free103point9 transmission artists 31 Down recently worked on "Dusk: The Sound of Bats," is a solar powered “bat detector” during their residency at Wave Farm. The installation uses the high frequency radio transmissions of the bats living at Wave Farm as its subject matter. Bats emit sounds via echolocation, at typically two or three times higher pitch than that which the human ear can hear. Using an ultrasonic microphone paired with a customized scanning device, 31 Down will translate the bats' transmissions into audible frequencies. This show will feature bat recordings they made during their residency.

Tom Roe
Tom Roe is a sound transmission artist sometimes known as DJ Dizzy. He co-founded online/microradio station free103point9 in Brooklyn and the Wave Farm, a 30-acre facility in Acra that serves as a study center, retreat, and avant-music performance site. Roe performs with transmitters and receivers using multiple bands, as well as prepared CDs, vinyl records, and various electronics. He creates radio soundscapes using locally available frequencies, often to the beat of manipulated pop song samples.

Jason Broome
Singer-songwriter and frequent Chronogram contributor Jason Broome has performed and recorded with the independent rock bands the Westport Sunrise Sessions, Tulula, and Gilding the Lily, all of whom have released recordings on his Diablo Dulce label. He has toured Europe and the US, contributed to film and TV soundtracks, and performed to raise money for a variety of charity and advocacy organizations. Perhaps described as avant-Americana, Broome's approach blends rootsy sounds with acerbic experimentalism.

Thomas Jack Hilton
Transplanted Texan Thomas Jack Hilton has also contributed often to Chronogram; as a talented photographer. But his flair for the lens is only one of his many artistic talents: In addition to also being an accomplished painter and illustrator, using found objects Hilton creates beautifully strange and striking sculptures that bring to mind the work of French Dadaist Marcel Duchamp and American installation artists Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz. He has a sculpture in this show.

Based on the concept of the 1966 work by Max Neuhaus titled, Public Supply (audio) (text) -telephones can be linked to a live radio broadcast via new technologies in order to create a live dialogue between activists social groups during public demonstrations and events. Max Neuhaus's revolutionary work was sponsored by WBAI in New York City and has been recreated in other cities. communication in real time is essential to the relaying and coverage of live, current events during public demonstrations, rallies and marches. It is important to be able to have immediate media coverage of such events in order to speed content delivery as well as eliminate any buffer or editing of information that may be imposed by competing corporate sponsored media.

This system is a communication device for participants in such social demonstrations as well as a way to inform the outside public of what is happening in real time for those involved.

Conflux Festival: Conflux is the annual New York festival for contemporary psychogeography, the investigation of everyday urban life through emerging artistic, technological and social practice. At Conflux, visual and sound artists, writers, urban adventurers and the public gather for four days to explore their urban environment. People from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures come together at the festival to re-imagine the city as a playground, a space for positive change and an opportunity for civic engagement. The Village Voice describes Conflux as a “network of maverick artists and unorthodox urban investigators…making fresh, if underground, contributions to pedestrian life in New York City, and upping the ante on today’s fight for the soul of high-density metropolises.” How it works: Telephone calls (public phones, cell phones, home phones calling a toll free number) to a main computer server are recorded and streamed in real time over the Internet. This live audio stream is also broadcast on a low power FM transmitter to the local area of the event for people to listen to via a wireless radio. If no one is calling in to make a report or statement, the stream of live content is paused and archived phone calls are broadcast over the Web and airwaves; this mechanism is used to avoid "dead air" on the radio.

Tevere is an artist and Associate Professor of Media Culture at the College of Staten Island, CUNY. Nevarez is an artist, DJ, and musician.

