"'The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller' is a new “live documentary” by Academy Award-nominated director Sam Green (The Weather Underground) featuring a live score by legendary indie rock band Yo La Tengo. The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller traces the career of twentieth-century futurist, architect, engineer, inventor, and author R. Buckminster Fuller (1895–1983).... At every screening, Green narrates the film in person and cues images from a laptop while Yo La Tengo performs their original score. The performance is a follow-up to Green's internationally-acclaimed live film 'Utopia in Four Movements,' which premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. This new work features the same unique combination of film clips and live music, as Green's in person cinematic narration draws inspiration equally from old travelogues, the Benshi tradition, and TED talks."

Composer Philip Glass debuts his latest opera, "The Perfect American," about Walt Disney's final months. The opera premieres at Feb. 6, 2013, 2 p.m. Madrid time at the Teatro Real de Madrid. Click here for more information.

[caption width="400" align="alignnone"] Tennessee Watson and Laura Hadden.[/caption]free103point9 and AIR, Inc. named producers Laura Hadden and Tennessee Watson as their 2013 Live Interactive Residents, chosen from a competitive international field of candidates. The pair will spend this spring developing new media work at free103point9’s Wave Farm in upstate New York’s Hudson Valley. This marks the first time AIR has focused its residency on collaboration. The intent is to encourage promising makers to experiment with blending place-based media in new ways drawing on the digital and broadcast/transmission spectrum. Hadden and Watson were cited in 2011 by the International Documentary Challenge in the Best Film and Best Directing categories for a previous joint project, "Matthew 24:14." They will spend ten weeks creating "Wage/Working," a new, time-based media installation blending data related to income with stories contributed by local workers whose earnings span the spectrum. The collaborators have a diverse history working in documentary film and radio. For the last three years, Hadden has served as the media and communications manager for The Moth. Watson is a multimedia producer based in Brooklyn, NY. Prior to moving to NY, she spent four years at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University producing documentaries, instructing courses and coordinating Youth Noise Network, a radio project for teens in Durham, North Carolina.





Laura Hadden is a documentary media artist and multimedia producer whose work has been featured at Frameline Film Festival, Hot Docs, UnionDocs, and on The Documentary Channel and BBC News. For the last three years, Hadden has served as the media and communications manager for The Moth. She has facilitated workshops at the Center for Digital Storytelling as a part of the AmeriCorps VISTA program and was a member of KPFA’s First Voice Apprenticeship Program. Together with her husband Jesse, she hosts United Noshes, a quasi-weekly dinner party and blog featuring one feast from every United Nations member. She is currently pursuing an MFA in Integrated Media Arts at Hunter College.






Tennessee Jane Watson is a lover of long-haul adventures, be they documentaries or foot races. In 2004 she bicycled from Maine to Texas with a burlesque troupe performing the Sweet Saddle Sideshow, a lusty lesson on the history of bicycles and feminism. In 2005 she was wooed away from her wanderlust to work at The Center for Documentary Studies in Durham, NC, where she spent four years coordinating youth programming, and co-producing the Nuevo South Project with John Biewen. She’s a current contributor to the Guantánamo Public Memory Project and the Pauli Murray Project. As an MFA candidate in Integrated Media Arts at Hunter College she’s channeled her sound skills into radio, video, installation and performance.

Since then Oswald has refined his "electroquoting" on the CDs Greyfolded, Electrax, Discosphere, Plexure and the recently released Plunderphonics box set. In his Radio Radio program he talks about the legal machinations that have surrounded his work and plays a range of examples.

"Deep Listening has been developed by Pauline Oliveros over the past 40 years as a way to enhance attention, listening and creativity for all. To this end it draws upon a wide variety of embodied practices as well as theories of cognitive science, and has been applied to a variety of fields. This includes pedagogy across all levels of education, creative arts therapy, the realization of new creative works, developing new performance paradigms across abilities and the pairing with new technologies to advance all of these fronts and more.

The conference Deep Listening: Art/Science invites practitioners and scholars to consider the experience of this practice and its use in creation, communication and education. This call equally invites scientific and philosophical discussions that describe the efficacy of the approach or point towards new directions or applications of Deep Listening. We invite proposals that may include scholarly lectures, a poster presentation, experience-oriented expositions/demonstrations, or a mixture of these two."

All topics on the art and/or science of Deep Listening are welcome, while suggestions include:

Submissions

Submissions will be accepted in one of three forms:

Lectures/Demonstrations/Experiential Presentations that can neatly fit into 20-30 minute time slots, and which can succeed in a conference-style format in an efficient and self-contained manner (e.g. technically, presentationally).
A poster presentation
Workshops which may last 30-60 minutes and include expanded interaction and participation with your audience.
When choosing a format be advised that there are considerably fewer slots available for workshop-style presentations than conference-style or poster presentations.

A subset of Paper-based presentations will be considered for a future collection on the Art and Science of Deep Listening. To be considered for this, authors must include an extended abstract (maximum 1,000 words) with their submission and submit the full paper in advance of the conference.

