During her residency Contant will further develop a performance for radio based on research about transmission during The Weimar Republic. This research was compiled in her Master’s thesis, which received The Distinguished Thesis Award from The New School’s Media Studies Department in 2012. Over 90 pages of historical, technical, and theoretical writing addresses a lacuna in media scholarship about the importance of this radio epoch. However, in its academic form, Contant realizes that her research remains limited to a small, rather specific community. A public performance and archival documentation of her proposed performance, makes Contant’s research accessible to a wider public audience.

Advocates for low-power window are trying to get a second window to allow more non-profit groups to apply for stations. Experts say that is not likely.

The internet provider Verizon asked the court to toss out the rule entirely, saying it should have the right not only to charge websites for better and faster service, it should be able to block some content entirely. Both the FCC and public interest groups intervening in the case warned that this would encourage corporate censorship and favoritism, and stifle free speech and competition online. Rebroadcast from Sept. 7, 2013, an interview and sound works from composer Stephen Vitiello. Stephen Vitiello is a visual and sound artist, currently included in the "Soundings" sound art show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Originally a punk guitarist he is influenced by video artist Nam June Paik who he worked with after meeting in 1991. He has collaborated with Pauline Oliveros, Scanner aka Robin Rimbaud, and Frances-Marie Uitti as well as visual artists Julie Mehretu, Tony Oursler and Joan Jonas. Vitiello was a resident artist at the World Trade Center in 1999 where he recorded sounds from the 91st floor using home-built contact microphones, as well as photocells and used that material in his Bright and Dusty Things album (New Albion Records) as well as in an installation environment, World Trade Center Recordings: Winds After Hurricane Floyd. Vitiello has had solo exhibitions of sound installations, photographs and drawings at museums and galleries including The Project, NY, Museum 52, Los Angeles and Galerie Almine Rech, Paris. Group exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial, the 2006 Sydney Biennale and Ce qui arrive (Unknown Quantity) curated by Paul Virilio at the Cartier Foundation, Paris. CD releases include The Sound of Red Earth (Kaldor Public Art Projects), Box Music with Machinefabriek (12k), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub Rosa) and Buffalo Bass Delay (Hallwalls). Vitiello is currently an associate professor in the Kinetic Imaging department at Virginia Commonwealth University.

From "Free Speech Radio News": "In the latest revelations about US government spying, the NSA has the capacity to hack into smartphones, accessing vast amounts of data including call logs, contact lists, text messages and geolocation information. That’s according to Laura Poitras, who co-authored a report today in Der Spiegel based on NSA documents leaked by Edward Snowden. The NSA has developed specific teams to target certain companies or operating systems, such as Apple’s iPhone, according to the report. The documents, some of which Der Spiegel published, show examples of private photos and text messages that the US government accessed, such as an email sent by a Mexican government agency through a Blackberry encryption technology but intercepted by the NSA. For more, we’re joined by Barry Steinhardt, founder of Friends of Privacy USA. In a related update, Facebook, Google and Yahoo filed separate court motions today to allow them to reveal more details about the government’s surveillance program. The companies filed the motions in the government’s secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, asking the court to allow them to disclose information about the NSA’s requests for information. Currently, the tech companies are barred from revealing details about the requests."

Oneohtrix Point Never—aka Daniel Lopatin—is a Brooklyn-based composer who creates electronic music that is often described as “cinematic” and “orchestral.” He's performing at EMPAC at RPI in Troy, NY, Sept. 12, 2013. Interview with Eliane Radigue and Keith Fullerton Whitman from Issue Project Room in Brooklyn, and other works by the composer Keith Fullerton Whitman. Keith Fullerton Whitman (born May 29, 1973) is an American electronic musician who has recorded albums influenced by many genres, including ambient music, drill and bass, and krautrock. He records and performs using many aliases, of which the best-known is Hrvatski (the Croatian word for Croatian). His works under the Hrvatski moniker mainly fell under the 'drill and bass' subgenre of IDM, and were his main musical outlet in the mid-to-late 1990s. Other solo aliases include ASCIII and Anonymous. Keith was in many bands in the 1990s, including El-Ron, The Liver Sadness, Sheket/Trabant, The Finger Lakes and Gai/Jin. Keith Fullerton Whitman started recording using his own name in 2001, and most of his work recorded today is under that name. In 2006, he performed at North East Sticks Together. His brother, former MIT scientist Brian Alexander Whitman and co-founder of The Echo Nest, is also an electronic musician and sound artist under name Blitter.[1]

