"Saturday Afternoon Show" rebroadcast from Oct. 27, 2012 with Baltimore-based artist Jason Sloan, and his project "Whiteout," a new series of live FM transmission performances exploring and questioning the aesthetic of noise on the radio. These new textural works are created live and in the moment through the use of multiple analog electronic instruments and a transmitter.

Writes Sloan, "I was about twelve when I first became aware of how beautiful radio noise could be. I recall laying in bed and listening to my portable shortwave radio, slowly turning the dial, but allowing for long pauses on the dead spaces, as I moved from one distant broadcast to another. At times, I think I was more interested in the sounds produced by the odd interference and signal modulation than the broadcasts themselves. I would often drift to sleep listening to the ghost like voices buried beneath layers of slow and undulating static. At that age, I didn’t think much about what attracted me to the noise. I just enjoyed its sometimes violent yet mysterious and relaxing qualities. Looking back on those late night listening sessions in the early 80′s, I’ve come to realize the impact they had on my own development as a sound artist and electronic musician. The seeds for my awareness of the radio as an expressive medium were probably planted during this years. Of course, I was totally unaware that artists like Neuhaus, Stockhausen, Vostell, Cage and others had already begun exploring the possibilities of the radio as an art form decades earlier.

With this in mind, two years ago I began to include live scanner feeds in my concerts and performances. Unlike shortwave radio, scanners pull from air traffic, police, ham and other types of local broadcasts within just a few miles of the listener. The idea of incorporating live, local transmissions into the performance as a sonic fingerprint of the local geography was appealing to me. I saw it as an aural snapshot of that very moment or even an invisible, stringed instrument of sorts.

Recently, I was in my car listening to the SPK debut album Information Overload Unit from 1981. About halfway through the albums opening track Emanation Machine R. Gie 1916, I became aware of how much it sounded like some of the textures and modulating frequencies I would listen on the shortwave for hours as a kid. I began to wonder if a musical performance of pure analog electronic “noise” was broadcast on the radio, how would a listener moving through the dial know what they were hearing was an actual broadcast? And if they did, how where they able to discern synthetic, controlled noise from pure generative noise? It is my hope that the whiteout series of performances brings the very essence of noise, music and even our own environmental sonic awareness into question."

U.S. Attorny General Eric Holder sent a letter to Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) saying the President can take out Americans with radio-controlled drones. "The U.S. Attorney General's refusal to rule out the possibility of drone strikes on American citizens and on American soil is more than frightening," Paul told Mother Jones Tue., March 5. "It is an affront the constitutional due process rights of all Americans."

Paul received a letter from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder saying the president could kill Americans with radio-controlled drones on U.S. soil. “I rise today to begin to filibuster John Brennan’s nomination for the C.I.A.,” Mr. Paul began. “I will speak until I can no longer speak. I will speak as long as it takes, until the alarm is sounded from coast to coast that our Constitution is important, that your rights to trial by jury are precious, that no American should be killed by a drone on American soil without first being charged with a crime, without first being found to be guilty by a court.” Live coverage at midnight until it ends.

Attorney General Eric Holder released a 43-word statement in response to Kentucky Republican Rand Paul's Senate filibuster Wed., March 6. Paul questioned Holder's previous letter to Rand, which, he said, suggested the administration felt it could bomb Americans with radio-controlled drones on U.S. soil.

Charles Gayle (born February 28, 1939)[1] is a free jazz saxophonist, pianist, bass clarinetist, bassist, and percussionist, who sometimes performs as a mime, "Streets the Clown." Gayle was born in Buffalo, New York. He was apparently homeless for approximately twenty years, playing saxophone on street corners and subway platforms around New York City. In 1988, he gained fame through a trio of albums recorded by a Swedish label, Silkheart Records. Since then he has become a major figure in free jazz, recording for labels including Black Saint, Knitting Factory Records, FMP, and Clean Feed. He has also taught music at Bennington College. Crank Sturgeon has been active in performance, installation, and sound art since the early 1990’s. Accompanied by ridiculous costuming, pointed instructions, and parables (gone awry), and even the occasional dirigible or two, these elements intertwine, transforming into space-defying interventions, and invariably involving audience participation.

Since the Eighties, Al Margolis has run the indie cassette label Sound of Pig Music. His own music has succeeded in fusing ambience with industrial and musique concrete, producing strange soundscapes that are both soothing and unnerving, often at the same time. In the Nineties, Margolis evolved the Sound of Pig label into Pogus Productions, replacing the cassette medium with compact disk technology.

World Lines is the drone/experiemental/noise/psychedelic solo project of Logan Visscher from Hudson, NY.

Stephen Erickson has produced perhaps the best documentaries heard on radio in the past twenty-five years and garnered numerous awards in the process (most significantly a Gramy for his audio work on Ken Burns's series The Civil War). His Radio Radio program features samples from his programs Forbidden Voyage, The Exile of Braten Braten Bach, Airworks and The Blue Wall of Silence: the New York Police Department. "Radio Radio" is a sixteen-part series of forty-five minute broadcasts which asks an honest question: Is there really a place on radio for experimentation?

Nathan Mayberg reports in the Register Star the Columbia County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on a proposed mobile phone tax, Wed., Mar. 13. According to county officials, a plan to tax all county property owners 30 cents per month is under consideration, but details are still unknown. The funds will support the operations of Columbia County 911. The current plan represents a compromise reached after some supervisors objected to taxing every owner of a mobile device countywide. It is unclear if the supervisors will vote on the legislation Wednesday or wait until April. Read the full story in the Register Star.
