Nathan Mayberg reported in the Register Star Mike Winnie, a former Albany County Sheriff’s Department sergeant and Stockport Police Chief, has announced his intention to run for Columbia County Sheriff. He will seek endorsement by the Columbia County Democratic Committee. Current Sheriff David Harrison will retire at the end of the year. Winnie is a 30-year veteran of law enforcement. As sheriff, Winnie said, he would expand the D.A.R.E. program to more grades in schools, to educate students about the dangers of drugs and substance abuse. He said that drugs are still an issue. He said expanding DWI enforcement was also a priority. Winnie also said he believes the NY SAFE Act went too far. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Kyle Adams reported in The Daily Mail the town of Cairo is moving forward with plans to drill a new well in the Angelo Canna Town Park to allow for future commercial development. Town Supervisor Ted Banta said the current water source is a shallow well system. An initial estimate puts the cost of the project at $29,000. Banta hopes the new well will expand water coverage to commercial areas along Routes 23 and 32 and expand the business district on Main Street. Once the State Environmental Quality Review is complete, test wells will be drilled. If all goes well, work should be underway in the next few months. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

The Associated Press reported Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York legislative leaders met Sun., Mar. 17, in preparation of what they hope will be an announcement Monday of an on-time budget. The parties, however, claim they are a good distance apart in the closed-door talks. Sticking points include whether to raise the minimum wage, whether to adopt business tax cuts and the proposal to extend a so-called temporary income tax increase for the second time. The budget would increase state spending just under two percent. The 2013-14 state budget is due April 1. Read the full Associated Press story in the Wall Street Journal.

More than 100 people filled Shiloh Baptist Church on Warren St., in Hudson Sat., Mar. 16, to hear presenters offer their views on the current state of the Black community in Columbia County. The forum was the inaugural event organized by the newly established Staley B. Keith Social Justice Center. Among the information presented: Blacks represent 4 percent of the county's workforce and 13 percent of city's; and, the Hudson City School District graduated less than half of its black students in 2010. Staley B. Keith was a former Hudson supervisor and alderman, and past president of the Columbia/Green NAACP. He died in August. The center's mission is to help eliminate persistent poverty and to provide leadership opportunities for black males. Dr. Alice Green, Executive Director of the Center for Law and Justice in Albany, was the keynote speaker at the event.

W. T. Eckert in The Daily Mail reports that Greene County volunteer fire companies can take free classes from the Greene County Amateur Radio Club to pass a test for an amateur radio license from the Federal Communications Commission. The classes are already up and running, but interested parties can still sign up for the homework assignments, email assistance, and two days of in-person training, followed by the exam. “Several days after the course you are an amateur radio operator,” Radio Amateur Communication Emergency Radio Officer Len Signoretti told The Daily Mail, “and you can keep the license from the FCC in your pocket for 10 years and you become a HAM [amateur radio operator] and then hopefully become a member of the Greene County Amateur Radio Club and then of course Greene County Aries and RACES.” Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

Jim Planck reports in The Daily Mail the Catskill Teachers Association and the Catskill Board of Education have agreed on a new contract. The two-year agreement will run through June 2014. District teachers had been working without a contract since June. The compact included a one percent salary increase and changes to the benefits package. CTA President James Maccaline said teachers agreed to the elimination of some of the more costly health plans. Maccaline said the CTA believes the agreement is fair. Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Farrell said the contract benefits both the staff and the district. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

Patricia Doxsey reports in the Daily Freeman a multimillion-dollar lawsuit has been filed against Four Brothers Pizza, a chain of nine pizza restaurants with locations in Dutchess and Columbia counties. The case was brought by the Workers Justice Center of New York in federal court on March 6. It seeks upwards of $2 million for workers denied proper compensation by the company. It is alleged the company forced some of their employees to work long hours, refused to pay minimum wage, denied workers overtime and used threats and intimidation to prevent workers from reporting the violations to authorities. A representative of the Justice Center called the claims made by the workers, "extremely strong." Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.

