4’33” is John Cage’s most famous work, composed in 1952 for any instrument (or combination of instruments), the three-movement score instructs the performer not to play the instrument for the entire duration of the piece. The first movement is 30 seconds; the second is two minutes and 23 seconds, and the third is one minute and 40 seconds. The work, commonly referred to as “four minutes and thirty-three seconds of silence,” consists of the sounds of the performance environment. From February 8-10, the New World Symphony will present a spectacular three-day festival dedicated to the music and ideas of John Cage, "Making the Right Choices: A John Cage Centennial Celebration," and are inviting folks to participate, In addition to three evenings of concerts, NWS will host a video installation "NWS: 4’33”," under creation by artist Mikel Rouse, which will consist of contributed video performances.
Here's how to submit a contribution, which must be received by February 1, 2013.
• Create a video-recording of your own performance. Please adhere to Cage's original timing for each of this work’s three movements—which are 30”, 2'40", and 1'20"—keeping your performance as close to 4'33" as possible. Do not incorporate any sort of verbal introduction.
• Upload your video to YouTube.
• Once your video is live on YouTube, go to the NWS: 4'33" YouTube site and click on the "Subscribe" button. Your video will be screened and added to our Playlist.

Making a Record (Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald)
January 18 - February 17, 2013 at Audio Visual Arts
Opening: January 18, 6-8 p.m.

"Making a Record (Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald) centers around a series of four interviews the artists conducted in 2009 with gemologist and jewelry designer Karen L. Davidson, talking about the stones used to record her voice. The artists made lithic tools from the four gemstones and etched a series of unique lathe-cut dub plates of each interview. Each of the four gemstone styli were given to Karen to use as elements in four pieces she designed. These handmade pieces are composed of the stylus, crystal slices or stones in their natural states, cut gems and 22k gold. Each of the four pieces can be worn as a pendant. Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy, Pierre Huyghe, Marina Warner, and Jamieson Webster were invited by the artists to listen to the records and wear the pendants, exhibiting them for varied lengths of time. The information contained on the records was transmitted through casual conversations and occurrences that took place during their daily lives. A record of these instances has been contributed by each individual and will be presented over the course of the show at AVA."

Melissa Dubbin and Aaron S. Davidson began working collaboratively in 1998. Recent solo shows include exhibitions at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Høvikodden, Norway (2012), and The Living Art Museum, Reykjavik, Iceland (2012). Their work is currently on view in the group show The Unspecific Index, at 601Artspace, New York, NY. They will be in residence at Recess in Soho in late March 2013. "Out come the wolves" is the second sound piece of Nicolas Perret and Cédric Anglaret's project The four seasons of Paanjärvi in which, since 2009, they focus on the soundscape of the small russian village of Paanajärvi. Isolated in the thick primary forest of oriental Karelia, Paanajärvi has somehow fallen out of the time. Its inhabitants, the last custodians of the disappearing Karelian culture, live a tough life that is strongly bond to the nature surrounding them. Winters are harsh in Paanajärvi. At this latitude, the sun doesn't show much and temperatures remain way below freezing for many months. As winter progresses food gets rare for the wolves. Out of the forest they approach the village at night to attack dogs, that the villagers try to protect by all means. As long as dogs are barking the wolves are still far; once they are silent they are nearby. In the winter of 2012, 23 dogs were eaten by the wolves in Paanajärvi.

"Radia" is a network of international stations including free103point9/WGXC, interested in new and forgotten ways to make radio. Each week, one station makes a show for all the others. Joel Chadabe, composer, author, is an internationally recognized pioneer in the development of interactive music systems. He has concertized widely since 1969. As president of Intelligent Music from 1983-1994, he was responsible for the development and publication of a wide range of innovative and historically important software, including M and Max. As author, his book 'Electric Sound: The Past and Promise of Electronic Music', published by Prentice Hall in November 1996, was the first comprehensive overview of the history of electronic music. His articles on electronic music have appeared in respected journals and publications internationally. Chadabe is currently Professor Emeritus at State University of New York at Albany; Visiting Faculty at New York University; and Founder and President of Electronic Music Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that organizes concerts and other events and disseminates information and materials relating to the history and current practice of electronic music.

For the 30th anniversary of “Shortwavemusic” the label created a reel-to-reel version of the project for a Jan. 1 release. They’ve also made the music free and streamable online, and this show will tune it in. Plus, Myke Dodge Weiskopf curates "ShortWaveMusic," traveling abroad and recording shortwave radio and turning it in to beautiful collages, which will be heard here. Plus, a few Sublime Frequencies will be tuned in.

