DEADLINE FOR PRODUCER PROPOSALS AND STATION RUNWAY SUBMISSIONS

Since our September 15th launch, more than 2000 unique visitors have checked out the Localore Station Runway and details for how to get aboard this new initiative. We'll bring more than $1 million in CPB funding to support 10 station-based producer-led teams that help stations "go outside" of their walls and traditional reporting routines to tell untold stories across multiple platforms.

If you'd like to be one one of our lead Localore producers, you must submit proposals for project ideas at Localore.net by the November 10th deadline. By that same deadline, stations hoping to serve as Localore incubators must produce 3-5 minutes of media to upload to our Station Runway, where we're showcasing the creative culture and aspirations of potential incubators. (Note:  the sooner you get your media up, the more eyeballs you'll attract.) Up to 30 lead producers and incubator stations will be selected by December 2nd and invited to submit a second-round proposal. Final teams will be announced by late January, and projects will begin launching in March.

The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes has announced Information Sessions for two state-wide regrant programs in Electronic Media and Film.  Presentation Funds and Finishing Funds provide support to New York State-based non-profit organizations and artists for work in film, video, sound, new media and Web-based art.  Both programs are funded by the New York State Council on the Arts.

Presentation Funds offers partial support to non-profit organizations located in New York State for in-person appearances by independent artists working in film, video, sound, new media and Web-based art. The mission of the program is to encourage opportunities for conversations between artists and audiences, support the creative programming of independent media-makers, and help increase appreciation for electronic media and film as an art form throughout New York State.  Deadlines are four times a year, with the first deadline on December 1, 2011.

Finishing Funds provides support to New York State artists for the completion of film, video, sound, new media and Web-based art. Awards are made annually and range from $500 to $2,500. The postmark deadline for applications is March 15, 2012.

The Experimental Television Center is happy to announce that our electronic media arts grants programs have been given new homes. The Technical Assistance Program  will be managed by free103point9. The Presentation Funds and Finishing Funds Programs will be administered by The Arts Council of the Southern Finger Lakes.

ETC has been administering the Presentation Funds and Finishing Funds Programs since 1989, and the Technical Assistance Program since 1998. It has been an honor and a privilege to have had the opportunity to work with all of you over the years. ETC would also like to thank Electronic Media and Film at the New York State Council on the Arts which has steadily supported our efforts to help the media arts flourish.

ETC isn’t going away, but rather refocusing our programs. We have redesigned the ETC website, so if you haven’t visited in awhile, please take a look. We will be spending more time on the development of the Video History Project and working on preservation activities with our partner organizations at Migrating Media.

Experimental Television Center: 1969 – 2009 (5 DVD set with catalog), is an anthology of video art works created through the Residency Program since its inception in 1969 and includes the works of about 100 media artists. The collection was featured in 2011 at Anthology Film Archives. It was named top 100 DVDs for 2010 by LUX, the influential arts organization in London, UK. In 2011 the collection was named by LUX as one of 50 essential moving-image artists DVDs in publication. The collection is available through the well-known distributor of contemporary art Electronic Arts Intermix.

The complete library of artists’ works at ETC is being archived at the Rose Goldsen Archive of New Media. Under the sponsorship of the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections at the Carl Kroch Library at Cornell University, the archive is curated by Dr. Tim Murray, Director of Graduate Studies in Comparative Literature and Director for the Society for the Humanities at Cornell. The mission is to digitize the collection and provide multiple levels of access to the works and study materials for people internationally.

Pixel Palace is currently developing BASIC.fm a new radio station that will host Broadcast Art, Sound & Independent Culture as a series of monthly audio streams.

BASIC.fm aspires to be a space that can be inhabited by artists, curators, thinkers and interesting people with something to share and will be gradually be populated with work, projects, shows and archived events.

Pixel Palace is commissioning four new audio works for BASIC.fm. Each work will be hosted for a month on continuous play and the first commission will go live in November. We are seeking artists who use sound as a medium in unexpected, exciting and innovative ways. This may include work that may act in a similar way to hold music or radio and television test signals.

