The Cruisin' '50s Diner opened in Acra Thu. June 28, and owners Tom Fucito and Sue Holdridge were on the "WGXC Morning Show" Fri., June 29 to discuss the opening. The new diner is very similar to the Johnny Be Goode Diner that closed three years ago in the same location on Route 23 heading toward Windham just before Lang's Motel and the Agroforestry Center. The diner will also have "Fish Fry Fridays," occasional "Car Cruise-Ins" and plenty of burgers and milkshakes, and occasional live performance. Click here to hear interview.

New York 106 District Assemblywoman Didi Barrett (D-Town of Washington) was in WGXC's Hudson studio Thu., June 28, and hosts Christina Malisoff and Doug McGivney asked her opinion on the Ghent power line issue. Protect Ghent, Rep. Chris Gibson (R-Kinderhook) and others have expressed opposition to the New York State Electric & Gas plan to install an 11-mile high-voltage overhead powerline near or through Ghent and Chatham. Gibson recently expressed concern over the potential loss of agricultural lands, the project’s impact on important historic and archeological resources and its visual impact. Barrett agrees, and cites Art Omi, the outdoor sculpture park, as among the most negatively-impacted properties by the proposed powerline. On Thu. June 28, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the individual health-insurance mandate that is at the heart of President Obama’s landmark health-care law, saying the mandate is permissible under Congress’s taxing authority. “Whatever the politics, today’s decision was a victory for people all over this country,” Mr. Obama said in the East Room of the White House, immediately after the decision was announced. “Thanks to today’s decision, all of these benefits and protections will continue.” Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. sided with the majority in voting to uphold the law. Passage of the legislation by Congress in 2010 capped decades of efforts to implement a national program of health care. The legislation is expected to eventually extend health-care coverage to more than 30 million Americans who currently lack it. "I respect that the Supreme Court has spoken, and the solution now must be legislative. We should begin substantive, bipartisan discussion on commonsense reforms – a number of which I have cosponsored or voted on already.”

Julian Schreibman (D-Stone Ridge), candidate for NY-19: “I am hopeful that the Supreme Court’s ruling will get Congress to stop bickering and start working together to build on the current laws and improve health care for all Americans. Like most Upstate New Yorkers I support covering children with pre-existing conditions and stopping insurance companies from dropping your coverage if you get sick. And I believe that it doesn’t matter what party you belong to, we can all come together to support seniors having their benefits strengthened and guaranteed.”

Wendy Long (R-Manhattan), candidate for U.S. Senate: "Although I have yet to read fully all the opinions in this complicated ruling, I respectfully disagree that Obamacare's individual mandate is justified as a tax. But now that the Court majority has called it a ‘tax,’ as New York's next United States Senator, I will work to repeal this tax and replace it with a sensible plan to improve health insurance coverage for all Americans."

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-Brunswick): "I am pleased the Supreme Court reaffirmed the hard fought progress that was made to ensure that no one can be denied coverage for a pre-existing condition, being a woman will no longer be a pre-existing condition, young adults will be covered, prescription drug costs for seniors will be reduced, preventive care including life-saving mammograms will be accessible and that insurance companies can’t cancel their coverage when you get sick."

Brian Nearing reports in the Times Union the state Department of Environmental Conservation gave details of a proposed permit and regulations for natural gas hydraulic fracturing to industry representatives before making those proposals public, according to emails obtained by an environmental group under the state Freedom of Information Act.  The Environmental Working Group said the exchange suggests an overly cozy relationship between the DEC and the natural gas industry. The DEC defended the private release of specific details of its proposed hydrofracking regulations and a stormwater release permit more than a month before that information was released to hydrofracking opponents and the general public. The agency called the communication consistent with state law meant to ensure regulations are not overly burdensome. Read the full story in the Times Union.

The New York state Department of Transportation recently announced paving work has begun on an 11-mile section of Route 66 between Claverack Creek and Route 203 in Columbia County. The construction contractor for this project has begun work, including mobilizing equipment and preparing the site for paving, a 7.5 mile portion of Route 9H between routes 9 and 82 and Route 66 in Columbia County. Six miles of Route 20 from the Rensselaer County line to Route 22 in Columbia County will be resurfaced in August. Work at each site is expected to take between one and four weeks. Lanes will be closed as needed. A limited amount of night work will be performed on the most heavily traveled roads, The projects are funded through the NY Works program.