Staged at the Hermann Nitsch Museum in 2012, Heinz Cibulka did his "Digitalkompost" performance by moving and arranging organic matter from one open container to another. GX Jupitter-Larsen provided a live soundtrack using his own containers, two amplified suitcases.

For a special issue of Harlot magazine guest editors Jon Stone and Steph Ceraso are considering the intersection of sound and rhetoric: "How does sound—natural or artificial, made or heard, deliberate or unconscious—figure into everyday persuasion? In turn, how might a rhetorical perspective help us think through everyday interactions with sound?" They have an open call for all sorts of sound projects. Submissions are due by January 15 at editors@harlotofthearts.org.

Polish professor Wojciech Mazurczyk discovered a way to encrypt secret messages into silence on Skype to hide calls from hackers, authorities, or other prying eyes. Mazurczyk, from the Warsaw University of Technology found a way to hide data in the 70-bit packets that Skype sends by default when it’s detecting silence, the moments in between speech when you’re not talking. "There are concerns that Skype calls can be intercepted and analysed," says Mazurczyk at the Institute of Telecommunications in Warsaw, Poland in New Scientist. SkypeHide will let users cloak extra, non-chat messages during a call. New American reports, "Microsoft does have a patent application in process called “Legal Intercept” that enables the ability to record “any kind of voice-over-Internet-protocol (VoIP) communications” by re-routing messages over “a path that includes a recording agent.” Read the full story in New Scientist.

The Megapolis Festival, a weekend-long, multi-venue event dedicated to the craft of DIY audio creation is looking for performances, presentations, and workshops featuring audio of all kinds for this year's model in New York City, April 19-21, 2013 at the New School. They are looking for, "circuit bending / noisemaker constructions, slumber parties, free-form audio editing sessions, interactive demonstrations, experimental musical practice and theory, film with a heavy audio component, musical performances, subversive audio tours, (un-boring) lectures, and whatever else your brain births." The theme is tourism. Some details:

"Session: 90- or 45-minute-long presentations, workshops, and the like by one or more presenters. We provide the venue. Megapolis features five 90-minute blocks on Saturday and Sunday during which time multiple sessions will happen at once. Presenters may be asked to repeat their session over the course of the two days.
Tour or Soundwalk: One or more presenters leading 15 or fewer attendees outside of festival venues. You choose the length of time on Saturday or Sunday. Usually these meet in front of the festival headquarters.
Performance: Performances take place either Friday, Saturday or Sunday night OR Saturday or Sunday day. The nighttime performance are usually ~45 minutes and take place inside. The daytime performances take place inside or out and take place during a 90-minute block during other events. Daytime performances can be part performance/part presentation. NO HIPPIE MANTRAS.
Installation: Self-sustaining and sound-based (obviously) pieces that stay put. Electricity or not is fine. For presentation inside festival headquarters and associated spaces. We encourage a period of ‘activation’ or interactive audience participation with your installation during the festival.
Miscellaneous (our favorite): Booths inside and outside festival venues, temporary radio stations, 1-800 numbers, crowd experiments, overnight or lunchtime gatherings, big wheel races captured through contact microphones and broadcast through giant speakers – essentially anything else mind-blowing you can think of outside of the above categories."

"Pirates Week," Ragnar Daneskjold's weekly-then-monthly chronicle of shortwave and FM radio activity is back to a weekly format. "I’m determined to bring it back as the weekly show it needs to be," he says on the latest episode of the show. "Only this time I’m going to produce it the way I originally envisioned it. A little more loose, not as polished and the length will be variable depending on the amount of material each week." Daneskjold started the show in 2005, but took it off the air because of tendinitis and carpal tunnel in 2011, and then resumed as a monthly show. free103point9 Online Radio and WGXC 90.7-FM currently air "Pirates Week" on the second Saturday of the month at 2 p.m. A timeslot for the new weekly version of the show will be announced soon.

