Three musical deaths are mourned: Onetime Negativland member Ian Allen died Jan. 17, a result of infections and complications following heart-valve replacement surgery at a hospital in Sanford, California. He was 56. Also, Edgar Froese of Tangerine Dream died this week at age 70. And Kim Fowley, punk sideshowman and musician, also passed away this week. This show will listen to their sounds.

From 2014, Brett Ian Balogh: Interferences is a series of four broadcasts to take place on each Friday in July 2013. Each broadcast features a geographic site in the Chicago area where some type of built interference in the landscape has or currently is taking place. The content of each broadcast consists of text, maps, photographs, or drawings relating to the site. This content will be in the form of digital files that are subsequently encoded as sound using amateur radio digital modes. Each broadcast will be made on frequencies occupied by licensed commercial stations in Chicago with the intent to interfere with them. Each interference creates a temporary autonomous zone within licensed Hertzian space where the site can assert or advertise elements of its past, present, and future with the same voice as the mass media broadcasts that envelop it.

The exhibition surveys the history and mythology of the Videofreex, a collective of artists, storytellers, and activists who produced and disseminated alternative media across New York and other U.S. communities during the 1970s. They lived in Greene County in the early 1970s and produced Lanesville TV, perhaps the first pirate television station in the United States. The Videofreex exploited the new technology of portable video as an emerging medium for creative expression and as a democratic tool for disseminating independent points of view in a pre-digital age. By establishing the first pirate television station in the United States, the Videofreex created a base for media education and training, and an informal media art center hosting local and international visitors.

ZE BIB! is a collaborative effort between cellist/electronic musician Shanna Sordahl and percussionist Robert Lopez. Debuted in the warm Oakland summer of 2013, Ze Bib!'s music grapples with the spastic intensity arising from explorations into sound worlds developed both collectively and independently. As active musicians for a variety of projects in the Bay Area, Lopez and Sordahl's extreme musical interests converge with explosive force. A desire to continuously expand and reinterpret their relationships with their instruments leads to an ever exciting dynamic that will intrigue and entrance. Their music is tinged with influences ranging between noise, free improvisation, art rock, and heavy drone.

Radia Show 515: "Savusauna" by Lasse-Marc Riek for Radio X (Frankfurt/Main, DE). As a substantial part of Finnish life and culture, sauna has a considerably long tradition in Finland. Savusauna, the smoke sauna, is the eldest technique of preparing a sauna bath. In contrast to more recent sauna baths, no chimney is needed. A big fire is prepared and kept over hours under constant temperature – not to low, but also not too hot, to produce smoke. The smoke is filling and thus heating the sauna room. When the room is hot enough, small windows are opened to let the smoke escape and the sauna bath can begin. Have you ever enjoyed a savusauna? You should. Lasse-Marc Rieks piece invites you to join a savusauna bath by listening. It’s really worth a try. While Lasse-Marc Riek, being a specialist for field recordings, would for sure have been able to provide extra material to capture the atmosphere around the savusauna as well, we did not ask for that. His piece is complete in its on rights, celebrating the Finnish sauna culture of the everyday. At the same time, when it comes to sauna bath: how can we translate this experience into sound? Obviously, for several reasons this seems to be an almost impossible task. Or, to be more precise: what we might consider as the most natural translation would be always the most artificial part. For we’d loose track of what we are missing, what can’t be captured with the means of recording, due to the fact that the core experience is fuelled by substances that can’t be kept: smoke, heat, steam, sweat. So we chose for our acoustic framework a good mixture of field recordings – some of which are so concrete that they might remind you of Foley sounds, the kind of sounds that are created for exactly this very kind of purpose: a substitute that may feel more real than the real one would. But is this really true? You’ll be able to find out anyway. But then we also have to be complete with our credits (see below), thus it is not really necessary to try. Yet, why not stop reading here. Listen by yourself first. And check the data later. It’s really worth a try… LASSE-MARC RIEK is an artist mainly working in the field of sound art, acoustic ecology and related interdisciplinary research, including cooperations with other artists as well as scientist. He is also the co-founder of GRUENREKORDER, an outstanding label for phonography, sound art and field recordings. Over the past years he has been travelling north more but once, often returning with field recordings from the frozen world. This winter he has spent some weeks in Finnland. And as it went to be quite cold outside he regularly enjoyed the savusauna.

Radia Show 515: "Savusauna" by Lasse-Marc Riek for Radio X (Frankfurt/Main, DE). As a substantial part of Finnish life and culture, sauna has a considerably long tradition in Finland. Savusauna, the smoke sauna, is the eldest technique of preparing a sauna bath. In contrast to more recent sauna baths, no chimney is needed. A big fire is prepared and kept over hours under constant temperature – not to low, but also not too hot, to produce smoke. The smoke is filling and thus heating the sauna room. When the room is hot enough, small windows are opened to let the smoke escape and the sauna bath can begin. Have you ever enjoyed a savusauna? You should. Lasse-Marc Rieks piece invites you to join a savusauna bath by listening. It’s really worth a try. While Lasse-Marc Riek, being a specialist for field recordings, would for sure have been able to provide extra material to capture the atmosphere around the savusauna as well, we did not ask for that. His piece is complete in its on rights, celebrating the Finnish sauna culture of the everyday. At the same time, when it comes to sauna bath: how can we translate this experience into sound? Obviously, for several reasons this seems to be an almost impossible task. Or, to be more precise: what we might consider as the most natural translation would be always the most artificial part. For we’d loose track of what we are missing, what can’t be captured with the means of recording, due to the fact that the core experience is fuelled by substances that can’t be kept: smoke, heat, steam, sweat. So we chose for our acoustic framework a good mixture of field recordings – some of which are so concrete that they might remind you of Foley sounds, the kind of sounds that are created for exactly this very kind of purpose: a substitute that may feel more real than the real one would. But is this really true? You’ll be able to find out anyway. But then we also have to be complete with our credits (see below), thus it is not really necessary to try. Yet, why not stop reading here. Listen by yourself first. And check the data later. It’s really worth a try… LASSE-MARC RIEK is an artist mainly working in the field of sound art, acoustic ecology and related interdisciplinary research, including cooperations with other artists as well as scientist. He is also the co-founder of GRUENREKORDER, an outstanding label for phonography, sound art and field recordings. Over the past years he has been travelling north more but once, often returning with field recordings from the frozen world. This winter he has spent some weeks in Finnland. And as it went to be quite cold outside he regularly enjoyed the savusauna.