There is a one-off artist fee of £250 for each commissioned piece.

This call is open to all artists, musicians, field recordists and sonic artists regardless of nationality, age, or career stage.

Call for works 2011

The 2011 Phonurgia Nova prize is open. What makes it unique? The invitation to leave the well trodden tracks that hinder creativity and to find hitherto  unexplored ways of taking the listener on a new journey of attentive listening to the world of everyday and imaginary sound. It is an invitation to make way for new sound (Radio award). To discover new interactions between seeing and listening ( New media award). In short, this award (which attracted 142 candidates from 15 countries last year) has to do with CREATION... and the attentive exploration of sound.

It is not a music festival, although music may be one component of a piece - along with speech, voice, silence and all the other sounds of this world and beyond.

Two changes in the organisation of the 2011 edition to be noted :

– The group « Ars acoustica » (European Broadcasting Union) has become another of our partners and will distribute prize winning works world-wide, thus greatly expanding the potential number of listeners.
– The transfer of the two days of sound presentations open to the public to Gaïté Lyrique theatre in Paris, will allow a wider audience to participate in listening sessions, and the heated debates which follow. The list of prize winners  is often unpredictable and surprising : unknown names slip in beside names which we already know...

Appel à projets 2011

Le concours phonurgia nova 2011 se tiendra cette année à Paris, à la Gaïté Lyrique, les 10 et 11 décembre, durant deux journées "marathon" au cours desquelles on pourra découvrir un large panorama de la création radiophonique européenne et mondiale.

Qu'il récompense des professionnels ou bien de jeunes auteurs qui font leurs premiers pas dans ce domaine (Prix Pierre Schaeffer), ce concours que disputaient l'année dernière 142 candidats du 15 pays, reste avant tout un tremplin de la création. Et si le cadre arlésien du Musée Réattu est abandonné au profit de la nouvelle institution parisienne dédiée aux arts numériques, c'est qu'il fallait donner à ce rendez-vous, soutenu par Libération, la SACD, l'INA-GRM, le GMVL, Radio Campus France, la Semaine du son et l'Union Européenne de Radio-Télévision, une audience plus large.

Ce qui fait la singularité de ce concours demeure : il est une incitation à sortir des cadres habituels de production, à frayer hors des sentiers battus pour entrainer l'auditeur sur de nouveaux chemins d'écoute du réel et de l'imaginaire. Il est une invitation à tracer de nouvelles routes sonores (Prix radio). Un encouragement à expérimenter de nouveaux rapports entre l'oeil et l'oreille (Prix Nouveaux Médias).

Ce qui fait sa convivialité sera préservé aussi : les délibérations du jury se déroulent en public, dans le cadre d'écoutes collectives ou chacun peu prendre part à la discussion.

Pendant 2 jours, il faudra écouter, repérer, comparer, discuter, opposer, batailler - puis élire des lauréats ! - auxquels seront attribués 4 000 euros de Prix et des résidences de création à Arles, Lyon et Paris. Une certitude : comme chaque année depuis 1986, quel que soit le genre défendu (documentaire, fiction, formes acoustiques conceptuelles),  ou le dispositif médiatique employé,  la prime ira à l'éloquence sonore.

Ear to the Earth invites you to participate in one of our free New York Soundscape field recording workshops. For two days, participants will learn about listening to their environment, identifying soundmarks, and the art of field recording. Workshop participants will then experience field recording first hand as they mine their soundscape for unique sounds and record them for themselves.

The recordings gathered during the Brooklyn workshop will be featured during a special performance of Share, a collaborative performance environment at Issue Project Room. Recordings gathered during the Staten Island workshop will be woven into a performance at Snug Harbor by contemporary pianist Joe Kubera,  as part of the Ear to the Earth Festival.

Recordings from both workshops will be further used as part of a final work featuring sounds from all boroughs, called 100 x John. In honor of John Cage's 100th birthday, this piece will be modeled on his unique compositional techniques—using indeterminacy and New York sounds to create a true New York Soundscape.

