Governors ask for federal disaster aid
Over the weekend the governors of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina issued a joint, bi-partisan statement pleading for representatives in Congress to put aside their political games and pass money to fund the emergency operations for recovery from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Andrew Cuomo, of New York, Chris Christie of New Jersey, Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania, and Bev Perdue of North Carolina released this statement:

"Our states have been hit hard by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. While the flood waters have receded and the storms are passed, the damage to communities, businesses and infrastructure remains significant. Billions of dollars in loss and destruction pose a serious threat not only to local and regional economies, but to the nation’s economic recovery. Our states’ governments and our citizens are doing their part to restore and rebuild. The federal government must also do its part. Federal assistance for the victims of storms and floods should be beyond politics. Within 10 days of Hurricane Katrina, Congress passed and the President signed over $60 billion in aid for the Gulf Coast. It's been 28 days since Irene and Lee started battering our states. We urge this Congress to move swiftly to ensure that disaster aid through FEMA and other federal programs is sufficient to start rebuilding now."

Storm aid deadline nears for communities
William J. Kemble in The Daily Freeman reports that local governments face a deadline of this Friday, Sept. 30, to apply for federal funds for repairs to roads, bridges, and other public facilities damaged by Tropical Storm Irene. Tropical Storm Lee, which roared through our area a week after Irene, delayed the assessment process for many towns, and some are just overwhelmed with too much to assess, Kemble reports. Hurricane grant program for nonprofits in Greene and Ulster counties
Julia Reischel in The Watershed Post reports that the Dutchess County-based Dyson Foundation has established two hurricane relief grant programs for nonprofit organizations in several affected counties, including Greene and Ulster. From their press release:

"Nonprofit organizations can apply for emergency funds to assist the organization to recover from Hurricane Irene incurred damages or losses with a one-page narrative describing the uninsured damages or losses and a budget and/or invoice of estimated recovery costs. Applicants are advised to submit these two documents to submissions@dyson.org. The Dyson Foundation will also make grants to nonprofit organizations providing direct services to residents of the Mid-Hudson Valley. These funds are to provide emergency financial assistance to support people impacted by Hurricane Irene. The Foundation will accept applications from organizations with well-established emergency financial assistance programs. These funds are available for qualified nonprofits to distribute to Mid-Hudson Valley residents to cover a broad range of needs resulting from Hurricane Irene. Nonprofit organizations wishing to apply for these funds can submit a one page narrative description of the expected use of the funds and a supporting budget to submissions@dyson.org. Please note that this funding is not being offered directly to individual residents."

Road reopened
The New York Department of Transportation reports that Route 145 in Greene County between Travis Hill Road and CR 352 in Preston Hollow, is once again fully open. The road had been closed since damage from the storms associated with Hurricane Irene.

Two announcements Monday
Two announcements are expected at local press conferences Monday, Sept. 26:
• An official from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will join Scenic Hudson, Dutchess Land Conservancy, state officials, Town of Red Hook officials, other public officials, and local farmers to announce a major initiative to preserve Hudson Valley farms—on highly scenic and prime agricultural acres in Dutchess County and Columbia County. "This initiative provides the farmers with funds they can invest in the viability of their agricultural business operations. The farms supply fresh, healthy produce and meats to consumers via local and New York City greenmarkets and direct sales to homes and restaurants," according to Scenic Hudson. At 10:30 a.m. at Northwind Farms, 239 West Kerley Corners Rd., Red Hook.
• Columbia County Board of Supervisors, Columbia Economic Development Corporation, and USDA Rural Development host a groundbreaking ceremony of Greenport Crossings, a mixed use development on the site formerly occupied by V & O Press. "This groundbreaking is for Phase One of the larger project. The total project, which is redeveloping a brownfield site, will result in three new separate buildings totaling almost 80,000 square feet and result in the creation of 100 new jobs," according to the Columbia Economic Development Corporation. With Rep. Chris Gibson, and others. At 12:30 p.m. at Greenport Commons, Fairview Ave., Greenport.

