Warming will help and hurt New York farmers

Brian Nearing in the Albany Times-Union reports that New York farmers growing grapes may benefit from global warming, while dairy farmers may see less milk, officials from Cornell Institute for Climate Change and Agriculture told state lawmakers May 12. "We will have the water, and that is an opportunity for us," said Michael Hoffman, associate dean of Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. David Wolfe, a Cornell professor of plant and soil ecology, said warmer temperatures and a longer growing season have meant more soybeans and certain types of corn. But the downside of earlier warming in the spring, are late frosts, like in 2012, when the apple crop was hurt. Cornell's climate change institute started in September 2013 and now has 36 researchers and staff. Read the full story in the Albany Times-Union.