The summer temperatures are climbing. You know you'll be dreaming of these days come shivery December. Make sure your ears keep warm this winter by signing up for AIR's Sounds Elemental intensive at Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center in NYC. It's happening December 12 - 16.

We just finished up a smashing summer session focusing on ”metal," with reviews like "…it was great to be surrounded by people who don't need an explanation for why [working with] sound is awesome" and "I feel like I have new ears for listening, a new toolkit for making sound." This time around, our focus is Wood.

Are you up for it? We're looking for ten producers open to learning unconventional approaches to assembling sound and telling story. Slots are already filling up!

This opportunity may be especially appealing to those working in traditional documentary formats eager to recalibrate their orientation to sound and craft.

Producers benefit from intensely individualized attention from renowned sound artists-teachers, Harvestworks’ Hans Tammen, and public radio producer and musician Brenda Hutchinson. New York _Times_ new media editor Amy O’Leary will also lead an afternoon mini-dive into audio slideshows - called "bang on," "cutting edge," and "the highlight of the week" by participants.

The cost is $700. A non-refundable $350 deposit is required upon acceptance. AIR members who live outside of New York City are eligible for a small stipend to help underwrite the cost of the intensive and travel to NYC.

Spectral Quartet is a composition by Woody Sullender, and is a web adaptation of the project Whispering Spectres, a series of FM micro-radio transmissions originally launched in NYC in 2010.

The audio content consists of filtered radio signals, culled from various web streams from the Internet. These signals are being passed through many "band pass filters", a type of equalizer that allows a small range of frequencies through while attenuating frequencies outside of this range. In effect, most of the audio signal is "erased" except for a narrow stratum of frequency material. This work highlights small, hidden musical moments that are occurring on radio, but are usually rendered inaudible by other elements in the sound.

Although the Internet can bridge disparate communities, our experience on the web is of a customized landscape, with content tailored to our ideological views, our shopping behaviors, our socio-economic demographics, etc.. Spectral Quartet literally re-unites these voices into a singularized, aestheticized, quiet moment.

Finishing Funds 2011

The Experimental Television Center is pleased to announce Finishing Funds 2011.

Finishing Funds provides media and new media artists with grants up to $2,500 to help with the completion of diverse and innovative moving-image and sonic art projects, and works for the Web and new technologies. Eligible forms include film and video as single or multiple channel presentation, computer‑based moving-imagery and sound works, installations and performances, interactive works and works for new technologies, DVD, multimedia and the Web. We also support new media, and interactive performance. Work must be surprising, creative and approach the various media as art forms; all genres are eligible, including experimental, narrative and documentary art works. Individual artists can apply directly to the program and do not need a sponsoring organization. Applicants must be residents of New York State; undergraduate students are not eligible.  The application requires a project description, resume and support materials, including a sample of the proposed project. Selection is made by a peer review panel. About $25,000 is awarded each year. Announcement is made in early June.

The program is supported in part by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a public agency.

Rabid Hands is pleased to present Sequence of Waves, the collective’s inaugural sound, visual and multi-media art exhibition. The exhibition is open to the public for one day only, on Saturday, January 29th at St. Cecilia’s Gallery in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and will include scheduled performances. Formerly a convent and school, St. Cecilia’s Gallery is now a hub for rotating art exhibitions and film screenings, effectively bringing life back into the three-story building.

Recognizing the potential for discovery and experimentation in the St. Cecilia building, Rabid Hands has gathered over 40 artists to transform this space during their two-week residency. Given the narrow hallways and cordoned off rooms, the architecture of the building does not inherently lend itself to one large, continuous visual space, nor does it necessarily encourage group investigation. Instead of approaching the architecture as an obstacle, artists will use sound as the organizing and uniting principle. Embracing complete freedom, Rabid Hands encourages all participating artists to look beyond the confines of their personal forms and methods and merge their dialogue with the broader group. While individual works can be seen, what will emerge, more importantly, is the story of how these artists can influence the outcome of each other’s work by way of true collaboration.