Cuomo announces $175,000 for Greene farmers; $44,000 for Columbia County
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced $2.4 million from the state's Agricultural and Community Recovery Fund (ACRF) to 125 New York farms to help recover from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Specifically, money will go locally to:
Greene County Soil & Water District - $174,650
Projects: Debris removal, fence repair, and grassed waterway repair.
Columbia County Soil & Water District – $44,000
Projects: Access road, stream crossing, fencing repair, debris removal from crop fields, and stream bank stabilization.
Albany County Soil & Water District – $30,250
Projects: Replacement of alternative water supply and reconstruction of an access road, fencing, and gravel deposition removal.
Delaware County Soil & Water District - $101,214
Projects: Debris removal, milk house waste treatment system replacement, fencing, access road replacement and repair, stream bank stabilization.

Hurricane Irene is taking another victim this fall: pheasant hunters. Greene and Schoharie counties may not get any pheasants released on hunting lands, "due to flooding in some areas and other logistical problems, there are currently no stocking sites in Greene County; however, if conditions improve birds may be released during the regular season," according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The DEC just announced it is releasing 30,000 adult pheasants on lands open to public hunting for the upcoming Fall pheasant hunting season.
In Columbia County there are four release sites:

Gibson: I’m disappointed in [Wednesday] night’s vote
Jimmy Vielkind in Capitol Confidential reports that Rep. Chris Gibson (R, Kinderhook) voted unsuccessfully Wed., Sept. 21 to pass a larger House spending bill directing storm aid to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, an agency with open offices in Greene and Columbia counties, and an agency that may run out of money this week. “I was disappointed to see my colleagues on both sides of the aisle vote against this CR, which provided critical aid money for FEMA and our district,” Gibson said in a statement. “Helping our communities rebuild is far more important than playing political games. I will continue to advocate for immediate passage of FEMA disaster relief and urge leaders from both parties to come together and get this done. Cuomo announces food stamp benefits for local storm victims
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced The Disaster Food Stamp Benefits Program for residents in counties affected by Hurricane Irene became available as of Thu., Sept. 22. Greene and Columbia county residents affected by the recent storms are covered by the program, as are those living in Albany, Delaware, Dutchess, Schoharie, and Ulster counties. The federal government oversees the Food Stamp Program, which is operated in New York State by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA). To qualify for disaster food stamp benefits, applicants:
· Must have lived in one of the designated counties at the time of the disaster. Applicants may be eligible if they are temporarily living outside of the disaster area but within the State at the time of the disaster.
· Must plan on purchasing food during the month of September.
· Must have experienced at least one of the following:
o Loss of food or food stamp benefits.
o Damage to, or the destruction of, the household’s home or self-employment business.
o Disaster-related expenses not expected to be reimbursed during the month of September (e.g. home or business repairs, temporary shelter expenses, etc.).
o Loss or inaccessibility of income including reduction or termination of income, or a delay in receipt of income for half a month.
o Inaccessible liquid resources (e.g. banks are closed due to the disaster).

FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers to close on Sundays
Lissa Harris in the Watershed Post reports that the Federal Emergency Management Agency and New York Office of Emergency Management Disaster Recovery Centers operating in New York State will now be open only six days a week. Hours are now Mon-Sat, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at these locations:
Greene County: Main Street, Prattsville.
Delaware County: Sidney Civic Center, 21 Liberty Street, Sidney.
Schoharie County: Cobleskill Fire Department, 610 East Main Street, Cobleskill.

House Democrats, tea party Republicans block GOP leaders on federal disaster aid
The Daily Freeman reports the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday, Sept. 21 rejected a measure providing $3.7 billion for disaster relief as part of a bill to keep the government running through mid-November by a vote of 230-195. The AP reports that the Federal Emergency Management Agency only has a few days' worth of aid left in its disaster relief fund. FEMA currently has emergency relief centers in Greene and Columbia counties. Read the full story in The Daily Freeman.

The Prattsville Hose Company is a volunteer fire and rescue company, and like much of the rest of Prattsville, it was hit hard by flooding. The company has just set up a new website, enabling folks to donate directly to the Prattsville Hose Company. The New York Post reported Sept. 18 that Benjamin Ellis Freedland posed online as someone collecting donations via Paypal on behalf of the Fire Department in Prattsville, and the state Attorney General's office is investigating, according to the Watershed Post.

