From "Free Speech Radio News": "Today, a military judge found Army Private Bradley Manning guilty on espionage, theft and computer fraud charges related to his leaking of hundreds of thousands of government and military documents to Wikileaks, but acquitted him of the most serious charge he faced of aiding the enemy. Judge Col. Denise Lind read the verdict from the bench at Ft. Meade, Maryland. She said she would release details of her findings later. Sentencing begins Wednesday. Manning, who had previously plead guilty to some of the 22 counts against him, could now face more than 100 years in prison. Outside the courtroom at Fort Meade, supporters for Manning gathered this morning ahead of the verdict. FSRN spoke to Mike Mckee, one of the organizers with the Bradley Manning Support Network. He described the gathering, larger than it had been in weeks. “We had about between 50 or 60 people here today as well as a rather revved up media presence as well, both representatives of American media and foreign as well. We’ve held a vigil on the first day of each week of court proceedings, attendance fluctuates, this was certainly one of the larger ones although the numbers weren’t totally uncommon. You saw a good variety of home-made signs as well as banners that people have made for various events and demonstrations that have been had for Bradley over the past year.” McKee said he made the trip from Oakland, California to witness today’s ruling because it was a key event in the debate on freedom and secrecy. “Well, I think the trial is of tremendous importance because what we’ve seen in the government’s argument and what we very well may see in the court’s decision is an approximation or a stand-in for the enemy is now equated to the general public at large and information being available and I think that is obviously very troubling.” Adam Klasfeld is a reporter with the Courthouse News Service. He’s been covering the Manning court martial. Speaking from Ft. Meade today, he said Manning’s act of bringing the material to the public would have implications for years to come. “The largest intelligence leak in US history. It has many different facets. Bradley Manning revealed the world of how diplomacy functions behind closed doors. What the secret conduct of war is and what the dimensions of these are and in learning that, in making sense of it, we come to learn a more intimate perspective.” Today’s ruling followed weeks of arguments and capped a three year period, during which at times Manning had been held in solitary confinement and under other restrictions. Klasfeld said the portraits of Manning that emerged from the prosecution and defense diverged and in the final weeks, language from the prosecution grew increasingly polarizing. “Describing Manning as a traitor, using that word for the first time, and a hacker and using the language of espionage and then we get this radically different perspective from the defense that the leaks did not cause the tremendous amount of damage that everyone had originally anticipated.” That question of damage could be an important factor during the sentencing phase of the trial, which begins tomorrow."

On July 22, Chicago-based label Hausu Mountain began releasing the “Mugen Series.” Split cassettes featuring solo performances, recorded in single takes with absolutely no overdubs or edits, of loop-based improv on the noise/drone spectrum. Each artists tackles the task in their own way, with the instruments and non-instruments of their choosing. I’m a big fan of a good series. I grew up getting Sub Pop Singles Club records in the mail, and even though there was A LOT of clunkers in the bunch, something about the idea of a complete collection intrigued me and I kept signing up for another year. By the time Not Not Fun issued their “Bored Fortress” series a handful of years back, I didn’t even really like 7″s anymore, but I still signed up for that, too (with much better results I should add). It’s especially appealing to my senses when a series goes that extra mile and places certain rules, regulations, and/or themes on the artists involved. It can range from the extremely simple, like region (ie: the “New England”, “Michigan”, “California” etc… box sets from RRR and friends), to something a bit more involved. In the early 2000′s a label called Chrome Peeler issued a set of compilations called “You’ve Got Your Orders” where song titles were assigned to musicians who then had to write and record a song with said title (only two were released, so I’m not sure if that constitutes a series, but…). And of course you got your classics like Star Wars, and who isn’t a Jar Jar fanatic, am i right??? Moving on… The first gripful of Mugens will play out like this: Volume 1 will feature Hausu Mountain label-heads Max Allison and Doug Kaplan under their monikers Mukqs and MrDougDoug. Both sampled and manipulated audio formats, cassettes and vinyl respectively, to start the series off. Volume 2 will highlight the ambient looping of TALsounds (Natalie Chami) and Greyghost (Brian Griffith) who debuted his project on Constellation Tatsu earlier this year. Volume 3 has the caustic laptop processing of Mike Sugarman on the A side and Aeron Small (aka: Ron Tubman) working the guitar and modular synths on the B. Volume 4 sees the Grasshopper duo splitting up, with Jesse DeRosa performing as Shingles and Josh Millrod, who does solo work under the name Dads Against Vietnam, appearing here under the name his moms gave him. Both doing ungodly things with a trumpet. Hausu Mountain plans to keep the series open indefinitely adding a tape to it every couple of months. Splits with Plankton Wat, Steven Hess from Locrian, and others are already planned after the initial roll out of the first four.

