Opening reception for the Shaker Museum Pop-Up Exhibition, “The Commercialization of Shaker Knits,” curated by Emily Adams Bode Aujla. The exhibition explores the evolution of Shaker knitting from nineteenth-century craft to profitable commercial practice and its distinct and long-lasting impact on American athletic wear and fashion. Amy Rigby is best known for her album Diary Of A Mod Housewife. She started bands Last Roundup and the Shams in 80s/90s NYC before launching a solo career. A longtime online diarist and podcaster, Rigby has contributed writing to the Village Voice, Talkhouse and Slate. Her first book, Girl To City: A Memoir was published in 2019. She lives, writes and records in Catskill, New York and tours regularly in the US and UK. Anthony Kaczynski is a singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist. He has been the touring guitarist for The Magnetic Fields since 2016, currently leads the rock band Fireking, sings in the band Gymnasium, plays guitar for Trusty Sidekick (and also produced their 2013 album “The Friends of Trusty Sidekick), performs solo acoustic shows when the spirit moves him, and is generally in demand as a guitarist and sideman throughout the Boston music scene. He was the co-founder, vocalist, principal lyricist and keyboardist of Figures on a Beach, who began their career in his hometown of Detroit and went on to release two albums on Sire in the 1980s as well as a handful of indie EPs. A day of dance, distributed throughout Olana’s 250 acres of artist-designed landscape. Pop-up performances are featured across the site with a sunset finale performance. Site-Specific Dances, led by choreographer Michael Spencer Phillips and architect Dino Kiratzidis, will stage a series of dance pieces throughout Olana’s landscape. These performances are a result of conversations with art historians and developed specifically for Church’s designed landscape, highlighting the artist’s compositions, the site’s contemporary ecology, and the legacy of Olana and its protected viewshed.

Prior to June 17, a series of community dance workshops will be offered on June 10. Participants can join in the final performance, staged at sunset on June 17 at 8:15 p.m. Everyone can dance and everyone is invited.

Site-Specific Dances was founded by choreographer Michael Spencer Phillips and architect Dino Kiratzidis to investigate the synthesis of performance and place. Site-Specific Dances connects dance and music to unique places to activate theatricality of the natural world, and explore pressing environmental or social issues in playful or unconventional ways. The creative team for UNFOLDING OLANA includes Darian Donovan Thomas (composer) and Emma Kazaryan and Nate Reininga (videography).

The workshops and performance are part of Site-Specific Dances’ June creative residency at Olana, made possible through generous support from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and in collaboration with The Olana Partnership.

The Willamsburg Avant-Garde book release party: In The Williamsburg Avant-Garde, Cisco Bradley chronicles the rise and fall of the underground music and art scene in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn between the late 1980s and the early 2010s. Building on the neighborhood's punk DIY approach and aesthetic, Williamsburg's free jazz, post-punk, and noise musicians and groups produced shows in a variety of unlicensed venues as well as in clubs and cafes. At the same time, pirate radio station free103point9 and music festivals made Williamsburg an epicenter of New York's experimental culture. In 2005, New York's rezoning act devastated the community as gentrification displaced its participants farther afield in Brooklyn, Queens, and beyond. With this portrait of Williamsburg, Bradley not only documents some of the most vital music of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, he offers thoughts on the formation, vibrancy, and life span of experimental music and art scenes everywhere. The book talk will be followed by a performance by musicians who were a part of the Williamsburg scene who now live in the Hudson Valley.

The Resistance Revival Chorus celebrates Juneteenth at Promenade Hill Park in Hudson. The chorus is a collective of more than 60 women and non-binary singers who join together to breathe joy and song into the resistance and to uplift and center women’s voices. Dr. Voorhees, director of the Jacob Leisler Institute for Early New York History, speaks on the prominent role women played in the 1689-1691 New York uprising against King James II’s government popularly known as the “Leisler Rebellion.” Numerous references to female political activism are found in the records of the rebellion. Indeed, historians note that women played a prominent role in the uprising. Formed in 1982, Live Skull is considered by many aficionados to be the quintessential New York noise band. Together with Sonic Youth and Swans, Live Skull defined the term "noise rock" in the 1980s, spearheading the post-No Wave underground music scene in NYC with a series of legendary live performances and eight groundbreaking records released over the course of that decade.

