4 a.m.: Václav Havel: Audience This is the legendary 1978 samizdat recording of "Audience," starring Václav Havel (1936-2011) as Vanek and Pavel Landovský as Sládek. It was recorded by folk singer Vladimír Merta in his Prague apartment in 1978 and published by the Šafrán label, ran from Upsalla, Sweden, by Czech exiles Jirí Pallas and Jaroslav Hutka, both signatories of the Charter 77. The LP was unofficially circulated in Czechoslovakia and many Czechs knew parts of the play by heart after 1978, despite the fact any Havel publication was banned in the country since the 1968 Soviet invasion. Havel himself was briefly imprisoned in 1978 and continuously from June 1979 to January 1984. This is a rare example of a record which proved dangerous for its authors, as well as for the entire Soviet system. Czech record company Bonton officially published the recording for the first time in 1990, soon after Havel became president of Czechoslovakia in December 1989. Václav Havel and Pavel Landovský in "Audience" (as it is titled in Czech) belongs to a trilogy of partly autobiographical one-act plays also known as the Vanek Trilogy, comprising Audience (1975), Protest (1978) and Mistake (1983), based on Havel’s experience of being forced to work in a brewery and under constant harassment from the Communist regime. Taking place in the brewery’s office, Audience is a meeting between the brewery’s manager Sládek and employee Vanek. While the manager is clearly opening too many beers and inducing into binge drinking, it is less clear what he wants from Vanek, though it ultimately transpires he has a deal to offer: a promotion agaisnt informations on Vanek’s political activities.

The National Weather Service predicts two to four more inches of snow may fall in the Hudson Valley Saturday, mainly after 10 a.m. High near 25. Low around 16 with continued snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible Saturday night.

Ariel Zangla writes in the Daily Freeman the Greene County Legislature this month presented the annual Ellen Rettus Planning Achievement Awards for distinguished service, innovative design and community improvement. Recipients included Eric Rasmussen of Cairo for distinguished service in the area of land conservation and education; the Cairo Public Library Board of Trustees for community and main street revitalization; Windham Mountain Partners for the innovative design of its expansion plan, "Destination Windham" and Jim Eisel of Prattsville for community improvement. Gail Heinsohn reports in the Register Star the tax rates in the town and village of Chatham will nearly triple next year. A misunderstanding and miscalculation involving Town Supervisor Jesse Degroodt and Town Assessor Dan Horst led to the higher than expected tax levy increase. The Town Board voted to raise the tax rate by 4.8 percent as part of the budgeting process, but when the tax bills were finalized the actual increase was 14.1 percent. DeGroodt was alerted to the higher rate when the bills were received by the Town Clerk's Office. The board’s first course of action is to assess the situation, DeGroodt told the paper. Photo from Windham Mountain Facebook page.[/caption]The Catskills finally got a big snowfall Thursday, with Windham Mountain reporting over 14" of snow, Hunter Mountain over a foot of new snow, while Catamount Ski in Hillsdale added five inches. Even better for the long holiday weekend, another couple of inches should fall on the mountains. Windham has skiing and riding on 31 trails (20 groomed) and 170 skiable acres serviced by eight lifts from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. this weekend. Hunter has eight lifts and 41 trails open, and fireworks on New Year's Eve. Catamount has 13 of 33 trails open, with four of six lifts running. Click here to play WGXC Ski Report.

Joe Gentile is reporting in The Daily Mail the Hudson River remains polluted and unsafe for swimming. A new report conducted by the environmental group Riverkeeper found the rate of sewage contamination of the Hudson River Estuary during a recent five-year period was three times higher than what was reported for beaches nationwide during that same period. The group sampled from sites located between Troy and New York harbor. Several measurements taken over time at the Hudson Boat Launch and at the Athens Sewage Treatment Plant exceeded Environmental Protection Agency acceptable levels. Several snow emergencies have been reported in the WGXC listening area. Please check back for updates.

The Town of Greenport declared a snow emergency beginning 12:00 a.m., Thurs., Dec. 27, lasting until 12:00 a.m. Fri., Dec. 28. There will be no parking on any street. Cars parked on the streets during this time will be ticketed and towed.

The Village of Athens has issued a snow emergency effective 7 p.m., Wed., Dec. 26. All snow emergency laws will be in effect until further notice.

The Village of Catskill has issued a snow emergency effective at 8:00 p.m., Wed., Dec. 26. All vehicles should be parked on the odd side of village streets from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. at which point vehicles should be moved to the even side of the street. Vehicles should continue to switch sides of the street every 12 hours, until the snow emergency has been cancelled. Effective also Wednesday, no parking on Main Street from Greene Street to Summit Avenue beginning at 8:00 p.m., to ensure that Main Street is one of the first streets cleared of snow. Residents who usually park on Main Street should utilize the municipal parking lots.