Barbara Reina reports in the Register Star voters in the village of Valatie will choose between incumbent Gary Strevell and challenger Diane Argyle in the race for mayor next week. Strevell is running on the Valatie Experience Party line, while Argyle is the Open Door Party candidate. Voters will also choose between Lisa Hill, Philip Bickerton and Frank Bevens for two open seats on the village board. Argyle has been a resident of the village for 40 years. She is a retired technician and shop steward for Verizon. Argyle is the former chair of the Valatie Zoning Board of Appeals and former member of the Town of Kinderhook Trails Committee. Strevell is a five-term incumbent. He is the president of A-magine Business Services Inc., Strevell served as a village trustee from 1999 to 2003 before becoming mayor. Voting is noon to 9 p.m., Tues., Mar. 19 at the village hall, located at 3053 Main St. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Joe Gentile reports in the Register Star the new contract between the city of Hudson and Animalkind was taken up by Common Council, at a meeting held Mon., Mar. 11. Under that agreement the non-profit's annual fee to spay and neuter the city's cats was specified to increase by $2,000. Third Ward Alderman John Friedman questioned why the pending resolution did not provide the number of felines the group was committed to treat. The discussion stalled after aldermen questioned why last year's contract with Animalkind was not finalized. Common Council President Don Moore confessed he failed to catch the contract snafu, in part because Animalkind's application was delayed after it was forced to relocate due to a fire in its Warren Street space. Kyle Adams writes in The Daily Mail nearly 20 years of environmental remediation work may soon be coming to an end at the former Becker Electronics Manufacturing site in East Durham. The final stage of remediation at the Superfund site will likely be finished by early April. The site was identified after a significant amount of hazardous chemicals from the former electronics plant were found to have compromised the groundwater at the site, along with several private drinking water wells nearby. The site is currently approved for restricted use, and serves as a warehouse for Tip Top Furniture. The property is now owned by Tip Top's owner, Kenneth Dudley, through the Michael J. Nathan Mayberg reports in the Register Star the state Senate has passed a budget resolution calling for the removal of approximately $36 million in funding from the Governor's Executive Budget proposal earmarked for the implementation of the NY SAFE Act. On Mon., Mar. 11, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said he will not entertain such a proposal as part of budget negotiations with state legislators. “I rule that out,” Cuomo said. State Senator Kathleen Marchione said she was in favor of cutting funds to support the gun control legislation. The amount targeted by the resolution included funds for a new statewide gun permit database and for police agencies to handle new permit applications. William J. Kemble is reporting in the Daily Freeman the Catskill Town Board has approved names for two roads to accommodate Greene County 911 requirements that locations are clearly designated for emergency calls. The names were adopted following recent public hearings. Town officials said one of the changes was made to avoid confusion among two Hill Roads in the town. One is located in Cementon, the other is in Palenville. The road in Palenville has been renamed Ben Hill Road after the first person to build on the road 25 years ago. Officials also established a shared driveway as Nappa Lane. It is located near Cairo Junction Road and state Route 23B. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.

John Mason reports in the Register Star Germantown Deputy Supervisor Joel Craig, a Republican, recently announced his candidacy for town supervisor. Current Town Supervisor Roy Brown, also a Republican, announced in January he will not seek re-election in November. Craig will seek the endorsement of Republican voters at the spring caucus. Republican Committee Chairman George Sharpe Sr. said the committee members -- Sharpe, David Crawford, Bruce Bohnsack and Joseph Phelan -- have been meeting with Craig. The committee said in a press release it was pleased to have a strong candidate for the position of town supervisor. Craig has served on the Town Board since 2008. He has been employed by the Dutchess County Office of Central and Information Systems for the past 26 years. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail Cairo-Durham school district Board of Education hosted a forum Thurs., Mar. 7, to address questions and concerns about the upcoming grade realignment plan. That plan calls for housing grades K-2 in Durham Elementary School and grades 3-5 in the Cairo Elementary School. The forum featured representatives from the Lansingburgh school district and the Cobleskill-Richmondville school district. Similar realignment  plans were recently implemented in those districts. Cairo-Durham Board President Greg Koerner-Fox emphasized in his comments the decision-making phase of the process has passed and the district is now in the implementation phase. School representatives answered questions from community members about academics, operations and maintenance, transportation and finances.
