Ryan Anglim is reporting in The Daily Mail the Greene County STOP-DWI Law Enforcement Plan for 2015 was approved Wed., Jan. 7, by the Greene County Legislature. The countywide program is under the direction of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office. The program budget is just under $139,000, and is supported by the fines levied by the county following any DWI-related offense. All courts in the county participate in the program. Local law enforcement agencies this year will received funds for saturation patrols during periods of heavy traffic, continued funding of overtime and additional STOP-DWI patrols and road checks, exhibits at the local fairs, a youth fair, DARE events, and more. The Town of Windham hosts a public meeting on Wed., Jan. 14, about the State-sponsored NY Rising Community Reconstruction Program, a state program set up to help communities severely damaged by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee become more resilient through innovative community-driven plans. The Windham Planning Committee will present the projects and initiatives they recommend for implementation in their recently-completed NY Rising Community Reconstruction Plan at the meeting. Members of the public will also learn about next steps in the program. The meeting, from 7-9 p.m., will be held at the Center Church, 5329 State Route 23, in Windham. The state has established the New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program to facilitate community redevelopment and resiliency planning. The Daily Freeman is reporting severe weather has shut down a 132-mile stretch of the Thruway in western New York for the second time since November. The Thruway Authority closed Interstate 90 at midnight Thurs., Jan. 8. from Exit 46 outside Rochester to Exit 61 at Ripley, on the Pennsylvania border. Lake-effect snow and high winds are causing hazardous driving conditions across western New York, where a section of Interstate 190 and other Buffalo-area highways remain closed Friday morning. The National Weather Service says sections of western New York along Lake Erie could get up to 3 inches of snow per hour Friday.

Ryan Anglim is reporting in The Daily Mail the Greene County Chamber of Commerce announced Tues., Jan. 7, it has merged with the Coxsackie Regional Chamber of Commerce, effective Jan. 1. The organization will be known as the Greene County Chamber of Commerce. As part of the agreement, the county chamber has added two board member seats, which will be filled by two members of the Coxsackie Chamber board. County chamber Executive Director Jeff Friedman said he has been reaching out to local chambers to find ways to work more cooperatively and further common goals. He said the Coxsackie Chamber approached him about joining forces. Friedman said the merger provides the opportunity to work more closely with Coxsackie and the ability to better blend that business community with the rest of the county, which will serve all chamber members positively. Casey Seiler in Capitol Confidential reports that State Sen. George Amedore (R-Rotterdam) spoke to the media just before entering the chamber for his first session. Jim Planck reports in The Daily Mail after three years of work, the Leeds-Jefferson Heights Sewer District now officially exists. In a unanimous vote Tues., Jan. 6, the Catskill Town Board approved a resolution legally establishing the district. The board was cleared to take the action after project approval was granted by the Office of the State Comptroller. Also on Tuesday, the board adopted a resolution to bond the project, with a cap set at $11.1 million. With passage of the two resolutions, the town board has effectively given the project a green light to move forward with construction once the final design details have been worked out. She recreated the performance six times for the CBS radio show "Suspense" and several times on other radio shows, always using her original, dog-eared script. The Daily Freeman is reporting the Coalition Against the Pilgrim Pipeline will hold a public forum on the risks of the proposed pipeline at 3 p.m. Jan. 10. The forum will take place at the Saugerties Senior Center, located at 207 Market Street. According to organizers, the forum will address the risks communities are faced with by the pipeline, landowner rights and community opposition throughout New York state. Forum presenters include representatives from Riverkeeper, Citizens for Local Power, Hudson River Clearwater, and Catskill Mountainkeeper. The Pilgrim Pipeline proposal calls for shipping Bakken crude from Albany to Linden, N.J., through a pipeline that would roughly follow the Thruway corridor. Refined crude products would be returned to Albany via a parallel line. The governments of several local towns, including Rosendale, New Paltz, Woodstock and Rhinebeck, have taken formal stands against the Pilgrim proposal. Officials in Rosendale, New Paltz and the town of Ulster have said they lack sufficient firefighting resources to handle potential emergencies along the pipeline route.

The Washington Post is reporting U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson Tues., Jan. 6, participated in the biggest revolt against a speaker nominee in more than 150 years. The last time that many members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted against a major party's nominee was 1860, when Republicans split their votes between two candidates: John Sherman of Ohio and Galusha Grow of Pennsylvania. Gibson, a three-term Republican from Kinderhook, was one of 24 GOP defectors to vote for someone other than John Boehner of Ohio. At least 30 votes against Boehner were needed to prevent him from winning a majority in the first round. Gibson cast his vote for House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California. McCarthy replaced the outgoing Eric Cantor, who lost his bid for re-election after being defeated in the 2014 Republican primary. Gibson was McCarthy's only vote. Twelve of the dissenters supported Rep. Daniel Webster of Florida for the leadership position. Gibson said Tuesday he will leave Congress at the end of the current term, in 2016. He is considering a run for statewide office in 2018.

Melanie Lekocevic reports in the Greene County News the Coxsackie-Athens school district will hold public forums on a proposed elementary reconfiguration, 6:30 p.m. Mon., Jan. 12 at the E.J. Arthur Elementary School in Athens, and on Tue., Jan. 13 at the Coxsackie Elementary School. The proposal -- similar to one abandoned after one year in the Cairo-Durham district -- would house kindergarten through second grade at E.J. Arthur in Athens, and the third and fourth grades at Coxsackie Elementary in Coxsackie. There is no cost savings projected, but “teachers will have more opportunities to work together with their grade-level team to plan for students’ needs,” District Superintendent Randall Squier said. “Teachers can share resources, work together to differentiate instruction, and analyze information about student learning to discern patterns across the entire grade.” Read the full story in the Greene County News.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for the greater Capital Region and Mid-Hudson Valley, including western Columbia, Greene and Ulster counties 5 p.m., Wed., Jan. 7 through 10 a.m., Thurs., Jan. 8. Dangerously low cold wind chill values as low as 15 to 25 below zero are expected. The combination of cold temperatures and brisk northwesterly winds will combine to create dangerously cold conditions. Without considering the wind, temperatures are expected to fall below zero in many area overnight.