Marko Peljhan. After theatre and radio studies at the University of Ljubljana, Marko Peljhan founded Projekt Atol, an organisation working with visual arts and communications technologies, in 1992. In 1995 he co-founded LJUDMILA (Ljubljana Digital Media Lab), now one of Europe’s most significant cultural and tactical media labs. In 1997 Peljhan’s ongoing Makrolab, launched at documenta in Germany, provoked artistic and scientific reflection on sustainable technologies and energies. Radio is key to Peljhan’s research: he founded and coordinates the Insular Technologies initiative, which proposed an autonomous high frequency radio network long before wireless internet. Radio underpins performative works such as Solar (1997), Signal-Sever (1999 - 2006) and SPEKTR (2007). Peljhan is Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies, Media Arts and Technology Program, California Nanosystems Institute, University of California, Santa Barbara, USA; he is also a licensed radio operator and trained pilot.

Arctic Perspective Initiative (API) is a non-profit, international group of individuals and organizations, founded by Marko Peljhan and Matthew Biederman, whose goal is to promote the creation of open authoring, communications and dissemination infrastructures for the circumpolar region. Its aim is to work with, learn from, and empower the North and Arctic Peoples through open source technologies and applied education and training. By creating access to these technologies while promoting the creation of shared communications and data networks without costly overheads, continued and sustainable development of autonomous culture, traditional knowledge, science, technology and education opportunities for peoples in the North and Arctic regions is enabled.

Based in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, founded back in 1969 in ex-Yugoslavia, with 24 hours program and more than 200 regular contributors today, Radio Student is one of the oldest and the biggest independent and non-commercial radio stations in Europe, with a long tradition in radio art and the diverse field of contemporary investigative art practices, especially through Ministry of Experiment project in 90′s and 00′s, and today through our Open radio art theory investigative platform RADAR.

Over the past ten years, Soundwalk Collective has won international recognition for their work of abstracting and re-composing narrative sound pieces through fragments of reality, and by forging evocative journeys in sound that are exhibited in the form of sound installation and performance. This Anniversary Series will showcase selected works that have both defined and defied the soundscape genre. At noon on Saturdays in the month of January, Soundwalk Collective will showcase eight places on the planet, and their unique sounds. These programs were broadcast first in Nov., 2012 on Resonance FM in London.

Soundwalk Collective is an international art collective based in Berlin and New York City. Since 2000 they have been sonic nomads, embarking on never ending journeys from the desolate land of Bessarabia to the desert of Rub al Khali. Radio Nova from Oslo in Norway has joined the Radia network. "Radia" is a group of radio station seeking new and forgotten ways to make radio. Each week one station makes a show to share with all the others, including free103point9 Online Radio and WGXC 90.7-FM (where it airs 10 a.m. every Saturday). Radius Episode 35 is hosted by Hugo Paquete. Hugo Paquete (b. 1979, Portugal) is an Intermedia and sound artist, professor of sound art at Escola Superior Artística do Porto, Portugal (ESAP), and is the head of the Institute of Viral Sonology. His research uses concepts about space and microtonality as visual and audible ecosystems according to spatial and psychological characteristics. He uses technical elements and practices from field recording to computer generated sound synthesizing and audio spatialization in his work.

Radius broadcasts "Radial Transference." "Radial Transference" pretends to understand the possible relationship between two distinct spaces. These spaces, recorded using a field recording technique, with transfers and contamination between them on an atomic scale, reflect conflict, causality and turbulence. The piece generates a compositional sound universe as an entropic dynamic locus of a new ontology. Hugo Paquete explores granular projections of sound in order to build small phrases that articulate and turn over the piece with rhythmic variations and noise. Read more.

Radius will transmit "Radial Transference" for four consecutive Wednesdays (January 2, 9, 16, 23) and on Thursday, January 17 to coincide with Art’s Birthday at 1 p.m. CST. Radius is an experimental radio broadcast platform based in Chicago, IL, USA. Radius features a new project monthly with statements by artists who use radio as a primary element in their work. Radius provides artists with live and experimental formats in radio programming. The goal is to support work that engages the tonal and public spaces of the electromagnetic spectrum. All audio works are broadcasted locally on 88.9-FM with a secondary stream online.

