North Chatham nominated as historic district

Jun 20, 2012 8:31 am
The New York State Board for Historic Preservation recently announced its recommendation that the North Chatham Historic District in Columbia County be added to the State and National Registers of Historic Places. North Chatham is one of 27 properties and districts nominated statewide. The State Board called North Chatham, "the remarkably intact rural hamlet being largely composed of mid-19th century homes, churches, farms and agricultural and industrial buildings developed along the Chatham & Hillsdale Turnpike, an important overland transportation route which linked North Chatham to outlying areas." Listing these properties on the State and National Registers can assist their owners in revitalizing the structures, making them eligible for various public preservation programs and services, such as matching state grants and state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits.