W.T. Eckert reports in The Daily Mail the potential for growing tall grass as an energy crop will be the topic of discussion among farmers, the Greene County Farm Bureau leadership and representatives of Ohio-based Aloterra Energy at the Agroforestry Center in Acra, Wed., June 27. Aloterra recently announced its intention to expand its biomass production and processing operations into the state of New York. Utilizing idle, marginal, or unproductive land, Aloterra wants farmers to grow a specific type of tall grass, which can be converted into fuel and numerous other biobased products. Aloterra is currently focused on recruiting farmers and landowners in Schoharie, Delaware, and Greene counties. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

John Mason reports in the Register Star, the U.S. Postal Service plans to drastically restructure its network of offices throughout Columbia County, limiting the hours of operation and eliminating personnel. The plan will be implemented during the next two years. Eligible postmasters will be offered retirement incentives, to eventually be replaced by part-time clerks. Window hours at  various post offices, including those located in Austerlitz, Columbiaville, Copake Falls, Mellenville, North Chatham and Stuyvesant Falls will be reduced by half, to four hours a day. Another 10 offices will be cut back to six hours a day. Meetings to elicit community response will be held before the proposed changes are put into effect. Read the full story in the Register Star.

The Daily Freeman is reporting former Ulster County Democratic Chairman Julian Schreibman defeated  Dutchess County Legislator Joel Tyner in the Democratic primary in the 19th Congressional District, Tues., June 26. Schreibman will now face Rep. Chris Gibson (R-Kinderhook) in the November general election. The Associated Press declared Schreibman the winner at 11:02 p.m. With all precincts reporting in Ulster, Dutchess, Sullivan, Schoharie, Rensselaer, Otsego and Broome counties, and most precincts reporting in Columbia, Delaware and Montgomery counties, Schreibman was ahead 58 to 42 percent. There were no results available from Greene County, as of 11:20 p.m. Tyner prevailed in Dutchess and Otsego counties, while Schreibman won (or was on his way to winning) the remaining counties. Michael Hill of the Associated Press is reporting New York City attorney Wendy Long defeated Nassau County comptroller George Maragos and U.S. Rep. Bob Turner in the Republican senatorial primary. Long won in Columbia and Greene counties, according to Tom Casey, writing in the Register Star. Turnout was light. In Columbia County the preliminary count indicated three percent of active Republican voters came out; in Greene County the turnout was a slightly higher four percent. Long will now face Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in the fall general election. Long, a resident of Manhattan, left her private law practice to build the Judicial Confirmation Network, now called the Judicial Crisis Network. Long presents herself as a staunch conservative. She said she opposed same-sex marriage, supports gun rights and vowed never to vote to raise the federal debt ceiling. The Daily Freeman has a rundown of the candidates in Tuesday's primary election. Democratic voters will decide whether Julian Schreibman or Joel Tyner will be the party’s nominee to challenge Rep. Chris Gibson (R-Kinderhook) for the state’s new 19th Congressional District seat in the November election.

Tyner, 47, is a town of Clinton resident who is serving his fifth two-year term as a Dutchess County legislator. He recently has been working a substitute teacher in Dutchess County school districts after leaving a full-time teaching job in the Bronx.

Schreibman, 39, is a Stone Ridge resident, former Ulster County Democratic chairman and a partner in the law firm Wachtel, Masyr and Missry. He has received the endorsements of the Democratic committees in Ulster, Dutchess, Greene, Columbia and Sullivan counties.

The new district is mostly Gibson’s current 20th Congressional District, with northern counties replaced with parts of Maurice Hinchey’s current 22nd Congressional District under recent redistricting plans. The new district includes all of Ulster, Greene, Columbia, Delaware, Sullivan, Schoharie, and Otsego counties; most of Dutchess and Rensselaer counties; and parts of Schenectady and Broome counties.

Also Tuesday, Republican voters statewide choose which of three candidates will face incumbent Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand in the race for U.S. Senate. The Republican candidates facing off in the primary are U.S. Rep. Bob Turner, Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos and New York City attorney Wendy Long.

Turner, who lives in Rockaway Point, was elected to the House of Representatives in September 2011 to fill a vacancy left by Democrat Anthony Weiner, who resigned. He graduated from St. John’s University and spent 40 years of his career in the television industry.

Maragos was elected Nassau County comptroller in 2009. He graduated from McGill University and has more than 35 years of senior management experience.

Long, who lives in Manhattan, received her juris doctor degree from Northwestern University School of Law. She left private practice to build the Judicial Confirmation Network, now called the Judicial Crisis Network. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.

The Associated Press is reporting the U.S. Justice Department will monitor primary elections in Orange County, Tues, June 26, to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Federal observers will be at Orange County polling locations based on a federal court order over concerns about the voting rights of Puerto Rican voters with limited English. Under the consent decree, bilingual ballots will be used countywide and the county will provide poll workers who speak both English and Spanish. Read the full story in The Wall Street Journal.