The Distribution Grant for New York State Artists, a regrant program for the New York State Council on the Arts, Electronic Media and Film, provides support for the distribution of new works in film, video, sound, new-media, and media-installation. Grant awards assist artists in making recently completed works available to public audiences. The following nine projects were selected during a competitive panel review process:

Jason Bernagozzi, Citystream

Citystream is a multi-channel video installation about the city of Syracuse as a complex organism going through liminal states of being and change. The forced pixel abstraction process blends together and ruptures images of people and architecture, reflecting an evolving dialogue about what the city is and what it could become. Distribution funding will be used to acquire additional installation equipment and assist with installation touring expenses.

eteam, The Cruise

The Cruise is a 3.5-hour sound work, a monologue, which chronicles the experience of a woman whose time is spent as a janitor and waitress in a cruise ship's tearoom. Her recorded flow of consciousness is divided into six episodes, each one representing another day, in which the character attempts to follow a strict, mechanical routine, but can’t – as her thoughts keep escaping. Distribution of The Cruise will include the dispersal of 100 solar powered mp3 playback devices for the work. Once a listener experiences the work he/she is instructed to pass the mp3 player onto to a new audience member and encouraged to update the physical location of their specific players on The Cruise website, enabling the artists to track the work's journey.

Shaun Irons & Lauren Petty, Atmospheres & Accidental Ghosts

Atmospheres & Accidental Ghosts is a two-channel generative video and sound installation, which randomly reconfigures and activates a perpetually shifting selection of media. Distribution funding will support the creation of a self-contained touring kit, as well as an online resource about the project include video samples, still images, descriptive text, and artist statements, including technical and touring information in order to secure new venues and exhibition opportunities.

David Linton, The Bicameral Research Sound & Projection System "Cortical Degausser"

First installed at the conclusion of a 2011 Residency at the Clocktower Gallery, Cortical Degausser is a site-specific Intermedia installation in which visitors experience pulsating harmonic bands of colored light and synchronous sound mediated via parabolic diffusion screens. This immersive relational environment stimulates neurological mechanisms within the viewer's own visual cortex triggering the spontaneous display of self animating geometric patterns. Distribution funds will support equipment acquisition in order to make additional installations of Cortical Degausser possible.

Paul Lovelace & Jessica Wolfson, Radio Unnameable

Radio Unnameable is a documentary film focused on the story of disc jockey Bob Fass and his innovative use of the airwaves at WBAI in New York City. Distribution funds will support screening events and the creation of supplementary educational materials. In conjunction with the project touring, Bob Fass will remotely host a radio program at local stations in communities where the film is screening. Lovelace and Wolfson will also expand the film's website as a platform featuring profiles of independent radio stations around the nation: community, college, web, and pirate. In addition, the website will make available content from Bob Fass’s audio archive that was unable to be presented in the film.

LoVid, iParade#2: Unchanged When Exhumed

iParade#2: Unchanged When Exhumed is the second in a series of locative experimental works distributed by LoVid as smartphone apps, called iParade. iParade uses GPS data and includes video, sound, and texts that are accessible only in specific geographic locations. LoVid's distribution plan includes a website, an update to the iParade app, outreach to festivals, exhibition, and public presentation venues.

Jillian McDonald, Valley of the Deer

Shot in Dufftown, Scotland, the natural landscape, traditional highland dress and music, oral folklore and local legend, real and imagined, figure prominently in this experimental video work. Distribution funds will provide audiences with a new means of access to the work through a series of stills brought to life with the augmented reality application, Layar.

Kris Perry, Machines

Machines is comprised of large kinetic sound sculptures crafted from old industrial machinery and scrap metal to create functional instrumentation employed by performing artists to create collaborative and improvisational composition. Funds will support the design and creation of promotional materials and DVD documentation of the project, which will be distributed to potential exhibition and performance venues. Web-based documentation of the project will also serve as a tool as Perry pursues additional public presentation opportunities for Machines.

Laura Vitale, Parts 1-6

Parts 1-6 is a series of six vignettes which each explore the relationship between sound and image through material play. The footage was created through an exploration of sound through materials, and through an exploration of the landscape in White Sands National Monument. Distribution support will assist in outreach to festivals and galleries, as well as DVD distribution and other publication formats including an LP release of the work's audio content.

"On this, the day that the Mayan calendar runs out of time, I am pleased to enter into the timeless acoustiplasm of SilenceRadio a new voice castaway, 'In The End.'

SilenceRadio is a project sponsored by l’Atelier de création sonore radiophonique , a Brussels-based independent public-funded organization founded in 1996. ACSR’s main purpose is to help beginning producers and artists with their first projects in the realms of creative radio and audio. ACSR is also responsible for a festival named Radiophonic, whose last edition was in 2007, yet with a welcome resurrection promised for November 2013.

SilenceRadio was initiated in 2005 by sound artist-engineer Irvic D’Olivier, in collaboration with (among others) Etienne Noiseau."