Jimmy Vielkind is reporting in the Times Union Democrat Cecilia Tkaczyk (KAT-chik) has filed an appeal from a Montgomery County judge's decision to invalidate 333 absentee and affidavit ballots in the 46th state Senate race against Republican George Amedore. Tkaczyk contends in court papers filed Wed., Dec. 26, a series of hyper-technical mistakes by voters led to the invalidation of hundreds of ballots. Amedore was certified as the winner of the race by acting Supreme Court Justice Guy Tomlinson last week. Amedore's campaign will file a formal reply to the appeal by Fri., Dec. 28. The case will be argued in Albany, Jan. 7, two days before the state Senate is scheduled for formally convene. The outcome of the race could effect which party controls the Senate. Melanie Lekocevic is reporting in The Daily Mail Democrat Chris Pfister has officially announced his run for Athens village mayor. Pfister is currently serving out the end of a three-year term representing Athens on the Greene County Legislature. Current Athens Mayor Andrea Smallwood, also a Democrat, has not yet indicated if she intends to run for re-election. Pfister previously served eight years on the village’s Board of Trustees as both a trustee and as deputy mayor under Smallwood. Pfister will be replaced in the Legislature by Republican Gene Hatton, Jan. 1. As mayor, Pfister said he will focus on providing the right climate for business development, and work to preserve the historic and unique character of the village. Gail Heinsohn reports in the Chatham Courier the Ghent Planning Board now has 62 days to rule on the pending proposal to relocate the Price Chopper supermarket from Chatham Plaza into a new 45,000-square-foot space located nearby. During a recent meeting of the board, attorneys and engineers presented various arguments on the proposal, which has been pending for more than two years. At issue is whether the new 24-hour facility is in keeping with the character of Chatham village. The board can rule immediately, or take time to study the proposal within the 62-day deadline. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning from 7 p.m., Wednesday to 7 p.m., Thursday for the WGXC listening area. Moderate to heavy amounts of snow, sleet and light freezing rain are expected Wednesday night into Thursday. Between 8 and 16 inches of snow and sleet are possible overnight, with the highest amounts expected across higher elevations. Snow is expected this evening. Heavy at times by late tonight. Sleet and freezing rain will mix in around daybreak, Thursday, and continue through the morning, turning to snow showers in the afternoon. Temperatures will be in the mid-20s tongith, warming to the lower 30s by Thursday. Heavy accumulations of snow, sleet and light accumulations of ice will make for dangerous travel late Wednesday into Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Albany says the Hudson Valley will awake to a White Christmas Tuesday morning. One to two inches of snow are expected, beginning after 10 p.m. Mon., Dec. 24, ending before 10 a.m. Christmas morning. Low temperature around 26 overnight, with a high of 35 on Tuesday.

Kyle Adams reported in The Daily Mail the Federal Emergency Management Agency reported Fri., Dec. 21, Greene County is eligible for disaster aid under the FEMA Assistance Program, to aid in recovery from Superstorm Sandy. Greene County is one of 15 counties statewide to qualify for infrastructure repair, emergency work and cleanup disbursement. The county suffered damage due to tidal flooding in low-lying areas like Catskill point and areas in Coxsackie and Athens. Flooding also damaged some water treatment systems in the county. Embattled Hudson High School Principal Thomas Gavin has sued to get his job back. Gavin recently filed an Article 78 action in Columbia County Supreme Court naming the Hudson school district, its Board of Education and Superintendent Maria J. Suttmeier as respondents. The tenured administrator petitioned the court to compel the district to either charge him, or restore him to his position. Gavin has been on paid suspension since Oct. 2, despite being cleared of alleged misconduct by an outside investigator. Read the full story at unmuffled.

Nathan Mayberg reported in the Register Star. the Columbia County Board of Supervisors has appointed a new director of public health. Angella Timothy will replace Nancy Winch, who retired last month. Timothy has approximately 20 years of health care management experience. She is the former associate administrator of Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center in the Bronx and Acting Chief Executive Officer of Schenectady's Hometown Health Centers. Jamie Carlson reported in The Daily Mail the Cairo-Durham Board of Education voted Thurs., Dec. 20, to divide the district's elementary grades into to two separate schools. One building will house kindergarten through second grade, while the second building will accommodate third through fifth. The decision was made as a cost-cutting measure. The board vetoed a controversial shuttle bus plan, which would have transported students from school to school keeping some students on buses for extended periods of time. 3 p.m. From the Archives: The Seven Poor Travellers Inspired by the 16th Century Charity House called The Six Poor Travellers House in Rochester England by Richard Watts in 1579 to provide free lodging for poor travellers, Charles Dickens wrote himself into the story as the Seventh Traveller. The Seven Poor Travelers is the fifth Christmas number, from 1854, of his journal Household Words. This story was read by WBAI producer Frank Coffee on December 28, 1968. Dr. Chung Ohun Lee, the Executive Director and guiding spiritural teacher of Won Dharma Center in Claverack, NY and Won Buddhism of Manhattan. Lee is a recognized international leader in inter-religious dialogue and cooperation, the Co-President of Religions for Peace, the largest internaitonal interfaith organization, and has represented Won Buddhism at the United Nations since 1992. "Baconathon and Candy Day: A Youth Holiday Special," gets an airing, produced by the participants (ages 3-13) of the "We Make Radio!" workshop held at the Hudson Area Library on December 12 and 19. Jimmy Vielkind is reporting in the Times Union many Democratic state lawmakers, led by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, are anxious to tweak New York's gun laws after the recent shootings in Newtown, Conn., and they are contemplating a special session to do so as early as next week. Cuomo pushed to bring legislators to the Capitol this week, according to media reports, but the idea was rejected by a top negotiator for Senate Republicans because it was believed the Senators could not be rallied on such short notice. The governor's aides are now looking at Fri., Dec. 28, as a possible day to bring lawmakers back to Albany. The Legislature is scheduled to return to regular session in January. NY-Alert is reporting state Route 22, between Route 203 and East Hill Road in Austerlitz, is closed due to a downed utility pole. That section of road is expected to reopen by early afternoon.
