The schedule consists of two daily programs: a 22-hour radio art production, and a two-hour lunchtime live radio show from a local kitchen. It also features two month-long artist residencies and a program of public events. Each day the radio sounds different from the next: 100 international and local artists and groups have been invited to produce a durational program, requiring them to fully immerse themselves in topics and production techniques of their choice. Taking form through performances, compositions, installations and interventions in public space, from the point of view of the listeners Radio Art Zone is a kind of audible lucky dip. Every day a distinctive concept is offered, a new experience of sound, a novel idea of radio. The lunchtime shows bring a domestic scenario to the radio: people cook and talk, relax with guests and laugh. This framework makes space for spontaneous discussions about the radio art works between artists, invited guests and passers-by, all involved in cooking together on air, without agenda or formal interviews. Part virtual dance party and part live performance, Revival! is a celebration of visual and sonic transmissions that are contained within Black spiritual and ecstatic experience. The title itself references the religious practices and histories of African Americans who have used spirituals in the form of song, dance, and performance as modes of connection, transcendence, and pleasure outside of the systemic violences pressing on our lives. Zakat and Oluwafemi use turntables to deejay both visual and aural content sourced from an archive of found footage from the internet, documentaries, live performances, and interviews. At Wave Farm Revival! will manifest both as a radio broadcast and a live event at Avalon Lounge in Catskill, NY.

Rashid Zakat is a filmmaker and artist based in Philadelphia. He uses video, photography, design, audio, and the web to encourage people to find as much beauty, joy, and wonder as possible. Professionally Zakat has a 15-year long career as a director and cinematographer for non-fiction, experimental films, and music videos. He has done work for India.Arie, Carmelo Anthony, Black Thought, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, BlackStar Film Festival, Soul Train, Topic, WHYY, Philadelphia Contemporary, Mural Arts, & BET to name a few. Oluwafemi is inspired by drums and patterns, the rhythmic evolution of repetition. For over a decade, he has enjoyed mixing songs of drum influenced genres - the family of funk, hip-hop, soul, reggae, dancehall, house music, and their innumerable offshoots. These diasporic sounds have traveled with Oluwafemi to various cities on the east coast, California and Costa Rica. His style is simultaneously groovy and soulful, often drawing from a wide range of cultural influence and history.

The title itself references the religious practices and histories of African Americans who have used spirituals in the form of song, dance, and performance as modes of connection, transcendence, and pleasure outside of the systemic violences pressing on our lives. Zakat and Oluwafemi use turntables to deejay both visual and aural content sourced from an archive of found footage from the internet, documentaries, live performances, and interviews. At Wave Farm Revival! will manifest both as a radio broadcast and a live event at Avalon Lounge in Catskill, NY.

Rashid Zakat is a filmmaker and artist based in Philadelphia. He uses video, photography, design, audio, and the web to encourage people to find as much beauty, joy, and wonder as possible. Professionally Zakat has a 15-year long career as a director and cinematographer for non-fiction, experimental films, and music videos. Oluwafemi is a deejay, music producer and visual artist based in Philadelphia, by way of Central New Jersey, by way of Lagos, Nigeria. Oluwafemi is inspired by drums and patterns, the rhythmic evolution of repetition. For over a decade, he has enjoyed mixing songs of drum influenced genres - the family of funk, hip-hop, soul, reggae, dancehall, house music, and their innumerable offshoots. These diasporic sounds have traveled with Oluwafemi to various cities on the east coast, California and Costa Rica. His style is simultaneously groovy and soulful, often drawing from a wide range of cultural influence and history.

2022 Application

Eligibility: The Radio Art Fellowship program opportunity is open to individuals whose primary residence is in the United States. (Note: applications from collaborative teams are not eligible.) The Fellowship stipend will appear as “Other Income” on 1099s issued in conjunction with tax years 2022 and 2023, depending on the dates of engagement. Women, gender non-conforming people, and people of color are encouraged to apply.

Wave Farm Radio: WGXC 90.7-FM is pleased to be a broadcast partner for Radio Art Zone, a joint project by the artist duo Mobile Radio (Sarah Washington and Knut Aufermann) and the Luxembourg community station Radio ARA, broadcasting for 100 days from 18th June to 25th September 2022 as part of the European Capital of Culture Esch2022. The schedule consists of two daily programs: a 22-hour radio art production, and a two-hour lunchtime live radio show from a local kitchen. It also features two month-long artist residencies and a program of public events. Each day the radio sounds different from the next: 100 international and local artists and groups have been invited to produce a durational program, requiring them to fully immerse themselves in topics and production techniques of their choice. Taking form through performances, compositions, installations and interventions in public space, from the point of view of the listeners Radio Art Zone is a kind of audible lucky dip. Every day a distinctive concept is offered, a new experience of sound, a novel idea of radio. The lunchtime shows bring a domestic scenario to the radio: people cook and talk, relax with guests and laugh. This framework makes space for spontaneous discussions about the radio art works between artists, invited guests and passers-by, all involved in cooking together on air, without agenda or formal interviews. Some live lunches will be hosted in Radio Art Zone's publicly accessible studio, others broadcast from private and workplace kitchens in and around Esch, anchoring the project in the everyday life of the audience. For 100 days Radio Art Zone will be broadcast within the Esch2022 Capital of Culture area on FM radio. It will also be available online and via simultaneous broadcast on a host of international partner stations which enable the program to be widely accessed across the globe.