Works will vary from: a “red carpet” of bubble wrap weaving through the convent’s hallways; an amalgamation of the exhibition’s microphone cords ascending a three-story tall sculpture made of found materials in the central stairwell, poised for sonic and aerial performance; a robotically controlled symphony of recordings filling the convent’s chapel with sound, as well as many other collaborative projects.

Spectral Influence

Sound artist Will Schrimshaw has an exhibition opening at Access Space.
His project, Spectral Influence, aims to explore the way in which the
noises and lighting of the city we occupy influences our movements and
emotional relations with urban space and the others we share this
space with.

Urban environments constantly emit vibrational forces that affect the
bodies of their occupants, whether these be auditory or
electromagnetic forces, asserting a subliminal influence upon the
movements, physiological and emotional states of citizens. In response
to these diverse vibrational influences, a spectral mapping of the
city is being carried out in relation to the human bodies that
populate it and move throughout it. Spectral Influence aims to
establish a speculative and roaming research environment through
artistic practice and the use of 'open source' tools, insinuating
itself into the city and charting the invisible yet influential
components of the landscape.

We [Ed Bear & Lea Bertucci]  will repurpose the iTrip Nano FM transmitter to function without an Apple iPod, giving the device a new life as a self contained open-source hardware platform for subversive/creative acts by selected contemporary artists. We will then compile and document the projects produced by these artists and develop a multimedia web and print catalog around the new work.  We have selected this specific outmoded device, the iTrip Nano FM transmitter, to exemplify the potential impact of re-engineering consumer devices originally destined for landfills.  At 80¢ each on Ebay, the low price creates unprecedented distribution opportunities for a low power transmitter and encourages end-user experimentation.

An express goal of this project is to empower artists with diverse technical and economic backgrounds to create works using radio. This constitutes a social experiment involving creative responses to a common tool.

The end product of the archive research and vigorous documentation will be an online and print multimedia book. The document’s purpose will be threefold: to provide detailed technical instruction for the iTrip hack, to document the resulting artists’ projects, and to provide critical and historical context to the newly created work

The occupation of the public in Hertzian space is fundamentally controlled by access to electronic technology.  To advance the practice of repurposing commercial electronics is to further the reach, relevance, and accessibility of transmission in art and society.  The proposed project will critically, materially, and publicly develop, experiment with, and codify the historical and contemporary relationship between creative electronics and transmission artists.

For this project, we [Ed Bear & Lea Bertucci] will distribute hacked low power FM transmitters (called the iTrip) to artists of different creative disciplines and work with them to create artworks using, though not necessarily focusing on, this device. An express goal of this project is to empower artists with diverse technical backgrounds to create works using radio. This constitutes a social experiment involving creative responses to a common tool. Once an artist has completed their project, we will document the work for a book that will go to print early next year. This is a great opportunity to work with an extremely flexible piece of electronics and have your work published in a very sexy looking book. Selected artists will also be featured in free103point9’s Transmission Art Archive, broadcast to 78,000 potential listeners via WGXC 90.7 FM in upstate New York and invited to present their projects live in the summer of 2011.

Some background about the transmitter: We recently found these devices on ebay for about .80 cents a pop…. So we bought 500. The device’s original use was a way to listen to an Ipod through the car radio while driving.  As is, the iTrip can only take signal from a specific generation of Ipod, but with a little reprogramming, we have found a way to allow the device to be able to take any audio input. This opens up the iTrip to an array of artistic possibilities including audio effects, oscillators, wireless microphones, sensors, transmitters, micro-controller etc.   Because they are so cheap we can give you quite a few, if you want many.  While radio is the intended application, these things cost dimes on the dollar in just hardware so this could be a really cheap way to build a synth or performance gear, add some layers to visual or installation pieces, or just learn things.

An essential aspect of this project is to involve a diverse group of artists, some of whom have worked with creative electronics and transmission, and some who have not. We are looking to work closely with artists who need hands on assistance to work with the device, in order to further modify it to suit the needs of their projects.

