Barbara Reina reports in the Register Star Diane Argyle soundly defeated longtime Valatie Mayor Gary Strevell Tues., Mar. 19, to become the first woman elected as mayor of the village. Argyle’s victory ends Strevell's five consecutive two-year terms in the village's top spot. Incumbent Philip Bickerton and newcomer Frank Bevens won the two open village trustee seats. Argyle thanked supporters Tuesday night. She said, "Being chosen as the first woman mayor is something special." Argyle ran as an advocate for transparency and greater engagement by village government. She hopes to see the village board more involved in municipal decision-making.
