island Redux explores parts of this history and the traces of memory they leave behind. Nathan Mayberg writes in the Register Star the Galvan Foundation proposal for a homeless shelter located at State and Seventh streets in Hudson got the go-ahead from the Columbia County Board of Supervisors Human Services Committee, Wed., July 18. The proposal calls for Galvan to maintain a 37-room shelter for the county's single homeless population with case management services provided by the Mental Health Association of Columbia-Greene Counties. The county will enter into a five-year agreement with Galvan at the cost of $611,000 for the first year. The county currently houses its homeless population in motels. Mayor William Hallenbeck Jr. and Common Council President Don Moore attended the committee meeting, and voiced support for the project. Supervisor Ellen Thurston [a WGXC programmer], Democrat of Hudson, was the lone dissenting vote on the proposal. Citing declining homeless numbers and a lack of public input on the plan, she said it was “premature” to enter into a long-term lease agreement. The matter now moves on for a vote by the full board. Susan Campriello writes in The Daily Mail Tom Rogers Auto Service of Cairo has inked a temporary, 30-day contract with the Cairo-Durham Central School District to maintain the district's fleet of buses, while officials put the full-year maintenance agreement out to bid. Last week, the Cairo-Durham Board of Education reversed its June decision to enter into a one-year intermunicipal agreement with the Greenville Central School District for bus maintenance services, Questions were raised over the actual savings associated with the new arrangement. Rogers has held the Cairo-Durham bus maintenance contract for nearly 60 years. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

Brian Nearing writes in the Times Union a new report from Earthworks Oil & Gas Accountability Project, a group against high-impact hydraulic fracturing, asserts that New York State lags in inspecting oil and gas wells, and is not ready to handle what could be a deluge of wells if it allows natural gas hydraulic fracturing. The group compared New York's inspection and enforcement history for petroleum wells to states where fracking is already in use — Pennsylvania, Texas, Ohio, New Mexico and Colorado, and found one in four of the state's 10,134 wells were inspected by Dept. of Environmental Conservation during 2010. This percentage was far less than Texas, New Mexico or Colorado, but superior to Pennsylvania or Ohio. During the last decade, the number of wells in New York climbed from about 9,000 to nearly 10,500, while the number of inspections dropped from nearly 3,500 a year to about 2,500 a year. On "@Issue" at 10 a.m., Wed., July 18, Hudson Mayor William Hallenbeck, Jr. explained the Hudson Police Department's use of a SWAT team to evict the Furgary Boat Club from the Hudson waterfront Mon., July 16. Speaking with host Victor Mendolia (who is head of the city's Democrat party), Republican Hallenbeck explained the police had received reports of firearms, and had talked with people close to the group who were concerned about "suicide by cop." He also said that there are still discussions under way to resolve the situation so that at least some of the Furgary Boat Club buildings could remain in some public way. Susan Campriello reports in The Daily Mail in an effort to economize, Greenville town officials have begun the process of combining the duties of town clerk and tax collector into one office. Both offices now carry a two-year term. A public hearing on the consolidation will be conducted at the end of August. The matter then moves on for voter approval with a referendum on the November ballot, according to Supervisor Paul Macko. If approved, the offices will be combined in Jan. 2014. Tom Casey reports in the Register Star the Hudson Common Council passed a local law Tues., July 17, to ban smoking within all city-owned and operated parks. Violators will be fined $250. The law takes effect immediately. The Council also approved the so-called, "dog poop law." That law increases the fine for failure to clean up after a dog from $50 up to $250 for a first offense. The fine doubles with each subsequent offense -- up to $500 the second time around, and to $1,000 for the third. The National Weather Service in Albany issued an Air Quality Alert for the entire WGXC listening area from 11 a.m. through 11 p.m. Tuesday because of high ozone layers. Predicted temperatures in the 90s Tuesday should make the situation worse. On Sun., July 15, U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson spoke with Jimmy Vielkind of Capitol Confidential and expressed his position on the prospect of opening New York up for hydraulic fracturing. “I’m not in a position to support the governor’s plan until I see that we have a regulatory process that protects the water and the air, that deals with waste water, that deals with chemicals," Gibson said. "I believe we’re a country that can do hard things…if we continue to work hard we ought to be able to find a way to do this safely, but until they find a way, I’m not in a position to support it.” Gibson said he believed the chemicals in any fluid used for hydrofracking should be disclosed, and added, “I don’t think they should have exemptions from the Clean Water Act. I don’t think that’s right.” The Kinderhook Republican will face Democrat challenger Julian Schreibman of Stone Ridge in November, to represent the 19th Congressional District. During the debate with primary opponent Joel Tyner in June, Schreibman said he stood "100 percent" in opposition to fracking. Read the full post at Capitol Confidential.

More than 100 people listened as Gibson spoke of the importance of controlling costs he said impede growth in the forms of taxes, government regulation, health care and energy. WGXC has learned the Hudson Police Department carried out the eviction of the North Dock Tin Boat Association from the land it occupies on the eastern shore of the Hudson River very early Monday morning. An unspecified number of people present at the club when HPD officers arrived left without incident. The city Department of Public Works then began the job of erecting a fence around the perimeter of the North Bay property. WGXC will continue to follow this story throughout the day.

UPDATE (12:06 p.m.): Tom Casey is now reporting in the Register Star city DPW workers and an HPD S.W.A.T. team arrived at the property at 3 a.m. Mon., July 16, and removed the last remaining members of the North Dock Tin Boat Association from the shacks. DPW then erected a fence to prevent entrance onto the property. In a statement released by the police later in the day, the department explained its use of the special operations unit, saying the decision was made based on reports that "one of the subjects was armed and had made threats that he would kill the police if they came to remove him." DPW workers will continue to work at the location throughout the day, installing new locks on shack doors and boarding and locking windows to keep people out. UPDATE (2:10 p.m.): Tiffany Martin Hamilton, a fourth-generation Furgarian, commented on the eviction and what's ahead in a statement to WGXC Monday afternoon:

I am looking at today's events as the close of this chapter in the story of the Furgary. Today is a new day, and it will be our stepping off point for future discussions with the Mayor and his staff. Several members of the Furgary and I met last Thursday [July 12] with the Mayor, his aide, the city attorney and the President of the Common Council to discuss several options. The most viable and well-perceived was the thought of opening up the cabins for use by the public in a park setting, as is often done in state parks. While this isn't the Furgary that its key holders are so accustomed to, it seems to me to be a far better option than demolition. I, as well as many others who have worked side by side with me in this process, believe that preservation to honor the history and significance of the location is extremely important. Hudson has made some terrible moves in the past, demolishing buildings and even entire neighborhoods for the sake of "progress." We now look back on most of those projects as colossal mistakes. I hope we're not having a discussion twenty years from now about what a shame it was that the city chose to demolish something as unique and special as the Furgary Boat Club. I remain optimistic that we will be able to strike a balance with the city.
