The Associated Press reports the U.S. Senate passed a half-trillion-dollar farm bill Thurs., June 21. The legislation cuts farm subsidies and land conservation spending, but protects sugar growers and food stamp beneficiaries. In its final version, the bill reduced the food assistance program by $4.5 billion. Food stamp spending has doubled in the past five years, and the program's budget comprised 80 percent of the spending in the five-year bill. New York's Democrat Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer voted for the bill, as did Republican Scott Brown in Massachusetts. Gillibrand and food advocates in New York fought the program reductions. Gillibrand expressed her disappointment with the cuts, Thursday. "Just as important as the health of our agriculture industry — is the health and nutrition of our children and families," she said. The biggest change in the bill comes from eliminating direct payments to farmers whether they plant crops or not. Statewide, Republicans have a primary to decide who will take on incumbent New York junior Senator Kirsten Gillibrand Nov. 6.
• Wendy E. Long, a Manhattan lawyer;
• George Maragos, the Nassau County comptroller;
• Representative Bob Turner, a congressman who represents portions of Brooklyn and Queens.

Statewide, Democrats have primary elections in contested Congressional districts. Locally, in the new District 19 that includes Greene and Columbia counties, as well as many surrounding counties and towns, the primary election will decide who takes on Rep. Chris Gibson (R-Kinderhook).

Really, dirty political tricks happen in the final weekends of campaigns. Take 2009 in Athens:

"In Greene County, the Athens race for Greene County Legislature became the talk of the county last week when Brent Bogardus, the Greene County Republican Party Chairman and Republican Election Commissioner, accused Democratic candidate Chris Pfister of killing a fawn in his backyard in a cruel manner. This surprising charge may have been enough to turn a toss-up race into a 50-vote victory for Pfister over longtime incumbent Ray Brooks."

Joel Tyner, Democrat candidate for New York's 19th Congressional District sat down at the Catskill Community Center Wed., June 20 with WGXC's Ron Diamondstein. They discussed high-impact hydraulic fracturing, reform, and more, in a half-hour discussion. Tyner, currently a five-term Dutchess County legislator, is running in a Democrat primary race Tue., June 26 against Julian Schreibman for a district seat that Chris Gibson (R-Kinderhook) currently represents. The demographics in the new district is slightly more Democratic than the 20th District that Gibson won from Democrat Scott Murphy during the Republican landslide of 2010. Jimmy Vielkind and Greg Barber of the Times Union took a look at congressional candidate Julian Schreibman's finances and found the vast majority of the campaign's major donors live outside the district the Democrat hopes to represent. Donors range from deep-pocketed members of elite New York City law firms to a client whose white-collar criminal conviction Schreibman convinced a judge to throw out. More than 84 percent of Schreibman's $169,460 in contributions from large donors streamed in from outside the new 19th District. Sam Pratt reports on his blog only one donation to Schreibman is recorded from a resident of “the 12534,” from a resident of Greenport. Scenic Hudson has acquired 148 acres in Greenport, directly adjacent to the Hudson South Bay, as part of the organization's ongoing Saving the Land That Matters Most campaign. According to statement released Tues., June 19, the property acquired included 4,200 feet of shoreline along South Bay Creek, which flows into the Hudson River through the South Bay. Nearly 50 acres of the property contain USDA Prime Farmland and Soils of Statewide Significance, according to Scenic Hudson. A large portion of the property is visible from the Olana State Historic Site. Scenic Hudson's Save the Land campaign was launched in 2007, and has resulted in the conservation of nearly 6,300 acres of land in the Hudson Valley. Read the full press release at scenichudson.org.