Nathan Mayberg reports in the Register Star Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's Cleaner, Greener Communities program will fund a $1 million sustainability study and comprehensive plan for eight counties in the capital region, including Columbia and Greene counties. The announcement was made Mon., June 25. The Cleaner, Greener program is a $100 million initiative intended to increase clean energy jobs, improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution. The recipient Capital Region Economic Development Council, which represents the eight counties in the Capital Region, chose the city of Albany to lead the project. Columbia County's representative to the council is Kenneth Flood, the county's planning and economic development commissioner. David M. Halbfinger writes in The New York Times about the findings of the first of 18 audits being conducted by the New York state comptroller, Thomas P. DiNapoli, of the preschool special education program. This is a $2 billion system that relies almost exclusively on private contractors, many of them for-profit companies, to deliver services to 3- and 4-year-olds. The first three audits, released on Monday, June 25, have already led to criminal charges against two New York City companies as well as Capital District Beginnings of Troy, N.Y., which serves 800 children in a 12-county area that includes Columbia and Greene counties. More than 60,000 toddlers with physical, learning, developmental and other disabilities are served by the pre-K special education program across the state each year, with costs split between the state and local governments. Capital District Beginnings will have to pay back $831,244 in disallowed expenses, having charged government $240,000 for salaries for its two co-owners, though they performed little work, auditors said. Protect Project Ghent, the organization fighting the New York State Electric & Gas plan to install an 11-mile high-voltage overhead powerline near or through Ghent and Chatham, reported Sat., June 23, the Public Service Commission has notified NYSEG of several deficiencies in the application submitted for the Columbia County Transmission Project. The deficiencies must be corrected before the matter can move forward. In addition, Rep. Chris Gibson (R-Kinderhook) is now on the record about the NYSEG plan after expressing concern over the potential loss of agricultural lands, the project's impact on important historic and archeological resources and its visual impact. In a letter to the PSC dated June 17, Gibson also voiced his dismay over NYSEG's "apparent disregard" of input from local elected officials. Nathan Mayberg reported in the Register Star Columbia County has seen a sharp increase in the number of children being served by its children's mental health clinics in the past year. Human Services Director Michael Cole reported the number of children served increased more than 37 percent in 2012. The clinic increased outreach with the establishment of three school-based satellite clinics in the Taconic Hills and Hudson school districts during that time. Cole recently requested the Board of Supervisors hire an additional psychiatric social worker to help with the demand, despite a hiring freeze in effect since last year. Asked if the added satellite clinics were the reason for the increased demand, Rosemarie Ansel, the department's director of operations, said that was a part of it. "We're reaching out," she said. Rob LeDonne reported in The Daily Mail concern has arisen in the town of Durham over the construction of billboards on Route 145. Town Supervisor William Carr Jr. told the paper tourism is going well this season and the town's appearance has a lot to do with its popularity, and he does not want billboards to become a problem. Carr's comments were prompted after hearing from an advertising company asking "how many hurdles they'd have to face" to construct a few boards. The answer, Carr found, was "not that many." The town board is now exploring the possibility of adding "a reasonable amount of regulation" around billboard placement in the town. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

More than 1,000 high school seniors in Columbia and Greene counties received their diplomas this weekend. Graduating classes varied in size -- New Lebanon High School senior class consisted of 36 students, while the Ichabod Crane Class of 2012 boasted 155 members. In Hudson, the 129th annual event went on as planned, Fri., June 22, despite the declaration of a citywide state of emergency in the aftermath of the major storm that hit the area Friday afternoon. Coverage of the Julian Schreibman/Joel Tyner Congressional primary election for NY District 19 seems to favor Schreibman, a WGXC comparison reveals. The election is Tues., June 26, and the winner faces Chris Gibson (R-Kinderhook) on Nov. 6. None of local press, including WGXC, did a thorough compare/contrast piece showing the differences between the candidates (UPDATE: The Daily Freeman ran that story today), and most coverage beyond interviews with the candidates focused on unimportant non-issues, such as endorsements. Using Google search results, here is a comparison of the coverage of both campaigns from media in the WGXC listening area.

Albany Times-Union
COVERAGE VERY THOROUGH
The Times-Union did "Meet the Candidate" interviews with both Tyner and Schreibman, and the "Capitol Confidential" blog had many items about the campaign and the candidates. The Times-Union was lone among the local media in fairly covering the campaign finances of both campaigns. While others only reported about the resignation of Tyner's campaign treasurer, and/or Schreibman's out-of-town donations, the Times-Union also reported that much of Tyner's campaign contributions came as works of art for a fundraising auction. Eight months ago, they were already tracking campaign donations. Clearly, the Times-Union had the most thorough coverage.

At that point in the campaign, Tyner was the only announced Democrat candidate.
