Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton won their respective primary elections for president in New York Tue., Apr. 19. WGXC will update local numbers as they come in.

Bernie Sanders won the 19th Congressional District 60 percent to 40 percent, meaning he gets three delegates at the national convention, and Hillary Clinton gets two.

Republicans in Greene County voted, according to Greene County Board of Elections:

In Columbia County, Bernie Sanders leads Hillary Clinton 3,302 to 2,481. Donald Trump leads John Kasich, Ted Cruz, and Ben Carson, with, respectively, 2,522 for Trump, 1,194 for Kasich, 684 for Cruz, and 56 for Carson.

In the New York 9th Senate District special election to replace convicted Republican Senate leader Dean Skelos, Democrat Todd D. Kaminsky has declared victory over Republican Chris McGrath, but McGrath has not conceded. At 12:30 a.m., Wednesday, Kaminsky led by 780 votes with all precincts reporting. Democrats would pick up a seat with a Kaminsky victory. Democrats and Republicans currently split Senate with 31 members each. A Kaminsky win makes it 32-30 Democrats.

John Mason is reporting in the Register-Star Germantown Telephone Co., or Gtel, announced Mon., Apr. 18, it has added nine more miles to its fiber-to-the-home network. There are approximately 130 homes located within the nine-mile area in Germantown, covering Church Avenue from Main Street south to Viewmont, and Route 9G from Cemetery Road north and south, also covering parts of East Camp Road. The company's core Internet router was also upgraded to increase capacity and speed across the network. According to a press release, Gtel has now linked to a fiber ring extending from Germantown to Albany to ensure an uninterrupted connection and more backbone Internet bandwidth security. GTel General Manager Pete Mercer said in most cases the upgrade comes at no extra charge to existing customers. However, for locations far off the main road, the company will expect the customer to split the cost of construction. GTel provides voice, data and video service to Germantown, and most of Clermont. The Columbia Paper is reporting it was named the recipient of four statewide journalism awards presented the New York Press Association early this month. Photographer David Lee won a first place award in the Spot News Photos category, publisher Parry Teasdale received a second place award for editorials and Associate Editor Diane Valden received two awards -- third place for feature story writing, and an honorable mention for Spot News coverage. Overall 177 newspapers submitted more than 2,800 entries in the Better Newspaper Contest. The entries were judged by members of the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association. The Columbia Paper competed in Division 1, which includes papers from around the state with a circulation of up to 5,000 copies weekly. Read the full story in the Columbia Paper.

The Daily Freeman is reporting a forum to put the worldwide concern over climate change in a local context will held be this week in southern Columbia County. Residents and public officials will gather for two brief presentations followed by a discussion with regional climate experts about why the need to address climate change is urgent and what local communities can do about it. The program is organized by Columbia County Environmental Management Council representatives from Clermont, Germantown and Livingston. "Climate Change and How to Solve It," will be presented Sun., Apr. 24,, beginning at 4 p.m., at the Kellner Community Activities Center on Palatine Park Road, Germantown.

Bill Conners in the Poughkeepsie Journal reports that hunters killed 15 percent fewer deer in 2015 then the year before, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation. In Dutchess County, the deer kill was down 25 percent. Conners says DEC wildlife managers blame the statewide falloff on the particularly harsh winter of 2014-15. Dick Nelson in the Register-Star reports that 14 bears were killed in Columbia County with 66 in Greene County, and 135 in Ulster County, during the 2015 hunting season. Ancram, Austerlitz, and Copake each were the scene of one kill, while in Chatham two bears were killed, and in Canaan, Hillsdale, and New Lebanon, three each. In Greene County, Ashland, had five kills; Athens, one; Cairo, nine; Catskill, eight; Durham, five; Halcott, three; Hunter, eight; Jewett, nine; Lexington, thirteen; New Baltimore, two; Prattsville, two; and Windham, one. Is there now a war on solar energy? Or are towns regulating solar ahead of a rush of new installations? Cairo holds a public hearing May 2 on a solar moratorium, and Robert Cairns in The Watershed Post reports that Delaware County will tax commercial solar farms, by getting around state rules. The Delaware County Board of Supervisors voted April 13 to enter into “host community benefit” agreements for commercial solar installations. "The resolution circumvents state rules, which provide property tax exemptions for such installations for 15 years," Cairns writes. Michael Sabansky, the county's director of real property tax services, said that the state will soon be covered in solar panels. The New York State Public Service Commission wants 3,929 gigawatts of electric generation in New York state by 2020 and ten times that total by 2030. Sabansky said that 17,000 acres of solar panels would be needed by 2020 to reach the goal, with 170,000 acres of panels producing 39,290 gigawatts of generation by 2030 across New York.