WSIA 88.9 FM was founded in the mid-1970s by a group of students at The College of Staten Island, CUNY who ran some wire to the cafeteria and started spinning records. They then applied for a license and have been broadcasting regularly since August 31, 1981. For over 25 years WSIA has featured a variety of programming, and the CSI students who run the station have always been committed to being new and innovative, and serving the Staten Island and Greater New York community. Junko Hemmi, originally from Japan, has been composing music in the USA for the past decade. Early collaborations include Meme Shell and Candy Cane where she would write,play bass, and sing in the spirit of the shoegaze music style.

Her newest project -- The Dove and the Buttercup Dream -- which can be heard here: http://www.myspace.com/thedovethebuttercupdream and utilizes and experiments with more acoustic sounds such as xylophone, bells, and music boxes. Presently, her main inspiration is nature and dreamscapes.

Evidence is a creative partnership between composer/sound artists Stephan Moore and Scott Smallwood. "Spheres of Influence (working title)" is a performance/installation of both live-performed and pre-recorded sounds being broadcast through a number of radio transmitters all tuned to identical (or nearly-identical) frequencies. The audience is equipped with radio receivers, and then encouraged to explore the points of “indecision” that exist between the various transmitters. In this way, each audience member participates in the composition/editing of the final piece by performing the interplay between our broadcasted material and the indeterminate artifacts of the transmission/reception process inherent in the installation. On September 19th, Evidence's project will be streamed on the web via free103point9 Online Radio.

Printed Matter, Inc. presents The NY Art Book Fair, New York City's annual fair devoted to contemporary art books, art catalogues, artists' books, art periodicals, and 'zines. Over 120 international exhibitors, from major distributors and antiquarian dealers to independent publishers and artists, occupy a dual-level 20,000 square foot space. The Fair takes place 28 through 30 September, 2007, in the heart of Chelsea's gallery district at 548 West 22nd Street. Refocus, Re-title, Release: the Books of Martin Kippenberger is this year's feature exhibition. Curated by Philip Aarons and AA Bronson, this comprehensive exhibition presents over 150 publications by Martin Kippenberger.

Charlotte Scott works as CKUT's spoken word coordinator. She studied communications and culture at various Canadian universities before receiving her MA from Ryerson/York for a sound composition about acoustic community and environmental philosophy. Charlotte plays electric bass, cello, & glockenspiel and sings in a psychedelic rock band called Triceratreetops. She likes to wander around in forests.

Tianna Kennedy is the Brooklyn Program Director of free103point9. In addition to her administrative role with free103point9, Tianna is, herself, a curator and transmission artist. She also plays cello, recording and performing frequently. Tianna co-founded the August Sound Coalition in 2004 and the Empty Vessel Project in 2005. Tianna holds a MA from NYU's Performance Studies program. She frequently teaches free103point9 Radio labs, and has presented at Location 1, NY; at Pixelache particle/wave (hybrid radio workshop), Helsinki, Finland; at Deep Wireless's Radio Without Boundaries, Toronto, Canada; and NYC Grassroots Media conferences. In 2006/7, Tianna taught �Radio Culture� and �Sight, Sound, and Motion� at Brooklyn College.
Kathy Kennedy, CKUT
Kathy Kennedy is a community artist with a background in classical singing. She is a founding member of Studio XX, the digital media centre for women, and artistic director of the innovative women's choir, Choeur Maha. Her large scale works for radio and live voices have been performed at Place des Arts, for the inauguration of the Vancouver Public Library and at Lincoln Center's Out of Doors festival, among other places.

"viBeSongMakers is a specialized program that provides the tools for viBe Theater Alumnae to write, record and perform original songs. Through progressive, hands-on music education and pre-professional mentorship, participants develop their creative voices through music, learn basic music theory and appreciation, and build confidence through collaboration and performance. Under the guidance of skilled teaching artists, a small group of girls study different genres and styles of music, explore rhythm and poetry and learn to write original songs. The girls then record the songs professionally in a studio, culminating in a full-length CD of their original material and perform their music at various venues and festivals. The girls also work with graphic artists in development of the packaging as well as participate in the marketing for their CD, which helps them build a sense of independence and entrepreneurship."