The composer, and sometimes-Sonic Youth member, is featured. Jim O'Rourke (born January 18, 1969) is an Irish-American musician and record producer. He was long associated with the Chicago experimental and improv scene. Around 2000 he relocated to New York before moving on to Tokyo, Japan where he currently resides.

From "Free Speech Radio News": "After years of public outcry from citizens, Pakistan’s government today announced it would raise the issue of drone strikes at the United Nations. The government has publicly condemned the strikes, but has allegedly given the okay in private to the US to launch drone attacks. From Islamabad, Malik Ayub Sumbal has more for FSRN. In a weekly briefing here in Islamabad, Foreign Office spokesperson Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry called the drone strikes a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and a violation of international law. The decision to fight drone attacks through the UN comes after a recommendation from a national political conference. Chaundhry said the Foreign Office has already initiated the process in consultation with their UN delegations in Geneva and New York. He denied there is an agreement with the US on the use of drones in Pakistan’s territory; however, the United States maintains the strikes are made with the full cooperation and support of civil and military establishments. Just last Friday, a US drone strike near the Afghan border killed several suspected militants, including a high-ranking member of a US-branded terrorist organization. The Ninth Circuit federal appeals court said on Sept. 10 that a lawsuit accusing Google of illegal wiretapping could proceed. The court defined "radio" as just FM and AM, and not all the other radio waves. The "Off The Hook" show discusses the ruling in this excerpt.

Radia Show 441: Postcards from Italy by Gianmarco Del Re (for Radio Papesse, Firenze, IT) "Radia" is an international network of 23 station interested in new and forgotten ways of making radio. Each week, one station makes a show for all the others. This week: "Taking cue from Gianmarco Del Re’s column on Fluid Radio, which profiles the most interesting sound artists and musicians currently operating within the Italian electroacoustic scene, musicians Giulio Aldinucci and Attilio Novellino have launched the Postcard from Italy project. They invited the Aips collective artists to take parte in the project asking them to take field recordings in their own respective cities and areas, which were then redistributed amongst the group on an anonymous basis in order to be reworked and processed. The resulting sounds ended up being a multifaceted sonic snapshot of the Italian peninsula, articulated into an album to be released this September, a live event that took place in London July21st, 2013 at Café OTO and an installation at SoundFjord. This Radia Show was then produced by the original inspirator of the whole project, Gianmarco Del Re. He assembled fragments of the compositions included the Aips album, mixed them together with the original field recordings, excerpts from the installation sounds and recordings form the live shows of the Aips collective at CaféOTO and Power Lunches. The result is a 28minutes compendium of processed sketches from Italy.

The measure follows a number of incidents criticized by press freedom advocates, including surveillance of journalists at the AP, prosecution of a Fox News reporter and threatening charges against a New York Times contributor if he doesn’t testify against a source. While the committee members approved the measure 13-to-5 on Thursday, they struggled to agree on who should count as a journalist and receive the law’s protections. California Democrat Dianne Feinstein pressed her colleagues to narrow the bill to only cover what she called “real reporters.” "Should this privilege apply to anyone? To a 17-year-old who drops out of high school, buys a website for 5 dollars and starts a blog? Or should it apply to journalists who have bona fide credentials?" Other lawmakers, including Alabama Republican Jeff Sessions thought no journalist who reveals any type of classified information should be protected. And Texas Republican John Cornyn suggested that the law only cover journalists who are US citizens. Both of those amendments were defeated. This live set by The Ashcan Orchestra was recorded by Issue Project Room in November 2012. Employing everything from children's hand bells, tape recorders, discarded televisions, homemade circuitry, light bulbs and mirrors, to more widely accepted noisemakers, Ashcan creates new music in forms more familiar than the instrumentation would lead the listener to believe.