The Saturday Afternoon Show welcomes percussionist and NEXUS ensemble member Garry Kvistad live in WGXC's Acra Studio at the Wave Farm Study Center. Kvistad will be in conversation with host Tom Roe as well as premiere several not-yet-released recordings by NEXUS of the music of John Cage. This broadcast is presented in conjunction with, Reality Radio, a four-month durational project spanning February to May 2015 featuring a continuous audio surveillance feed from the Bard College Percussion Studio headed by Sō Percussion. Reality Radio positions those who move throughout the studio – students, professors, administrators, visitors, even maintenance crews – in the role of performer, with listening audiences as ever present observers, and is a co-presentation of Wave Farm, the Bard College Conservatory of Music, and the John Cage Trust.

Garry Kvistad is founder and CEO of Woodstock Percussion, Inc., makers of Woodstock Chimes distributed worldwide. Garry has been performing and recording with Steve Reich and Musicians since 1980, being one of 18 musicians to win a Grammy for the Nonesuch recording of Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians. He tours and records with NEXUS, the internationally-renown, Canada-based chamber music ensemble. Garry has a BM from the Oberlin Conservatory and a MM from Northern Illinois University where, in 1993, he received its Distinguished Alumni Award. Garry worked with composer/conductor Lukas Foss as a Creative Associate in Buffalo ‘71-72, after which he joined the faculties of Northern Illinois University and the University Of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. His Balinese Gong Kebyar Gamelan ensemble, Giri Mekar, formed in 1987, is on loan at Bard College where Garry currently serves as faculty advisor.

On episode #53 of the FFFoxy Podcast, we played and talked-up several noteworthy reissue/archival-related titles by the likes of Ghedalia Tazartès, Phil Yost, Pip Proud, Aine O’Dwyer and more. We also dipped into the stacks of tapes that we’ve received in recent months to pull out some of our favorites. We’ve been particularly fascinated by the pulverizing electronic shenanigans of Mark Dicker, the sparse late-night songs of Obody, the woozy sound collages of Sumbu Dunia (and the entirety of the new Noumenal Loom tape batch), and the dreamy guitar drift of Cloudsound. On top of that, we spun the latest vinyl offerings from Sean McCann and Tracey Trance, both brilliant in their own unique way. There’s much, much more that we’re enthusiastic about within this episode (all of it, in fact), but we’ll let you give it a listen and see what you think. Interview with Radio Web MACBA (RWM) curator Anna Ramos about special broadcast featuring radio-related commissions by Radio Web MACBA from Barcelona, Spain. RWM is a radiophonic project of the Museum of Contemporary Art Barcelona (MACBA) that explores the possibilities of the internet and radio as spaces of synthesis and exhibition. The broadcast, at 8 p.m. Sat., March 14, features works by Hank Bull and Felix Kubin, as well as David Crowley's look at Oskar Hansen's links to the twentieth-century Polish electroacoustic scene, and the role of the experimental radio studio in Warsaw at the time; Franco Berardi remembering the days of Radio Alice, a legendary free radio in the seventies; Lawrence Abu Hamdan exploring the contemporary politics of listening and the role of the voice in law; and reintrepretation of Samuel Beckett's play 'Cascando', by Joan Morey.

He is a celebrated nightclub organist and inventor, who has patented a number of his own inventions and often performs at his own private club, the Spellcaster Lodge, located on St. Claude Avenue in New Orleans’ 9th Ward. He frequently performs with his wife, fellow musician and puppeteer, Panacea Pussycat (also known as Miss Pussycat), co-founder of the 9th Ward's now defunct Pussycat Caverns. This week: "I recently discovered Caroline Nevejan’s work on presence. In the piece 8 spaces to act or not, she divides presence into three parameters: now/not-now, here/not-here, you/not-you. I was taken by the option of now/here/not-you, the immediacy and intensity of being in ‘now’ and ‘here’ surrounded by not-you. This piece contains field recordings from places where I felt surrounded by “not-you” most and wanted to act (make a sound), and then versions of just those sounds without a place. It ends with a sacred moment, I witnessed a wedding in a church in a small town in Lithuania which was open to the public despite being a private ceremony. The wedding was only 8 people, and the song I walked in during was entrancing and futuristic. Wave Farm's WGXC 90.7-FM is pleased to broadcast a recording of the recent panel discussion "Videofreex: A Foundation for Participatory Art and Social Engagement," which took place at SUNY New Paltz on March 8, 2015 in conjunction with the exhibition Videofreex: The Art of Guerrilla Television on view at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art though July 12, 2015. The panel featured Videofreex members Parry Teasdale and Skip Blumberg who discussed Lanesville TV as a model for civic engagement, creative placemaking, and revitalization.
