FSRN’s Alice Ollstein takes us to a farm called Three Part Harmony, where we explore what urban, organic agriculture could do both for a community and the environment they live in, and how US policy could better support it. Each week, one station organizes a show for all the others. This week: "In 2012 I – Max Höfler – bought some guns for an Austrian art association called Forum Stadtpark. The purchase of these guns established a situation that focuses on the most abstract entity we do have in our today society and that concerns us all: Money and all these financial issues that are considered as the basic structure of our society. To experience this abstract relation between us and the finance I transformed it into a concrete situation. To understand the situation which I wanted to establish with this purchase, you have to know three things: 1.) The Forum Stadtpark spent a lot of money for these rifles: 10.000€. 2.) These guns still work. That means that you can still use them and that they had been already used before. 3.) The value of these rifles will rise because they aren’t produced any longer and they are rare. So they are some kind of a financial investment for the Forum Stadtpark as well. After I bought these guns, I put them into a vitrine in the foyer of the Forum Stadtpark where they still are as an sort of permanent virulent inventory that questions how we can get out of this paradoxical situation. Now in 2013 three artist – Andreas Heller, Johannes Schrettle and me (Max Höfler) – want to transform this situation into a new form: into some sort of a performance called “IG Sterben”. Stephen Vitiello is a visual and sound artist, currently included in the "Soundings" sound art show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Originally a punk guitarist he is influenced by video artist Nam June Paik who he worked with after meeting in 1991. He has collaborated with Pauline Oliveros, Scanner aka Robin Rimbaud, and Frances-Marie Uitti as well as visual artists Julie Mehretu, Tony Oursler and Joan Jonas. Vitiello was a resident artist at the World Trade Center in 1999 where he recorded sounds from the 91st floor using home-built contact microphones, as well as photocells and used that material in his Bright and Dusty Things album (New Albion Records) as well as in an installation environment, World Trade Center Recordings: Winds After Hurricane Floyd. Vitiello has had solo exhibitions of sound installations, photographs and drawings at museums and galleries including The Project, NY, Museum 52, Los Angeles and Galerie Almine Rech, Paris. Group exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial, the 2006 Sydney Biennale and Ce qui arrive (Unknown Quantity) curated by Paul Virilio at the Cartier Foundation, Paris. CD releases include The Sound of Red Earth (Kaldor Public Art Projects), Box Music with Machinefabriek (12k), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub Rosa) and Buffalo Bass Delay (Hallwalls). Vitiello is currently an associate professor in the Kinetic Imaging department at Virginia Commonwealth University.