The Giraffes are a cult band from Brooklyn that has been leveling crowds with their signature mixture of heavy rock, punk, metal and surf since 1996. A well-earned reputation for mayhem has followed the band from the start. Their guitarist was shot in the leg outside of a White Castle late one night in Brooklyn after being accosted by an off-duty fire marshal with an itchy trigger finger. The bullet is still lodged in his knee. Their singer has suffered multiple Sudden Cardiac Death events. He has a defibrillator implanted in his chest which has erroneously shocked him on stage. During a show at Chicago’s legendary Double Door, it sent 700 volts directly into his heart 3 times in 30 seconds. He finished the set. They have toured with Local-H, Eagles of Death Metal, The Vacation and Skeleton Key, sharing the stage with Interpol, Fishbone, the Yeah Yeah Yeah's, the Strokes. They have played Amsterjam, Voodoofest, Monolith, SXSW, Bonnaroo, CMJ, Northside and more. Giraffes music can be heard in the video game Guitar Hero and the 2017 Sundance Festival winner movie “I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore”

Fronted by poet Karen Schoemer, Albany NY’s Sky Furrows combine influences from krautrock, NZ bands the Clean and theVerlaines, the Minutemen, Sylvia Plath and early Sonic Youth. Schoemer collaborates with bassist Mike Watt in Jaded Azurites, and with Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby. Eric Hardiman, Mike Griffin and Phil Donnelly are members of psych rock unit Burnt Hills.

A day of ecological restoration work at a scenic stretch of Schoharie Creek near downtown Prattsville. There will be games, prizes, crafts, and opportunities to learn about local ecology while helping with a knotweed management study and restoration project. The workshop cost does not include signal generators or oscillators (though generic parts are suitable and easy to come by).

About the Wobbulator:
"A raster manipulation unit or 'wobbulator' is a prepared television which permits a wide variety of treatments to be performed on video images; this is accomplished by the addition of extra yokes to a conventional black and white receiver and by the application of signals derived from audio or function generators on the yokes. The unit is a receiver modified for monitor capability; all of the distortions can thus be performed either on broadcast signals or, when the unit is used as a monitor, on images from a live or prerecorded source. Although the image manipulations cannot be recorded directly, they can be recorded by using an optical interface. The patterns displayed on the unit are rescanned; a camera is pointed directly at the picture tube surface and scans the display. The video signal from this rescan camera is then input to a videotape recorder for immediate recording or to a processing system for further image treatment. The Black and Brown Families of Hudson exhibition documents the historic presence of Black and Brown families residing in Hudson and includes extended family members that return to their families centered in Hudson. This is the second leg of a documentation project by Operation Unite NY. The reception will take place in the library Community Room and the photos will be on display through August 28. This exhibition is presented in partnership with Operation Unite NY.

NORMAN WESTBERG altered the course of rock as the main guitarist of the Swans over 35 years, contributing "overwhelming waves of volume with a mix of therhythmically slashing and the harmonically sensual." He has a busy career as a solo artist and with other projects, such as Heroin Sheiks, NeVah and Five Dollar Priest.

LUKE SCHWARZ is blazing a trail as a young New York guitarist to watch; he also toured and recorded with Branca and performs frequently, including with his outfit, Greasetrap.

MATT HUNTER (Bass) is a co-founder of New Radiant Storm King and plays or has played with a galaxy of cool projects, including J. Mascis & the Fog, King Missile, Silver Jews, SAVAK, and recent solo releases.

