Laura Hadden and Tennessee Watson are at Wave Farm this spring as the 2013 season’s first Artists-in-Residence. Hadden and Watson’s project Wage/Working addresses the issues of income inequality and the concept of wage through a time-based transmission installation and a radio broadcast series on free103point9’s WGXC 90.7-FM. During their time in Greene County, these two accomplished radio producers and artists will be collecting stories and interviews with workers in Greene and Columbia counties regarding their jobs and their relationship to their work. The Alternative Media Conference took place at Goddard College from June 17th through June 20. The original Alternative Media Conference brought over 1,700 innovative FM radio DJs, a new breed of record company promoters, underground newspaper reporters, Freek Brothers cartoonist Gilbert Shelton, Baba Ram Dass, Rolling Stone photographer Robert Altman, 60s radical Jerry Rubin, Founder of Mad Magazine Harvey Kurtzman, the Hog Farm Collective and many others all the way to Plainfield. This conference covered topics including women in the media, black-oriented radio and low-budget films. Atlantic Records donated 3,000 dollars and shipped in Dr. John, Cactus and the J. Geils Band to put on concerts. Many conference attendees went on to exciting media careers, including Hendrik Hertzberg, a senior editor at the New Yorker, and Danny Goldberg, whose company has managed the careers of rockers Nirvana, the Allman Brothers and Bonnie Raitt. The conference is remembers as the birth of alternative media and continues to be held as a time that was rich in urgency for change. Goddard College reconvened the conference on May 18th, 2013 in order to review what had happened in the 43 years since the original conference was held but also to bring people together to plan and imagine what the next 40 years will bring. As part of the conference the organizer of the original conference, Larry Yurdin, gave this history presentation with archival slides to the audience of 170 people gathered in the Haybarn Theatre at Goddard College in Plainfield, VT.

But this interview by Francis Roberts was right on the heels of his 1962 novel Something Wicked This Way Comes. This talk is appropriately called The World of Ray Bradbury as he clearly traces the motivation for his unique writing style from his childhood to the present. In this next speech delivered at the International Colloquium on Mars in December 1973, Bradbury reflects on the literary and visionary masters before him that inspired him as a child to dream. He implores each of us to set popular culture aside for a moment so that we can focus on our own dreams. It is these dreams that will help us evolve here on Earth and One day.... navigate the stars.

Take a break and join us for the unveiling of the Wage/Working project's jukebox-based installation, featuring stories and sounds from the working lives of residents of Greene and Columbia counties. Community members are also invited to bring their own CDs of locally produced sounds to trade for a CD that was in the original jukebox. The CDs can include any audio (music, interviews, etc.) as long as it originated in Greene or Columbia county, and will be considered for inclusion in the Wage/Working jukebox, which will be located for the next six months in the Cairo Public Library's Teen Room.

Wage/Working addresses the issues of income inequality and the concept of wage through a time-based transmission installation and radio broadcast series. During their two-month residency Hadden and Watson collected stories and interviews with workers in the Greene and Columbia counties community regarding their jobs and their relationship to their work. These stories were edited to a length, corresponding with the amount of time it takes each interviewee to earn $1, creating an inverse relationship between monetary value and time.

The Wage/Working project was created by Tennessee Watson & Laura Hadden as a part of an AIR Live Interactive Residency at free103point9 Wave Farm, and WGXC 90.7-FM in Acra, NY. Financial support was provided, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

From Free Speech Radio News: Today, a four-day-long meeting on drone technology and warfare opens in Atlanta, Georgia. Organizers of the 2013 International Conference on Unmanned Aircraft Systems say it brings together government leaders, academics and engineers from the US and across the world, including from Brazil, South Korea, Italy, Spain and Croatia. Private drone manufacturers and military representatives are also listed as financial sponsors or attendees. Local activists are launching protests to coincide with the conference. They’re calling for an end to targeted assassinations and drone attacks abroad, and drone surveillance in the US. He continues "to be a major figure."[1] He has even been called a "super musician" and the New York Times has mentioned that he "qualifies as an iconoclast."'

The initiative is sponsored by Intel, supported by the White House Office of Digital Strategy and a range of other federal and state agencies and corporations. About 90 hacking events are taking place across the country, from Alaska to Florida. The aim, according to the organizers’ website, is “to promote transparency, participation and collaboration between governments, companies and citizens.” The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is also taking part by releasing tens of thousands of pages of files detailing torture of detainees by the Bush administration. To tell us more, we spoke with Alex Abdo, staff attorney with the ACLU’s National Security Project."

Classical music has, occasionally, caused riots among crowds hearing new works for the first time. Daniel Auber 1830 opera "La muette de Portic sparked the Belgian Revolution. Igor Stravinsky's 1931 ballet "The Rite of Spring" may be the most famous case of a rioting crowd. From Wikipedia: "On the evening of the 29 May the theatre was packed: Gustav Linor reported, "Never...has the hall been so full, or so resplendent; the stairways and the corridors were crowded with spectators eager to see and to hear". The evening began with Les Sylphides, in which Nijinsky and Karsavina danced the main roles. The Rite followed; there is general agreement among eyewitnesses and commentators that the disturbances in the audience began during the Introduction, and grew into a crescendo when the curtain rose on the stamping dancers in "Augurs of Spring". Marie Rambert, who was working as an assistant to Nijinsky, recalled later that it was soon impossible to hear the music on the stage. In his autobiography, Stravinsky writes that the derisive laughter that greeted the first bars of the Introduction disgusted him, and that he left the auditorium to watch the rest of the performance from the stage wings. The demonstrations, he says, grew into "a terrific uproar" which, along with the on-stage noises, drowned out the voice of Nijinsky who was shouting the step numbers to the dancers.
