Matthew Hamilton in Capitol Confidential rounds up reaction to President Donald Trump's ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program which could result in 42,000 children who have grown up in New York state being kicked out of the country. Reactions from New Yorkers were not positive. More than 300 people gathered Sept. 5 soon after the announcement, outside U.S. Rep. John Faso’s Kingston office, to show support for the program. Faso, in Washington D.C., released a statement saying, "I support Congress addressing DACA legislatively and believe that Congress must address this issue within the next six months. This is why I sent a letter to Speaker Ryan last week urging him to address and protect DACA legislatively. In fact, I am a co-sponsor of two bills that maintain DACA – H.R. 496, the Bar Removal of Individuals who Dream and Grow our Economy Act or “BRIDGE” Act, and H.R. 1468, the Recognizing America’s Children Act." Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who previously promised to sue if Trump rescinded DACA, said in Harlem that the president was, "just feeding the beast of bigotry red meat." Sen. Chuck Schumer Tweeted, "These hardworking #DREAMers & their contributions are vital to our economy & biz who will be hurt if this order stands," and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said in a statement of Trump, "He is needlessly targeting children who know no other country as home than America." Read the full story in Capitol Confidential.

Emilia Teasdale reports in The Columbia Paper that the Kinderhook Town Board heard from more residents at an Aug. 23 workshop meeting who don't want electricity generated by the sun on a large scale in their town. An Aug. 7 public hearing filled the meeting room in the Martin H. Glynn Building, and was closed afterwards. But board members heard from a few more residents Aug. 23 about the issue, and they also did not want solar farms in Kinderhook. Councilperson Patsy Leader noted that the Planning Board has discretion to waive requirements in an application, including those the town was including in its solar law. Supervisor Pat Grattan, agreed, saying, “We trust the Planning Board.” The next Kinderhook town meeting is at 7 p.m., Monday, September 11. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.

Audrey Matott reports in The Greenville Pioneer that residents along Greenville's new sewer line have until the end of the year to hook up to the service. After a Aug. 21 public hearing, the town board passed Sewer Use Local Law #2. There is no fee to hook up before Dec. 31, but most residents will have to pay a contractor to hook up the service. The town will also extend the sewer along Route 81 and Route 26A, but residents there won't have to hook-up for at least a year-and-a-half.

Columbia-Greene Media track where there are primary elections next Tuesday, Sept. 12 in Columbia County. In Hudson, Democrats and Independence Party members have candidates to choose from for Common Council President. Additionally, Democrats in the 3rd Ward have two supervisor candidates, and in the 4th ward, Democrats and Independence Party members will choose a supervisor candidate, and Democrats in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th wards have two alderman candidates on the ballot. There are also Independence Party primary elections in the towns of Clermont and Greenport. Otherwise, wait until November in Columbia County. Matthew Hamilton is reporting at Capitol Confidential in a Siena College poll released Tue., Sep. 5, found voters now have a more favorable view of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo than they did in July, but his job performance rating remains negative. Overall, 56 percent of registered voters have a favorable view of the governor, up four points from 52 percent in July. Still, only 38 percent of upstaters have a favorable view of the governor, down from 44 percent in July. However, New York City and suburban voters’ views of the governor improved in the latest poll, exceeding 60 percent in both areas. Of those responding, 48 percent said they would vote to re-elect the governor to a third term next year. Forty-four percent said they would prefer someone else. Daniel Zuckerman is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Stewart’s in Leeds is looking to expand, and is exploring the possibility of moving across Route 23B from its current location to do so. The move would create an opportunity for the convenience store chain to expand and improve the flow inside and outside the shop, Stewart’s Shops spokesperson Maria D’Ameila said. If the project moves forward as planned, construction would begin in 2018, she said. Greene County and the Greene County Industrial Development Agency are currently in the process of taking possession of the property located across the street from the existing store, the site of the former Quality Inn. “Stewart’s is a possibility,” IDA Executive Director Rene VanSchaack said. “A hotel and a restaurant are the absolute top priorities for us.” Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.

Lauren Sanforth is reporting in the Times Union Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said Mon., Sep. 4, they will sue to protect those who are currently covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy if President Donald Trump ends the program. The Trump administration has hinted it is planning to end the Obama-era program in six months. A formal announcement is possible Tuesday. The program grants work permits to undocumented immigrants who arrived in the country as children. Read the full story in the Times Union.

Diane Valden is reporting in The Columbia Paper the saga of Salvatore Cascino [kah-SHEE-no] and more than 9,600 cubic yards of illegally dumped solid waste continues. The 77-year-old serial scofflaw was back in front of Columbia County Acting Supreme Court Judge Jonathan Nichols last month, but once again failed to convince the court he had obeyed its order and removed the offending waste from his 300-acre property located on the east side of Route 22 in Copake. The 77-year-old resident of Larchment, Westchester County, was found guilty of criminal and civil contempt by Nichols in February 2016, and he has now been locked up in the Columbia County Jail for more than a year. Nichols heard testimony from Cascino's son, Peter Cascino, Jose Aguilera, the manager at Copake Valley Farm, and Joseph Haight, one of the truck drivers who took part in the hauling operation. Cascino's attorney also called Copake Town Supervisor Jeff Nayer to testify that he had never seen trucks removing material from the property, but he did see that piles of waste had been excavated. In the end, the evidence proved less than convincing, and Nichols ordered Cascino back to jail. Cascino is due back in court on November 8. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.