Drummer STEVE DiBENEDETTO, is a widely shown and collected fine art painter but also in in high demand for his music. Andes Manta perform the vibrant music of the Andes on more than 35 traditional instruments. The Saugerties Artists Studio Tour celebrates its 21st Anniversary -- On July 14, the Opening of a new exhibit featuring the works of Saugerties artists is at The Dutch Barn Art & Heritage Gallery. This group show offers a contemporary glimpse into the world of artistic expression, in contrast to its setting in a 1750’s reconstructed Dutch barn. You will see classical styles as well as contemporary, from realistic to abstract works of art. The barn gives artists an opportunity to “go big,” displaying large works on canvas, moderately sized sculptures, furniture and pottery. Not to be overlooked, well-lit museum panels will support 2-D and smaller 3-D work with selections in a wide range of media: painting, collage, mixed media, fiber art, print making and photography.

Opening reception. A show of paintings by Will Clark curated by Sam Sebren. John William Clark (1916 - 2012) began painting late in life at age 85, with no formal training he painted daily until his death at 96. As a young man, Clark studied and published poetry and writing, which later informed his practice as a painter. His paintings often explored the theme of old age. At age 94, Clark stated, "There is a definite connection between my paintings and my poems - they both reflect my 94 years on this planet and my constant striving to make sense of it all." The show is hung in a salon-style presentation of 54 works, showcasing the breadth and depth of this artist's uncategorizable poetic outpouring. Through August 13.

Composer/percussionist Susie Ibarra is joined by Tashi Dorji, Phyllis Chen, and area percussion groups in the premiere of the multi-ensemble version of “Four Meditations on Impermanence,” a meditation on forests conceived and developed in PS21’s landscape. Inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh’s quote, Ibarra presents four pieces focused on the sonic world of four elements – metal, skin, wood, and water, creating a percussive piece grounded in these natural elements—one that is impermanent, yet also able to adapt and grow. The concert highlights a full day of community-wide, multidisciplinary engagement with PS21’s varied natural topography. Part of Ibarra’s Rhythm in Nature residency, the day includes a participatory performance along the Stony Kill, a musical procession through the forest, sound mapping, and visual and movement projects, all free and open to all. UPSTATE ART WEEKEND (UPAW) is a connective annual event, for locals and tourists alike, celebrating the cultural vibrancy of Upstate New York. The fourth edition of UPAW will take place Friday, July 21, through Monday, July 24, 2023.

UPAW launched in 2020 with 23 participants, expanding to over 130 in 2023, welcoming thousands of visitors to the region each year. The participants are art organizations, galleries, museums, residencies, and creative projects.

Lisa Schonberg (1977, Staten Island) is a percussionist, composer and ecological sound artist. She documents soundscapes, insects, and habitat through sound works, writing, and multimedia collaboration. Informed by her background in entomology, Schonberg is interested in revealing and challenging assumptions about insects and other overlooked and/or avoided nonhumans. Since 2017 she has been collaborating with Brazilian entomologists on ATTA (Amplifying the Tropical Ants), a project investigating bioacoustics of ants and other invertebrates in Amazônia. Other recent work includes investigations of old-growth forests in Oregon, endangered Hawaiian bees, fungi, and plastics. Schonberg's compositions are performed by percussion ensembles Secret Drum Band, Antenna and UAU, and solo. She is the author of Text Scores for Getting to Know the Invertebrates, The Hylaeus Project, and the The DIY Guide to Drums, and has performed or otherwise presented work at FILE Festival (BR), TBA Festival (PDX), Harvestworks, Z42 (Rio de Janeiro), the Pompidou, the Brooklyn Museum, Bosque da Ciencia (BR), the American Museum of Natural History, and Museo Reina Sofia (SP), and given workshops at Pioneerworks, the Fuller Initiative Land Lab (OR), and the Greenpoint Library (NYC). Her collaboration with Allie ES Wist on sensing fungi/fungal sensing, Sensory Kinship of the Third Kind, has been presented at Pioneerworks, NY Fungus Fest, and the Emerge Festival (AZ). Schonberg has toured the US and internationally in her bands Kickball, Explode into Colors and STLS, and has completed residencies with Labverde, the Banff Centre, Pioneerworks, HJ Andrews Experimental Station, and Signal Fire. Her work has been supported by the the Media Arts Assistance Fund (Wave Farm/NYSCA), the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment, the Oregon Arts Commission, the Oregon Community Foundation, Arc Teryx, the Regional Arts and Culture Commission (OR), & The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. She is currently completing her doctorate degree in Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Dr. Leah Bowden is a percussionist and music scholar specializing in experimental music, world music, jazz and popular idioms. Her current projects include The Forest, a New York-based percussion quintet, and Baby Bushka, a theatrical eight-woman band that reimagines the music of Kate Bush. Her research focuses on Max Roach and M’Boom, and she is the archivist for M’Boom co-founder Warren Smith.

