John Mason is reporting in the Register-Star Hudson Mayor Tiffany Martin Hamilton announced Tue., Apr. 5, the appointment of a new panel to study the city's North Bay. The committee will take part in a public meeting to be held Sun., May 1, to discuss the future of the North Bay area. In addition to the members of the new steering committee, representatives of the Columbia Land Conservancy and other community groups will be present for the outdoor meeting, to be held at the corner of Front and Dock streets. Subjects to be discussed include how best to utilize the land formerly occupied by the Furgary Boat Club, how to create access to the river for kayaking and fishing and the CLC's vision for the North Bay Recreation and Natural Area. The steering committee will serve as a liaison between the community, city government and the New York state Department of State, in an the effort to have the city’s Local Waterfront Revitalization Program, adopted by the Common Council in 2011, approved at the state and federal levels. Wave Farm announced Tue., Apr. 5, the 10 artists and projects selected for the 2016 Wave Farm Residency Program. Each artist will live and work for 10 days on site at the Wave Farm Study Center in Acra. The residency season spans May through October, and provides artists with the opportunity to concentrate on new transmission works and conduct research about the genre. Resident artists perform, are interviewed on-air and create playlists for broadcast on WGXC 90.7-FM. In a statement released Tuesday, Wave Farm Executive Director Galen Joseph-Hunter said the 2016 residents were chosen from a pool of applications received from artists in nine countries and 13 states. The Mid-Hudson News Network is reporting Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders said Mon., Apr. 4, the Indian Point nuclear power plant should be shut down “in a safe and responsible way.” The United States must transform its energy system “away from nuclear power and fossil fuels and towards energy efficiency and renewable energies like wind, solar, geothermal and biomass which will provide safe and clean energy and create millions of good-paying jobs,” The pro-Indian Point group, New York Affordable Reliable Electricity Alliance, disputed Sanders’ contentions. The group's spokesman said Indian Point has a history of safely producing electricity, and if Indian Point were shuttered, "...our carbon emissions would spike, and hard-working New Yorkers would pay a lot more for electricity.” Sanders' comments were made a week after the discovery of missing or decaying bolts and recent water leaks at the Buchanan facility. Casey Seiler at Capitol Confidential reports the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision has gone locavore, replacing several out-of-state items on its prison menus in favor of $1.8 million in purchases of state-grown and -produced food and beverages “such as apples, potatoes, beans, yogurt, ice cream, and milk.” The Buy NY program also boosts local food purchases for New York hospitals and colleges. DOCCS also eliminated another dish: a barely digestible food product known as “The Loaf” given to prisoners as a form of punishment, will no longer be served. Clinton gave her stump speech in a packed Cohoes High School gym, after meeting in Albany with Democratic legislators and/or potential Clinton delegates at the national convention. Meanwhile, about 150 Bernie Sanders supporters held a rally at midday outside the Capitol in a snowstorm. At 10:30 a.m. April 7, Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz will be in Scotia at Mekeel Christian Academy at 36 Sacandaga Road in the gymnasium. Business Insider reports that Apple has a patent for technology that automatically scans songs streaming online to edit out any swear words in the lyrics. The patent, named "Management, Replacement and Removal of Explicit Lyrics during Audio Playback" was filed by Apple in September 2014, according to Business Insider, which says Apple could replace so-called swear words with a beeping noise, or with non-explicit lyrics on streaming music or in audio books. Apple's Beats 1 online radio station already only plays non-explicit edits of songs. The patent does not explain if the technology could be used by other groups, such as governments, to change political messages in songs or stories.
