Call for 1 minute radio documentaries. Student, professional, artist or journalist. Enter our competition for First Spark Festival 2013. First Spark celebrates the overlooked festival of Imbolc, or Candlemas, the earliest signs of spring, and a time for new ideas in radio, transmission art and electronic music. First Spark 2013 has the subheading 'Alternatives to Journalism' as we explore many ways to tell the stories that cross our path or affect us from far away. There will be a one day event, a 24 hour radio installation, a discussion and, the bit we're most excited about, a competition for 1 minute radio documentaries. Your radio documentary can be on any theme and told in any format, so long as it is audio only. It should be within a hair's breadth of 1 minute, and have a great title. It must be entirely your own work, though could be a reworking of something you have made before. You can enter as a team or as an individual. No other information (eg pictures, explanatory text) will be taken into account by the judges. The deadline is 5pm on Friday 18th January. We'd really like to play them all on Soundart Radio during the first week of February, though anything that is in breech of our guidelines will not be broadcast. The winners (one over 18 yrs, one under) will be announced at the First Spark event on 2nd February 2013. More details on this, and names of judges, to follow soon. For the day after the Barack Obama/Mitt Romney Presidential debate, Orson Welles reads this 1969 story written by Myron Roberts, Lincoln Hayes, and Sasha Gilen, with music by Luchi De Jesus on WGXC 90.7-FM via free103point9 Online Radio. The play includes a glancing reference to George Romney, Romney's father, who failed at an attempt to win the Republican nomination in 1968. It airs at 3 p.m., Thu., Oct. 4 on WGXC 90.7-FM on "Radio Theatre."

"This is a one-joke production, but what a joke it is, and what a voice delivering it. Orson Welles has been at the center of some of the most famous film and radio productions in history, as well as plenty of obscure marvels such as this attack on the American political scene of the late '60s, released on the Media Arts label with one trillionth the impact of "Citizen Kane" and his sad little sled. Revisited only a few weeks after the late-2005 death of Eugene McCarthy, one of the main characters from the chapters of American history depicted on this LP, the virtuoso Welles performance holds up with a bittersweet majesty, the text itself impressive if on the whole overcooked to the extent of an 18-hour French cassoulet. That many hours or more of material could be concocted from any subject given this sort of treatment, the Biblical makeover with the mockingly solemn narration: "And it came to pass that on the very first day, the record critic held the recording of Orson Welles in his sweaty hand and declared that it is good." Factor in as many puns and elbow-in-the-ribs references to topical material, an actual "L.B. Jenesis" as described in the opening selection, and it is sometimes too good, a bubble bath of social snickery without a drain-out valve. The background music credited to Luchi de Jesus is rich and classy; but of course the tapping of a spoon sounds that good next to the voice of Orson Welles. His rich palette of tonal inflections, treading authoritatively over the apex of the music bed, at times approaches the surreal heights of a Firesign Theatre album."

length. Alternatively, if you're brave enough, you can broadcast live
through streaming or from our temporary studio in the city of Porto.

Animal Collective, "Centipede Hz" (Domino)

Steven Hyden in Grantland writes: "There is much to admire about the construction of Centipede Hz. It is a loose concept record about the radio; specifically, what happens to all those commercials and station identifications once they escape the Earth and get flung into outer space.... There is no "story" to Centipede Hz, and the concept is hardly overbearing, but it does inform the sound of the record: The songs crackle and move in and out of focus; sometimes, like on the violently metallic opener "Moonjock," snippets of alien melodies and disembodied voices appear suddenly in the mix."

Bob Dylan "Tempest" from "Tempest" (Columbia)
The title song of Bob Dylan's latest album is a 14-minute epic with a bit less structure and a slower gait then "Hurricane," tells the story of the Titanic sinking. There are strings on deck near the end, and references to the artist Leo. The sinking of the ship led to the Radio Act of 1912 in September, mandating radio-monitoring onboard ships and coasts. The song below is not the song in question, but another from the album out Sept. 11.

With a vague radio title, this latest collection of whispered songs from the Hall of Famer is another classic. With Hall of Famers PG Six on guitars and Helen Rush on Casio; plus Steve Shelley on drums; Moritz Finkbeiner on keyboards; Thilo Kuhn on Mellotron and vibraphone; Werner Notzel on organ guitar; and Willie Lane and Brian Sullivan contributed guitar parts as well.

"Bury the Kings" is the fourth album by Chris Lee, and was produced by Steve Shelley at Sonic Youth's Echo Canyon studio with by David Nagler on keyboards, Aaron McClellan on bass, Joey McClellan on guitar, and Shelley on drums.

"This is a recording of 2 classical Danish psalms played at the organ in an old church in Han Herred, Northern Jutland. The church was originally build of granite in the 12th century in roman style. Other parts such as the tower were added later in the late middle ages, and a major repair was made in 1801. Most of the inventory is from the 16th and 17th century, however the organ is said to be far newer. Historically, this is a windy and remote region of the country, squeezed between Limfjorden and the North Sea, and it has been highly affected by sand drift over the centuries. Below is the resulting audio-video footage from July 2012. The sound is captured about four meters in front of the organ. Listen in headphones for the best quality."

Conrad ("Conny") Schnitzler (17 March 1937 – 4 August 2011) was a prolific German experimental musician.... He was an early member of Tangerine Dream (1969–1970) and a founder of the band Kluster. He left Kluster in 1971, first working with his group Eruption and then focusing on solo works. Schnitzler participated in several collaborations with other electronic musicians.

"This talk will analyse the sonic and affective turns that have appeared relatively recently in both contemporary art practice and current critical thought from the standpoint of what Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi has termed “semiocapitalism.” Though the attention to sound and affect is typically held to be a remedy to the excesses of the past few decades (occularcentrism, the preoccupation with discursivity, and the persistence of form, to name but a few), affect is precisely that which contemporary capitalism in its financialized form exploits as a productive force. Are the sonic and affective turns, then, actually extensions of semiocapitalism? Michael Eng’s areas of research include sound, philosophy of the image, philosophy and architecture, and post-Heideggerian aesthetic theory."