Melanie Medina is an LA-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. She received a Bachelors’ in Jazz Guitar Studies, and played for various ensembles in San Diego before relocating to Los Angeles in 2022. She has played extensively in the orchestra pit as a theater musician, and performs in the San Diego-based Kate Bush tribute band Baby Bushka with Bowden.

Azouke Legba is songwriter, rhythm guitar player, drummer, and the cohost (together with Carline Murphy) of the weekly radio show on Wave Farm's WGXC 90.7-FM, Li Le, Li Tan, a Creole language radio program meaning "it’s the time, it’s the hour." The show's mission is to promote Haitian language, music, arts and culture; to raise awareness and to discuss Haiti’s history and its relevance to today’s world; and to share news on current events happening here in the counties and in Haiti. Legba is band member with Mother Fletcher, Samba Yo, Azaka, and appears on the Smithsonian Recordings of Rhythms of Rapture.

Chris Corsano (b. 1975, USA) is an upstate NY-based drummer who has been active at the intersections of collective improvisation, free jazz, avant-rock, and noise music since the late 1990's. He began a long-standing, high-energy musical partnership with saxophonist Paul Flaherty in 1998. Their style, which they occasionally refer to with (semi-)tongue-in-cheek humor as "The Hated Music", combines modern free-jazz's ecstatic collectivist spirit and the urgency and intensity of hardcore punk.

A move from western Massachusetts to the UK in 2005 led Corsano to develop his solo music--a dynamic, spontaneously-composed amalgam of extended techniques for drum set and non-percussive instruments of his own making: e.g. bowed violin strings stretched across drum heads, modified reed instruments, and stockpiles of resonant metal. In February 2006, Corsano released his first solo recording, The Young Cricketer, and toured extensively throughout Europe, USA, Australia, and Japan. He spent 2007 and '08 as the drummer on Björk's Volta world tour, all the while weaving in shows and recordings on his days off with the likes of Evan Parker, Virginia Genta, C. Spencer Yeh, and Jandek.

Moving back to the U.S. in 2009, Corsano returned focus to his own projects, including a duo with Michael Flower, Vampire Belt (with Bill Nace), Rangda (with Richard Bishop and Ben Chasny) and his solo work, further expanded in its use of contact microphones and synthesizers. In 2017, he received the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artist Award.

Corsano's dedication to collective improvisation has led to collaborations with many kindred spirits and his appearance on over 150 records and 1000 live performances. He's worked with, among others: Paul Dunmall (released by the label: ESP-Disk), Joe McPhee (Roaratorio), Okkyung Lee (Open Mouth), Mette Rasmussen (Hot Cars Warp Records & Clean Feed), John Edwards (OTOroku & Dancing Wayang), Sylvie Courvoisier (Relative Pitch), Nate Wooley (No Business & Astral Spirits), Jim O'Rourke & Akira Sakata (Drag City & Polystar), Merzbow (Family Vineyard), Jessica Rylan (Load Records), Nels Cline (Strange Attractors), Heather Leigh (Volcanic Tongue), Ghédalia Tazartès (Ultra Eczema), Ken Vandermark (Audiographic), and Sunburned Hand Of Man (Manhand).

