From "Democracy Now!": "Lavabit, an encrypted email service believed to have been used by National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, has abruptly shut down. The move came amidst a legal fight that appeared to involve U.S. government attempts to win access to customer information. In a Democracy Now! broadcast exclusive, we are joined by Lavabit owner Ladar Levison and his lawyer, Jesse Binnall. "Unfortunately, I can’t talk about it. I would like to, believe me," Levison says. "I think if the American public knew what our government was doing, they wouldn’t be allowed to do it anymore." In a message to his customers last week, Levison said: "I have been forced to make a difficult decision: to become complicit in crimes against the American people, or walk away from nearly 10 years of hard work by shutting down Lavabit." Levison said he was barred from discussing the events over the past six weeks that led to his decision. Soon after, another secure email provider called Silent Circle also announced it was shutting down."

Julia Wierski from Prometheus Radio Project, a community radio activist group, will explain how to apply, and why. Radio journalists John Anderson and Paul Riismandel will also retell the history behind the efforts to allow the public access to its own airwaves. Michael Wise, the President of the Board at WBCR-LP in Great Barrington, MA, discusses the struggles to keep a LPFM station on the air. There will also be interviews with applicants for LPFM stations, from Twin Cities Community Radio in Minnesota, and CHIRP in Chicago. The show will also feature historic interviews and audio clips about how a few thousand pirate radio stations, other activism, Washington lobbying, and court fights, got the low-power FM laws in place. Dharma Dailey, formerly of Prometheus Radio Project, co-hosts with Tom Roe. The FCC holds a webinar Aug. 20 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. to educate anyone interested in applying.

From "Free Speech Radio News": "Officials in the UK and Brazil are demanding answers after British police detained journalist Glen Greenwald's partner at Heathrow Airport yesterday, under the provision of an anti-terrorism law. David Miranda was traveling from Germany back home to Brazil after meeting with Greenwald's colleague, Laura Poitras. Greenwald and Poitras are most recently known for coverage of massive US and UK spying after intelligence contractor Edward Snowden provided them with thousands of secret documents from the National Security Agency. After numerous questions on the topic were lobbed at U.S. Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest today, he acknowledged that U.S. authorities were aware of the UK plan to stop Miranda. “There was a heads up that was provided by the British government. So again, this is something we had an indication was likely to occur. But it's not something that we requested, and it's something that was done specifically by the British law enforcement officials there.” Schedule 7 of the UK's Terrorism Act grants police broad powers to search and detain individuals for no more than nine hours. All of Miranda's electronics were confiscated and he was released, after eight hours and 55 minutes.

On Aug. 21, 2013, the Nixon Library at the National Archives just released the last 340 hours of the infamous White House tapes recorded by then-President Richard Nixon, whose estate lost a three-year court battle to have the them destroyed. "Enthusiasm! The Dombass Symphony" (1930) is possibly Dziga Vertov's most revolutionary achievement: a symphony of abstract industrial noise for which a specially designed giant mobile recording system was constructed (it weighed over a ton) in order to capture the din of mines, furnaces and factories. For Vertov, the introduction of sound film didn't mean talkies, but the opportunity to collage, montage and splice together constructions of pure environmental noise. Denis Arkadievitch Kaufman (b. Bialyskov, Poland 1986 - d. Moscow 1954) adopted the name Dziga Vertov as an adolescent; a futurist pseudonym loosely translated as "spinning top". He studied piano, violin and psychoneurology, at the same time writing poetry and recording natural sounds with a phonograph for his Laboratory of Hearing (1916). By 1918, he had begun to work w ith cinema and - with his future wife Elisaveta Svilova - created the group Kinoks [Kino-Eye]. Concentrating on documentary films, they championed "what the eye doesn't see" . Between 1925 and 1929, he developed the idea of Radio-Pravda [Radio-Truth] and Radio-Ear (from "I hear").
