THE DARK SPECTRUM follows a series of electromagnetic (EM) spectrum mapping, interception and transmission performance structures, which the SPEKTR collective started exploring in 2004. Their new work in this series will focus on processes of encoding/decoding of the EM spectrum and natural/man made signals. SPEKTR will collectively spend time with a standard suite of tools: HF, VHF, UHF and L-band Receivers and Transmitters software defined radios, home-brew VLF receivers, and ELF probes complimented by software toolkits (COTS and custom coded) to decode, encode and visualize digital signals. Combined with image and audio recording devices and manipulation strategies, the collective will work together to develop new ideas and segments for a new performance focusing on the digital and encoded/encrypted signals domains.

From Free Speech Radio News: "A coalition of churches, drug decriminalization advocates, civil liberties organizations and other groups filed a new lawsuit against the Obama Administration, saying the mass surveillance conducted by several agencies violates their First and Fourth Amendment rights to free association and privacy protections. As the groups seek a court injunction on the domestic collection of phone and online metadata, lawmakers on Capitol Hill are questioning officials on the constitutionality of the spying programs, and introducing a number of bills to curb them. On Capitol Hill, FSRN’s Alice Ollstein has more."

Overnight broadcast for fourth annual World Listening Day. The purposes of World Listening Day are: to celebrate the practice of listening as it relates to the world around us, environmental awareness, and acoustic ecology; to raise awareness about issues related to the World Soundscape Project, World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, World Listening Project, and individual and group efforts to creatively explore phonography; and to design and implement educational initiatives which explore these concepts and practices. World Listening Day is co-organized by the World Listening Project (WLP) and the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology (MSAE). July 18 was chosen as the date because it is the birthday of the Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer, who is celebrating his 80th birthday this year. Schafer is one of the founders of the Acoustic Ecology movement; the World Soundscape Project, which Schafer founded in 1971, is an important organization which has inspired a lot of activity in this field. The culmination of the World Soundscape Project’s pioneering research into the sound environment is described in his seminal book, The Tuning of the World. Published in 1977, it gained international attention and defined many new terms and concepts in sound and ecology popularly used to this day.

From Free Speech Radio News: "Today the military judge in the court martial of Army Private Bradley Manning denied a request from his defense to dismiss some of the most serious charges, including the “aiding the enemy” charge that could carry a sentence of life in prison. Manning faces 22 charges in connection with leaking military documents to the anti-secrecy group, Wikileaks. Manning has said that he leaked the documents in order to “spark a domestic debate on the role of the military and our foreign policy in general.” The severity of the charge of aiding the enemy could have implications for future government whistleblowers or those seeking to bring information to the public. For more, we’re joined by Kevin Gosztola. He’s covering the Manning trial for Firedoglake.com and has been joining us on FSRN for weekly updates and analysis."

In Cairo, Egyptian authorities set up many legal radio stations in order to block out a pirate station run from protests in favor of ousted President Morsi. In Massachusetts, lawmakers pass a state law regulating the airwaves, throwing pirates in jail. But states cannot regulate the national airwaves, so this law, like those in Florida, New Jersey, and New York, will be ruled unconstitutional.

Radia show 433: “Haren” by Flavien Gillié for Radio Campus Bruxelles. “Haren” de Flavien Gillié from Radio Campus Bruxelles In his essay “Discovering the vernacular landscape” John Jackson Brinckerhoff defines the vernacular, political and emerging landscape. These landscapes overlap, juxtapose and form what Sébastien Marot calls hyperpaysage. In the context of Haren – previously a mecca for chicory production – landscape traces of industrialization contrast with a rural center. Interviews with residents have been recorded, mixed here for Radia with various soundscapes from the place. Flavien Gillié is doing field recordings as a link between places, voices and memory. Nina Bar-Giora is Wave Farm's 2013 Summer Intern, hosting a DJ set live from Wave Farm. Bar-Giora will graduate from Bard College this May with a degree in biology. While at Bard, her studies have been focused in biology and philosophy including courses in the Mind, Brain, and Behavior concentration. Nina is the host of "Rainbows On My Eyeballs," a radio show on Bard’s student-run online station WXBC. She makes music on her own and with the band "Pogs." Writes Bar-Giora, "I’ve long been in love with music and curious about radio. I’m thrilled to be an intern this summer at Wave Farm. I’m looking forward to learning about how a non-profit arts organization works, working alongside artists in residency, and learning as much as I can about transmission and sound arts."

Contact microphone performance: A 30-minute live performance using a homemade piezo disc contact microphone (made in the June Wave Farm sensor-building workshop taught by N.B. Aldrich and Zach Poff), a Line 6 amplifier with a built-in loop system, and a tibetan singing bowl. The singing bowl will be explored using the contact microphone, and the resulting sounds will be amplified and looped through the Line 6. Live looping and overdubbing will be used to create layers of the emerging sounds and explore more possibilities of the sounds generated by the contact mic. I’ll also use the built-in effects of the Line 6 amplifier, such as phaser, reverb, echo, tremolo, and wah, to manipulate the emerging sounds.

Science, re-mixed: A 2-3 hour live broadcast for one of the late night programs on WGXC, centering around the theme of “remixing” science--both in a literal sense and in a conceptual sense. I’ll play around with educational material such as instructional videos, as well as audio from current scientific research reports. I’ll also include scientific sources that are for the layperson, such as Carl Sagan’s Cosmos and other documentary videos about science. These educational and research sources will be mashed-up with contrasting audio from youtube videos about topics that lie in the “fringe” of science--people talking about things like paranormal events, UFOs, conspiracies, occult ideas, psychedelics, schizophrenia. I will also throw into the mix audio of animal sounds, such as bird calls from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology website. There will be a arc to the broadcast that consists of starting with more instructional and formal science-related audio, which will gradually crescendo into a storm of all the fringe and pseudo-scientific material. It will end with organic sounds, such as the bird calls and animal sounds that I will find on the internet.