Bobby Previte is a composer and performer whose work explores the nexus between notated and improvised music. One of the seminal figures of the 1980s New York ‘Downtown’ scene, Previte is the recipient of the 2015 Greenfield Prize for music and was a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow in 2012. He has received multiple awards for composition from the NEA, NYFA, NYSCA, New Music USA, The Jerome Foundation, The New York State Music Fund, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and the American Music Center. Mr. Previte has been an artist-in-residence at the Rockefeller Foundation in Bellagio, Italy, Civitella Ranieri, The Montalvo Arts Center, The Hermitage Artist Retreat, and nine times at the MacDowell Colony.

His original compositions have been recorded and released on Sony, Elektra, Rykodisc, Palmetto, New World, Ropeadope, Tzadik, Thirsty Ear, Cantaloupe and Rarenoise. Leading a plethora of diverse ensembles from his instrument, the drums, he has collaborated with many of the leading lights in and beyond the world of music, including master composer John Adams, iconic singer Tom Waits, pantheon filmmaker Robert Altman, and most recently, rock legend Iggy Pop. His music has been labeled as ‘utterly original,’ by the New York Times, while The New Yorker has said his ensembles ‘speak in visionary tongues.’ Mr. Previte has given master classes at schools and universities around the world including The Eastman School of Music, The New School, Bard College, and Princeton University. His recent work includes: TERMINALS, Five Concertos for Percussion Ensemble and Soloist, with SO Percussion, released October 28th, 2014 by Cantaloupe Music, GONE, with Bobby Previte & the Visitors, released summer 2016 on the forTune label, TERMINALS QUARTETS, the percussion only version of Terminals, summer 2016, by Cantaloupe Music, and MASS, a music in nine parts for choir, pipe organ, and metal trio, released April 2017 by Rarenoise Records. His newest work, RHAPSODY, a song cycle on the subject of migration, was commissioned by the Greenfield Prize at the Hermitage Artist Retreat, and premiered April 21, 2017 at New College in Sarasota, Florida. Scored for acoustic guitar, harp, piano, voice, drums and saxophone, and featuring a powerhouse band of Zeena Parkins, John Medeski, Nels Cline, Fabian Rucker, and Jen Shyu, RHAPSODY was released in January, 2018 by Rarenoise.

Applications are now open for the Oral History Summer School summer intensive at Sylvan Motor Lodge. The program is open to documentarians, journalists, artists, media-makers, educators, and those looking to learn new things in good company. Lead instructor Suzanne Snider will be joined by Nicki Pombier, who will support the conversation around nontraditional communication and oral history beyond speech. Session runs from July 23 through 30.

In the early morning hours of July 14, 1926, a fire broke out in the 265-room Swiss Chalet-style Twilight Inn located in Twilight Park in Haines Falls. Flames quickly consumed the all-wooden structure, despite the efforts of mountaintop fire departments to contain the fire. The story of the Twilight Inn fire and its heroes will be told by Twilight Cottager, Joanne Ainsworth and Town of Hunter Historian, Dede Terns Thorpe, through old photographs, local and national newspaper articles, and an oral history from a survivor of the fire. Presented by Mountain Top Historical Society.

This summer, Ailey II (the younger version of the world-renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater) will visit Hudson for an exciting weekend of free community programming for all ages at the Hudson Area Library. To start the celebration, former Ailey Associate Artistic Director, Masazumi Chaya will participate in a panel discussion and film screening of the 2021 Ailey documentary, a beautiful portrait of legendary choreographer, Alvin Ailey. Then, professional dancers from Ailey II will lead two masterclass dance workshops for local Columbia County youth of various ages and skill levels. Taiko Masala combines the training and discipline of Japanese martial arts with the precision and power of complex drumming.