Zerega's reopening
Patricia Morrow and Jay Fink at WRIP (97.9-FM) report that Zerega's Restaurant in Windham expects to be open by the Columbus Day weekend, but take-out pizza only. "The dining room is being completely rebuilt and enlarged," Fink reports.

Hurricane Irene recovery grants
The National Endowment for the Humanities Chairman’s Emergency Fund is allowing the New York Council for the Humanities to offer small grants to help arts organizations recover from damage from the recent storms. Grants of up to $1,000 are available from the Council for tax-exempt cultural groups in New York State whose buildings or collections were damaged by Hurricane Irene. These grants are to be used to defray salary costs for professional staff members’ work associated with storm clean-up and recovery. Organizations must be tax-exempt and have at least one paid staff member. Organizations that have already received Council grant support in 2011 may still apply for a Hurricane Irene Recovery Grant. Questions about eligibility and the application process for these special grants should be emailed to grants@nyhumanities.org or you can call 212-233-1131. Applications for these special grants will be accepted on a rolling basis until December 31, 2011.

Storm refuse cleanup in Catskill
Friday will be the last day for storm-related refuse pickup in the Village of Catskill, according to Department of Public Works Superintendent Lewis O’Connor. Residents should place the refuse on the curb, according to a report in The Daily Mail.

Poll: New Yorkers support gambling
Jimmy Vielkind in Capitol Confidential reports that a poll released Wed. Sept. 21 by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, shows a plurality of support statewide for natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale and clearer support for legalizing casino gambling. The poll found slight support, 45-41, just outside the margin of error, in favor of high-impact hydraulic fracturing. "Voters in New York City are divided 41-41, upstate voters oppose drilling 47-43 because of concerns about the environmental implications from drilling. Voters in the New York City suburbs support drilling 56-31," Vielkind writes. On gambling, voters support 56-37 the creation of casinos they have in Atlantic City and Las Vegas. Quinnipiac surveyed 1,016 registered voters, and its results have a 3.1 percent margin of error. Read the full story in Capitol Confidential.

WAMC goes digital
Northeast Public Radio's two local frequencies, WAMC 90.3-FM in Albany and WAMK 90.9-FM in Kingston, both upgraded to digital HD Radio technology with grant support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Digital Radio Conversion Fund. The station claims the stations now have, "a stronger digital coverage," according to a press release.

The Haitian program, "Li Le, Li Tan," hosted by Carline Murphy, will be extended a half-hour, and air from 4-5 p.m. beginning in October. Likewise, "The Bangla Show," hosted by Hosneara Kader, is expanded and moved to 5-6 p.m. The music programs "Rancho Thatchmo," "To Be Determined," and "The Tiki Bar," will now air from 6-8 p.m., and Tony Fallon's "The Irish Show" moves to 8-10 p.m. A new music program will debut soon at 10 p.m.

WikiLeaks cable: Al Jazeera director removed content at U.S. government’s request
Steve Myers at the Poynter Institute's Romenesko+ blog reports that a WikiLeaks leaked cable shows that Al Jazeera removed content from its news site at the request of the U.S. Government. "The cable, from the U.S. embassy in Doha, indicates that the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency sent regular reports criticizing Al Jazeera content, both on-air and online. A U.S. government official told Khanfar in a meeting 'that problems still remain with double-sourcing in Iraq; identifying sources; use of inflammatory language; a failure to balance ... extremist views; and the use of terrorist tapes.'" Foreign Policy magazine says the portrait painted by the 30-plus cables related to Al Jazeera, "is not evidence of any sort of conspiracy so much as an organization struggling to maintain professional standards." Insurance information for storm victims
The New York State Insurance Department Mobile Command Center will be back in Prattsville, Wed., Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the temporary Town Hall there at 14517 Main Street, in Prattsville. The MCC will park to the right of the FEMA tent. Benjamin M. Lawsky, Superintendent of the Department of Financial Services, will also be there, meeting with Assemblyman Peter Lopez, Prattsville Supervisor Kory O'Hara, and other local officials, from 1-2 p.m. The command center takes questions and helps residents with insurance issues.