The 2011 Distribution Grant for New York State Artists provides support for the distribution of new works in film, video, sound, new-media, and media-installation. Funding is available from free103point9 through a regrant from New York State Council on the Arts' Electronic Media and Film Program. Grant awards assist artists in making works available to public audiences. Successful grantees are also awarded the opportunity to work with a project mentor who will provide guidance as grantees execute their distribution and exhibition plans. The following eight projects were selected during a competitive panel review process:

2011 Grantees:

Sound, Installation: (alphabetical by artist)

Cathedral Scan, Blake Carrington

Cathedral Scan is an audiovisual performance and sound work that translates the architectural plans of Gothic cathedrals into open-ended scores. Through a custom Max/MSP/Jitter patch, laptop and MIDI controllers, the plans are sonified in a real-time performance. Rich organ-like harmonics and unique rhythmic signatures emerge from each graphic icon in a live scanning process.

Funding will support a CD release performance, and it’s documentation, at St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in SoHo in March 2011, coinciding with the project’s album release by the Los Angeles-based label, Dragon’s Eye Recordings.

The Glass Sea, Jessica Feldman

The Glass Sea is a video and sound-based installation, which includes a brick-built projection room, sand, and handwritten texts detailing the schedules of inmates and patients confined on Rikers, Roosevelt, Randall's, and Wards Islands. The project is informed by interviews with current and past residents of these institutions, and a first-person narration of their schedules, experiences, and locations. Feldman simulated and documented the spaces, labors, and activities of island confinement described during the interviews during a Lower Manhattan Cultural Council residency on Governors Island, summer 2010.

Funding will support an installation of The Glass Sea in a New York public space near water, as well as a web-based documentation of the project.

Warsaw Machines & Songs, Nick Yulman

Created during a three-month artist residency at the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski (CCA) in Warsaw, Poland, Warsaw Machines & Songs is a series of digitally controlled mechanical instruments using found materials from around Warsaw, and a composition cycle performed with the project’s instrumentation. For Warsaw Machines & Songs, Yulman employed Warsaw as both a source of physical material, scavenging parts from the streets to construct instruments, as well as a source for lyrical material.

Funding will support an eight-channel recording of the composition cycle and the release of the recordings on vinyl and CD.

The Silent Truth, Joan Brooker-Marks

On a U.S. military base in Iraq, Army private, LaVena Lynn Johnson, is found dead, shot in the head. The Army rules it a suicide. Later, independent forensic evidence reveals that she was brutally murdered. To date, a hundred and fifty-nine women troops have died in Afghanistan or during Operation Iraqi Freedom since 2003. Of these deaths, twenty-nine have been classified as non-combat deaths by the military. Nine of those have been characterized as "suicides," and as in LaVena’s case and despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, the army refuses to re-open their cases. Joan Brooker-Marks's film The Silent Truth follows Dr. John and Mrs. Linda Johnson as they search for truth and justice for their daughter.

Funding will support a tour of the film to festivals around the country, as well as grass root screenings organized around and near U.S. military bases. Each screening will include a panel discussion.

The Griot, Volker Goetze

A Griot, in Western Africa is a repository of oral history and tradition shared through music and story. Volker Goetze’s documentary film, The Griot, explores a historic moment of change in this tradition, caught at present, between an imperative to maintain the social structures of the past and the need to enter into a dialogue with the international community. Kora virtuoso Ablaye Cissoko is a central figure in the film, and contributes to the project’s soundtrack.

Funding will be used towards promotional and marketing efforts, including preview DVDs, in support of the distribution of The Griot to a broad viewing audience.

My Perestroika, Robin Hessman

My Perestroika follows five ordinary Russians living in extraordinary times — from their sheltered Soviet childhood, to the collapse of the Soviet Union during their teenage years, to the constantly shifting political landscape of post-Soviet Russia. The film interweaves images of their contemporary world with rare home movie footage from the 1970s and 1980s in the USSR, along with official Soviet propaganda films that surrounded them at the time - together, painting a complex picture of the dreams and disillusionment of those raised behind the Iron Curtain.