Thanks for coming to lead a workshop on our Radio Anywhere project. And bringing along a rare photo of an architect dog. From that it was a short step for the Radio Anywhere Ambassadors to find a dog genius to interview, recordings from the dog relaxation spa, extensive reviews of building design, sounds of disgruntled cats, songs about dog builders, statements from pro-human-architect campaign groups and a machine that translates dogs thoughts.

Why Radio Anywhere?

Radio Anywhere Ambassadors meet to talk about radio ideas, produce work together, and to broadcast from their homes, streets, neighbourhoods, towns and planet with Soundart Radio's little-studio-in-a-box. As they do this they will inspire more radio makers they meet along the way, as part of our station's redefinition as a network of small connected studios.

Joshua Fried remixes New York City radio live from his Brooklyn studio. Fried's Radio Wonderland turns the very bits and bytes of commercial culture into the driving backbeat to our dance of independence. In this developing solo, Fried abstracts live FM radio with laptop, electrified shoes hit with sticks, and a computer-hacked steering wheel (from a Buick 6.) His software creations include AnythingBass (wind up random radio into a down-low riff,) the Re-Esser (extract the sibilance, play those S's, T's and K's like a drum machine,) and Anything Kick (morph slowed-down radio into a bass drum to shake the dance floor).

Keith + Mendi Obadike will join host Tom Roe live from free103point9's Wave Farm and the WGXC Acra studio to present a special broadcast of their net.opera "The Sour Thunder" (Bridge Records). "The Sour Thunder" tells a double-sided story blending autobiography and speculative fiction. Sesom travels from a land where scent is language to a land where language is spoken. Mendi travels from Atlanta (the US) to Santiago (the DR). "The Sour Thunder" explores the role of geography in identity and the idea of language as a technology. The first iteration of this project was simultaneously performed in and webcast from the Yale Cabaret and Afro American Cultural Center.

'Off The Hook' radio program from WBAI in New York, with internet activist Aaron Swartz a guest a few months ago before his recent suicide. This show features an excerpt of that, along with part of an interview with Swartz at age 14 that underlines what a remarkable person he was. We also delved into the issue of depression in our community with excerpts from the 'Geeks and Depression' panel at HOPE Number Nine, and we had a roundtable discussion on what we can do better and where people at risk can turn.

"Art's Birthday" is an annual event first proposed in 1963 by French artist Robert Filliou. He suggested that 1,000,000 years ago, there was no art. But one day, on the 17th of January to be precise, Art was born. According to Filliou, it happened when someone dropped a dry sponge into a bucket of water. Filliou proposed a public holiday to celebrate the presence of art in our lives. In recent years, the idea has been taken up by a loose network of artists and friends around the world. Each year the Eternal Network evolves to include new partners - working with the ideas of exchange and telecommunications-art. In 2013, for the 1,000,050th birthday of art, the Experimental Sound Studio hosted the radio collaboration NRRF Radio in the Audible Gallery from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., January 17 (GMT -6) -- transmitted to the neighbourhood via FM (87.9) and to the world streamed live over the internet. This is a rebroadcast of that show. Listening and exchanging with birthday streams circulating internationally, infiltrating available bands with tenacious earworms and parasitic refrains, powered of course by lurid birthday cake. Glue Banta, Jonny Farrow, Anna Friz, Stephen Germana, Jeff Kolar, Peter Speer, and guests bring the noise.

Matmos release their new album, "The Marriage of True Minds" Feb. 19 on Thrill Jockey. It is concept album about telepathy, with songs such as "Mental Radio." Their press release:

"For the past four years the band have been conducting parapsychological experiments based upon the classic Ganzfeld ("total field") experiment, but with a twist: instead of sending and receiving simple graphic patterns, test subjects were put into a state of sensory deprivation by covering their eyes and listening to white noise on headphones, and then Matmos member Drew Daniel attempted to transmit "the concept of the new Matmos record" directly into their minds. The resulting transcripts of the videotaped psychic experiments became poetic and conceptual scores used by Matmos to generate the nine songs on this album."

But one day, on the 17th of January to be precise, Art was born. According to Filliou, it happened when someone dropped a dry sponge into a bucket of water. Artists have celebrated Art's Birthday with lavish parties and gatherings, correspondence and mailart, and through Telematic networks using SloScan TV, Videophones, music composed for telephone lines, modem-to-modem MIDI connections, early bulletin board and chat systems, and (starting in the mid 1990's) the Internet. free103point9: transmission arts and WGXC 90.7-FM will broadcast several of these events Jan. 17-Jan. 20. Karolina Sobecka's "The Cloud Machine" attempts to alter weather conditions, if on a micro scale. "'The Cloud Machine' is a personal device for weather modification. It consists of cloud-making gear sent up into the atmosphere in a weather-balloon payload. As it reaches specific altitudes it disperses Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN), heat and water vapor. Moisture in the air condenses into cloud droplets around the CCN, forming into small clouds. This method is inspired by a geo-engineering technique proposed to create brighter, more reflective clouds which shield earth from sun’s radiation, and thus partly counteract the climate change," Sobecka writes.