Disaster recovery centers come to Columbia County
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) brings two disaster recovery locations in Columbia County for residents that have questions or still need to apply for assistance from FEMA as a result of Hurricane Irene. From Sept. 20-22, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., there will be a FEMA center at the Copake Community Center, Sept. 24-26, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., there will be a FEMA center at the Chatham Firehouse. Hudson Crop Walk Sunday
The annual CROP Walk against hunger steps off this Sunday, September 25, at 2 p.m. from Christ Church Episcopal, 431 Union Street. CROP Walks are community-wide events sponsored by Church World Service to raise funds to end hunger. The Interfaith Council of Hudson organized the Hudson walk. Walkers raise money from supporters with 25 percent of the funds going to local food pantries. For information, call 518 828-1329.

Gillibrand works on farm bill
As the first New Yorker on the Senate Agriculture Committee in nearly 40 years and just held a series of listening sessions with state farmers about how the new national Farm Bill may impact them. “New York is home to America’s hardest working farmers and the world’s finest locally-grown produce,” Senator Gillibrand said in a press release. “But for too long, our farmers have been held back by an outdated and unfair pricing system, and other obstacles to grow their businesses. We need our farmers to thrive if we’re going to have a strong and growing economy in New York. I’ve met with and heard from local farmers in every corner of our state, and now I’m fighting for these proposals in the next Farm Bill to make sure it’s a good deal for our farmers.” New York state contains over 35,000 farms on 7.1 million acres generating approximately $4.5 billion each year. For the Farm Bill, Gillibrand has sveral proposals, including:
• The Dairy Pricing Reform and Farmer Protection Act, legislation that would reform the pricing system to improve transparency and price discovery.
• Reforming the Milk Income Loss Contract (MILC) program with the structure of a margin-based insurance policy to provide dairy farmers with a safety net when the cost of feed is high and market prices are low.
• Retain Specialty Crop Block Grants that help ensure long-term viability of specialty crops, which include fruits, vegetables, maple, honey and horticulture products. Congress is cutting many budget items and these are in danger.
• Allow participants of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to use these benefits at farmers markets through mobile technologies.
• A Community Supported Agriculture Promotion Act that would establish a competitive grant program to award federal funds to non-profit organizations, extension services, and state and local government agencies to provide grower support – ranging from marketing and business assistance to crop development – to new or current CSA farmers, as well as assist in the development of innovative delivery and distribution programs.

The drop-off locations for household hazardous waste established since Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee wreaked havoc on our area, at will remain open until Saturday, September 24. Residents whose homes have been flooded should be aware of potential chemical hazards that may now exist in their home. Flood waters may have displaced or damaged containers of everyday items such as household cleaners, fertilizers, and pesticides. People can be exposed to dangerous chemicals when cleaning flooded homes and disposing of these flood-damaged household items. Columbia County Democrats elect new officers
The Columbia County Democratic Committee elected officers at its re-organizational meeting, Thu. Sept. 15. Cyndy Hall of Claverack was elected Chair, Victor Mendolia of Hudson (a WGXC programmer) was elected 1st Vice Chair, Peter Bujanow of Kinderhhook was elected 2nd Vice-Chair. Carol Sacks was elected Treasurer, Kay Abraham of Germantown was elected Secretary of the Committee. Keith St. John of Kinderhook was appointed by the Executive Committee as Parlimentarian of the Columbia County Democratic Committee. Hannaford will not be building in New Lebanon

Lisa D. Connell reports in the Register-Star that Hannaford will not build the 24,000-square-foot supermarket and pharmacy in New Lebanon that was before the planning board there. We feel it is the best business decision to withdraw our application at this point,” company spokesman Michael Norton wrote in a press release. “We did not take this decision lightly and we appreciate the community support this proposal has received.” In November 2010 Hannaford announced plans to build the store at the Valley Plaza Shopping Center on Route 20, next to the former New Lebanon Supermarket. Northeastern Columbia County has few food options since that store closed. The Department of Environmental Conservation recently signed off on the project, which was moving through the planning board process. Read the full story in the Register-Star.