Funding will support the film’s theatrical release at The IFC Center, New York City in March 2011, as well as promotion and marketing expenses associated with a subsequent theatrical run in advance of a POV broadcast in 2011.

Crosswalk, Jeanne Liotta

Crosswalk is an experimental non-fiction 35mm film. Constructed from documentation of Good Friday street processions in New York City’s Lower East Side neighborhood, the film’s image and soundscape exists at the intersection of home movies and Cinema Verité. With Crosswalk, Jeanne Liotta presents a locative portrait of her New York childhood, and explores the relationship between two omnipresent communities there: the church and the cops.

Funding will support the creation of film prints for distribution, as well as preview DVD packages.

Where Are You Taking Me, Kimi Takesue

A feature length documentary filmed in Uganda, Where Are You Taking Me reveals multifaceted portraits of Ugandans in both public and private spaces. The film travels through Uganda, roaming the vibrant streets of Kampala and the rural quiet of the North, to reveal a diverse society where global popular culture finds expression alongside enduring Ugandan traditions. Throughout the journey, Where Are You Taking Me asks us to consider the complex interplay between the observer and the observed, and challenges our notions of both the familiar and exotic.

Funding will support continued distribution of the film in both festivals and educational contexts. Funds will also support the authoring of a DVD and Educational Guide, that will allow individuals and institutions to use the film as both an artistic and educational teaching tool.

The Sound Bank is a new initiative from In The Dark, dedicated to commissioning and investing in the best new crafted documentary features from around the world.

From first-time features to uncompleted passion projects, wild experiments to those great pitches that didn’t quite fit the brief, the Sound Bank is here to help you realise your ideas and explore the world of story telling in sound.

How does it work?

The Sound Bank scheme is offering funding of between £500 and £1500 towards the production of new audio pieces of 3 to 15 minutes duration each. Recipients of the scheme will also be allocated a ‘mentor’ to help with the artistic, editorial and practical realisation of their idea. The finished work will be presented at In the Dark’s 2011 Spring Festival and become part of In the Dark’s curated database of online audio features. In addition In the Dark offers to promote winning commissions, liaising with broadcasters, webhosts, festivals and competition-holders across the English-speaking world.

An independent jury of radio enthusiasts chaired by Nina Garthwaite will award three or four grants in this inaugural 2010 round. The scheme is open to all – first-time producers and students, migrants from other arts and media as well as experienced radio professionals seeking the opportunity to attempt something bold and adventurous.

The Association of Independents in Radio, Inc. is pleased to announce the New Voices $20,000 scholarship fund to support minority producers - both independent and station-based - interested in attending Third Coast International Audio Festival's 2010 conference in Chicago, IL October 28-30. Funding for this program comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

The Third Coast Conference attracts a broad, international group of bright, inventive producers. AIR will kick off the conference with a producers’ meeting convened on Thursday, October 28, 3-4:30 pm. AIR members, as well as those wanting to learn more about AIR, are encouraged to attend.

The goal of the New Voices scholarship is to help broaden the pipeline for a new generation of diverse media talent and to provide support for bright program makers. Applicants will be asked to submit a brief statement outlining ideas for how the public radio system can provide more channels of opportunity for new talent trying to find a way into public media. A panel will be convened to review applications, and final decisions will be announced by September 21st. Those who have never attended a Third Coast Conference are particularly encouraged to apply.

Individual scholarships of up to $1500 per person will be awarded and must be used to offset costs associated with Third Coast transportation, meals, hotel, and registration. The registration cost for Third Coast is $395, or $345 if submitted by the early bird deadline of September 15, 2010.

free103point9 is pleased to announce the 2010/2011 AIRtime Fellows:
Lea Bertucci and Ed Bear, Zach Layton, and Phillip Stearns.