Inspired by Italo Calvino’s work “Invisible Cities,” Processional Arts Workshop invites you to create your own imagined cities through pageant puppets, masks, and costumes, transforming PS21’s grounds into a roving performance installation, with a final community procession on July 29. With workshops taking place over two weeks, participants will collaborate to create imaginary cities with puppets and other performing objects. From Italian theatermaker Alessandro Sciarroni, recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Dance at the 2019 Venice Biennale, an inventive revival of the polka chinata, a nearly lost Bolognese courtship dance from the last century. The polka chinata (crouched polka) is a rarity in ballroom dancing: it was performed exclusively by pairs of men. It originated in Bologna around 1900 and had nearly disappeared when Giancarlo Stagni, a professor and dance master, rediscovered it in the 1990s and began teaching it to his dancers. Theater-maker and choreographer Alessandro Sciarroni, whose work inhabits the tension between tradition and modernity, found the dance, its hypnotic nature, and its near-extinction fascinating. In addition to the performance at PS21, dancers Giovanfrancesco Giannini and Gianmaria Borzillo will lead free workshops in polka chinata following the performance for dancers and non-dancers, diving into the polka and invoking the spirit of the community to save the dance from the brink of extinction.

Wave Farm's eighth annual Audio Buffet and WGXC Programmer Picnic took place on Saturday August 5, 2023. In 2015, Pauline Oliveros and IONE donated the 32-channel mixing board they once traveled the world with to Wave Farm. Three site-specific new works will be presented as a roving performance with audiences traveling by car to each secret location to experience these self-contained plays in environments that enhance their stories. The Ancram Opera House has commissioned two new works: one by Mukta Phatak, featuring Abuzar Farrukh, and another by New York-based cabaret artist, writer, and actor Salty Brine. The event will also premier a work by playwright and poet Barbara Wiechmann. At each play location, blankets and some seating will be provided. Audiences are also welcome to bring their own seating, if preferred, or to stand. All three plays are presented at each show. Audience capacity is limited. When, a week before her 28th birthday, MorganEve Swain lost her husband and musical partner, Dave Lamb, to leukemia, the world did not stand still. April continued into May, breath continued its rhythm through the bodies of the living and in their studio in Warren, Rhode Island, MorganEve continued to record bass, strings and vocals into a laptop because it’s what she’d always done.

For the previous six years, she and Lamb had existed professionally as the duo Brown Bird, gaining a loyal international following through intensive touring and the original music they created, praised for its honesty and expression of the human condition. Without Dave, and in honor of him, MorganEve became The Huntress and Holder of Hands: a young widow pursuing the white stag of grief through a foreign wilderness, intent on maintaining the sense of wonder and compassion with which her partner lived his life.

In 2016, with the ambition to perform live, The Huntress and Holder of Hands expanded into a 5-musician entity, employing cello, bowed string bass, electric bass and drums with MorganEve primarily on five-string viola and guitar. Footings is an American rock band, begun in Peterborough NH as a vehicle for the songs of Eric Gagne. They have been playing for a few years now, a natural progression from Eric’s earlier folk explorations in Redwing Blackbird and Passerine. He also has made records with Dweller on the Threshold and Death to Tyrants, and has had the honor of opening for Mount Eerie, J Mascis, Diane Cluck, Waxahatchee, Califone, Dredd Foole, Steve Gunn, Mirah, Death Vessel, Leyla McCalla, Mail the Horse, and many more. Strawberry runners are the horizontal stolons that emerge from the strawberry plant to produce new strawberry plants. Songwriter, Emi Night drew inspiration for her project's name from her mother's garden and the strawberry plants she grew. Emi thinks of this connector as a metaphor for the connection between mother and child, present and future, writer and song.

The richness of her music is in Emi’s tender and easy integration of the varied styles she’s called home: most of the songs maintain a humble faith in brevity; melody compels every word with the mystery and familiarity of a hymn. Literacy Connections of the Hudson Valley and the Main Street Community Center in Windham are working together to create an English language class for adult speakers of other languages. The classes will be held in Windham on Saturday mornings, beginning sometime in September and the first step is to gather a team of volunteers who will work together to teach the class consistently.