Carole Osterink reports in The Gossips of Rivertown blog that at the Mon. Sept. 12 informal Common Council meeting in Hudson President Don Moore read a letter from Mark Greenberg, attorney for Eric Galloway, saying that Galvan Partners not going to add a restaurant to the Hudson waterfront and buy the former Dunn warehouse, like they promised a few months ago. Osterink also reports, "Moore mentioned that 'sometime this week' he expects to set 'tentative dates' for the Council to review and discuss the edited LWRP." Lopez holds storm meeting in Windham
New York Assemblyman Pete Lopez (R,C,I-Schoharie) holds a Town Hall Meeting Thur., Sept, 15, at the Windham Center Property (5376 Route 23) in Windham. Lopez's parents lost their Schoharie County home in the floods associated with Hurricane Irene, so the Assemblyman does know a lot about this issue. Representatives from several state and federal agencies, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be there to answer questions, as well as folks from the Small Business Association, the Greene County Emergency Management Office, the Greene County Department of Health as well as several Greene County legislators.

Storm relief fundraiser

Greene County schools open
After being delayed almost a week because of recent severe weather, Greene County schools open today, Tuesday, Sept. 13. Windham-Ashland-Jewett schools, however, remain closed through Mon. Sept. 19. From their website:

"Professional restoration teams are working on a 3-shift basis to remove the mud debris and moisture from the first floor of our main building and basement. The basement has been pumped and rinsed by environmental cleanup experts. They are currently working on all first floor classrooms and office spaces. It is very probable that first floor carpets, wood flooring, and some tile will need to be removed and replaced. Many cabinets, sheet-rock walls, paper supplies, and materials have been removed and will be replaced at a later date. The time requirements for ordering and manufacturing some of these products means that a few of the most significantly impacted rooms may not have all the final finishes when school reopens later this month. Regardless of the amount of water and mud cleaned from each room, which varied from a few centimeters to several inches, all rooms will be treated with environmentally-safe products that will prevent and or destroy any possible contaminates."

Columbia County
• CHATHAM Town-wide redistricting reduced the number of election districts from four to three. Most residents in the Village of Chatham and those on White Mills Road and Merwin Road now vote at the Chatham Elementary School gymnasium, 50 Woodbridge Ave. Most residents that used to vote at the community center in Malden Bridge now vote at the new Tri-Village Fire House in Old Chatham at 111 County Route 13. Others will vote at Town Hall at 488 State Route 295, including residents living on Route 66 and on Rock City and Highland roads.
• CLAVERACK Residents that used to vote at the Grange Hall in Mellenville now vote at the Claverack Town Hall, 836 State Route 217.
• COPAKE A second poll site, so not all voting will be done at Town Hall. Voters who live on the south side of Pumpkin Hollow Road North, Sky Farm Road, Twin Bridges Road, and Route 344 now vote at the Copake Recreation Center at 301 Mountain View Road.
• GHENT Election districts numbers one and two were combined to form one district. This includes all residents in Chatham Village and those who live north of the area defined by the intersection of Kline Kill Creek and County Route 9. Voters in this district will now vote at the Chatham Elementary School gymnasium, 50 Woodbridge Ave.
• GREENPORT All residents except those in the southern portion of the town that vote at Becraft Fire Department now vote at the Questar III Educational Facility located at 131 Union Turnpike (State Route 66).
• HUDSON Residents that used to vote at the American Legion Hall will now vote at the Hudson Central Fire Station, 77 North 7th Street. The other sites are the same: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Ward Residents vote at St. Mary's Academy on Allen Street. 4th Ward Residents vote at the County Building at 401 State Street. 5th Ward Residents vote at the Central Fire Station at 77 North 7th St.
• KINDERHOOK All residents that used to vote at the Kinderhook Town Hall now vote at the Ichabod Crane High School gymnasium at 2910 Route 9.
• LIVINGSTON The number of poll sites was reduced from three to two. Residents who live on the north side of Hermitage Road, Walkers Mill Road and County Route 10 and those on the east side of County Route 19 to the north side of Scuderhook Road now vote at the Livingston Town Hall, 119 County Route 19. All other voters will vote at the Elizaville Fire House, 1575 County Route 19.
• STOCKPORT All voters now vote at the St. John the Evangelist Church at 107 County Route 25 in Stockport.
• STUYVESANT All voters now vote at the Stuyvesant Town Hall, 5 Sunset Drive.
The Board of Elections urges anyone who may live on or near a road which is mentioned as a boundary line in the above listings to call the Board ahead of time to confirm their polling location. Voters should also have received two postcards from the Board which indicates their polling location. The Board of Elections phone number is 828-3115. Windham Command Center closes
The Neighbors Helping Neighbors Facebook page reports that the Windham Command Center -- the organizing office for storm recovery in the Greene County town -- is closing. They report that the number there (734-4938) is not any good anymore. Calls should now be made to the Windham Town Hall at 518-734-4170. The Windham Command Center on South Street will only be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. effective Sunday, September 11. Displaced residents in need of housing should call (510) 316-7636. Volunteers to help clean up should call Alyssa at (518) 947-0358.