W.T. Eckert reports in The Daily Mail Greene County legislators are considering legal action against local business Athens on the Hudson to collect $196,000 in unpaid development loans. The loans were made five years ago by the Greene County Legislature as part of county's low-interest Quantum Fund loan program, to fund the renovation and expansion of the former Hagar's Harbor Restaurant and Marina in Athens. The last monthly installment on the loan was made in 2011. The Economic Development Committee unanimously recommended action be taken against the company and its trio of owners to collect the unpaid loans. Michael Novinson reports in the Times Herald-Record the treasurer for Joel Tyner's campaign has resigned and accused the 19th District congressional candidate of misreporting campaign funds. While Tyner's disclosure statements indicated a June 6 balance of $8,500, Misha Fredericks said, in reality the campaign had less than $3,300 in the bank. Asked about Fredericks' allegations Tues., June 19, Tyner accused his former treasurer of character assasination, libel and political sabotage. Fredericks resigned from the campaign following the debate Monday between Tyner and opponent Julian Schreibman, and characterized Tyner's behavior during the event as "atrocious." According to Nathan Mayberg's account in the Register Star, Frederick denied an ulterior motive, and said concerns over more than $5,000 in unaccounted for funds led to her decision to resign. Frederick joined Tyner's campaign as a volunteer in April and immediately found accounting irregularities. Frederick announced her resignation in a letter to campaign staffers and some newspapers, including the Times Union. “I didn’t want to be investigated for embezzlement...,” she said. In other campaign news, David Lombardo reports at Capital Region Scene, retiring Congressman Maurice Hinchey has thrown his support behind Schreibman. In a statement released Tuesday, Hinchey called the Kingston attorney, the progressive voice the Hudson Valley and  Catskill regions deserve. John Mason reports in the Register Star, voters in the Germantown Central School District approved the district's revised 2012-13 budget by a margin of more than 57 percent, Tues., June 19. Voters rejected the Board of Education's first budget proposal, which necessitated a 5.2 percent tax levy increase, last month. The revote attracted 600 voters; 334 voted in favor of the proposal, 149 voted against it. The approved spending plan totaled $13.7 million, and calls for a 1.75 tax levy increase. The New York State Board for Historic Preservation recently announced its recommendation that the North Chatham Historic District in Columbia County be added to the State and National Registers of Historic Places. North Chatham is one of 27 properties and districts nominated statewide. The State Board called North Chatham, "the remarkably intact rural hamlet being largely composed of mid-19th century homes, churches, farms and agricultural and industrial buildings developed along the Chatham & Hillsdale Turnpike, an important overland transportation route which linked North Chatham to outlying areas." Listing these properties on the State and National Registers can assist their owners in revitalizing the structures, making them eligible for various public preservation programs and services, such as matching state grants and state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits. Susan Campriello reports in The Daily Mail the 2012-13 operating budget for Columbia-Greene Community College was approved by the school's board of trustees, Mon., June 18. The $16.8 million spending plan will increase spending and tuition by almost four percent next year. The Greene County Legislature and the Columbia County Board of Supervisors will be asked to approve the proposal in August. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

Billy Shannon reports in The Daily Mail Columbia Memorial Hospital has received more than $2.4 million to update, and possibly purchase, the Greene Medical Arts building in Jefferson Heights. The funds were awarded through the HEAL New York program. CMH is expected to use the money to create a diagnostic treatment center to provide increased diagnostic imaging, primary care and specialty care. Catskill's Cus d'Amato will be a main character in "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth," which director Spike Lee will debut July 31 at a Manhattan theater. D'Amato trained Tyson in Catskill before he was famous, and infamous, as one of the world's toughest prizefighters. The New York Times, Yahoo, and others report that both Lee and Tyson will make their Broadway debut with the former boxer's one-man show. "He was a hardened criminal by the time his mother died when he was 16. It was then that his boxing mentor, Cus d'Amato, helped him turn his back on crime and detention centers and refocus his life around his awesome fighting talent," according to the Yahoo news story.

Barbara Reina reported in the Register Star Valatie village officials are hoping the Village of Kinderhook is still willing to enter into an amended municipal cooperation agreement for the connection of the sewage systems between the two villages, despite Kinderhook Mayor Carol Weaver's decision to postpone a joint meeting last week. "I’ll be very disappointed if they walked away from this,” Valatie Village Mayor Gary Strevell told the paper. The proposal will allow the Kinderhook business district to connect with the Valatie wastewater treatment plant. A "Concerned Citizens" letter posing 30 questions has been sent to Kinderhook officials, requesting a public meeting on the matter. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Susan Campriello reported in The Daily Mail, a month after a fire destroyed its previous location at 298 Main St. in Catskill, the Matthew 25 Food Pantry re-opened Sun., June 17 at its new location. Executive Director Patti Dushane welcomed clients to the pantry, now located at 8 Union Street in a building formerly occupied by a division of Greene County Social Services. The work to prepare the space was done by Dushane and a group of volunteers. Individuals and businesses in the community donated the furniture, refrigerators and freezers, along with the non-perishable food and clothing available for distribution to clients, Dushane told the paper. W.T. Eckert reported in The Daily Mail the Catskill farmers market got off to a fresh start, Sat., June 17, at its new location in the Greene County-owned parking lot behind the former Candyman Chocolates building on Bridge Street. Catskill Region Farmers Market Association President Donna Bonville told the paper she is looking forward to what the future holds. She said the market needs to get established at its new location and will hopefully attract some new vendors, as well. The market has a new vendor offering organic vegetables and a new crafter who makes dog harnesses and dog biscuits. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

Tom Casey reported in the Register Star on the Pride Parade held in Hudson, Sat., June 17. Thousands lined the parade route on Warren Street, from the 7th Street Park to the waterfront, in support of the LGBT community. State Assembly members Didi Barrett and Daniel O’Donnell served as the parade's grand marshals. O'Donnell was the author of the Marriage Equality law passed by the state Legislature one year ago. The parade ended at Hudson Waterfront Park, where musicians, vendors and speeches extended the celebration into the evening.
