China is increasingly being cited in the media for using transmission technologies to attack a variety of Western countries. Reuters reported Mon., Feb. 25 that shortwave radio broadcasts in English from the BBC World Service are being jammed in China, the British broadcaster said on Monday, "suggesting the Chinese authorities were behind the disruption," according to Reuters. "The BBC strongly condemns this action which is designed to disrupt audiences' free access to news and information," the BBC said in a statement, Reuters reports. "Chinese Army Unit Is Seen as Tied to Hacking Against U.S.," a Feb. 18 The New York Times headline reported. An American security firm reports that a 12-story white office tower in China, hosts the People’s Liberation Army Unit 61398, where, "an overwhelming percentage of the attacks on American corporations, organizations, and government agencies originate in and around the white tower," the Times reported. The European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS), which makes the Eurofighter jet, drones, spy satellites, and the carrier rockets for French nuclear weapons, was hacked recently, Der Speigel reports Feb. 25, and China is also suspected. China responded to the Mandiant Corp. 74-page report that the PLA has stolen data from 141 companies, 115 of which were in the U.S., over a seven-year period. "Cyberattacks are anonymous and transnational, and it is hard to trace the origin of attacks, so I don't know how the findings of the report are credible," Mr. Hong said in the Wall Street Journal. "At the same time, Mr. Hong said China has been a frequent victim of cyberattacks, and he added that the U.S. has been the top source of such attacks. China has suffered virus attacks, and Chinese personal computers have come under control by foreign Internet addresses, he said," according to the Wall Street Journal.

Justin Down's "Will o' the Wisps" installation at free103point9's Wave Farm in Acra, New York, is getting an overhaul. Gearing up for the spring season, engineer Justin Downs works on site at Wave Farm to reconfigure his "Will o' the Wisps," consisting of eight modules deployed in and around a meadow on the Wave Farm property. Each module runs and performs its function with power derived from the environment (in this case solar). The networked system works together to move listeners around an area in varying patterns, indefinitely.
CCRT's "Circular Spectrum Analyzer" is also undergoing a tune-up, as artists Douglas Repetto (pictured) and LoVid work on site at Wave Farm to upgrade their installation. "Circular Spectrum Analyzer" (CSA) is part of the ongoing Cross Current Resonance Transducer collaboration with LoVid. It is a solar energy to sound and movement transducer. Two solar panels directly power a shortwave radio and two motors. One of the motors continuously tunes the radio across the 19MHz spectrum while the other slowly turns seven wooden discs. The shape and engraving of the discs was determined by data collected from the seven Sunsmile devices in Bonding Energy. The same data was used to engrave intricate patterns on the aluminum body of the sculpture.

The Cold War-era practice of reading numbers into a radio transmitter ad nasuem, to embed a code, is now a major motion picture. John Cusack and Malin Ackerman star in "The Numbers Station" thriller due April 20.

This week, Montana television station KRTV was overtaken by some sort of pirate signal, that triggered an Emergency Alert System announcement of a zombie attack during the "Steve Wilkos Show." Gawker reported this week that the station then released this statement:

"Someone apparently hacked into the Emergency Alert System and announced on KRTV and the CW that 'dead bodies are rising from their graves' in several Montana counties. This message did not originate from KRTV, and there is no emergency. Our engineers are investigating to determine what happened and if it affected other media outlets."

WGXC's "Saturday Morning Serial" at 7 a.m. Feb. 16 will tune in this disruption, and also the infamous "Max Headroom" pirate television broadcasts in Chicago in the 1980s, and others. Plus, pirate television songs from the Talking Heads and more.

UPDATE: At least three other stations have had similar incidents, Radio World reports.


"The Mining Journal in Marquette, Mich. reports the “zombie” bogus alerts aired on two television stations in the Upper Peninsula as well: WNMU(TV) and WBUP(TV)," Radio World reports, also writing that a Utah station engineer claims to have stopped another attempt. "One engineer in Salt Lake City said on the SBE EAS Listserv he headed off such an attack: 'There was no record of anything received on the box (CAP or legacy) but there was a transmission about bodies rising from the grave under a CEM header. I headed it off before any of our main channel stations aired it but it did auto-forward to our HD2 channels, as such an ‘emergency’ should have.'"

Overnight, from midnight to 6 a.m. Tue., Feb. 12, on free103point9 and WGXC, a special tribute to jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd. Byrd died Feb. 4.