It's author, University of Madison, Wisconsin, professor of history Alfred McCoy, credits Edward Snowden for having revealed today's reality. And McCoy adds his perspective of the intriguing history that led up to this point - and he makes a few predictions as to what to expect in the near future. From "Free Speech Radio News": "Today Edward Snowden left a Moscow airport a free man. Russia granted the accused NSA leaker one year of asylum, according to WikiLeaks, which is assisting Snowden. Snowden issued a statement through the whistleblower organization thanking Russia, saying quote, "Over the past eight weeks we have seen the Obama administration show no respect for international or domestic law, but in the end the law is winning." White House Spokesperson Jay Carney said the Administration was “extremely disappointed” in Russia’s decision. “This move by the Russian government undermines a long-standing record of law enforcement cooperation – cooperation that has been on the up-swing since the Boston marathon bombings.” Republican Senator Lindsey Graham was less guarded with his language. He said the Administration should be firm. “I think we should hit ‘em back and hit ‘em hard.” The US maintains that Snowden is not a whistleblower. Carney said the White House is evaluating whether the President will now attend an upcoming summit in Russia. Snowden had been in the international transit area of the Moscow airport for more than a month awaiting decisions on 20 asylum requests to different countries. His current location is unknown."

From "Free Speech Radio News": "A new investigation by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism in the UK has found that several US drone strikes in Pakistan deliberately targeted rescuers, by striking a location once, then striking it again minutes later when people came to care for the dead and wounded. The findings are based on interviews with eyewitnesses and data from Pakistani and international human rights groups. The revelations come the same week US officials are meeting with the leaders of the countries losing the most civilians to drone strikes: Pakistan and Yemen, to determine the future of so called counterterrorism collaboration with those nations. Elements of the video [a cut through the] archive of destruction were reduced to small segments which were divided into text and image video clips, to be played randomly from two separate sources projected on top of each other, and thus superimposing text on the video images. This way, the relation text/image is determined by pure chance, destroying not only the line of thought that presided at the narrative structure of the original video – with its calculated collages, sequences and juxtapositions of image-sound-text of different proveniences – but also originating new and unpredictable image-text relations. The sound of the original video segments was also split into small segments and loops, being subsequently reworked and transformed live during the performance. As images succeed each other in the projection, the performers try to respond to the random image-text combinations, through improvisation. - [a cut through the] archive of destruction is a video, of variable duration, that is part of the Educational Service of the archive of destruction, and consists of collage and editing of diverse materials which can be found in its collection. Through subjective associative lines, it performs a cut, in the geological sense, through some of the main ideas contained in the archive. The video has been presented as part of installations of the archive of destruction and in a similar way to the archive, it develops in a process of continuous change and re-editing, never having the same cut of the video been presented twice. - The archive of destruction is an evolving structure, with no fixed address, dedicated to the collection of documents on actions and ideas that represent a negation of its basic function, which is the preservation of memory. The archive has been developing in a continuous and organic way, in a movement of expansion that stretches to the most diverse areas – within well defined guidelines – where ideas or actions of destruction can be found.

More revelations about the surveillance carried out by the US government show that authorities have used information gathered through tools for monitoring national security threats in order to bring criminal charges against US citizens. Documents obtained by Reuters say agents with the Drug Enforcement Agency’s Special Operations Division were ordered to hide where that information came from when they used it to arrest people on drug charges and try them in court. As lawmakers and activists demand more information about this and other ways the government monitors people domestically and internationally, the Pentagon will begin an audit this week to determine whether it keeps too much data classified. In Washington, FSRN’s Alice Ollstein reports.
