Yesterday the U.S House of Representatives passed on a voice vote, HR 1147, the Local Community Radio Act of 2009. This bill will expand the low-power FM program, and allow communities throughout the country to have access to their own airwaves via their own community radio stations. A spokesman for Rep. Scott Murphy (D-NY20), who represents Greene and Columbia counties, says the congressman supported the measure. Now Senate bill 592 must pass that half of Congress before the bill goes to President Obama for a signature or veto.

ProPublica reports $4,891,384 in stimulus spending in Greene County and $5,301,605 in Columbia County. That's $100 per capita in Greene and $86 per capita in Columbia, well below the $616 per county average in New York State (which is skewed because of New York City). Hudson Opera House, Columbia-Greene Community College, Columbia Opportunities, and Kenneth W. Boynton are among the recipients in Columbia, while Columbia Greene Beauty School, Mountainview Housing, Dockside Grill, and Sophia's Pizza were among the loans and grants in Greene County. At tonight's Town of Durham meeting, the board voted 5-0 to impose a six month moratorium on any site plan approvals involving resorts. "Our goal is to take a look at the site plan law and rework it and make sure we aren't losing any valuable resources," said Durham town lawyer Tal Rappleyea. He said several resorts in town were being turned into single- or two-family homes or agriculture uses, and a member of the audience remarked, "we keep losing rooms." So the town board will rework the site plan law before June 15 to help the local tourist industry. The town board also made a, "motion that Tal submits further motions." This, apparently, lets Rappleyea appeal a recent judge's ruling in the town's attempt to dismiss a lawsuit from Weldon House, which wants to put a motocross track in Durham. The town will now again attempt to dismiss the lawsuit.

In conjunction with the global warming conference in Copenhagen this past weekend, a local "vigil" was held at the Warren St. park in Hudson on Sat. Assembly Minority Leader Jim Tedisco was chosen by county party bosses as the Republican candidate for the March 31 special election to replace Kirsten Gillibrand in NY-20 (the district that covers Greene and Columbia counties), after she was appointed to Hillary Clinton's Senate seat.

Tedisco lost in a squeaker to Scott Murphy, gave up his Assembly leadership post under pressure, and sulked for a few months.

But he came out of his funk, and started campaigning for a NY-20 rematch with his usual shtick of faux-populist press releases, ready availability to print reporters, call-ins to conservative talk radio shows, and, in a nod to how media have changed, a blog on the Albany Times Union website. The Times Union is evidently comfortable with hosting political candidates on their site, as long as they have not formally announced.

And it gives obvious candidates like Tedisco campaign blogs where never a discouraging word is heard, since the candidate gets to moderate comments. I found that part out when I made some comments under Tedisco's posts, and none of them got posted.

Basilica Industria, the enormous performance space just down the street from the Amtrak Train Station in Hudson, will host a giant fundraiser for WGXC this New Year's Eve. There will be bands, DJs, and all sorts of other performers to be announced soon. Lady Moon, M.A.S.S., Saber Coup, Bella's Bartok, DJ Jackie Thomas, Mother Fletcher, Young Paris, Trixie (MC), Diata Diata, Hudson City Ramblers, Evan Randall, an aerial performance from Ryder Cooley, Liv Carrow, and a Norman Douglas radio play are some of the confirmed performers/performances.

Jason's Upstairs Bar will help with the champagne toast (included with admission) and the bar; The Main Street Public House in Philmont will sell food; Strongtree Organic Coffee Roasters will keep everyone going; Chronogram magazine is co-sponsoring the whole show, and many other local businesses will be involved.

We need help with this event! If you would like to be involved contact Tom Roe (tom@wgxc.org) or Kaya Weidman (at kaya@wgxc.org) to help organize this giant party fundraiser to get WGXC on the air and bring community radio to this area. WGXC New Year's Masquerade Ball cosponsored by Chronogram magazine.

WGXC got a 3,300-watt non-commercial license from the FCC to start a community radio station that will cover most of Greene and Columbia counties. WGXC hopes to go on the air next summer. WGXC recently got a $71,000 grant from the Commerce Department to pay for half of the transmitter, antenna, and studio equipment. WGXC needs to match the other half of the grant, and raise $71,000 by March 31, 2010. Please help us bring community radio to this area.

Local New York State Senators Jim Seward (who represents Greene County and other areas) and Steve Saland (who represents Columbia County and other areas) both voted "No" today on the Same-Sex Marriage vote in the New York State Senate. The measure failed, 38-24. In May, local Assemblyman Tim Gordon, D-108th, voted “yes” on the bill, while Pete Lopez, R-127th, voted “no”, and Marc Molinaro, R-103rd, was absent.

In The Advocate's "People of the Year" issue, the gay magazine choose New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand as it's Public Servant for being the eleventh U.S. Senator to support marriage equality, and her work to eliminate the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