The AIRtime program provides artists with valuable assistance with which to concentrate on new transmission works and conduct research about the genre using free103point9's resource library and equipment holdings. Fellows present their work in conjunction with WGXC: Hands-on Radio, a FM radio station and media project in Greene and Columbia counties, upstate New York. Participating artists receive an honorarium, technical and administrative support from free103point9 staff, and are encouraged to archive recordings and other digital media with the free103point9 Transmission Art Archive project.

free103point9 defines “Transmission Arts” as a conceptual umbrella that unites a community of artists and audiences interested in transmission ideas and tools. The genre is informed by an intentional use of space—often the airwaves. Transmission Art manifests in participatory live art or time-based art including radio, video, light, installation, and performance.

About the selected projects:

Lea Bertucci and Ed Bear eXiTrip

Lea Bertucci and Ed Bear’s project breathes new life into the iTrip Nano FM device as a self-contained open-source hardware platform for subversive/creative acts. Approximately fifty artists will be invited to participate. Each will be provided with a modified device with which to create a new work. The projects will be compiled and documented through a multimedia web and print catalog. Write Bertucci and Bear, “We have selected this specific outmoded device, the iTrip Nano FM transmitter, to exemplify the potential impact of re-engineering consumer devices originally destined for landfills. At 40¢ each on Ebay, the low price creates unprecedented distribution opportunities for a low-power transmitter and encourages end-user experimentation. An express goal of this project is to empower artists with diverse technical and economic backgrounds to create works using radio. This constitutes a social experiment involving creative responses to a common tool. The end product, an online and print multimedia book, will provide detailed technical instruction for the iTrip hack, document the resulting artists’ projects, and provide critical and historical context to the newly created work using material in free103point9 archive.”

Zach Layton Megawatt Mind

Using a Biowave EEG sensor, broadcasting over low-power FM transmitters and WGXC’s 3,300-watt transmitter, Megawatt Mind will manifest as a series of experimental transmissions of brainwave sonifications created in real-time during meditation sessions in the broadcast studios of free103point9/WGXC. Writes Layton, “The word transmission takes on an interesting meaning within the context of Buddhist meditation. Specifically, within the Tibetan practices of Mahamudra and Dzogchen, a qualified teacher will offer what is known as a “pointing out instruction‚” (or transmission) introducing the natural state of mind which is considered enlightened by its very nature; luminous, empty, and all pervasive. This luminous nature is said to manifest spontaneously as a field of vibrational frequencies not unlike the broad spectrum of electromagnetic radio waves propagating throughout the earth's atmosphere. Neuroscientific studies of human consciousness have shown that meditation is capable of modulating the various bands of brainwave frequency. This project will explore and amplify the intersection between brainwaves and radio waves.”

Phillip Stearns Deluge

The Deluge project is a sound and light installation that depicts the constant hum of human-made electromagnetic radiation around us as a shower of raining light. A cloud of small lights (LEDs or small incandescent bulbs) is created from numerous strands suspended from the ceiling, containing varying numbers of lights at varying lengths. Each strand of lights is associated with a point source of sound emanating softly from a speaker located at the top. The sounds for each strand are sourced from transmissions selected from the broad electromagnetic spectrum we use for radio communications: AM, FM, Short Wave, and Wireless frequencies. Each strand will measure the intensity of activity on its specific frequency of the broad radio communications spectrum, counting micro events and presenting them on the strand as a long binary number. The visual effect is that light will appear as though it is raining downwards and accumulating in columns, continually cycling through, becoming fully lit for a brief instant before going dark and beginning again. Writes Stearns, “The air around us is brimming with electricity and the sound of life. All we have to do is tune into the right frequency and we will never have to feel alone.”

WGXC Radio Barnraising, September 24-26, 2010 Hudson, NY

All three AIRtime Fellows will participate in the WGXC Barnraising September 24-26, 2010, presented with Prometheus Radio Project. A program of free103point9, WGXC: Hands-on Radio is a community-run media project. Over 78,000 potential listeners will be able to receive WGXC’s FM signal in New York’s Greene and Columbia counties, on 90.7-FM. Barnraising participants will join hundreds of community media experts and volunteers from around the country in bringing the voices of upstate New York to the airwaves.