Farms assess storm's punch
Diane Valden in The Columbia Paper reports that about 150 farms in Columbia County sustained some damage from the winds and rains of Hurricane Irene August 28, but only about 15 were damaged extensively. "Sandra Ferry, executive director of the US Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Columbia and Greene counties, told The Columbia Paper this week that a monetary estimate of farm damage in the county is still being assessed, but primarily losses were to crops of all varieties and crop land. Little harm came to farm structures and no livestock casualties have been reported, Ms. Ferry said," Valden writes. Bob Fix at the Fix Brothers Farm in Livingston told Valden they had up to 1,000 apple trees toppled or leaning. "Cherry trees fared well through the storm because the fruit had already been picked, but the apple trees were still heavy-laden. That weight combined with the saturated ground and the wind weakened already shaky root systems particularly on new orchard dwarf trees that require a support network of poles and wires to keep them upright, Valden writes. Andy Szymanowicz of Sol Flower Farm on Wiltsie Bridge Road in Ancramdale estimates they lost 15 percent of their crops. The Kinderhook Creek rose to three feet high in the corn fields on the dairy farm of State Farm Bureau Vice President Eric Ooms. “But my heart breaks for the people in Middleburgh,” said Mr. Ooms in Valden's story. “They had 20 feet of water in their barns in a matter of minutes, they are burying cows and their house is gone. To get some perspective, we got five-inches of rain, the hill towns got 15. We should feel blessed or lucky or whatever you want to call it.” Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.

• ATHENS: Five people are vying for four Republican Committee seats in District 2. On the ballot are Marilyn Farrell, John P. Farrell Jr., Herbert M. Blasewitz, Fred W. Dedrick II and Anthony T. Paluch.
• CAIRO: Six people are vying for four Republican Committee seats in District 5. On the ballot are Carrie E. Anderson, Tara A. Rumph, David Clark, Barbara L. Koerner Fox, Anthony P. Puorro Jr. and Margaret M. Lawrence. Also, Lewis M. O’Connor and Robert F. Hempstead are seeking the Independence Party line in the race for town highway superintendent; and Monika C. Gibson supportive of Obama's economic rebuilding plans
Marc Heller of the Register-Star's Johnson News Service attempts to analzye Rep. Chris Gibson's body language during President Obama's jobs speech last Thursday evening which was broadcast live on WGXC. "He even rose and clapped when Obama called on Congress to end Washington’s “political circus,” a line that drew blank stares from most of his GOP colleagues," Heller wrote. Then he cites an interview with Gibson, though he does not say who conducted the interview or where. “I think there’s common ground,” he quotes the Republican Representative from Kinderhook. “I think the president is addressing impediments to growth." The Power of the Press (or whatever Gossips is)
Carole Osterink's The Gossips of Rivertown was the first source to report that parking tickets were being issued on Labor Day in Hudson, after city officials previously announced it was one of the holidays on which alternate side of the street parking was suspended. First Ward Alderman Sarah Sterling read the post, and then checked in to why folks were getting parking tickets, and now, sends her this report:

In large measure due to your alert about the parking tickets issued on Labor Day for alternate side of the street violations, and with the assistance of Alderman Sarah Sterling, the matter has been resolved. Hudson Police Department Commissioner Ronald Grant Friday evening informed me that the tickets issued for that infraction were in error and all will be voided. If a ticket has been paid, a refund will be issued. I have expressed my appreciation to the Commissioner and to HPD Chief Richardson for handling the matter professionally and quickly. Last year an agreement was reached with the Common Council to suspend alternate side of the street parking regulations on five holidays. The HPD officers on duty Labor Day were not informed of the suspension of alternate side regulations, the sort of lapse to which we are all subject. The Commissioner has offered his apologies, expressed his appreciation for having the matter called to his attention, and remedied it. For the record, the holidays as conveyed to me by the Commissioner when alternate side parking [regulations] are suspended include: New Year's Eve, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve.

School closings
• All Greene County schools are closed Mon. Sept. 12. An announcement about when they will open for the year will be made Monday, according to Greene County Emergency Services.
• Windham-Ashland-Jewett CSD is tentatively scheduled to open Monday, Sept. 19, according to its website.
• Hunter-Tannersville CSD has not announced any changes from Greene County's opening schedule on its website.
• Middleburgh Central School opens Monday, Sept. 19, according to its website. They will hold a special Board of Education meeting, at 7 p.m. Mon. Sept. 12, in the elementary school cafeteria.
• Schoharie CSD opens Monday, Sept. 12, according to its website.
• Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk CSD has no transportation to or from Greene County, due to Greene County's emergency order. Parent transport only, according to its website.

Tetanus clinics
The Greene County Department of Health is sponsoring free tetanus immunization clinics for adults 18 and over at the following locations:
• Monday, September 12 at the FEMA tent in Prattsville from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and also at the Lanesville Firehouse from 3-5 p.m.
• Tuesday, September 13 at the Lexington Municipal Hall in Lexington from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Mental Health personnel will be available to speak with individuals at the same time that immunizations are being offered. You can also contact the Greene County Mental Health’s main line at (518) 622-9163.

New York State Insurance Department Mobile Command Center comes to region
State Senator James L. Seward reports the New York State Insurance Department Mobile Command Center (MCC) will be in Greene County and Schoharie County this week to assist residents and business owners with questions they may have following recent storms and flooding. The mobile command center is a 50-foot long van equipped with high-speed internet access and telephone equipment that is being used to help property owners file claims and contact their insurance companies. Insurance Department personnel will also be available to answer consumers' questions. Find it:
• Monday, September 12 at 491 County Route 12, in Windham. Hours: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (staff will leave at 7 p.m. if no activity).
• Tuesday, September 13 at Main Street, Middleburgh. MCC will park to the left of the NBT Bank and chiropractor's office and across the street from the post office. Hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
In addition to the MCC, New Yorkers with questions about insurance are urged to call the New York State Insurance Department's disaster hotline, 1-800-339-1759, Monday though Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Insurance-related information can also be found on the department's website, www.ins.state.ny.us.

Emergency agriculture meeting
Cornell Cooperative Extension holds an "emergency" meeting for local farmers at 1 p.m. this Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the Agroforestry Resource Center, 6055 NYS Route 23, in Acra. "This meeting is designed to offer farmers the opportunity to access all of the different disaster relief efforts being carried on right now by the different organizations and agencies, and all in one place," according to their press release. "Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, (FEMA) the Farm Services Agency, (FSA) Farm Bureau, (FB) NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, (NRCS) Soil and Water Conservation Districts, (SWCD) Farm Net, the Department of Labor, (DOL) the Department of Social Services, (DSS) Crop Insurers, the Watershed Agricultural Council, (WAC) Farm Credit East, and Cornell Cooperative Extension will be on hand to help answer your questions, and help direct you to programs within the disaster relief efforts that can best fit your needs."
